"I have run across some mighty big liars in my time," said the "nautical cop," taking his eyes from an old circus poster and turning them on a Philadelphia Press reporter, "but I think the fellow who was entitled to the whole bakery I met in 1855. He was an American, too—a New Bedford man, and an able-bodied seaman in the barkentine Nautilus, of which I was first mate. We were cruising off the Greenland coast after sperm whales. On the morning of July 4, Maple—that was his name—suddenly disappeared, just as we were about to lower a boat and start after a cow whale lying in the sun about a mile to loo'ard. "He had been seen an hour before drinking the captain's grog about the head of the companion way, and we thought he might be asleep somewhere about the vessel; but a thorough search failed to find him. We went after the whale, but she was too smart for us and got away, and when we reached the vessel again another search was made for Maple, but with the same result. When a week had passed without finding him, we came to the conclusion that the poor fellow had fallen overboard, and, being unable to swim, was drowned. "I shall never forget the morning of August 1, 1855, as long as I live. I was standing aft, looking over the rail, when suddenly I saw the biggest whale I ever saw in my life right in our wake, with its nose almost touching the rudder. In my anxiety to give an order to lower the boats I turned too quickly, caught my foot in a coil of rope, and the next instant was struggling in the waves. Nobody saw me go overboard, and I felt that I was lost, for the moment I struck the water the whale opened its cavernous jaws, and I was sucked in like a spar drawn into a whirlpool. "The sensation was a queer one going down the whale's throat. When I reached the capacious stomach, I struck a waterproof match, and you can judge of my astonishment when I saw Maple curled up in a corner, sound asleep, with a deck of cards in his hands. I awakened him, and he very coldly informed me that he had been in the whale's stomach since the Fourth of July; that he had met a Chinese pirate there who had attempted, during a friendly game of draw poker, to play five aces on him; and that, as a punishment, he had killed the heathen gambler and eaten him! "Now, I could stand a reasonable lie, but that was altogether beyond the bounds of possibility. The idea of a man first meeting another man in a whale's stomach, playing A Tale of Love." A couple of excursions east portico of the Chimney window of the Chimney a bean-pole looking close deep on his back burn-haired angel of 9 feet and chewing three quarts one. For a long time at the fountains and sea Then he tenderly queried "Hanner, isn't it it did? Yum," she answered "I could sit here for me! Don't believe I can More silence and sign her elbow in his hand! Hanner, I'm hungry! Didn't you bring me! Hangry for your lovers biscuits. Hanner, s'po' Well?" 'S'posen I knew a who would marry us! How much? Two dollars." Have you got the s'posen Hanner, do you do not got seventy-five cents, Harker boys and borrows! I'm afraid." Now, Hanner." Oh, I can't; you know like you." Hanner, hitch this S'posen I bought you c watermelons? S'posen great love, and conclude for some other girl We'd gently slip down corner of this stately shop of a Justice, and I'd have you." Oh, dear, but pa ww Hanner, know it—no one will know as silent as the grave unold man respect me for half a show and I'll make round like a caif with mar will fairly love them Come, Hanner, let's slice Oh, Gawge!" Hanner—Hanner! To the love, the mystery, gold watches and diamond dresses." Where? Why, next year, when Don't I own forty acres dote on you? Would around if I didn't love hoss in our country. And you really love W. H. Masser, M.D.D.S. D. R. Wilder, D.D.S. DENTISTS. "The sensation was a queer one going down the whale's throat. When I reached the capacious stomach, I struck a waterproof match, and you can judge of my astonishment when I saw Maple curled up in a corner, sound sleep, with a deck of cards in his hands. Now, I could stand a reasonable lie, but that was altogether beyond the bounds of possibility. The idea of a man first meeting another man in a whale's stomach, playing cards with him and then eating him. Why, it was so utterly absurd that I told Maple he ought to be a politician." But you have failed to explain how you escaped," said the reporter. That man was the smoothest liar I ever struck," said the "nautical cop." Crimes and Casualties. SAN FRANCISCO, May 31.—A man named Dietrich and his wife got into a quarrel today in which he shot her and then shot himself. She is likely to recover. He is not expected to live. PHILADELPHIA, May 30.—Late last night Joseph Fitzpatrick and his wife quarrellled in their bedroom. Their son James broke into the room and struck his father, who then killed his son with a sword. MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 31.—The Appeal's Batesville, Miss., special says: "A difficulty occurred on the street this morning between H. W. Thater, editor of the Batesville Blade, and Julius Porter, a young lawyer, which resulted in the killing of Porter. Thater was arrested, but was discharged at the primary trial, having acted in self-defense. The difficulty grew out of accusations made against Porter, which Thater refused to retract." SAN JOSE, Cal., May 31.—This afternoon at 4 o'clock, while Zariah Lundy was cutting hay in a lot adjoining his home in the eastern suburbs of the city, unknown to him, his six-year-old daughter May climbed the fence and hid in the high grass, intending to surprise him. The first father knew of her presence was her screams. Stopping his mower as quickly as possible he found her left leg cut in two above the ankle, and her right foot injured. Blowers, while hauling wood fell from the wagon in such a manner that one of the wheels passed over his neck, killing him instantly. "I wish to express my appreciation of the valuable qualities of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral as a cough remedy. While with Churchill's army, just before the battle of Vicksburg, I contracted a severe cold, which terminated in a dangerous cough. I found no relief till on our march we came to a country store, where, on asking for some remedy, I was urged to try Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. "I did so, and was rapidly cured. Since then I have kept the Pectoral constantly by me, for family use, and I have found it to be an invaluable remedy for throat and lung diseases." J. W. Whitley. Blowers, while hauling wood fell from the wagon in such a manner that one of the wheels passed over his neck, killing him instantly. Voudooism in Alabama. We have before us something of a curiosity in the shape of a voudooo or conjure bag. Negroes in this section, even in their most enlightened circles, have never gotten rid of that lowest order of superstition common to the race since the birth of their most ancient forefathers, which is a firm belief in and practice of what has been called voudooism. The little bag we have before us was picked up on Broad street, in front of the Selma furniture store, a few days since. It contains a rabbit's foot, a piece of dried coon root, a bulbous plant that grows spontaneously in Southern forests, also some other herbs and roots dug from the woods, and some small particles of parched tobacco. The rabbit's foot, perhaps, possesses more power of sorcery than any other instrument in use among the black magicians of the south. Numbers of negroes in the south carry a rabbit's foot in their pockets or concealed about their persons as constantly as the plow-boy carries his knife. There is not one negro out of every hundred that will allow another person white or black, to approach them with the enchanted foot. They will almost go into spasms of terror and will fight, as for dear life, rather than come in contact with a rabbit foot in the hand of another person. What there is about the foot of an ordinary rabbit, or more properly speaking, hare, that sways such a powerful influence for the negro juggler, is something we can't understand, but that it does is a settled fact. There is one old negro at labor for the city now who was arrested and tried for vagrancy several days since. He claims to be a voudooo doctor, and many negroes in town actually fear him as they would a rattle snake. Perhaps the bundle of trash before us is the property of this same old superstitious negro, and if so, according to the doctrine of voudooism, his magical powers are all lost.—Selma (Ala.) Times. When a man can walk 610 miles in less than six days, people can understand how women can go shopping six days in the week without complaining of feeling tired. The Mystic Venator's Alabam On the 7th day of the observance was ordered Israel, who feasted 7 days in tents. A couple of excursionists took seats on the east portico of the City Hall, directly under the window of the Chief of Police. He was a bean-pole looking chap of 23, with dust an inch deep on his back, and she was an au-burn-haired angel of 20, wearing a solid shoe and chewing three quids of gum rolled into one. For a long time they sat and looked at the fountains and sighed and were silent. Then he tenderly queried: "Hanner, isn't it dreamy?" "Yum." she answered. "I could sit here forever," he whispered. "I don't believe I could, I'd be hungry." More silence and sighs, and then he took her elbow in his hand and said: "Hanner, I'm hungry now." "Didn't you bring a biscuit along?" On the 7th day of the 7th month a holy observance was ordered to the children of Israel, who feasted 7 days, and remained 7 days in tents. The 7th year was directed to be a Sabbath of rest for all things; and at the end of 7 times 7 years commenced the grand jubilee; every 7th year the land lay fallow; every 7th year there was a grand release from all debts, and bondsmen were set free. From this might have originated the custom of binding young men to 7 years' apprenticeship, and of punishing incorrigible offenders by transportation for 7, twice 7, or three times 7 years. Anciently a child was not named before 7 days, not being accounted fully to have life before that periodical day; the teeth spring out in the 7th month, and are shed in the 7th year when infancy is changed into childhood. At thrice 7 years the faculties are developed, manhood commences and a man becomes legally competent to perform civil acts—at four times 7 he is in full possession of his strength—at five times 7 he is fit for the business of the world—at six times 7 he becomes grave and wise, or never—at seven times 7 he is in apogee, and from that time decays—at eight times 7 he is in his first climacteric or year of danier, and ten times 7, or three score years and ten, has by the prophet, been pronounced the natural period of human life. And we would add, the most constant weather cycle is in that of 7, or some multiple of this mythical number.
