Kleinigkeiten.
The name of Hermosa postoffice has been changed to "South Pasadena."
Insure against fire in the first-class companies for which Richard Melrose is agent. Policies written and delivered at once.
Dam the reservoir. That's what is going to be done forthwith. And yet the man who are going to do it are not specially profane.
At New River one day last week Mrs. Newton was attacked by a bull and sustained very serious injuries.
The Farmers' Ditch Company of Orange-thorpe have levied an assessment of $2 per share.
The San Diego ostriches are concealed from view in a closely boarded corral, and visitors are admitted only upon payment of fifty cents.
The semi-annual statement of the Bank of Anaheim, published to-day shows a very decided increase of business during the past six months. Mr. James reports that business is steadily improving.
When nobody wanted to buy land, everybody wanted to sell. A change has come over the spirit of their dream.
Prof. Hinton gives his farewell party this evening. He has secured the new Bryson Hall in Los Angeles, next to the Nadean Block, and will begin giving dancing lessons.
The entertainment for the benefit of St. Michael's church on Thursday evening was more successful than its managers anticipated. The hall was quite well filled, the supper (a very excellent one) was well patronized, and the exchequer of the church is greatly swelled as the result of the entertainment.
The following tableaux were presented: Elaine; Night and Morning; Burning of St. Agnes; The Magic Mirror; Taking the Veil; Crowning of the Fairy Queen; The Night Before the Execution of Mary Queen of Scots; The Execution; Fatima entering the Forbidden Chamber. These tableaux were without exception, exceedingly beautiful, and in the arrangement excellent taste was displayed. Mr. Nourse, a professional educator temporarily sojourning in town, contributed not a little to the enjoyment of the audience by reading several amusing pieces. Mrs. Jarley's Wax works, with which the entertainment concluded, was quite amusing.
The lady managers desire us to express their thanks to all the ladies and gentlemen who so kindly assisted them, and desire to specially mention the musicians, whose artistic playing was one of the main features of the entertainment.
It is not long since wiseacres turned up their nose when stock in the Anaheim Water Company was mentioned. Today these same people are breaking their necks in trying to get hold of some.
In an argument to prove that it is quite possible that the county may yet be blessed with an abundance of rain, J. W. Potts of Los Angeles says:
To show that our chances for rain are good, even if there is but little rain to the first of February, I have carefully examined a statement of the monthly rainfall in Sacramento (which is about the same as here) published in the Rural Press of January 12th, 1884, for thirty four years, and find that

Prof. Hinton gives his farewell party this evening. He has secured the new Bryson Hall in Los Angeles, next to the Nadean Block, and will begin giving dancing lessons therein next week.
Ex-Lieutenant-Governor Mansfield estimates the population of Los Angeles city at 30,000. We are free to admit that it will be some time before Anaheim "ketches up" with its sister city in the matter of population.
As every other county paper has an editorial prevaricator, we also have engaged one. The following is his first contribution: "The rainfall at Anaheim this season amounts to 7 inches. It is feared the crops will lodge." Isn't he a daisy?
The big vastness of Anaheim's reservoir may be imagined by considering that it covers nearly fifty acres or ground and the dam will be twenty feet in height.
A Chinaman employed by Mr. C. E. Leonard was found dead in his bed on Tuesday morning. Justice Gannon held an inquiry and the jury rendered a verdict that he died from natural causes, but that his death was hastened by excessive drinking.
Mr. Hinson, the well-known fruit commission merchant of San Francisco, was in town on Wednesday. He confirms the testimony heretofore given that matters agricultural and horticultural are in far better condition in this county than in any of the counties north of here.
In less than one year from today Anaheim will have the best water system in the State of California.
At Los Angeles on Friday of last week Francois Jvano and Mariana Villa were killed by a falling gravel bank, and Lenion Barthe had his leg broken at the same time. The three were laborers engaged in removing soil, and their careless method of excavating caused a cave with the fatal result reported.
Mr. Nicolas Kieter, a native of Belgium, who was injured by burns a few weeks ago, died on Tuesday, at the French Hospital. During his illness Mr. Edward Roth was very kind and useful to the deceased, who remembered him in his will, giving him his property, valued at about $5,000.—Herald.
In an argument to prove that it is quite possible that the county may yet be blessed with an abundance of rain, J. W. Potts of Los Angeles says:
To show that our chances for rain are good, even if there is but little rain to the first of February, I have carefully examined a statement of the monthly rainfall in Sacramento (which is about the same as here) published in the Rural Press of January 12th, 1884, for thirty four years, and find that thirteen years out. The thirty-four it rained more after the first of February than it did before than time, viz:
1890 before 1st of Feb. 650, after 4,940
1893 1894 5,235 14,700
1894 1895 5,480 14,220
1894 1895 4,617 5,822
1894 1895 10,643 11,712
1894 1895 4,176 7,139
1894 1895 8,176 8,478
1894 1895 7,269 7,269
1894 1895 3,659 4,820
1894 1895 12,712 13,737
1894 1895 5,335 10,967
1894 1895 7,268 19,478
1894 1895 7,063 8,617
So it will be seen that it rained nearly an average of four inches for each of the thirteen years referred to after the first of February more than it did before that time. On this basis, supposing we have no more rain this month (January), our chances are good for eight inches after that time, but four inches more than we have had would carry us through handsomely.
Annaheim has the biggest and best natural reservoir in Southern California. It will store 403,363,291 gallons of water. Other smaller reservoirs to be utilized as occasion requires will increase this amount fifty per cent.
The Annaheim correspondent of the Times says: "Already the good effects of the settlement of our water troubles are being felt by our people. During the past week a larger number of strangers have been seen on our streets than for a long time past, and our business houses have felt the change in affairs. Of course it will take a few weeks before the new consolidated company is in legal working order and the old companies dissolved," but the consolidation is practically accomplished, and with a unanimity of action heretofore unthought of. Land has already risen from ten dollars up an acre, and it will keep on rising until it will eventually reach the fancy figures of the better advertised localities."
Supervisors Levi and Moesser, accompanied by Road Overser Paty, inspected the road from Burruel Point to Anaheim on Thursday with a view to improving that thoroughfare. The road is in an execrable condition and as it is one which is extensively traveled there ought to be some way devised to make it better than it is. There ought also to be a bridge across the river, but the building of one now is out of the question, as the law will not permit the Supervisors to use money for that purpose.
In witness where our hands and seals A.D., 1884.
The above article and approved by A was made and carried by them in, and the papers the County Clerk as required by law.
A form of certified company was adopted

The scarcity of lausits cannot now be used against this section. We are at peace with all the world, and have fraternized among ourselves.
An orange 15 inches in circumference is likely to attract attention under any circumstances, but when it is the product of a tree planted two years ago it becomes especially noticeable. Such an orange from such a tree was plucked on Mr. Fromhein's place some days ago. He has another young tree on his place from which 500 oranges have been picked this season, and there are several hundred yet hanging to the limbs, all of large size.
Messrs. W. A. and B. A. Smith, the father and brother respectively of S. B. Smith of this place and A. G. Smith of Tustin, arrived here on Thursday from Connecticut. They will remain here for some time, and if we may judge from their expressions of astonishment at the climatic difference between Connecticut and California, it is more than probable that they will forsake the land of steady habits and become identified with this growing country.
If land within the irrigation district of the Anaheim Union Water Company was worth $75 per acre two weeks ago, it is worth $150 an acre to-day.
Dr. Bailey of Santa Ana was over here again this week on professional duty. The reputation he has gained of late years is certainly great and well may he feel proud of his large and successful practice. It is generally admitted that Dr. Bailey is one of the ablest surgeons and physicians of Southern California.
Prot. Hinton gives his farewell party tonight. Lottery dance.

This is the most prolific country in the world. Given plenty of water, and the earth yields with a prodigality surpassing belief. Anaheim has the best water right in the State.
Mr. E. A. Saxton has made a very effective design for a seal for the new water company. A reservoir encompassed on three sides by hills over which the rising sun is sending its rays; a ditch of water flowing from the reservoir down upon the valley orchards and vineyards; around the seal the words—"Anaheim Union Water Company, Los Angeles county, Cal. Incorporated January, 1884."
Vine growers can procure three interesting appendices to the report of the Chief Executive Viticultural Officer by writing to J. H. Wheeler, the Secretary of the Commission at San Francisco and enclosing six cents in stamps. The titles of the appendices are, "The Chaintre System of Pruning and Conducting the Vine," "Practical Manual of Pruning, as practiced near Bordeaux," "Different Methods of Grafting the Vine."
Attention is directed to the nursery advertisement of Mr. W. E. Sibley, published today. He is a reliable gentleman, and one of the most progressive nurserymen in the county.
Fishing in the big Anaheim reservoir is strictly prohibited. Only the Directors have that privilege—and the Secretary.
The contract for carrying the mail between Artesia and Norwalk has been awarded to John Gillespie for an annual compensation of $176.

THINGS ARE MOVING.
The New Water Company Formally Incorporated.
The gentlemen elected as a Board of Directors of the Anaheim Union Water Company met informally on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Dreyfus was called to the Chair, and Mr. Melrose acted as Secretary. The following articles of incorporation were read by Mr. Lynill:
Articles of Incorporation of the Anaheim Union Water Company.
Know all men by these presents, that we understaged have this day associated ourselves together for the purpose of incorporating under the laws of the State of California a corporation to be known by the corporate name of "The Anaheim Union Water Company."
And we hereby certify that the objects for which this corporation is formed are:
The supplying of water for hydraulic, irrigation and domestic use to the owners of or occupants of 12,000 acres of land situated in Los Angeles county and obtained within the following described limits:
The eastern boundary shall be the east line of the Shanklin tract, the northern boundary shall be the Cajon ditch and the north branch of said ditch extending westward along the base of the hills until it intersects the east section line of Section 32, T. 3 S., R. 10 W., San Bernardino Base and Meridian, at the N. E. corner of said section; thence south on section line one-half mile to Sec. corner; thence west on Sec. line one and one half miles to center of Sec. 31; thence south on Sec. line to intersection with S. P. R. R.; thence in a southeasterly direction along the line of said Railroad to the intersection with Sec. 8, T. 4 S., R. 10 W., S. B. E. corner;
Incorrect, But True.
Los Angeles Express.
Our fellow citizens of Anaheim and Santa Ana are to be congratulated on the sterling good sense which they have displayed in coming to an understanding in the matter of water. That the shareholders of the Anaheim Water Company were, practically, unanimous in their desire for consolidation is a very pleasing feature of the very important action they have taken. In the Santa Ana river there is, and, if it be properly stored and husbanded, always will be, a efficiency of water for the needs of both communities; and it is surely better to agree upon a common scheme for its distribution than to throw money away in litigation, a proceeding which may be likened to that of the two cats which reflented a monkey to divide between them a certain piece of cheese which belonged to them in common—in his efforts to be strictly impartial, by nibbling first from one of the pieces into which he divided it and then from the other, in order to make them of equal size, the monkey finally devoured the cheese of contention.
The Anaheim Gazette of Saturday last gives a glowing description of the public rejoicing which ensued upon the announcement of the vote, a torch light procession followed by a public meeting addressed by eloquent speakers, titly ended the happy day.
A unique feature of the occasion was that the Anaheim band played by telephone to people in Santa Ana, Downey and elsewhere along the line of telephonic communication. It is said that the new company will construct at once a double reservoir, the most extensive ever attempted south of San Francisco and an elaborate net-work of distributing ditches.
The Express and other city papers have not fully "caught on" to the true inwardness of the recent water settlement. The consolidation was between the two companies on the Anaheim side of the river, and the Santa Ana company did not figure in the matter at all. As civil wars have always been the most productive of bitter feeling, so the strife between factions of one community has dwaried our dispute with the Santa Ana company, and has done more to retard the development and growth of this section than any other cause. Having fraternized and come together upon a basis satisfactory to everybody, there is a genuine cause for rejoicing and no time in our history have...

In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 22d day of January, A. D., 1884.
The above articles having been examined and approved by A. Glassell Esq. a motion was made and carried unanimously that they be adopted. They were then signed and acknowledged by the gentlemen named therein, and the papers were ordered filed with the County Clerk and the Secretary of State, as required by law.
A form of certificate and seal for the new company was adopted, and the Secretary was instructed to procure a seal and all necessary books and blanks.
An advertisement was ordered published, giving notice that each stockholder of the Anaheim Company and the North Anaheim Canal Company would be called upon by some member of the Board and be required to give a description of the land upon which they wished to locate their stock. It will greatly facilitate matters if the stockholders will prepare a memoranda describing exactly the land they wish to irrigate, and have it ready for delivery when called upon. Each stockholder is interested in having the new company organized as speedily as possible, and it is in their power to expedite matters in the way suggested.
The meeting then adjourned until Monday, February 4th, 1884, at 2 o'clock P.M. at which time it is expected that the certificates, conveyances and all necessary papers will be ready for signing and delivery; but should any delay occur, due notice of postponement will be given by notice in the Gazette of February 24. It is proposed that the directors of all four companies—the Anaheim, North Anaheim, Cajon and Anaheim Union—meet on the day mentioned, and all the formalities of transfer will be accomplished then and there.
It may be stated that all the legal preliminaries and proceedings are being conducted under the instruction and direction of the attorneys, Glassell, Smith & Patton, and Theo. Lynill.
The Directors went en masse on Wednesday and viewed the reservoir. Not one of the party had ever fully appreciated this glorious work of nature until the close inspection of Wednesday, and very decided expressions of satisfaction were indulged in. The determination was expressed to proceed with all possible diligence to the construction of the dam and the utilization of the reservoir.
