Artificial Nourishment.
Some of our foreign exchanges relate a novel method for administering nourishment to invalids and persons with weak digestion which, it is alleged, has been practiced in Paris with great success. Diseases and enfeebled health commonly owe their origin to the imperfect assimilation of food. When the digestive functions are impaired the body is insufficiently nourished, and is unable to resist the encroachments of disease. For the maintenance of health and for restoration in sickness it is of the first importance that the food be not only of the most nourishing kind, but that it be administered in a form easy of digestion and assimilation. In a paper recently communicated to the Medical Hospital Association of Paris by Dr. Debove, he describes a form of alimentation which has attracted much attention. His system is to apply nourishment in form of powder instead of in bulk.
NOTES ABOUT ANIMALS.
An eight-legged calf is the product of Bourbon county, Ky.
From 250 to 300 cats are destroyed weekly in Philadelphia by the agent of the Women's Branch of the City Refuge for Lost and Suffering Animals.
Of the four homing pigeons which made the distance from Washington to Bridgeport, Conn., the other day, the average speed of the two that arrived first was 1,071 yards a minute.
That rats are very fond of sunflower seeds is demonstrated daily in Congress Spring Park, Saratoga, where they have recently been seen climbing the stalks to get at the now ripe and oily seed.
A mocking bird belonging to Robt. Potee, the gambler who committed suicide in Kansas City, showed great grief upon seeing the body. It refused to eat, and when Potee's body was taken away the bird died.
Henry H. Gavitt, of Bridgeport, Conn., has a decided curiosity in the shape of a dog without forelegs. There are no shoulders or joints where the legs should be; little projecting tufts of hair are all that is noticeable.
A wild pig found in the woods near Lytle Station, Ky., was, after considerable difficulty, so trained by his finder that he would follow his master as the historic lamb followed Mary. Whenever his master sits down to eat the pig will lie down by his side, and eat and drink whatever his trainer hands him.
Indians in Brazil use ants to dress wounds, causing them to bite the edges together and then cutting off the head; the jaws will not relax, but hold the wound together until healed. They were formerly used as a cruel instrument of torture by South African tribes, who tied their victim to a tree, smeared his body with grease and placed ants' nest at his feet.
An aged owl, the pet of a household on Middle street, Portsmouth, passed away yesterday and was buried at night with distinguished honors, slow music and the recitation of appropriate lines from the "Burial of Sir John Moore." Above the grave of Colorado Crime.
DZNVER (Col.), Oct. 13.-A.M. Harrison, residing on this city, shot his sixteen-year-old himself, both dying alone. The cause assigned is jealousy since in domestic affairs on the mother-in-law. The couple wished Shawnee, Kansas, last Married been in Denver a month.

Progress of Sorghum Sugar Manufacture.
The new Kansas Sugar Refining Company, located at Hutchinson, Kan., turned out its first batch of sugar on the 12th of September. This company has invested $125,000 in works here, and proposes making its headquarters at Hutchinson, while they will establish branch mills over the State and ship the product here for refining. The results of to-day settle all controversy about the possibility of making sugar from sorghum cane. The run to-day was a bright grade, and crystallized perfectly without the sorghum taste. The mill will be run from this on at a full capacity, which is over one hundred barrels per day of syrup. This season's product will aggregate 9,000 barrels of sugar and 7,000 barrels of syrup. All grades of white sugar will be made, but the machinery for granulating is not up yet. To run this mammoth establishment requires two hundred men day and night. The Cleveland Leader says the works at Hutchinson and at Sterling are both operated on the same principle, and both have met with the same successful results. Hutchinson and Sterling will soon be able to supply Kansas with her sugar.
The First Umbrella.
The First Umbrella.
Scottish American
The umbrella was first used in the streets of Glasgow by Dr. Jamieson in 1782, on his return from Paris. When he commenced unfurling it crowds of people followed him in amazement at the spectacle. About 1789 an attempt was made to manufacture umbrellas by Mr. John Gardner, father of the present Mr. Gardner, optician, Buchannan street. "Senex" had in his hands the first umbrella that ever was made in Glasgow. It was, indeed, a very clumsy article. The cloth was heavy oil or waxed glazed, lined, and the ribs were formed of Indian cane, such as, shortly before this time, ladies were accustomed to use as hoops to extend their petticoats. The handle was massy and strong, and altogether it was a load to carry.
As regards the bearings of lemon trees, I would state that I tried the lemon trunk and found that they did not do anything, so concluded to let one, a Sicily lemon, run up as it would, and I now have as handsome a tree loaded with fruit as can be seen anywhere. In fact, the tree has grown so much that we can sit under its delightful branches, as it will measure twenty-five feet in length and thirty-five feet through the branches, and only two years and a half since I allowed it to grow at will. This, of course, convinces me that the lemon does the best when left to grow at will.—A. H. Frey in Palatka, Fla., Journal.
A Big World.
Yes—so it is; and you know that one of the biggest things in this big world is the laboratory where Dr. Swayne & Son prepare and put up their invaluable medicines, Philadelphia, Pa. Swayne's Pills have been in the market for years and already thousands have proved their curative powers. They are purely vegetable, do not gripe or produce nausea, and no household is complete without them. Only 25 cta., or 5 boxes for $1. Try them.
Salt Lake, Oct. 13.—Elder Wm. Palmer, President of the Mormon mission in Indiana, Michigan and Minnesota, arrived in Salt Lake to day, bringing with him thirty converts to the Church. He says the feeling in those States toward Mormon elders was very bitter, especially in Indiana, where Elders Marks and Davis were tarred and feathered. No elder had labored in that State during the past season without being subjected to insults and outrages and in many instances Mormons were pelted with rotten eggs and tobacco quids while preaching. He thinks the feeling against the Mormons in the East is worse than ever before.
New York, October 12.—The Herald's London special says: The Queen has issued a private memorandum enjoining the occupants of certain royal palaces to the correction and reformation of their manners. Recent events have brought to our knowledge the fact that in one of her palaces gambling is regularly going on to an almost incredible extent, and enormous sums are lost and won, and ardent players are wont to continue their amusements well into the mornings of Sundays and other days directed to be kept holy.
Colorado Crimes.
DENVER (Col.), Oct. 13.—This afternoon, A. M. Harrison, residing on ninth street in this city, shot his sixteen-year-old wife and then himself, both dying almost instantly. The cause assigned is jealousy and interference in domestic affairs on the port of his mother-in-law. The couple were married in Shawnee, Kansas, last March, and have been in Denver a month.
DENVER (Col.), Oct. 13.—The Tribune's Grand Junction, Colorado, special says: One year ago the wife of H. A. Herrick, a well-do ranchman in this county, left him. Herrick afterwards obtained a divorce and married Margaret Thompson. Mrs. Herrick, number one, returned a short time since, and meeting Herrick and wife, shot and instantly killed his second wife. She was admitted to bail, and commenced proceedings for the recovery of some of Herrick's property. This afternoon, while the sheriff with Mrs. Herrick was at the ranch looking up cattle, Herrick shot and killed Mrs. Herrick, and then gave himself up to the sheriff. The excitement was intense.
Mamje Gordon of Trenton, N. J., aged 14 years, was reprimanded at school for circulating improper ballads, and on being told that her parents would be informed, drowned herself.
Millions Giren Away.
Millions of bottles of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughes and Colds, have been given away as trial Bottles of the large size. This enormous outlay would be insufficient to the proprietors, were it not for the rare merits possessed by this wonderful medicine. Call at Higgins' Drug Store and get a trial bottle free, and try for yourself, it never fails to cure.

No, it never amounted to an acute pain, but conduced to be a dull, weary ache in the small of my neck," writes Mr. James Thomas, of No. 59 Madison Memphis. Teen. "This was an old experience, and life became dull music. I was tired all over, with pain in the lower limbs, and a habit of awake of night. Recently I tried one of NSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLASTERS and was ideally relieved within twenty four hours. It may have been Providence that did the work, but I gave credit to Benson's porous plaster." Mr. Thomas' arterial idea does him credit, but Providence works by agent, and among them Benson's plaster kicks first as an external remedy. It acts quickly in relief and healing, and renders life better worth liv-Price 25 cents. Look in the middle of the poster for the word CAPCINE. Ask your physician out it.

ADAMS, N. Y., Jan. 30, 1882
Da. B. J KENDALL & Co., Ganta—Having used a good deal of your Kendall's Spavin Cure with great success, I thought I would let you know what it has come for me. Two years ago I had as speedy a colt as was ever raised in Jefferson County. When I was breaking him, he kicked over the cross bar and got fast and tore one of his hind legs all to pice a. I employed the best farriers, but they all said he was spoiled. He had a very large thorough-pin, and I used two bottles of your Kendall's Spavin Cure, and it took the bunch entirely off, and he sold afterwards for $1,800 (dollars). I have used it for bone spines and wind galls, and it has always cured completely and left the leg smooth.
It is a splendid medicine for rheumatism. I have recommended it to a good many, and they all say it does the work. I was in Witherington & Kneeland's drug store in Adams, the other day and saw a very fine picture you sent them. I tried to buy it, but could not; they said if I would write to you that you would send me one. I wish you would, and I will do you all the goal I can.
Very respectfully,
E. B. LYMAN.
