THE NEW JAIL.
The supervisors have adopted the plans of Architect Hall for a County Jail. Following is an outline of the plans.
The basement contains the family laundry and heating chamber, three dark cells and staircase hall leading up to the first floor. The area of all 12x14x25 feet. The plan of the ground floor is. Enlarges into an entrance hall 7x16 feet. On the right is the parlor, office and living room, 12x14 feet each. On the left is a room for patio, same size. On the south east corner of the building is the offices dining room, 15x12 feet entered from the contractor's office corridor. This corridor runs back 30 feet with 10 feet wide. It contains the main staircase track of windows along its corridor under the landing, and one grand entry alpine thrue. These areas are enclosed by 90 feet on the globe, is a prisoner concentration room an exterior room, the latter containing a vault. There are two clothes rackings of prisoners. In the right, all the north entrance are the cellars, main bath, dormitory and junior varsity.
On the left side of the basement off the parlor is a room 17x10 feet for person with children. A large quantity allows four 10x15 feet. Also at the auto service in the south through warehouse with one truck driver, two bus drivers and the Carollson Maker in the same room.
Passing a corner of the guards' quarters, a street team generalized considering a turn gate leading to the cellar or lower on proper. An outfit enters this as a rail does his trap, and once there is no back action to be directed from the highest cabinets the height of the law leave to "tackler." The three hardests he right under, too mediately, thus abolishing the danger of cremation while alive in cases where there is an aspiration that life is present.
During the present year crematoriums will be erected in Boston, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Detroit and San Francisco. That at Cincinnati will be finished in about two weeks, and the apparatus in the case of the others, with the exception of this city, have been ordered. Crematoriums are now being ordered all over Europe, and in the larger cities the structures are imposing and beautiful. That at Dresden is one of the most beautiful of the buildings to be seen abroad, having something like appearance of a cathedral. It is a large structure, being over 300 feet square.
The "Faithists'" Religion.
"Did you ever hear of a community called 'Faithists'?" The question was put to a reporter of the Globe Democrat by O.R. Moore of Las Cruces, N.M., last night. Having found much information and entertainment daily pertinent to this question represented the reporter in his station answered that he had heard of this order. However, he wanted more information on the subject. Yes, I guess you have heard of it but only about that particular want to teach schoolchildren in seeing a man and elsewhere positing them so as to come home and join them in New York City. The creature was not seen in Las Cruces. I can tell you the digitality of some stories in 400 and 500 access; six miles northwest on Los Angeles and there are nine kilometers far from any authority authorities. The farm was purchased originally by William Hewland of Peoria also around this time. He could not bear hearing a year to keep their matters are going slowly. In the morning Dr. Neasen went to the prison in charge.
"What are these communities? What are these communities?" It has long of its attitudinal strain that confined itself in any of the names or currents here and kept to start a world of their own."

Passage 1 is located in the southern part of the Southern line of the South, near the past year aggregation which was received on Friday, September 26th. The company on file at the government for patients on land that have been named in Mills at the Central sale of its resuscitation past year has been on this State, but that quiesces on the whole he invokes and demands wherefor grazing and reverence.
A Crematory Temple.
The San Francisco Cremation Society, which was incorporated last September, is already in business and in a few weeks the cemetery will be ordered from Venice and manufacturer in Italy. The society has general stock of 500 shares of $50 each, of whom 231 have been taken and the first assignment paid in. There is therefore still money on hand to go to work at once. The intention is to erect a building near the city cemetery, on the Point Lakes road, or Algeria Suite one of the members, but refused to give a lot suitable for the purpose. The gift has not yet been made, and what it is might be premature to give them of the proposed structure. But the laws are drawn, and will not be changed and it should become necessary to purchase a bill which the society does not wish to do, as capital is limited. It is expected that the building and apparatus will cost about $4000, and that the first cremation will take place in June or July. The President of the society is E. D. Wheeler; Secretary, Max Levay; Treasurer, Gee E. Venkel; Directors K. D. Wheeler, William Ireland, C. W. Bans, E. A. Donique, W. B. Farwell, G. E. Voelkel, S. Heydenton, Jr., H. A. Cobb and Max Levy. The Agnus california Bank is Treasurer.
There are already in operation this country three crematories. One is situated at Fresh Pond, Long Island, and has proved successful. In the first two weeks of December four bodies were cremated, and two more on the 18th. There is another in successful operation in Lancaster, Pa., and last cremated forty bodies at a cost of $600. The third cremation in operation that of Buffalo, N.Y., which was put to a fiat practical test December 17th. On this occasion the body was reduced to ashes in one hour and five minutes, under a heat of 2,33 degrees. The weight of the body was ninety-eight pounds, of the ashes three and seven-sixteenth pounds. The crematory temple is a handsome structure of stone, bearing a resemblance to a small church. It contains a large audience-room, where religious services can be performed, the body being rolled into the furnace, which is concealed, on the completion of the ceremonies. It has also rooms for the reception and care of bodies which are not to be cremated immediately.

BIRMINGHAM, MA., January 9. A fearful accident has occurred on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad gold bridge on Flint river near Wilhite's Station, Morgantown today. Two sections of a northbound freight train telescoped. Part of the first section broke loose and remained on the bridge and was run into by the second section. The shock caused the collapse of the bridge, a hundred feet M which was undergoing repairs. Five cars of the first section and the whole of the second section, consisting of an engine and seventeen cars, went down with the bridge. The wreck caught fire and eighteen cars were burned. John Johnston, bromeman of the second section, fell under the engine and was drowned; Henry Bateler, brakeman was caught under a car and burned to death; Enner W. D. Johnston, brother of the dead Bateler was actually burned; Conductor George Young and a negro brakeman named Thomas McCray were seriously burned. The freight consisted mostly of pig iron, which will be saved. Conductor L. O. Harris of the first section, swam across the almost frozen river to flag the north bound passenger train, which was to come along in a few minutes.

THE BIBLE AND RAILROAD PASSES.
It is a question whether railroads are ever referred to in the Scriptures. Probably not, though the following from Nanum 11:4 might almost be taken for a description of a railroad train. The chariots shall rage in the streets; they shall postle one against another in the broad ways; they shall seem like torches; they shall run like the lightning.
It is still more doubtful whether railroads are ever allied to the Bible; but the following reply by a well-known railroad officer was certainly very applicable to far as the name Selah is concerned.
Ker Sylah Brown—Dear Sir—It affords me pleasure to enclose you here with passes as appointed in your favor of the 20th last. Allow me to refer you to Psalm xxxi. Two thousand years ago him his heart's design and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah

CASH FOR OLD LETTERS.
The Market Value of Answers Written to Quack Cure-Alla.
Detroit News
"How do these people who pretend to give service and send medicine for nothing make it pay?"
"Strange as it may seem," replied a physician, "the part of the business which these quacks advertise to do for the good of humanity pays them nothing at all. They are like the Irishman who sold eggs at a loss. He said that it was due quantity that paid him. The same way with these people. It's the quantity that pays them. It isn't the amount of medicine they send out either, but merely the number of letters received that makes that kind of business profitable. How listen, and I'll tell you. Take one case. It is typical of thousands. A person writes to one of those firms whose advertisements appear in every country paper in the union. He may have liver complaint, or kidney trouble. Perhaps he is dyspeptic or suffering from someone kind of disease. His resolves to write to one of the philanthropists and hats precisely what they want. They are not after your custom, but they do want your letter for that is the only merchandise article in the whole transaction.
"There are houses in New York," he continued, "where they make it a matter to simply trade in these letters. Many mann, after having written for medicine from a certain house and received a little box of worthless ground; heros valued at about $1 cent has been surprised a short time after to receive curators and letters from an sort of people about everything else that can be purchased with money. He wonders how people down cost have learned his address. It was that last letter he wrote to the medicine house.
As soon as that essential firm had done with the young man his application of other books we sold for a good round sum. The price varied according to the supply and demand. I have known a handle of letters numbering 1000 to have been sold for such a few years there was a claim for the cure of some diseases."
"MACHINE" SCHOOL METHODS.
How Individuality of Character May Sometimes Be Destroyed.
The people of England are apparently becoming dissatisfied with the graded system in schools, which appears to have been imported into that country from Germany and the United States. Mr. Mundeia, who is at the head of the department of public instruction, is the English florence Mann. He believes in the machine method of menuacturing scholars. Some of the local inspectors have the houses and bothers to criticise his methods and down for the government of teachers. Mr kinks, inspector of schools under the London board recently presented his reports which is a very interesting and suggestive document. In it the following paragraph reads:
Firstly, an attempt is made to carry all children along at the same rate of progress, whatever their physical or mental powers. Hence the teaching power is not fairly appoised.* The truth, the lack ward, the irregular, the delicate and those children who, from whatever cause are unable to keep pace with their fortunate schino fellows—receive more than their fair share of attention within the more highly gifted—these who can pay the forthcoming examination without troubling the teacher—receive less than the just share to which they are entitled, add toward the cause of the school year are sometimes neglected.* I met with a curious illustration of this same two months ago in a class of sixty students, ten found ten or twelve sitting silent with folded arms while their classes were either at work* or pay.* Naturally, I wanted to know why these ladies being punished for punishment it certainly was.* These boys said the assistant are quite ready for the examination they have nothing more to do, and so I give my time to prepare the others.* This is an extreme case but in a large number of schools the tendency is to leave scholars as they become perfect for the examination purely much to them selves and to concentrate all attention on
Aggregate of the Southern Pacific Land Sales.
SAN. LASSECO, January 9. The land surveyor of the Southern Pacific Company along the line of the Southern Pacific railroad for the past year aggregated 362,254 acres, for which was received $815,763. The Southern Pacific complains of the government he caused its refusal or failure to issue permits to the company on a large portion of its grants. The company claims that it has had no effect on the general land use applications for patients on over 600,000 acres of land that have remained utterly ignored since 1882. Commissioner W. H. Mills at the Central Pacific states that too many heartland lands along that line for the past year has been much less than found in this State, but that in Nevada and Utah quite the reverse is the case. The cash receipts on the whole has been ten per cent in a truncated last year. Mr. Mills says that impurity and demand from the East and elsewhere for grazing lands is increasing so rapidly and rapidly. The demand now is fully permitable for when please.
Dear Sir,
It is an old experience that the Scriptures can be made to sustain any doctrine or dogma if it be ingeniously applied, but I congratulate at such an array of tests upon to base a claim but travel over our road, and the more so be siding you with halt fare permit I congratulate I was complying strictly with the most liberal efforts of transportation to be maintained in the Bible. But to know you that I look to Holy Wait as an authority for requiring free passes, permit und to quote few prescripts on the subject of passenger transportation. I hang XX.39. The average human being will not be have a man is starving unless he can see his ribs. A man never gets much sympathy for a broken leg until it is all doubling in spines. A cannonbe on the back of a fellow's neck will inspire more pity than a hidden spinal complaint. A man may travel around with an uneasiness of the nose and the fellow who has the strenuous need to go to bed with a sicklehead will get aid to elites and stuff his bad friends can send him. This is a cruel world.
"Everybody tells me I'm looking well," said a young fellow the other might last week I had a cold in my head and everybody sympathized with me. Now that it has gone down and is shed my bronchial tubes I feel as if I were for consumption, I don't get any sympathy at all.

How Sympathy Depends on Appearance.
I have come to the conclusion that human sympathy is human research on appearances. A man may be suffering acutely from some sudden trouble of the brain or the body but he will not realt that as much sympathy as the man whose eye watery and whose nose is inflamed from a cold in the head One fellow will have a headache that is solitary portion of his anatomy open but he leaveth with the hollow cushion will divert every arm of human together in viability.I don't know anything more ex-plication than to have stood out you how well you are looking at when you've got the toothnec It is much more bearable to be told you look sick when you are well than to be crunched upon your healthy appearance when you are sick.

A Chinaman Naturalized.
Portland Or., January 9. — Naturalization papers were issued to day to Jim Westfall, the Chinese contractor on the Oregon Pacific Railroad. This is the first Chinaman ever naturalized in Oregon, and it is stated to be contrary to law.
Lack of competent white laborers has caused the temporary suspension of the steam laundry recently started at Santa Rosa in opposition to Chinese labor.
The Term "Chestnut."
It is with genuine satisfaction we learn that the term "chestnut," as applied in the colloquial slang of the day, to a state joke, is no longer upon the character of the chestnut of commerce and the Italian toning machine. A gentleman writing to the New York Sun assists with every appearance of authority that "chestnut" as oprahribulously applied to a joke was first used concerning some heavy writings in the performance of a minster company at the Chestnut Street theater, Philadelphia. One of these was repeated in the lobby of the Continental hotel in that city, and the monitor was promptly reimbued on the ground that the Chestnut Street theatre had a copyright on it. From this actors came to apply the single word "chestnut" to every story they heard frequently repeated.
Without this explanation the public might have gone on using the term "chestnut," supposing all the time that it derived its slang significance from the very unpleasant situation occasioned by biting into a "most seeming fair" nut of the custard vines only; to fill the mouth with the bitterness of its mold or the dustiness of its must.
Cattle Shrinking by Shipment.
Nation (No known)
Those not conversant with the subject would hardly suppose that cattle will shrink more in process of shipment in severe cold than in severely hot weather, yet such is the case: indeed nothing will so quickly reduce the weight of a ripened animal as to subject it to a long ride in a stock car with the thermometer below zero. Animal life is sustained by combustion, and the bullock or pig in transit through an ice atmosphere is being slowly burned up in flesh and tissue.
Death for One Blunder.
Among the 1,200 laws regulating the French press is one centuries old, which threatens the proof reader with death for even one blunder.
Japanese girls, it is said, use their finger nails as tens when writing love letters.
A peculiar Settlement.
One of the most peculiar communities in Michigan is at Nassau. Though founded just six years ago but 412 years old, the erratic association—or the settlements—in fact, but a society providing a prefect-three men and three women, educated by all the adult men and women annually—Germany is the only language spoken and only two the general manager and the doctor know English. They live entirely by themselves taking no interest in outside world, and the women work in the fields the same as them.
Dynamic Circulation.
Still another wonderfull use has been found for currency. Recently electrodes connected with a variety of the power of forty ordinary banks were put into fort five gallons of fresh milk, and in exactly four and one half minutes the build was as diarymen may encurred butter rising on the surface. The quantity obtained was truly signal to that produced in the ordinary way, and the quality perfect.
Water with Lead in It.
Paralysis, cholel, gout, rheumatism, kidney disease, blundness and insufficiency have all come it seems from drinking water with lead in it. Under these circumstances a simple test for discovering the presence of lead in water may well be useful. It consists of adding a little tinure of each metal which if there be the least trace of lead in the water, will color it blue instead of rose.
Germans in the Service.
The twenty-five Germans who were engaged in Berlin by Li Hong Iao have all had to take Chinese names upon entering the service of the Central empire. One of them, who was formerly captain of a corvette, is now called Wang Li Triang, which when turned into English means Mr. High Wall. Another German officer is now named Lin Pao, or Mr. Six Cannons.
An Additional Suggestion.
The Pacific Medical Journal, referring to a recent writer who asserts that Maine lumbermen are free from dyspepsia because they are in the habit of using chewing gum, says that "if he would add to his suggestion of using chewing gum that of becoming a lumberman the remedy would be very effective."
