A Texas man has invented a machine to wash dishes. The average Texas man will still keep his dog rather than buy a machine.
A Burlington mother has miraculously cured her young hopeful of smoking by the laying on of hands.
A poem has been written by Ella Wheeler entitled "You Kissed Me." It is not addressed to any one in particular, but Gen. Sherman is suspaged.
A young girl recently married wanted to show how smart she was so she made her own wedding cake, and ye gods, were at the guests sick next day.
A gentleman was giving a little Keokuk baby boy some peanuts the other day. The good mother said, "Now, what are you going to say to the gentleman?" With childish simplicity the little fellow looked up in the gentleman's face and replied "more."
The lectures of Joseph Cook suggest a story to the San Francisco Bulletin: "Sandy, what is the state of religion in your town?"
"Bad, sir very bad. There are no Christians except Davis and myself, and I have my doubts about Davis."
"Emotional insanity" is now a common plea of defendants in trials for murder. It means much the same as "justifiable wrath," or "served in right," but has a pleasant sound in the ears of the ordinary juryman.
An old railroad man says the middle car of a train and the middle of the car on the right hand side is the safest spot for the passenger. Railway companies ought to provide more than one of these favored spots on each train; the supply is altogether too light.
Some miners in the Lehigh Valley district are now working for sixty-five cents a day. At the end of the week they don't have much money to invest in opera tickets and editions de lauree. They must improve their minds by looking at the comet of 1812 and reading theatrical posters on the fence.

GIANT BAKING POWDER
THE ATTENTION OF HOUSEKEEPERS AND the public in general is called to the following facts:
The value of Baking Powder is determined by the amount of gas it contains and the freedom of the article from any injurious ingredients. The GIANT BAKING POWDER is absolutely pure, and contains about one-quarter more gas than any brand of Baking Powder in use on this Coast. Three cans of GIANT BAKING POWDER are equal to four cans of any other brand. Study economy and use none other. Your grocer will furnish you with a sample can free. Try it.
FACTS.
SAN FRANCISCO, JULY 13, 1883.
BOTHIN MANUFACTURING CO.
GENTLEMAN: The sample of GIANT BAKING POWDER you handed me, also samples of the following brands of Baking Powders purchased by me in open market, I have tested for total quantity of available gas, with results as follows:
GIANT 106 cubic inches per ounce avoirdupois.
ROYAL, 120 cubic inches.
NEW ENGLAND, 110 cubic inches.
PIONEER, 107 cubic inches.
GOLDEN GATE, 107 cubic inches.
DR. PRICES, 90 cubic inches.
Yours, respectfully,
THOMAS PRICE, Chemist.
SAN FRANCISCO Sept. 24, 1883.
H. E. BOTHIN, President Bothin Manufacturing Co.
DEAR SIR: After a careful and complete chemical analysis of a can of GIANT BAKING POWDER, purchased by us in open market, we find that it does not contain alum, acid phosphate, terra alba, or any injurious substances, but is a pure, healthful Cream Tartar Baking Powder, and as such can recommend it to consumers.

The Kansas City, Mo., Journal reports Col. Mahlen Chance of Ohio, who is now visiting that city, as saying of ex-President Hayes: "He inherited $200,000 or $300,000 from his uncle, Mr. Birchard, beside having saved considerable during his administration. He is a carful, prudent business man, and devotes the principal portion of his time to the management of the John F. Slater fund for the cause of education in the South. He is also interested in the promotion of tree planting on the highways, and is the patron of all historical and agricultural matters. The Methodists of Fremont are at present erecting a church at a cost of $18,000; Mr. Hayes contributes one-fourth of the sum, and will make good any amount which shall exceed this. He takes no part in politics, refuses to be interviewed, and attends strictly to his own business."
New York, F.b. 11.—Bonfort's Wine Circular says the importation of California wines during January, by Pacific Mail steamers and our sailing vessels, was 95,208 gallons. In 1883 there was received 87,036 gallons.
The first place of business erected by the New Haven, Conn., colonies, dating back to 1662, is said to be still standing and in active use.
SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., Feb. 20, 1882.—I use Ammen's Cough Syrup in my family. I recommend it—have sold some on my recommendation—still I should not have done so out of business or friendly consideration did I not believe in the medicine.

EVERYTHING.
There are 193,000 physicians in this country.
Nine of the New York city Aldermen are saloonkeepers.
Arizona has a population of 85,000, which has doubled in three years.
Oliver Ames' new residence in Boston is said to have cost $200,000.
In 1980 the English-speaking population of the globe will be 1,000,000,000.
An average of 450 persons per day patronize the Toronto, Canada, soup kitchen.
There are fifteen living Free Masons who were initiated over seventy years ago.
Milwaukee has more saloons in proportion to population than any other city in the country.
Sparta, Ga., has only 1,000 inhabitants, and yet two bar-rooms there pay $750 each for license.
Florida strawberries require plenty of sugar, but still have a strong money flavor.
Miss Theodocia Gray, aged ninety years, of Darien, Conn., is amusing herself by cutting her front teeth.
The police of Philadelphia report that 250 street lamps are broken daily in that city, mainly by boys.
The Detroit Free Press says that four-fifths of the female hired help in that city came from the Dominion.
Under Maine's laws the number of deer in the northern part of the State is increasing. So also the number of wolves.
Canyon City, Col., has the largest artesian well in the world. At the depth of 1,220 feet a stream was tapped which flows 400 gallons a minute.
The air of "Maryland, my Maryland," is the air of the old German "Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum," to which college students sing the "Lauriger Horatius."

Having a Competency.
I have a neighbor who is always so busy that he has no time to laugh; the whole business of his life is to get money, more money that he may still get more. He is still drudging, saying that Solomon says: "The diligent hand maketh rich." And it is true, indeed, but he considers not that it is in the power of riches to make a man happy, for it was wisely said by a man of great observation: "That there be as many miseries beyond riches as on this side of them." And yet, Heaven deliver us from pinching poverty and grant that, having a competency, we may be content and thankful.
Let us not repine, or so much as think the gifts of God unequally dealt, if we see another abound in riches when, as God knows, the cares that are the keys that keep those riches hang often so heavily at the rich man's girdle that they clog him with weary days and restless nights, even where others sleep quietly. We see but the outside of the rich man's happiness; few consider him to be like the silk worm, that, when she seems to play, is at the same time spinning her own bowels and consuming herself. And this many rich men do, loading themselves with corroding cares to keep what they have already got. Let us, therefore, be thankful for health and competence, and above all, for a quiet conscience.
As an invigorant Hostetter's Stomach Bitters has received the most positive endorsement from eminent physicians, and has long occupied a foremost rank among standard proprietary remedies. Its properties as an alternative of disordered conditions of the stomach, liver and bowels, and a preventive of malarial diseases are no less renowned, and have been accorded emphatic professional recommendation.
