WOMAN AND HOME.
How the World Is Filled with Made-Over People.
Manners of Young Married Women — The Koosier Poet's Tribute—Indian Girls—Cuban Beauties—Stray Notes.
[Mrs. M. L. Rayne in Detroit Free Press.]
"WANTED—A girl to make over."
The above appeared in the advertising column of a city paper. It is so indelicate that the reader is left to imagination as to whether the girl is wanted to make over as a wife, or a seamstress, or merely to serve as a model for some one whose training, prejudices, bigotries and ambitions are seeking for an educational outlet.
Every day some young man is looking for a girl to make over. While she is his sweet-heart she is simply perfect, but as soon as the honeymoon is ended the making-over process begins. It has its regular formulas, one of which is like this:
"Did you make those biscuits, Helen?"
"Yes, dear; they're not quite right, but I am going to improve on them."
"I supposed you knew how to make bread when I married you."
"Why, Charlie didn't I want to wait a year on purpose to learn how to cook, and you said you never cared what you eat, and didn't want to marry a cook, and all that!"
"Palawai never said such a word. Give these bullets to the cat and kill her. I'd give anything for one of my mother's tea rolls."
"Well, dear, I will write to her for the recipe. I will try hard to learn."
But a man who finds fault with one thing will find fault with another. It does not occur to the young husband that his mother is 50 years old and a farmer's daughter, and that he married a school girl who is as different from the mother-stripe as he is from the father-pattern. He is just capable of expecting her to make sausage and soft soap as mother did. Eventually he makes her over into a nondescript that is neither a companionable wife nor a comfortable housekeeper. And his highest praise is the omission of fault-finding.
David Copperfield tried the making-over process on sweet, sunny little Dora, his child-wife. She tried to live up to his kitchen and market requirements, but was glad to die and end a condition so unsatisfactory.
Children are perpetually required to make over. An original child is run in a groove, fitted to another soul. It is dwarfed and expanded at the arbitrary will of parents, until it becomes an epitome of its father, mother, uncle or cousin. These Galgrinds of learning incline the twig in their way, give it their limited sky to reach, and when it is no longer a living branch of air and sunshine and riotous life, point to it as the dry stick of their grafting.

No other blood-purifying medicine is made, or has ever been prepared, which so completely meets the wants of physicians and the general public as Ayer's Sarsaparilla.
It leads the list as a truly scientific preparation for all blood diseases. If there is a lurking taint of Scrofula about you, Ayer's Sarsaparilla will dislodge it and expel it from your system.
For constitutional or scrofulous Catarrh, Ayer's SARSAPARILLA is the true remedy. It has cured numberless cases. It will stop the nauseous catarrhal discharges, and remove the sickening color of the breath, which are indications of scrofulous origin.
"Hutto, Tex., Sept. 28, 1882."
David Copperfield tried the making-over process on sweet, sunny little Dora, his child wife. She tried to live up to his kitchen and market requirements, but was glad to die and end a condition so unsatisfactory.
Children are perpetually required to make over. An original child is run in a groove, fitted to another soul. These Galgirids of learning incline the twig in their way, give it their limited sky to reach, and when it is no longer a living branch of air and sunshine and riotous life, point to it as the dry stick of their grafting.
The world is full of made-over people. A great number went early to their graves, discouraged with the demands made upon them.
What shall I do to cure my young daughter of laughing and looking in the glass? I wrote a mother to a celebrated divine. And the answer came:
"Let her alone. Time and sorrow will cure her of both, all too soon."
A popular novelist has depicted a scene between a husband and wife, where the wife wishes to take a journey for her health.
"You don't want to travel," says the considerate husband. "It will disagree with you; traveling always disagrees with me."
She urges a sea-voyage.
"You will be sea-sick—a sea-voyage always makes me seasick." Etc., etc., etc.
Made-over people like made-over clothes are weak and unreliable. It is no sign because John's father is a shoemaker or a farmer that John will be. He might do worse, but he may do better. At away rate he has a right to ascertain his own value and do that best fitted for him.
"Blessed, thence blessed," is the man who has found his work," says Carlyle. "Let him seek no other blesseness."
It is a responsibility the thoughtful, capable soul will shrink from, that of making over a human life. But the narrow, unwise bigoted theorem is always willing to try his hand, on the principle that "fools rush in where angels fear to traip."
Manners of Young Married Women.
[American Queen.]
At the outset of married life, the complete and entire freedom from parental control and surveillance, the untried post of the ruler of her own actions, as well as those of others, which is now hers, often bewilders the girl-wife, and puts her into a state of flatter and nervousness. A much feared shower of criticisms falls upon and around the young married woman, the ordeal has to be gone through, and sensitive nuances very often feel uncomfortable, and some uses a degree miserable, with the fear of making some bander, of omitting some social duty, or of showing ignorance on any point. When the next find the right path at the outset, it is not a difficult one to keep. We will draw attention to the rocks over which she young matron often swumbles, and the thorns, bruises, and brambles in which she gets entanglements; if caution signals are set up to mark these dangerous places, the troubles they entail may be avoided.
Ostentation is a rock to steer clear of. The young wife is, of course, proud of her new position, and desires of making it an exalted one to her friends. Take the entertainment of guests, for instance. It is truly laudable to try and give the best we can to our friends, but it is a mistaken notion to think that their happiness and pleasure can be enhanced by any extraordinary efforts on the part of the emitters.
If the means and the menage be small, then let the entertainment match them in character, and do not strive to show great distance you could powder each one we wear on their faces, neck and arm as their deep, big eyes expressions. There among them all Nilsen, because, in rather high checkbook laugh, they were not was no movement They might as well walk.

ULCEROUS "At the age of two years one of my children was terribly afflicted with ulcerous running sores on its face and neck. At the same time its eyes were swollen, much inflamed, and very sore."
SORE EYES Physicians told us that a powerful alternative medicine must be employed. They united in recommending Ayer's Sarsaparilla. A few doses produced a perceptible improvement, which by an adherence to your directions, was continued to a complete and permanent cure. No evidence has since appeared of the existence of any scrofulous tendencies; and no treatment of any disorder was ever attended by more prompt or effectual results.

A PICTURE OF Mrs. Gladstone.
[London Cor, Boston Herald.]
Let me in passing, speak a word of Mrs. Gladstone. We are always curious to know something of the domestic life of great men, and wish to know if the wife has had any part in the husband's success. It is always said that Mrs. Gladstone has been a help-meet indeed, and one would be led to this opinion from the sweet wifely, motherly expression of her countenance. Mrs. Gladstone does not look older than an American lady commonly does at 50. Her hair is almost black, and her face is almost free of lines and wrinkles. English women of the last generation dressed hideously, as the majority of the present generation do. And Mrs. Gladstone, in respect of dress, belongs to both past and present. She always looks dowdy. One cannot get over the feeling when seeing her that she is of bourgeois origin. If one did not know her one would assume that she belonged to what is called here the "shop-keeping class."
When she came into the chapel on Sunday...
Girls at the Indian School.
[Atlanta Constitution.]
In Philadelphia, on Eleventh street, is a large building called Lincoln institution, where there are eighty-four Indian girl pupils. Mrs. J. B. Cox is president of the Lincoln institution, and the Indian school is under her personal supervision. The ages of these girls range from 10 to 20, and represent sixteen Indian tribes. Most of them are from the west, principally Pawnese, Santees and Chippewas. Many of them have already been partially civilized by the efforts of missionaries, and the majority of these girls will return to their own people as teachers. They are remarkably intelligent, and rapidly acquire a knowledge of reading, penmanship and music, many of them, within a few months, learning to speak English fluently, draw maps neatly, write correct compositions, and play well upon the cabinet organ. During one half the day the girls attend school; during the other half they are instructed in housework and sewing. They are neatly and uniformly dressed in blue gingham, with white colors; their hair is cut in straight bangs in front and braided in the back. They very quickly learn nice, refined habits.
Cuban Beauties.
[Clara Beile.]
There is no discounting the brilliancy of an assemblage of pretty Cubans. I saw one in a theatre. They came in their light silks, bare-leaded, except for the film of pure white or jet black lace that fell from the back of each one's head to her shoulders, ablaze with gold and gems, and sat in terraces of veriegated gaudiness with their laces and ribbons all huttering in the tremulous breezes from their waving fans. At a distance you could not see the crust of powder each one wears, and so the tints of their faces, neck and arms were as beautiful as their deep, big eyes, and languid, sensual expressions. There were many blondes among them, all looking something like Nilson, because, like the Swedes, they have rather high checkbones. But they didn't laugh, they were not quick and active, there was no movement or spirit about them. They might as well have been wax-works.

MONTROSE'S TRAGEDY.
Recalling the Romantic History of Edith May.
A Once-Popular Writer Who Still Languages in an Insane Asylum—The Author of "Theodora."
[Montrose (Penn.) Cor. N. Y. Times.]
The tragedy that recently startled this usually quiet mountain city vividly recalls a once familiar face that disappeared from these romantic scenes more than a dozen years ago. When Joe Drinker shot W. H. Cooper, the banker, a few days since on the street, he assigned as his reason for the rash act the fact that Cooper did not use his influence to prevent the incarceration of the assassin's sister, Anna, in an insane asylum, where she had been placed some thirty years back. Anna Drinker, twenty-five or thirty years ago, gave promise of a brilliant literary career by her writings under the nom de plume "Edith May." In those days northern Pennsylvania seemed little better than a wilderness to the dwellers in the large cities, and while few lovers of literature knew anything of Montrose, the readers of The Home Journal, then edited by the poets N. P. Willis and George P. Morris, soon became familiar with the writings of "Edith May," and sufficiently interested in the writer to ascertain that her real name was Anna Drinker, the descendant of an ancient Philadelphia family originally belonging to the Society of Friends, and among the first to claim for civilization the picturesque mountain slopes and sequestered vales of northeastern Pennsylvania. Susquehanna county was little better than a wilderness when Miss Drinker began to write, and the march of settlement and civilization had not driven from its deep and wooded valleys the wild deer and other game which attracted the footsteps of the hunter and furnished inspiration for the pen of the poet.
Many of Miss Drinker's descriptive pieces were devoted to this charming region. Her poems were full of dramatic fire and fervor, and equaled in glowing imagery Campbell's "Gertrade of Wyoming." She seized rich materials at her hand and made them the subject of her sublime thoughts. Her writings were strong and striking, and treated of love and adventure with more than womanly vigor. In the year 1833 a volume of her poems was published by Butler & Co., of Philadelphia. It was beautifully illustrated by some of her artist friends, and contained a portrait of the author, copied from a sketch of her by William H. Furness, Jr., the son of the Rev. Dr. Furness and brother of Mrs. Wister, well known as the translator of "Gold Elsie" and many other delightful German tales. This volume was introduced to the public by a brief preface written by N.
To Dyspeptics.
The most common signs of Dyspepalsia, or Indigestion, are an oppression at the stomach, nausea, flatulency, water-brash, heart-burn, vomiting, loss of appetite, and constipation. Dyspeptic patients suffer untold miseries, bodily and mental. They should stimulate the digestion, and secure regular daily action of the bowels, by the use of moderate doses of Ayer's Pills.
After the bowels are regulated, one of these Pills, taken each day after dinner, is usually all that is required to complete the cure.
Ayer's Pills are sugar-coated and purely vegetable—a pleasant, entirely safe, and reliable medicine for the cure of all disorders of the stomach and bowels. They are the best of all purgatives for family use.

Western Actresses.
[New York Cor. Courrier-Journal.]
John Ebbler was the discoverer of Clara Morris. Her mother was the cleaner of the old Cleveland Academy of Music, or the wardrobe woman. I think the former. The girl commenced at the lowest step, as was the custom of those days, in the ballet, but she went up the ladder with amazing rapidity. At 16 she was the leading juvenile woman of the theater. That was in 1875. She is now Siolman has famous these years.
In this same year Fanny Davenport was the youthful soubrette at the old Louisville theatre, her first regular engagement. She has just closed her season, having made a fortune with "Felora." A third western actress, who has acclaimed more than the other two, had no regular training. One day she dropped her school books and became Juliet. Are there any more left in the west?
East Indian Corsets.
[Harper's Bazar.]
The bayadies of India, who possess the most perfect figures of any woman of any country on earth, have a unique plethora of charming device among Europeans. Their corsets are formed out of the bank of a Maigasar tree on a principle which permits them every freedom of movement in breathing and in any form of exercise. These are wonderful productions of lagenody. The color resembles the skin to a remarkable degree, and the material is so fine that the most delicate touch will hardly interrupt it from human flesh. Once made, once or twice seized, the bayadies even sleeping in them. They thus reserve astonishing figures to an advanced age, without pain or discomfort to themselves.
The Observative Power of Women.
Women are of far more aseptic nature than men and can better see through others. Their over-suspicion nature often fancies them to be passing on their ideas, but also often has on what is really going on within our bodies. They connect the attack with its cause; they see into the thickest where resentment is thriving. This clear-season of women is often astounded me—even of women little remarkable for abilities. It seemed as if their passion supplied force to their intellect and sharpened their wits. I have known a jealous woman actually to know what passed within the mind of her lover and her rival, as if she could see through their breasts to scan their thoughts and examine their signs.
Oil Marks on Wall Paper.
[Chicago Herald.]
It will interest housekeepers to know that oil marks on papered walls against which thoughtless persons have laid their heels, may be removed by making a paste of water and pipe clay or fallen’s curtails, and laying it on the surface without rubbing it on, ease the pattern of the paper may be injured. Leave the paste on all night. In the morning it may be brushed off and the spot will have disappeared.

Oil Marks on Wall Paper.
[Chicago Herald.]
It will interest housekeepers to know that oil marks on papered walls against which thoughts persons have laid their beams may be removed by making a paste of water and pipe clay or roller's earth, and laying it on the surface without rubbing it on, ease the pattern of the paper may be injured. Leave the paste on all night. In the morning it may be brushed off and the spot will have disappeared.
Novelty in Table-Ware.
[Chicago Herald.]
The wife of Senator Harrison, of Indiana, has decorated eighteen china dinner plates by painting on each a different bird and on the border of the place a verse in old English text of poetry. This novelty is said to have the advantage, as each verse is one which is little quoted, of suggesting topics of conversation at a dinner party when the plates are used—an inestimable boon on such occasions.
Writing Up the Fashions.
[Atlanta Constitution.]
It is said that fashion changes so rapidly, and so many new terms, colors and fancies are introduced every week, that it requires more talent to write a comprehensive fashion letter than it does to write an intelligent editorial on the tariff or on the war in Egypt. Jennie June makes $150 a week writing fashion letters. A school of journalism for women will soon be opened in Detroit.
To Crystallize Nuts.
[Atlanta Constitution.]
To crystallize oranges and nuts, take one cup of sugar, one small cup of water, and the juice of one lemon. Let this boil until the syrup, when dropped from a spoon, looks like fine white hairs, and is brittle. Then dip small pieces of orange into this; lay them on buttered plates to dry. The whole meats of English walnuts are very nice crystallized in this way.
Apple Blossoms.
Recently two Boston brides have appropriately chosen the apple blossom as their floral decoration, in place of the orange blossom or the graceful white lilac. One bride carried a basket of these blossoms in her hand to the altar, and another received congratulations in a bower of the same, while her white satin gown was trimmed with them in combination with tulle.
Anything but pacific—The affairs of the coast Democracy.

Of her thought."
The sudden loss of Miss Drinker's reason proved a great shock to her many friends and admirers, who felt that a brilliant future lay before her in the literary world. The act of her brother, Joseph Drinker, in shooting down Mr. Cooper, whom he blamed for not trying to keep Anna out of the insane asylum, recalls the story of her bright career and its sad ending, and many who read and admired the poems of "Edith May" will learn with sorrow that the same subtle malady which blighted her reason prompted her brother to attend; the nourrous act which he thought necessary in order to avenge her. Mr. Cooper, the victim of the insane man's belts, was formerly the executor of the Drinker estate, and always took a friendly interest in the family.
A Fine Dry's Sport in New Jersey.
[New York Sun.]
An amateur up-town sportsman had been out for a day's shooting in the wilds of New Jersey, and was returning home rather elated with his success, it being his first experience.
"Pretty good luck to-day!" a reporter asked, as he handed at Cortlandt street.
"I should say so," he replied, proudly. "Look at that. There are half a dozen as fine snipe as you ever laid your eyes on."
"Snip!" exclaimed the reporter; "they are not snipe."
"What are they, if not snipe?"
"They are Jersey mosquitoes."
Nothing Like It.
At a late meeting of the Royal society in London a paper prepared by a young lady "On the Blastopore of the Newt" was read. It is expected that she will follow this up with another upon "The Cuspidor of the Owl." Nothing like these popular studies to keep up the interest.
The St. Gothard tunnel has made a great revolution in the trade of Italy. The quantity of eggs coming through it from North Italy averages between fifty and sixty toes a day. One day during the present year the stupendous quantity of 130 tons, representing about 2,000,000 eggs, was landed at Harwich direct from Italy and sent co-London.
