WEEKLY GAZETTE SATURDAY... MAY 20, 1885 Kleinigkeiten. Insure against fire in the first-class companies for which Richard Melrose is agent. Policies written and delivered at once. The Mabury tract of 320 acres near Santa Ana is being subdivided by Surveyor Kellogg, preliminary, it is supposed, to the tract being put upon the market. The house of Mr. Boege, east of the meat market, is being fitted up as a saloon for W. J. Ree, who has to evacuate his present quarters to make room for the new drug stors. A special Missionary meeting was held at the Presbyterian church yesterday afternoon, at which addresses were delivered by Rev. and Mrs. Chapin, returned missionaries from China. Daniel Newman, who lived near Agricultural Park, Los Angeles, suicided on Tuesday morning by shooting himself. He was a hard drinker, and his domestic life was unhappy. The beautiful and sweet-toned pianos used at the concert on Tuesday evening were from the establishment of Messrs. Pellegrin Bros. & Co., where a fine assortment of all kinds of musical instruments is constantly kept in stock. A drama entitled "The Last Loaf" will be given by the Placentia Literary Society on Friday evening, June 5th, at the Placentia school house. A general invitation is extended. There will be no charge for admission. The Ladies' Industrial Society will give a social on Tuesday evening next at Kroeger's Hall. A programme of musical and literary selections will be rendered with ice cream and strawberries, and an admission fee not to be out of place to add that experience. The Graduating Exercises. The stereotyped and somewhat hackneyed phrase, "large and respectable" could, with great propriety, be applied to the audience which gathered in Kroeger's Hall on Tuesday evening. The hall has seldom been better filled and certainly no audience could have been more select or appreciative of what Prof. Packard called "a characteristic programme." The performances were in the main by the Professor's pupils, the exceptions being Mrs. McClure and Mr. and Mrs. Knapp. The instrumental duet by the last named was a finished and artistic performance, and well deserved the encore it received. Mrs. McClure and Mrs. Knapp sang sweetly in duets with the Professor. Miss Nellie Bancroft, Miss Rose Davis, Miss Sarah Crowther, Miss Clara Schulte, Miss Maggie Anderson and Miss Jennie Baker, were the ladies who took part in the instrumental entertainment, and their proficiency was apparent even to the untutored ear. The solos of Miss Davis and Miss Baker gave those young ladies an opportunity to show how proficient they were; and the popular "Carnival of Venice" as rendered by Miss Davis, was a skilful interpretation of that sprightly bit of music. Of the performance of the esteemed and popular Miss Bancroft, in honor of whom the entertainment was given, it is difficult to find words to frame a compliment which would do justice to her skill. In conferring the graduating diploma upon her, Rev. Mr. Robinson stated that it was the first time in ten years that any pupil had completed the course required by the musical department of the Napa Collegiate Institute—a fact which tells of the high plane which she has reached in her musical studies by close and industrious application united with natural aptitude. Her repertoire of "Sonata No. 7," was followed by an ovation and by the bestowal of some most beautiful floral gifts. It was a proud moment for her and, we venture to say, for the "old folks" who witnessed their daughter's triumph. We feel assured that the career so auspiciously begun will witness many musical triumphs, and that there will come to Miss Nellie all the honor and happiness which the possession of such a talent ought to bring. It may not be out of place to add that experience against fire in the first-class companies for which Richard Melrose is agent. Policies written and delivered at once. Dreyfus & Co. was awarded on last Saturday to H. H. Roper of Santa Ana, his bid being the lowest of the many that were tendered. The work is to be vigorously pushed, as the building must be ready for the crushers by August 20th. Nathaniel Cook, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of California, I. O. O. F., has appointed E. W. Champlin of Anaheim District, Deputy Grand Master of District No. 69, comprising Lodgus No. 199, 236, 303 and 315; and H. A. Boege District Deputy Grand Master of District No. 48, comprising Lodge No. 237 located in Anahelo. In Los Angeles on Sunday evening Manuel Moraga was killed by Jesus Figueras in a saloon on Alameda street. The two men quarreled over the payment for drink and it culminated in Figueros stabbing his opponent, who died in a few minutes thereafter. The murderer escaped for a time but was subsequently arrested and is now in jail. Orange buyers have been operating in this vicinity for a week past. They make a bid for the oranges in an orchard—and a very low bid it generally is—and set their own force of men to work picking the fruit. The best oranges they box and ship (without cleaning) to the East, the culla they send to San Francisco to be sold to the hucksters of that metropolis. The construction of a brick winery has been begun by Mr. Schorn. The building will be 52x31, and will consist of basement with one story above. The brick work is being done by Mr. Schindler. It will be a substantial structure and will not only add greatly to the appearance of Mr. Schorn's already fine place, but will be a source of profit to him, as well. Rev. Mr. Robinson and family will leave in a few days for one of the northern counties. They have many warm friends here who will learn of their proposed departure with regret and will hope that circumstances will be so shaped as to permit their residence here again. Mr. Robinson was presented on Wednesday by ladies connected with the Presbyterian church with a sum of money which tells of the high plane which she has reached in her musical studies by close and industrious application united with natural aptitude. Her repelling of "Sonata No. 7," was followed by an ovation and by the bestowal of some most beautiful floral gifts. It was a proud moment for her and, we venture to say, for the "old folks" who witnessed their daughter's triumph. We feel assured that the career so auspiciously began will witness many magical triumphs, and that there will come to Miss Nollie all the honor and happiness which the possession of such a talent ought to bring. It may not be out of place to add that Anaheim is fortunate in having as a citizen such an accomplished professor of music as Proof Packard. The Grasshoppers The grasshoppers are beginning to make their unwelcome presence felt, in spots. They have devoured some born in North Anaheim and appear to be meditating an attack on some of the vineyards in that district. Mr. R.J. Norrisha is ready to give them battle with an army of drunks which he has gathered to protect his wines. A Sacramento paper says: Captain Westcott has related some interesting facts connected with the grasshopper scourge at the California Rancho Company's vineyard near Rockton. The pests are still at work upon the plant vigorously and with most disastrous results. This vineyard is cloven yellow and was now very best. The injury is malenable, and the question is being debated whether the vines are not killed. Captain Westcott having seen the statement concerning the reported successful work in driving the pest away by burning sapurum immediately investigated the matter, interviewing those who had used it and also by trying it himself, and found that no good results were obtained. The supposed success proved, after a few hours, to have been fallacious. Captain Westcott thinks the only question left is, how soon they will quit and leave of their own accord. The ditch crematory process he thinks might be successful, but requires, he says, an army of persons to operate. A strange thing noticed in this vineyard is that the grasshoppers do not touch the vines of the Mission grapes, but will clean all others around them and not touch a leaf of this variety. There is another small vineyard near the Rancho Company which has not thus far been molested. Waste of Water The State Engineer, while visiting Riverside last week, measured the water in the Riverside canal at various points for the purpose of ascertainting the amount of water lost by seepage and evaporation. The loss was ascertained to be twenty inches per mile; and as Riverside has thirty miles of large canals, 600 inches of water is lost from them. It may be set down as a fact, also, that the loss is proportionately greater in the smaller distributing ditches, as they are not used continuously and absorb great quantities of water every time they are used. The testimonial was in part made up with the proceeds of the refreshments sold at the concert on Tuesday evening. It will be seen by the notice in our advertising columns that the firm of Hanna & Keith has been dissolved by the withdrawal of Mr. Hanna who, after spending a vacation of a month or so in the mountains, will remove to Los Angeles and engage in business in that city. The departure of Mr. Hanna and his estimable family will be a decided loss to this community, and one to which we cannot reconcile ourselves. We will continue in the hope that, as there are many slips 'twixt the cup and the lip, something may arise in the interim which will cause them to reconsider their determination to remove. Mr. Keith will continue business at the old stand, and will without doubt be accorded a large share of patronage. He will have the assistance of Mr. Hanna in Los Angeles, who will be able to send many customers here, as he will make a specialty of Anaheim lands. Business entrusted to Mr. Keith will receive careful and prompt attention. A fine assortment of the best imported violin, guitar and banjo strings just received at Pellegrin Bros. Music Store. May 23-4 The State Engineer, while visiting Riverside last week, measured the water in the Riverside canal at various points for the purpose of ascertaining the amount of water lost by seepage and evaporation. In the upper ditch of the Anaheim Union Water Company, which is sixteen miles in length, there is a loss of 450 inches of water out of a thousand inches turned into the ditch; that is, when ten heads of water are turned into the ditch from the river, five and one-half heads are received at the lower end by the distributing zanjero. In distributing the water to irrigators there is another large loss of the valuable fluid. In the lower main ditch the loss is about the same as in the upper ditch, though it is only about one-half as long. This fearful waste of water is not unavoidable. It can be prevented by either conveying the water in pipes or by cementing the open ditches. Either process, however, involves an appalling expenditure of money, which will delay reform until what is quite probable, the State assumes control of the irrigation works. Postoffices Closed To-day This being Memorial Day the Anaheim postoffice, in common with every other postoffice, will be closed. The regulations say: The 30th of May will be observed by all postmasters by closing their offices between the hours of 10 A.M. and 5 P.M. The Anaheim Extension Under the above heading the San Diego Sun luminously says: The southern portion of Los Angeles county is very anxious for the extension of the Southern Pacific to San Diego. There is a large and very fertile section of country there, only a little further from San Diego than Los Angeles, that would derive a great benefit by a rail connection with this bay. Los Angeles county is one vast farming section, while there is only one large city to be supplied with the products of the farm. The Los Angeles markets are therefore frequently glutted by an over-production. The southern portion of the county—Anaheim, Santa Ana, Orange and other small towns—would secure a double market by the extension of the railroad to San Diego. At some time in the near future this same part of Los Angeles county will be a county by itself. Its population is now all that is necessary for the purpose, and its interests are so peculiarly its own, that it is only a question of a short time when it will be divided off, and will probably be called Orange county. Several attempts have already been made to effect this division, but so far have been defeated each time. The addition of this rich section as a tributary point to San Diego is of immense importance to the merchants of this city. The handling of vast stores of wine, wheat, wool, fruits, etc., would go to our commission merchants, and a general reciprocal exchange of products would result. It is the nearest point of any of the great farming sections of other counties which we hope in time to render tributary to this city. The New Revenue Collector Hon. Asa Ellis of El Monte has been appointed Collector of Internal Revenue, vice Hartson resigned. The appointment was a genuine surprise. Like the knowing politician that he is, Mr. Ellis went about the matter without blare of trumpet or beating of drums, and pulled the "underground" wires in the most effective fashion. The horde of other aspirants were not only surprised but shocked when the telegram bringing the news was made public and conveyed to the good old Democratic gentleman who was at work in his hay field at El Monte, seemingly: Dobner sells Ladies' Jerseys at $1. tf A breach of piece—When the gun burst. A Nice State of Things THE ENACTMENT AGAINST TEA ADULTERATION A DEAD LETTER. In an interview with Tea Examiner Davies of New York, a Times reporter (New York Times, August 23d, 1883), speaking of tea adulterations says: "While teas coming to this and other ports so adulterated may be rejected and refused admission to this country, the pure tea, or tea not adulterated beyond the standard given in the table below, may be imported and poisoned—for the coloring is nothing less than poisoning—in this city. There are now five firms in this city known to be engaged in the coloring of tea after importation, using the material described. The coloring enhances the value among ignorant purchasers, who want the tea they buy to be of the pale-green shade, always indicative of adulteration. This treatment cannot be prevented by the United States authorities, though under our State laws the sale can and should be prohibited by the Board of Health." Will people never understand that there is only one way to obtain pure tea of good quality, and that is to buy it in its original package, shipped by responsible firms? It is needless to cullize the Perfection Tea Can, its prestige being already so high as to make this superfluous, but the importers of Eola Tek would beg to call attention to the fact that both this high-class article and their "White Cross" brand are imported only in this original and guaranteed package. Candor—Mistress (catching the butter helping himself to a glass of '34 port) James! I'm surprised! Mr. James—So am I, mum I thought you out! The horde of other aspirants were not only surprised but shocked when the telegram bringing the news was made public and conveyed to the good old Democratic gentleman who was at work in his hay field at El Monte, seemingly oblivious of all things political. But everybody except those who wanted the place themselves concede that it was an appointment eminently fit to be made. Mr. Ellis is an able man, a tireless worker, and will earn his salary. Nothing can be truthfully said against him, or against the administration for appointing him. We beg to tender to the Messrs. Ellis and Cleveland our best congratulations. It appears, however, that some of the disappointed ones die hard. A Washington telegram says that it is sought to have the appointment revoked on the ground that he is a default tax collector. The charge is false, of course, and is so branded by the District Attorney, the present incumbent of that office and by the County Auditor. George H.
