Washborn has been fitting to her his apparatus which is intended to enable her to steer herself. Tiller ropes are attached to the end of a piston rod that works in a long cylinder placed athwartships: To operate the tiller compressed air is let into one end or the other of the cylinder, thus throwing the piston from side to side. The valve which allows the compressed air to enter the cylinder is controlled by a little brass cylinder, which also is operated with compressed air. The valves of this little cylinder are, in turn, operated with an electrical current passing around magnets, just as a telegraph machine is operated. The vessel is made to steer herself by connecting the compass card with these magnets in such a way that when the vessel deviates from her course, and thus revolves about the compass card, even to the fraction of a point, the circuit through the proper magnet is completed, the proper valve in the air cylinder is opened, which in turn throws open the valve of the big cylinder on the proper side, and the tiller is so moved that the vessel is brought back on her course. The device for completing the circuit by means of the movements of the ship with reference to the compass card is very simple. A vertical needle is pivoted above the card, so that its lower end passes down through a slot at right angles to the poles. The upper end of the needle stands between two platinum points, which are connected with insulated wires leading to the magnets controlling the valves of the cylinders. At a trial of the apparatus before a number of naval officers on the vessel as she lay at the wharf yesterday, the compass card was swung from side to side by means of a bar of steel. The moment the vertical needle above it touched a platinum point the circuit was completed, and the helm was thrown to one side. When the card vibrated back it drew the helm over to the other side very promptly. There is a device by which the compass card control can be cut out and the motions of the ship controlled by a small wheel turned by a seaman. The officer of the deck also can cut out all the other circuits and throw the helm from side to side by moving a small lever on the shoulder. There is a device by which the compass card control can be cut out and the motions of the ship controlled by a small wheel turned by a seaman. The officer of the deck also can cut out all the other circuits and throw the helm from side to side by moving a small lever on the bridge. While the apparatus works smoothly and promptly in smooth water, it has yet to be tested in a seaway. In connection with this device for steering the ship, Engineer Towne has invented an apparatus for making the ship's distilled water palatable. He takes air that has been compressed for use in the cylinders, runs it through a jacket of sea water to cool, and then discharges it into a tank of distilled water. The expansion of the air, of course, reduces the temperature of the water in proportion to the degree to which it has been compressed, and, when bubbling up through the water, it aerates it, thus removing the flatness characteristic of water which has been either distilled or boiled. A Singular Appetite. The Medical Record publishes the following communication by Dr. C. C. Burke of Texarkana, Texas, who vouches for the accuracy of the facts: I witnessed on our streets a few days ago what seemed to me to be an impossibility, a human being eating glass, I might say, by the wholesale. I had heard of the negro before he reached our town, and I, like all others, disputed his ability to eat the glass without its doing him serious injury. When he arrived in our city I witnessed his exhibition both in private and public, and I am now thoroughly satisfied, from careful examination of his mouth and throat, before and while eating the glass, that he eats it fairly and squarely. He is not very particular to chew it fine. I saw a piece in his mouth, after he had chewed it, one-quarter by one-half inch long, made into all kinds of shapes and sizes by crushing it with his teeth. He informed me that he had been at it for twenty years, and had never had the least discomfort from its effects. He eats it in any quantity, from a small piece to a whole lamp chinney at a time, and keeps it up during the day, making his living by exhibiting his extraordinary power of eating glass. Experiments have recently been conducted with a view to improving the quality of the wine produced in the Cape Colony. Some Montague wine, purchased last season, has been since March subjected to a new treatment, with the special object of removing the excess of tannic acid from the liquor. The wine when purchased is said to have been brownish-red in color, with a rough, astringent taste. The wine was racked, the racking consisting of simply bringing the wine in contact with the air by moving it from clean cask to clean cask. The wine thus manned would be most palatable. (San Diego Union.) Among the compositions handed in by the applicants for teachers' certificates during the examination held at the Russ school house this week, is one on "Farming." There is no name to the paper, the applicants being designated by numbers; but the handwriting is that of a lady, and from the tenor of her composition she has doubtless taught in some of the country school districts. What she has not seen of farming she has evidently read about. Below are her views on—farming: This is a subject that is well understood by school teachers, but better by lawyers and especially well by editors. It may be divided into stock-raising and farming. Stock-raising requires many thousand dollars invested in Hereford cattle, a large range for these cattle, cow-ponies and cowboys to attend to them on the range, and an eye on the Chicago market to know when to ship the fat cattle. Farming in California seems to require a frame shanty, a well and a windmill, and either a man devoting his attention in raising grain, fruit or honey, or a woman devoting her attention to the man that he should be diligent; or, a woman attending personally to grain, fruit or feed. In Utah farming is quite different, the most attention is paid to raising babies. In the Eastern and Middle States it is still different. They have enough cows on the farm so that butter and milk are quite common. There, children from one month to fifty years old, think nothing of having a piece of bread with real butter on it, or a bowl of real milk at any time when they are hungry. This is an immense subject—it includes "The Beauties of Country Life," "Irrigation," "Boarding the School-Ma'am," "Ensilage," "Barbed Wire Fences," "Herding the Pigs in the Acorn Patch," "The Controversy between the Bee Men and the Grape Men" and much more. I will only give you Horace Greeley on "Farming" and Bill Nye on "Why the Boys Don't Stay on the Farm," as the most interesting and instructive authors on this subject. A few rules for farmers in closing: Don't be afraid of dirt, always be neat and clean. Be up before daylight in the morning, and keep busy till after dark six days. The Mirror is no flatterer. The Honsdale, Penn., Despatch relates that a neatly-dressed, fresh-looking woman, about thirty years of age, applied to Harry Foster, the Erie ticket agent in that place, for information as to the lowest rate of fare for herself and family to Warren, Penn. "How many persons?" asked the agent. "Myself and my eleven children," she said. As soon as Agent Foster could catch his breath he exclaimed: "Eleven children! Great Scott, madam! Not all yours!" "Certainly, sir," replied the woman, evidently surprised at the agent's question and manner. "Whose would they be if not mine?" In the name of goodness, then, how old are they?" asked the agent, mopping the perspiration from his forehead. "Well, sir," said the woman, after a short mental calculation, "three of them are nine, three of them are seven, two of them are five, and three of them are three years old." Agent Foster dropped into a chair as though some one had hit him with a club. "Madame," said he, "you deserve to have a pass for twelve. Come in again in a few days and I'll see what can be done." The agent ascertained that the woman's name was Cullen, and that she had presented her husband with eleven children at four births. One of the greatest leaks of government money is undoubtedly through the pension office. Twenty years have passed since the civil war ended, says New York Sun, yet the list of pensioners is not only greater than ever before, but growing enormously. Ten years after the close of the war it had begun to dwindle, as it naturally would on account of the deaths of veterans, the marriages of soldiers' widows, and the coming of age of their children. Then the legislation of Congress made a change. The arrears act alone added an ultimate liability variously estimated in official documents at between $254,000,000 and $521,000,000, and not yet determined. As years roll on, the fruits of this legislation become apparent. Although the num- RAILROAD LANDS For sale on reasonable terms. Apply to, or address W. H. MILLS, JEROME MADDEN, Land Agent, C.P.R.B.
