THE CHARLES A. TOGELER COMPANY, Belle Owners and Manufacturers, Baltimore, Maryland, T. R. A. W. H. MASSEN M.D., D.D.S. DR. WILDER D.D.S. MASSER & WILDER, DENTISTS, EVERYTHING. A lady in Stafford county, named Lynn, is the mother of five pairs of twins, all boys, and all living. Stafford is a productive county. The Emperor of Anam uses a water pond as a money safe. Hollow trees are used to store it in, and these are sunk in the pond, which is guarded by alligators. The money returns no interest, but neither has the bank ever failed. The flag of the Chicago Socialists is red and black, signifying destruction, and some of the devices carried in a recent procession were "Every Government is a Conspiracy Against the People," "The Greatest Crime To-day is Poverty," "Down with the Throne, the Altar and the Money-bag." The Goshen, N. Y., police force has been supplied with rawhide whips, to be carried during the daytime instead of the ordinary locust clubs. Owing to the ease and safety with which they can be wielded, it is said they inspire more terror among evil-doers than the old-fashioned clubs. Ex-Gov. Anthony once said: "The average Kansas town will vote bonds to buy a can to tie to a dog's tail." Many Kansas towns that ten years ago had bright prospects are to-day as dead as an Egyptian mammy because of recklessness in going into debt. "The manufacturers of New York city regard it as a scandalous shame," says the Philadelphia Call, "to have the poor sewing girls make shirts for forty cents a dozen in that city. They send them over here to have them made for thirty-two cents a dozen." Nebraska has now about 250,000 acres of growing forests, in which have been set 600,000 young trees. Besides these there have been planted over 12,000,000 fruit trees, over 2,500,000 grape vines, a vast number of berry bushes, plants and countless quantities of ornamental shrubs. A popular refreshment in New Orleans is frozen cream cheese. The cream cheeses are broken up small and beaten fine and smooth with an egg beater; the cream belonging to them is also whipped and then added; the whole sweetened and then frozen. The addition of peaches or fir makes this dessert. The Treatment of Oral Physiological Principles As analyzed by the Birth Review, November, 1894, work on corpulence gives practical points for the redemption to him, fattening ogous to the fattening of cattle on overfeeding. He, however current view that fat makes trary, he thinks fatty food bumen, and prevents its for plan of treatment, therefore derating the quantity of food ing off all vegetable carbon-starch, etc., allowing a moderate fat, two or three ounces daily. He also suggests that the diet notorious, greasy and succulent satiety rapidly. He but permits light wines. The plan advocated appears free from the objection to odor, which is too much like following is the diet used by Ebstein in one of his cases: Breakfast—One large cup about half a pint—without sugar of white bread or brown bread plenty of butter. Dinner—Soup, often with four to six and one-half ounces boiled meat, vegetables in minimum preferably, and cabbage were almost and potatoes altered. After dinner, a little french course a salad or stewed out sugar. Two or three pints wine, and immediately after a cup of black tea, without milk. Supper—A large cup of blonde An egg, a little fat both, or some ham with its fries, smoked or fried fish, a portion of white bread, well buttered a small quantity of cheese, a fruit. On this diet the patient loses six months. Ebatein insists on the necessity keeping to the restricted diet to corpulence is to be success- A PROMPT, SAFE, SURE CURE For Conga, Sore Throat, Hoarseness, Influence, Colda, Branchitis, Group, Wheoping Cough, Asthma, Gustay, Pales in Chest, and other situations of Throat and Lung. PILE TURNS AND STRICTURES Nebraska has now about 250,000 acres of growing forests, in which have been set 600,000 young trees. Besides these there have been planted over 12,000,000 fruit trees, over 2,500,000 grape vines, a vast number of berry bushes, plants and countless quantities of ornamental shrubs. A popular refreshment in New Orleans is frozen cream cheese. The cream cheeses are broken up small and beaten fine and smooth with an egg beater, the cream belonging to them is also whipped and then added, the whole sweetened and then frozen. The addition of peaches or figs makes this dessert superior to any ice-cream ever invented. There is a remarkable absence of pauperism in Japan, but a man with an income of $1,000 a year is considered wealthy, and a peasant or farmer who has $100 laid by for a rainy day is ranked with capitalists. It is estimated that there are less than 10,000 paupers in the whole empire of 37,000,000 inhabitants. It is a curious coincidence that the fathers-in-law of Gen. Grant's sons all suffer financial reverses like himself. Fred Grant married a daughter of Mr. Honore of Chicago, once a millionaire; Buck Grant married a daughter of Senator Chaffee of Colorado, who lost heavily; Jesse Grant married a daughter of Mr. Chapman, a former California Greens. The Clyde river, in Scotland, burned for thirty-six hours week before last. A fisherman who was wading in the water struck a match to light his pipe, and while still burning throw it in the water. Gases from the mineral workings underneath the river's bed had found their way to the surface through a fissure, and lighted up at once. Flames rose to the height of three or four feet, and were very difficult to extinguish. An extraordinary and tragic accident has occurred near Paris. A horse was seen running wildly along the road to St. Germain, the vehicle to which the animal was attached being enveloped in flames. Several persons having succeeded in catching the horse, a dreadful sight presented itself. In the bottom of the burning vehicle the body of the driver was found reduced to an almost indistinguishable heap of cinders. It is supposed that the man, having lit his pipe, fell asleep, and that the burning ashes set fire to the old woodwork. The black and red, red and white, or blue and white variegated paper used by bookbinders in covering the sides of book covers costs $40 per ream of 480 sheets. It is manufactured by a certain old family in France that owns the secret of making it, and charges its own prices. Having grown rich out of the monopoly, these Frenchmen do not now make above 100 reams annually. In a Parliamentary report, some years ago, on the condition of the district known as "the Black Country," in Mid England, the inspector wrote: "Adultery is the rule rather than the exception, and incest is fearfully common." There is no reason to suppose that much improvement has taken place. A master galvanizer was lately brought before a magistrate for turning his wife out of doors. It appeared that for years another woman, by whom he had two children, had dozen. Sheep-Raising in the South The business of the little cow which lie in the Pacilla Ocean southwest coast of Chile, and selling, is nearly all one man—Mr. Kerr by name Governor. He went there as a poor man, and is now worth $5,000,000. There are no kind on the islands, and face is covered with a bed of thick and of good quality. Theent fuel to supply the world is length of time. Covering the growth of short but very narrow upon which the sheep thrive well. The number of sheep is about 400,000. The island the hills rising many hundreds are covered with points of shadows rise 200 or 300 feet face of the peat. It rains neat in the year, and as the peat is the water stands in pools even seems to be unable to run down the hill-tops are nearly as we see. France that owns the secret of making it, and charges its own prices. It appeared that for years another woman, by whom he had two children, had lived under his roof, on whom the wife had to attend when the said children were born. Asked whether he preferred to live with his wife or the other woman, the fellow promptly replied, "the other woman." The total production of wine in France in 1884 was 27,500,000 gallons less than in the previous year. Between 1883 and 1884 22,000 acres of vineyards were entirely destroyed by the phylloxera in the Gironde district alone. Since the first appearance of the noxious insect the area of vineyards entirely destroyed has been about 84,000 acres, and that of vineyards partially damaged as much as 123,000 acres. There has, on the other hand, been an increase of more than 57,000 acres in land newly planted, chiefly with the American vine. But the worst of it is that while the vineyards damaged have often been those which produced the best wine, the fresh plantations cannot be expected, at least for a long time, to yield anything but an inferior liquid. The phylloxera has moreover, two or three powerful allies in the work of destruction in the shape of the oidium, the anthrachnose, and, in damp seasons, the mildew. For the former of these, as well as for the phylloxers, palliative remedies have been found; but it does not appear that the last two have yet been treated chemically with any success. The American vine is not much fancied in the better districts of Bordeaux; but in the Herault, Ardeche, Bouches du Rhone, and some other departments its introduction is regarded as a success. The Treatment of Corpulence on Physiological Principles (Therapeutic Quarterly) As analyzed by the Birmingham Medical Review, November, 1894, Ebstein, in his work on corpulence, gives some valuable practical points for the reduction of obesity. According to him, fattening is strictly analogous to the fattening of cattle, and depends on overfeeding. He, however, disputes the current view that fat makes fat; on the contrary, he thinks fatty food protects the albumen, and prevents its forming at. His plan of treatment, therefore, consists in moderating the quantity of food, and while cutting off all vegetable carbo-hydrates, sugar, starch, etc., allowing a moderate quantity of fat, two or three ounces daily, to be taken. He also suggests that the diet should be monotonous, greasy and succulent, so as to cause satiety rapidly. He disallows beer, but permits light wines. The plan advocated appears rational, and is free from the objection to Banting's method, which is too much like starvation. The following is the diet used successfully by Ebstein in one of his cases: Breakfast—One large cup of black tea—about half a pint—without sugar; two ounces of white bread or brown bread, toasted, with plenty of butter. Dinner—Soup, often with marrow; from four to six and one-half ounces of roast or boiled meat, vegetables in moderation, leguminous preferably, and cabbages. Turnips were almost and potatoes altogether excluded. After dinner, a little fresh fruit. For second course a salad or stewed fruit without sugar. Two or three glasses of light wine, and immediately after dinner a large cup of black tea, without milk or sugar. Supper—a large cup of black tea, as before. An egg, a little fat roast meat, or both, or some ham with its fat, Bologna sausage, smoked or fried fish, about one ounce of white bread, well buttered, occasionally a small quantity of cheese, and some fresh fruit. On this diet the patient lost 20 pounds in six months. Ebstein insists on the necessity of always keeping to the restricted diet if the tendency to corpulence is to be successfully combated.
