HOW TO BEING UP A BABY BY HAND.
Where mothers are unable to nurse their children the problem of artificial feeding becomes of high importance, especially during the summer. In a recent article by Dr. Clement Cleveland, in the Medical Record, the suggestions made under this head are so clear and definite as to be of great practical value. The Doctor lays it down as an axiom that, next to woman's milk, cow's milk is really the best food for the infant. The milk of many cows is to be preferred to that of any particular cow, from the fact that it is likely to continue more uniform. Undiluted cow's milk is too rich in fat and caseine to be readily digested by the infant, for during the earlier months a baby's power of digesting fat is very deficient. The casseine of woman's milk curdles into delicate flakes, that of cow's milk into much larger ones. Fortunately these difficulties can be overcome to some extent.
A milk should be selected that is not rich in cream. The morning's milk contains less than the evening's. On boiling, much of the cream comes to the surface in the form of scum, and is to be removed by straining. Water added to the milk helps the digestion of both fat and caseine. It can be helped also by gelatine, barley, or oat meal water, or by the addition of lime water, bicarbonate of soda or potash. The standard proportion of one part milk to two of water suits the majority of children. The doctor has found it advantageous, however, to begin with one part to three, and work rapidly up to one part to two, if the digestion continues good. He uses for the first two weeks 8 parts of milk to 24 of water; second two weeks, 8 to 20; second month, 8 to 16; third month, 8 to 14; fourth month, 8 to 12; fifth month, 8 to 10; sixth month, 8 to 8; seventh month, 8 to 6; eighth month, 8 to 4; ninth month, 8 to 2; tenth month, more milk.
Some children do better with a little water with the milk, even after the twelfth month. Both the milk and the water should be boiled. The dilution should be slightly sweetened with pure brown sugar or milk sugar, and a little salt should be added. It is well to prepare in the morning the whole amount to be used during the twenty-four hours. Cow's milk is slightly acid or neutral. To render it perfectly digestible it is sometimes necessary to make it slightly alkaline. This helps the digestion of the casseine by causing its distribution into finer flakes. When undigested flakes appear in the passages, one half to one grain of bicarbonate of soda is added to the amount of diluted milk given.

It is well to prepare in the morning the whole amount to be used during the twenty-four hours. Cow's milk is slightly acid or neutral. To render it perfectly digestible it is sometimes necessary to make it slightly alkaline. This helps the digestion of the casein by causing its distribution into finer flakes. When undigested flakes appear in the passages, one half to one grain of bicarbonate of soda is added to the amount of diluted milk given at each feeding. Should it not answer, barley water, made by boiling for hours a teaspoonful of pearl barley and a salt-spoonful of salt with ten ounces of water, may be added. This is to be used in the same proportions as the formula above. For the first month the child should be fed every two hours, never oftener, because it takes fully two hours for milk to digest.
After pointing out the fact that infants are more likely to cry on account of distress due to indigestion than from hunger, the Doctor says that children at three months should acquire the habit of sleeping throughout the night. The last bottle should be given at 10 o'clock, P.M., and the first at 6 o'clock or 7 o'clock in the morning. At first it may cry for hours, but in three or four nights an excellent habit of life will be formed. It is one of the most important points in bottle feeding that the child take the milk slowly into the stomach. Rubber nipples without openings, but in which a hole may be made with a red-hot cambric needle, are the best. The milk is drawn out slowly, and keeps pace with the formation of gastric juice. Canned condensed milk is, in the Doctor's opinion, too rich in sugar to be advisable as food for infants. Condensed milk fresh every day is not open to this objection.
Dr. Cleveland says a good deal about wet nurses, and sums up the matter as follows: "I have seen so much trouble caused by wet nurses, directly and indirectly, that I invariably advise the bottle where the infant is healthy, and the mother cannot or will not nurse her child. I believe it safer to run the slight risk of the bottle's not suiting than to introduce such an element as a wet nurse into a family. The physical defects of the bottle we understand pretty well, and can, to a great extent, guard against them. Its moral qualifications, compared with those of a wet nurse, are simply sublime."

HALL'S VEGETABLE SICILIAN Hair Renewer.
Seldom does a popular remedy win such a strong hold upon the public confidence as has Hall's Hair Renewer. The cases in which it has accomplished a complete restoration of color to the hair, and vigorous health to the scalp, are innumerable.
Old people like it for its wonderful power to restore to their whitening locks their original color and beauty. Middle-aged people like it because it prevents them from getting bald, keeps dandruff away, and makes the hair grow thick and strong. Young ladies like it as a dressing because it gives the hair a beautiful glossy lustre, and enables them to dress it in whatever form they wish. Thus it is the favorite of all, and it has become so simply because it disappoints no one.

While the owner of the melons was chasing the chum with a big dog out on the other side of the patch, young Blaine was eating his melon peacefully in the road. After awhile the owner of the melon patch came out to the place where young Blaine was eating, and said: "Where did you get them melons?" Young Blaine answered quickly, for he was always quick at everything, even in eating melons: "I can't tell a lie; I don't know." And the farmer offered him a new half-dollar, which young Blaine took. Mr. Blaine had forgotten all about this episode until Mr. Powell Clayton reminded him of it.
The Cholera.
WASHINGTON, June 28. — Secretary Freling. huysen has received a cable message from Consul Mason at Marseilles as follows:
There were four deaths in Toulon to-day. The cholera has reached Merseilles, where there were six deaths to Saturday noon. The weather is very warm, and a general exodus from the city has begun.
The Postoffice Department has been informed by the Italian Government that in view of the outbreak of Asiatic cholera in France, mails from this country intended for delivery in Italy must be enclosed by tarred sacks. This precaution is regarded necessary, because the Italian mails from this country pass through England and France. The Postmaster at New York has been instructed accordingly.
Tucson is the pride of all Arizonaans. They even claim it to be the oldest city in America, and decare that it antedates Santa Pae. Before the advent of Americans it was a Mexican hamlet, and still earlier it was an Indian village. No traces of its first occupants are to be seen to-day, but the adobe houses and narrow winding streets are Mexican.
No injurious effects can follow the use of Ayer's Ague Cure in the treatment of malarial diseases. It contains, besides a specific and unfailing antidote for misanthropic poison, other remedial agents which unite to expel the poisonous humor, purify the system, and leave it in a healthy and reinvigorated condition.
Among the best and likely which have occurred was the six-mile test of witnessed on the Delaware Brown of Philadelphia amateur. Brown was able or in size and weight, in skill and endurance kept pace behind him in one mile of Smith Ewen winning by about length; he lives at Bath him some two years past time. Of the few perilous performances great heights, I doubt the present day who have the feats performed by having in the year 1860 centre of High Bridge distance of 216 feet, the American diver; S.Worthington, known whom met their death tremendous leaps, were day. Sea bathing is the greater specific gravity fresh, the body being all other substances. Can be said, however, time which will go fast the art of becoming eased, grace and confidence practice is worth a poins but for me to sensations are more strength which one sees was previously a strained and discreet indulgence of its many virtues."
"Will you kindly wind blows?" asked at the landlord of a Florence "Certainly, sir," replied to the door, "the air."
"Thank you."
A little later the keeper:
"Have you made yet?"
"No, sir."
Well just charge for information about wind."
FAMOUS SWIMMERS.
"When Mr. Willie Beckwith and his sister, the English experts and representatives of this art, remarked when taking their departure from this country after a sojourn of some four months here last summer, that they were much surprised to find so few good swimmers in this country, the saying was a true one," said an old teacher of the art to a prominent athlete of New York. "Swimming is an old and one of the most healthful of exercises. Few know that Benjamin Franklin was considered expert at this in his day. In the cultivation of swimming as an art society has taken but very little interest, indeed, as compared with the attention bestowed on other athletic pursuits. Swimming is the most useful of all accomplishments that go to make up the complete education of a gentleman. Other athletic sports have their advocates and their enthusiastic votaries, but in all that tends to muscular development, the strengthening of the nervous system, and the renovation of the several functions of life, swimming must be admitted to bear away the palm. Among the list of good swimmers who have excelled great feats in their line, first comes probably Capt. Webb, who swam the previously often attempted distance from Dover, England, to Calais, France, 1875, crossing two full and two half tides, estimated to be equal to 50 miles, actual distance 23 miles, in 21 hours and 45 minutes. With the well-known reputation and many other subsequent feats achieved by this celebrated swimmer, it has been remarked to this day, by those who claim a knowledge of the facts, that the Captain did not fully comprehend the treacherous character of the Niagara whirlpool, from want of sufficient investigation, which brought him to so untimely a death. The Captain's original intention was to follow closely to the Canadian shore, and by so doing he would have been able to keep, as he believed, into a current which traveled with a less velocity, thinking it possible that he could pass around the border of the whirlpool and reach the river below in safety. If you throw a dog or place any other animal into a swift current, you will observe at once that the animal, immediately upon becoming immersed, instinctively points its nose against the stream, at the same time swimming in a direction toward the nearest shore, which effort, in a measure, lessons the speed with which he would otherwise be swept along. With the general knowledge of all these facts which Capt. Webb possessed, it has been often remarked, with much surprise, in
His Mistake.
A gentleman on East Fourth street found a ragged tramp sitting on his front steps eating his lunch.
"Here! What are you doing there?" he shouted.
"Partaking of a slight lunch. Will you join me?" the tramp politely responded.
"No! I don't want any of your villainous feed."
"That's so; it is pretty tough kind of fedder. I just got it out of your kitchen. Your wife must be doing her own cooking now."
"What's that, you infernal hound!" exclaimed the angry man, starting towards the tramp, still sitting quietly on the step.
"Don't get excited, sir; don't get excited; think a minute. Aren't you mistaken in calling me a hound?"
"No, I'm not; and I'll——"
"But, my dear sir, you are mistaken; I am no hound, I'm a setter."
The gentleman gazed at the trump in admiration and left him to finish his lunch.

A HOME DRUGGIST TESTIFIES.
Popularity at home is not always the best test of merit, but we point proudly to the fact that no other medicine has won for itself such universal approbation in its own city, state, and country, and among all people, as Ayer's Sarsaparilla.
The following letter from one of our best-known Massachusetts Druggists should be of interest to every sufferer:
RHEUMATISM.
"Eight years ago I had an attack of Rheumatism, so severe that I could not move from the bed, or dress without help. I tried several remedies without much if any relief, until I took Ayer's SARSAPARILLA, by the use of two bottles of which I was completely cured. Have sold large quantities of your SARSAPARILLA, and it still retains its wonderful popularity. The many notable cures it has effected in this vicinity convince me that it is the best blood medicine ever offered to the public.
River St., Buckland, Mass., May 13, 1882."
SALT RHEUM.
GEORGE ADVERWS overseeing in the Lowell Carpet Corporation was for over twenty years before his removal to Lowell afflicted with Salt Rheum in its worst form. Its ulcerations actually covered more than half the surface of his body and limbs. He was entirely cured by Ayer's SARSAPARILLA. See certificate in Ayer's Almanac for 1883.

Among the best amateur contests probably which have occurred for many years, was the six-mile test of endurance which I witnessed on the Delaware, between Birch Brown of Philadelphia and Edward S. Ewen, amateur. Brown was much Ewen's superior in size and weight, but evidently not so in skill and endurance, as the Long Islander kept pace behind the Philadelphia to within one mile of Smith Island the terminus. Ewen winning by about a quarter of a mile's length; he lives at Bath, R. L., where I saw him some two years ago, indulging in his passion. Of the few who have excelled in the perilous performance of diving from great heights, I doubt if there are many at the present day who have outdone some of the feats performed by Robert Donaldson, having in the year 1880, jumped from the centre of High Bridge to the river below, a distance of 216 feet, although Sam Patch, the American diver, Sam Scott and Thomas Worthington, known as the star diver, all of whom met their deaths by means of these tremendous leaps, were good ones in their day. Sea bathing is the beat, owing to the greater specific gravity of salt water than fresh, the body being buoyant in it, as are all other substances. There is little that can be said, however, about this useful pastime which will go far toward teaching one the art of becoming expert, or to swim with ease, grace and confidence, as an ounce of practice is worth a pound of theory. It remains but for me to add, finally, that few sensations are more delightful, and the strength which one acquires, and which he was previously a strangler to, after frequent and discreet indulgence, is a sufficient proof of its many virtues."
"Will you kindly tell me which way the wind blows?" asked a Northern invalid to the landlord of a Florida hotel.
"Certainly, sir," replied the landlord stepping to the door, "the wind blows due North, air."
"Thank you."
A little later the landlord said to the bookkeeper:
"Have you made out Mr. Smith's bill yet?"
"No, sir."
Well just charge one dollar to his account for information about the direction of the wind."
