WEEKLY GAZETTE SATURDAY...OCTOBER 31, 1885 Heinigkeiten. The Board of Directors of the A. U. W. Co. will meet in special session to-day. Rev. G. A. Irvin of Kansas will preach in the Presbyterian church Sunday morning. After paying all premiums the managers of the Downey Fair have a surplus of $700. The A. U. W. Co. assessment becomes delinquent on Tuesday, and the delinquent list, if any, will be published next Saturday. Mr. E. P. Newbold leaves next week for Philadelphia, where he will spend the winter. We wish him bon voyage. The Gazette acknowledges a visit from Mr. P. W. Marston, Journal Clerk of the last Legislature. He has been visiting Col. Edwards at Santa Ana. We were mistaken in saying that Anaheim did not have an exhibit at the Fair last week. There was one (1) bottle of oil from the oil wells. We make the amende. Read the change in the advertisement of Kellogg Bros. This enterprising firm has added largely to their stock lately and they are offering immense bargains. In one week from the time the bridge at Yuma was destroyed by fire, it was reconstructed so that trains could pass over it, although the material had to be gathered from distances ranging from 250 to 750 miles. S. T. Anselmo shot and inflicted severe wounds on an Italian in Sonoratown, Los Angeles, on Saturday night. The Italian claimed that Anselmo's "woman" had robbed him. The Railroad Situation. Indications point strongly to the immediate building of the Riverside, Santa Ana and Los Angeles railway, down the valley to Los Angeles. The Riverside committee have been notified to secure a right of way below Riverside to the Temescal wash. About a month ago, Messra. took a contract to grade five miles of road from the junction to the arroyo; this contract is nearly completed. On Monday morning, Mr. Grant commenced work on a seven mile contract from the arroyo to Arlington. If the road is not going any further than Arlington at present, what will the first force of graders do? They lay still at San Bernardino a month or so, in order to get work on the Riverside road. Would they have done so for a simple four weeks' contract? Again, the Riverside committee have been notified to get a right of way from Arlington to the Temescal wash, a distance of five or six miles. We have reliable information, which leads us to believe that the railroad will be pushed at once to the Lower Santa Ana valley; that a line will then be built down the coast to Oceanside, and that another line will be pushed to Los Angeles without delay.—Riverside Press and Horticulturist. There is strong, solid comfort in the information given in the above extract. Those who have studied the situation most closely have never faltered in their opinion that the road would be built down into this valley, all reports of "pools" to the contrary notwithstanding. Taking the narrow, local view of it, the question of the route which the road will take after it leaves the Santa Ana Canyon is the overshadowing one with our people. Though they will have reason to rejoice at the building of a competing road, it is very essential to their complete happiness that the track be placed where it will do them the most good. Mr. Cox and Mr. Saxton were in Riverside on Tuesday and on their way home they saw the long line of grade stakes from Riverside down to the Temescal Wash, running in the direction of the Newberry vineyard. Negotiations are now pending for the right of way through that vineyard. This would indicate that the road will cross the river by a bridge at its narrowest point and come down this way. On the north side of the river, passing through the Kraemer ranch, thence through the southern portion of Mr. Crowther's land, thence across country to Plain. Ed. The price list of delicacies to be had at the Westminster pork-packing house is published to-day. Send orders by postal card and the goods will be delivered by Mr. Bowley for a nominal fee. Anaheim Lodge, No. 85, A. O. U. W., is preparing for a musical festival which it intends to give in a few weeks. There is much talent in the lodge, and they have been promised assistance from brethren of other lodges, so that the coming affair will be an entertainment of rare merit. There is in the office of the Immigration Association a walnut sapling over 10 feet in length which is but three years from the seed. It was grown on Mr. Erwin Barr's place, and is a notable illustration of the adaptability of the soil here to the growth of that most profitable tree. An interesting rumor has gained some credence that the Southern Pacific Company intends to remove its workshops from Sacramento to Los Angeles. Such a proceeding would be a boon to the city and county. The addition of a thousand skilled mechanics to the population of Los Angeles is a consummation devoutly to be wished. A reservoir with a capacity of 600,000 gallons has been completed at Cherry Valley San Gorgonio Heights. A reservoir with a capacity of 400,000,000 gallons has been completed on three sides about six miles from Anaheim. These three sides were completed at the creation; the necessary fourth enclosure will be completed—? Robert Lofthouse, a brakeman on the asadena railroad, was killed on Saturday while coupling cars. Some rails on a car had shifted while coming down the grade and projected forward, so that when the deceased stopped between the cars to couple them, the projecting ends of the rails struck him on the head and breast. Doceased was 43 years of age and leaves a wife and two children. The Santa Barbara Independent says: The Pacific Coast Steamship Company are, we are informed, intending to put the State of California and the Queen of the Pacific on Mr. Cox and Mr. Saxton were in River-side on Tuesday and on their way home they saw the long line of grade stakes from Riverside down to the Temescal Wash, running in the direction of the Newberry vineyard. Negotiations are now pending for the right of way through that vineyard. This would indicate that the road will cross the river by a bridge at its narrowest point and come down this way. On the north side of the river, passing through the Kraemer ranch, thence through the southern portion of Mr. Crowther's land, thence across country to the north end of Los Angeles street, thence but having built the road thus far we rest content. Having reached the Anaheim depot, it can stop there or go on for aught we care. The Riverside Press of the 27th inst. says: "The grading on the Riverside, Santa Ana and Los Angeles railway will be completed to Arlington by the last of this week or the first of next, and then something definite will be known about the immediate extension down through Bed Rock Canyon. We believe the extension will be made." The death of Walter, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Landell, was the climax of a short but extra severe attack of typhoid pneumonia. He was of strong physique, and the hopes of recovery which that fact engendered were gaudily broken by death. Walter was a genial, industrious boy, and a favorite with his young friends. They testified their regard for him by decorating the Episcopal church with a lavish profusion of beautiful flowers, and the funeral from the church on Thursday was very largely attended, and sympathy toward the bereaved family was spontaneously and freely tendered. So many families have moved into this neighborhood lately that an embarrassing condition of school affairs has resulted. There are 82 pupils in the primary department—just about twice the number for which there are accommodations. It has been found necessary, therefore, to class the scholars in that department into two divisions, allowing one division to attend school in the morning and the other to attend in the afternoon from 1 to 4 o'clock. The new system will take effect on Monday, and the scholars were yesterday notified to what division they belonged. Suit has been instituted in Justice Fox's court against Constable Bohn by Mrs. Annie Genedine in which plaintiff claims $299 damages for false imprisonment. Plaintiff was arrested on Thursday of last week by Bohn for disturbing the peace, and incarcerated in the jail for several hours. The succeeding day she was found guilty and fined $10 by Justice Fox. The suit for damages is based on the ground that the arrest was illegally made. The date of the trial has not yet been fixed. This is in order to make the promised connection with the railroad at San Diego. These steamers will touch at Santa Barbara and San Pedro each way, carrying passengers and fast freight only. The plan goes into effect as soon as the connections are made at San Diego. The safe in the depot of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company at San Fernando was opened by crackman Tuesday night and robbed of a considerable sum of railroad funds and $100 worth of property belonging to the agent. The burglars bored a hole just below the combination lock and, with gunpowder, blew it off. The robbery was discovered by the conductor of the south-bound train, who went into the San Fernando leopat at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday and found the room full of powder smoke. In a prize contest between the Thirty-Eights Engine Company and Confidence No. 2 in Los Angeles on last Saturday, the hostage of the Thirty-Eights broke away from the men holding it and struck Assessor Bilderrain on the leg, inflicting a severe injury. A few minutes later Confidence broke away and struck Sheriff Gard on the left hip, penetrating to the rectum. The wound was exceedingly painful and will keep him in bed for several weeks. The deposition on the contest was that Confidence No. 2 beat the Thirty-Eights Engine, No. 1, in throwing water about sixteen feet farther on an average. The Thirty-Eights bent on the first water by four and a half inches. It is said the Rev. J. A. Emery of Tustin has received a call to a San Francisco church, and that he will probably accept Mr. Emery's energy, industry and talents should have a wider field than that afforded by his present location, and while we should regret his departure from this vicinity we should greatly rejoice at what would doubtless be classed as his promotion. Mr. J. Bennerscheidt is the fortunate possessor of two copperplate engravings executed in 1752 and 1753. They are both landscapes, and creditable works of art considering the date of their printing. They will doubtless command a big price when brought to the notice of antiquarians, which the owner proposes to do. The German edition of the Anaheim Immigration Association pamphlet will be ready for distribution in a few days. It will contain, in addition to the most important matter in the English edition, much other information of peculiar interest to the people among whom it will be circulated. Mr. Luedke has decided to begin immediately the erection of a one-story brick building, 20x40 feet on the lot on Center street opposite the Anaheim Hotel. The contract will be let in a few days. Insure against fire in the first-class company for which Richard McRose is agent. Paliciss written and delivered at once. Plan of Study Ed. California Raisins [American Grocer, New York] The following letter is in response to our inquiry for light on the California raisin question, and comes from a careful, shrewd and wealthy observer. While having large interests in California, he is in no way connected with the raisin deal of this season. He says: ANAHEIM, Cal., Oct. 13, 1885. Editor American Grocer:—I have noticed but paid little attention to the bear articles on raisins. I thought such articles unlikely to accomplish the end they had in view. The assertion of the bears that they are making this fight against the speculators and not the growers would sound well if, in this instance, every whack at the back of a speculator did not result in a rap on the head of the producer. Besides, we here remember too well how the same bears tried a few years ago to do just what the present bulls are now doing—and failed to make a success of it. They didn't seem to be so much opposed to speculation then as now. Then, too, there is such a thing as a bear speculator, and we have heard of their doing such wicked things as making contracts to sell raisins at $2 per box, and then hammering the price down to $150, just for the benefit of the public! If it was a fact—and it is unproven—that raisins can be laid down in San Francisco at $150 per box, with a nice profit to the producer, it does not prove that the latter could not make a little better profit, and make equally as good a use of it as anyone else if allowed to obtain $175 or $2 per box. The fact is if the grower cares to use the simplest machinery and extract the juice of the grape for wine or distillation, he can obtain $25 to $30 per ton for his grapes without running the risks of drying, which involve rotting, injury from damp or frost and the damage principle reviewed with the analysis of everything done. Much board and slide work done without books. Pupils make questions to illustrate every principle. No rules to be learned but made from analysis.Much mental drill.
