To make a perfect filter, which should have the double action of arresting the most suspended matter and removing the matters held in solution; and the whole to cost but little and capable of being made by any conserve, has been the object of my study for many months, and, after many experiments and testing various substances in many combinations, I suggest the following plan, which I find gives very perfect results, and will not a couple of dollars: Purchase a common galvanized iron pail, which costs fifty cents. Take it to a tin-shop and have a hole cut in the center of the bottom about the size of a five-cent piece, and direct them to soldier ar and it a piece of tin about three quarters of an inch deep, to form a spout to direct the flow of water downward in a uniform direction. Obtain two quarts of small stones at a store where material for rooting is solitary; after a good washing, place about two inches of those at bottom of pail to found a drain. On this place a partition of house hair cloth or flannel fabric to size of pail. On this place a layer of animal charcoal, fold at the wholesale chemists as bonedbread at about ten cents a pound; select this about the size of gunpowder grates, and not in powder. This layer should be three or four inches. A second partition having been placed, add forces from sand, as clean and as fine as possible. These within reach of glassmakers should purchase this sand there, as it is only with that quality of sand that the best results can be obtained. On this place another partition, and add more fine stones or shaggy say no two or three. RIPE FRUIT TRADE WITH THE EAST. The present is not a very good year to judge of the Ripe Fruit trade of California. The hot weather last February and again last June was very impure. As a result it has been an off year with fruit raiders. The quantity has been restricted, and the quality has been in many cases below the standard. Yet, owing to great superiority, the deterioration has not left us without a fair supply in fair condition. We have been sending forward consignments of ripe fruit every month this year, something we deem not all ways done, and something which very few States reach ever do. The principal consignments have been shipped from San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles. The opening of the southern Trucks is traditional through New York; this year's ship has made Los Angeles a prominent shipping point for fruit. I found that the yellowish color of when water, which is very difficult to remove, was entirely necessary to water passed through my filters. To test this, water must be filled up before white percolation begins. In this manner the color of Creaton waters is generally visible in contrast with the wader stain. The filter is also free from particles which are trapped on the paper. The time needed for its application to some filters on the paper may be reduced in limited sense if no resistance should be caused on a filter and none of which could count be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned. I have often noticed wool clothing used in filters. The best authorities, however, claim that this material, when properly acts newly in a mechanical manner or a strainer, and that charged collisions from animal matter alone appears to prevent the power of removing matters held in solution in water. The Mormon Church. SALT LAKE AT T. OCTOBER 1814 - The attendance at the Mormon Conference today was much larger than yesterday, July 6,000 persons being in the Tabernacle. The audience was addressed by Apolles Bards, Carrington, Lynan and Cameron all of whom impressed their hearers on the necessity of living up to their religion, going into The Mormon Church. Apache Canon presented statistics of the church showing a membership in Utah of 137,294; number of families, 23,000; births in past six months, 1200 males and 1500 females; number of children under eight years, 57,000; number of marriages in six months, 339; new members, 23,040; deaths, 751. The church organization embraces 12 apostles and 58 patriarchs, 3,885 "seventies," 3,153 high priests, 1,000 elders, 1,500 bishops and 4,400 deacons. Arizona reports a membership of 2,261. Idaho, not reported, has double that of Arizona. Eighty-one missionaries were appointed to go on missions to Europe and the United States. Eighteen of this number were set for missions in the Southern States, where the church is meeting considerable success in increasing its membership. The Southern converts are being colonized in Colorado mainly. A special from Eugene City, Oregon, notes the marriage of the widow of the late Hulius Miller and the mother of Joaquin Miller, the poet of the Sierras. She is over 60 years of age and her latest love has just passed his majority. The affair created quite a sensation in Lane county, where she has a son residing. He opposed the match, but the festive widow tersely remarked that she was the one being married and expressed herself as highly delighted with her young love. Okmulgee, October 6. The sandflower has long been grown for its oil seeds in Russia and India, and the cultivation has been more recently taken up in Germany and Italy. The plant grows readily to root swells, has prefers light, rich, calcareous soil, unshaded by trees. In Russia the seed is drilled into holes 18 inches apart, and the plants are counted out to 30 inches apart in the rows. Thus giving about 11,000 plants in an acre. The quantity of seed required for an acre is four to six pounds, and the sowing takes place in September-October, the crop being ready to harvest in February. In England it is recommended to be planted 6 inches apart and 1 inch deep, and to be earched up wheat-root-high, requiring no sulfonate attention. The yield of seed is increased by topping the plants, and the most fertilizer is old mortar. Each plant produces about 1,000 seeds, snailly on the main heads. Exports capitalized in France gave a return of 1,178 pounds of seed, yielding 15 per cent of oil (275 pounds) and 80 per cent of cake. From an upper limit the product varies considerably according to soil, climate and cultivation, and the average may be roundly stated at 50 hectols of seed from an acre, and 1 gallon of oil from 1 bushel of seed. The percentage gained to see fruits from 16 to 28; and list of these corrals from 41 to 55. The Indian cultivation is confined to the neighbourhood of Calcutta and Colombo, in Vanuatu. This plant is most extensively grown in Kochis and Paldia, and the district of Humboldt in Vanuatu; the production of seeds is more attained at 3,000 pounds of 30 pounds, from an area... of 89,900 square yards. An Inane Mother's Crate Driven October 18, The details of a horse rib trapped at Harrods, Mason on the Mayan National Railway have just been revealed. On a train near Lampeter, from a well near Mason, named Arizona Valley, several consisted of a wife and two children, the youngest two. The wife had been subject to spells of motherhood and often set off marks of temporary insanity. As such, she was brought to the little ones last Wednesday during the chapel of her husband, the woman was attached with a rare mineral deficiency, dressing which she graded a large butterfly and at once began the work of decoration. The oldest child, a sweet girl of ten, was the first to fall before the wild mother's heavy blows. The victim's head was almost severed from her body. With demonical madness, so peculiar to the insane in quick succession, she slew the other children, hacking and stabbing them in a most barbarous and sickening manner. Suddenly, taking a parting look at the dead, she plunged the knife into her own breast. The next morning the parish priest arrived and, after the soliding and wailing of those present, the same funeral rites were performed. Extraordinary Discovery It is reported from Halifax that the wool of a vessel has just been discovered, which cultivation, and the average may be roundly staged at 50 hectares of seed from an acre, and I gallon oil from 1 bushel of seed from 16 to 28 and out of this oil from 41 to 60. The lankana seed is expressed on the spot, and the oil is largely employed for adulterating olive oil. The armed oil is considered equal to olive oil for table use. The chief industrial applications of the oil are for wood dressing, lighting, and canning and wine making for the last mentioned purpose to most oils. It is pale yellow to color, thicker than bempseed oil, with 926 specific gravity at 15 deg., does slowly become tart or ordinary temperatures, and solubility at -16 deg. C. Drug Reporter I. O. G. T. A State Convention will be called for placing in a nomination a full State ticket. President Shemond in a speech attacked the wine trade to California as evil also W. Extraordinary Discovery It is reported from Halifax that the wreck of a vessel has just been discovered, which has been missing for more than ten years. The wreck, too, was found in an extraordinary manner. Some months ago the English steamer Cedar Grove was wrecked near Torbay on the Canadian coast, several lives being lost. A diver who was carrying on his operations at the Cedar Grove on the 18th ult. was surprised to come across another vessel, which was lying close to the Cedar Grove, but in deep water. The name New Dominion could be distinctly read on the stern of the stranger. It appeared that the brig 'New Dominion sailed from Cow Bay, Cape Breton, in December 1872, with a cargo of coal for Yarmouth, U.S. Since then nothing had been heard of the vessel or her crew until the discovery made by the diver. It is assumed that the New Dominion strack upon the same rock as the Cedar Grove, afterwards sliding off into deep water, and taking down with her all on board. A Double Actesian Well. Salma has the most wonderful artesian well in the world. Two separate streams of water of entirely different properties flow from this well. This effect is produced by the insertion of a two inch pipe within a four inch tube. The larger pipe descends four hundred feet; the water has no mineral qualities, and is very cold. The inner pipe descends seven hundred feet; the water is strongly impregnated with sulphur and iron, and compared with the temperature of the twin stream, is quite warm.—Selma (A.U.) Times. It is said that the largest grapevine in the United States grows on the promises of Mr. Madden in Pike county, Ga. It is eighteen years old, is thirty-four inches in circumference at its base, is a quarter of a mile long, and yields five wagon loads of grapes. Men often mistake notoriety for fame, but they never mistake Kalney-Wort for any quick medicine. Kalney-Wort is universally recognized as a standard remedy for all diseases of the liver, bowels and kidneys. The Wisconsin State Medical Society during its recent annual session, passed a resolution virtually declaring consumption to be an infectious disease, and urging the necessity of the proper isolation and disinfection of those suffering from it. The San Josquin county Supervisors have passed an ordinance exempting merchants and trademen (except dealers in liquors) from paying licenses.
