Editor Gazette:—I shall abide by your sentence "mistaken zeal" upon my, at least honest desire not to discourage but to contribute to the prosperity of California grape growing by indicating to growers who wish for progress, that we can do better. A few years will show practically the advanced results of those who timely follow good advice. Let planters of Mission and Malvoisie stock get their vines in good vegetation; they do grow good plants to graft on. At the same time do as others do, and see what reason the partisans of superior acclimatizations have to advise reform. It is not a fact that in 1878 I identified the Anaheim Mission vine as Grenache. I saw great similarity of the Mission with the Mollar grape, but for some years have now been persuaded that without a full study of the composition of a vine it is absurd to identify it, and I have voted never again to believe that it is possible to be absolutely certain of the identity of a vine or grape since I saw that four samples of one variety of grape grown in four different California localities, made people doubt that there was any outward similarity among them. That Mollar grape is very ordinary, and I have not advised a friend, for whom I procured the higher kinds of grapes growing in the Spanish district where the former is at home, to go to the trouble of acclimating it. As to the practical test for some years of grape culture on the Rhine. An English correspondent who has visited the vineyards on the Rhine gives the Rural New Yorker some account of the Rhianish methods, etc., which may be new to some of our readers. We quote as follows: At the Glendermain School of Horticulture there is practiced a very simple method of propagating grapes from single buds. Thoroughly ripened cands are cut in the fall, and packed in sand until January or February. They are then brought to the propagating house and cut for pitting—a single bud in each pot. The piece is prepared with a slant cut through the cane, beginning half an inch from the bud on each side and cutting toward it. This gives a blunt, wedge-shaped form, the bud being on the longest side. Small thumb pots are used, which are filled half with sandy soil, and then to the top with clean sand. In this the cutting is planted in a slanting position, so that the bud is just on the surface. The pots are then plunged to the top in the sand of the propagating bunches, and a steady bottom heat of 25 degrees, Reammer (89° Fahr.) is given them. They are watered freely, and soon take root, though in this there is great irregularity, some varieties rooting much quicker than others. As soon as the roots snow against the pot they are transplanted in a light sandy soil, and taken to the hot-house, where they are kept close to the glass to insure the most perfect sunlight. As the subsequent repottings occur, the young vines are gradually acclimated to a cooler atmosphere and acustomed to a stronger soil, and are finally planted in nursery rows and receive careful field culture. The vineyards of the Rhine present a striking picture. The high hills on which they are grown are so steep that it is necessary to terrace them by means of stone walls, to prevent the surface soil from being washed to the bottom. These walls traverse the hillsides in almost all directions, each land-owner building his wall for best preservation of his own vineyard. This network of wall, as seen from the opposite side of the river, forms an agreeable part of the landscape, the irregularly shaped fields, rarely more than an acre or two in extent, looking like the meaches in a tangled web. Opposite Bingen is such a picture; terrace above terrace the vineyards rise more than 500 feet high, while above them, crowning the summit of the hill, is the great monument which Germany is building to commemorate her victory over the Third Napoleon. One cannot but be struck with the economy which these grape growers show in the use of the land. The vines are planted closely together—not more than eighteen inches apart in the rows, which are about three feet from each other. The cultivation is done entirely by hand. All the manure for the upper fields is carried from the narrow roadways in baskets, and in passing down the Rhine one sees many places where Buildings that Resist Earthquakes The volcanic eruptions in Java, the earthquake in Ischia, and our own Western tornadoes have probably caused much more destruction of life and property than they would have caused if buildings had been specially adapted to resist them. In Japan, where shocks of earthquake are frequent, it is not usual to dig foundations for any building, no matter how large or important it may be. Rocks slightly rounded at the top are placed where the four corners of the house are to be. The corner posts, also rounded at the end, rest on these. The timbers are all pinned together, not nailed, so as to allow of considerable movement without coming apart. In the central portion of the building the timbers are particularly heavy, and act as ballast. In high towers there are huge beams swung from the roof and reaching to within a foot of the ground, which prevent the building from being overturned either by earthquake or storm. The oldest building in Japan, the treasury at Nara, is built in this manner, without the swinging beam, but with a very heavy ballast in the framework of the centre of the floor. A well-known artist is the inventor of a painting hut which is constructed in part on the same principle. It rests on stones at the corners, the timbers are keyed together, and it carries a heavy ballast under the floor. It is, however, in addition, secured to the ground by ropes and anchors. This hut will outride a gale in perfect safety. Probably it would not withstand the force of a tornado; but it would whirl through the air without falling to pieces, and would reach the ground again right side up. A larger, heavier structure of the same sort might not be budged even by a tornado. The amounts paid into the United States Treasury as conscience money since 1861 aggregate $186,459.01. A Treasury officer says that the payments are made in every conceivable way—by means of registered letters with fictitious names, by various forms of commercial paper, and through the private Read What an Editor Says. Mr. Robt. S. Ammen:—Enclosed you will find your proposal for advertising accepted. I have all the advertisements the Bulletin can well carry, but recently we had an eni Probably it would not withstand the force of a tornado; but it would whirl through the air without falling to pieces, and would reach the ground again right side up. A larger, heavier structure of the same sort might not be budged even by a tornado. The amounts paid into the United States Treasury as conscience money since 1861 aggregate $186,459.01. A Treasury officer says that the payments are made in every conceivable way—by means of registered letters with fictitious names, by various forms of commercial paper, and through the priests and pastors of the conscience-stricken persons. They almost invariably take great pains to conceal their identity, though a few boldly write the circumstances of their becoming indebted to the Government. Not long ago a letter accompanied by money was received at the department in which the sender wrote that the money was due the Government as duty on goods that were passed with a lot of others by a customs officer who was bribed by an unscrupulous member of the party. The largest revenue in any year since 1861 through contributions to the conscience fund was in 1868, when the amount was $29,155.11. In 1872 the amount was $23,302.77; in 1878, $12,011.33; in 1882, only $7,888.40; and it is estimated that this year it will be still less. This decrease may indicate that there is less opportunity or inclination to steal from the Government, or that men are becoming less sensitive to the prickings of conscience. Sunshine and Shadow. Sunshine seems to follow in the wake of some people, while gloom and sorrow enshrubs the pathway of others. And why is it? The former make use of Swayne's Pills which act upon the system in a manner to keep it healthy; while the latter suffer with Byzantine Liver Complaint, Dropsy, Billions and Sick Headache, Jaundice, Fewers, Constipation, Female Irregularities, etc. If they prefer to suffer rather than pay 25 cents for a box of Swayne's Pills, which is warranted to cure all the above illies, why—let them live to suffer. Read What an Editor Says. Mr. Robt. S. Ammen:—Enclosed you will find your proposal for advertising accepted. I have all the advertisements the Bulletin can well carry, but recently we had an epidemic of chest and throat diseases, and your medicine (Ammen's Cough Syrup) was used in my family with good results, though my faith in all sorts of so-called patent medicines is little indeed. That it did good in this case, however, I believe, and for that reason will advertise it. If you will take the trouble to glance over the columns of the Bulletin you will discover they are clean from all nostrums and quack remedies, though applications reach me almost every week for space. You're respectfully, C. MULHOLLAND, Greenville, Cal. Editor Bulletin. Persons visiting the shore will notice that almost always the waves come on shore in sets; that is, three or four of ordinary size and then a large one, then perhaps two or three more of these sets and then a still larger wave. It has passed into an adage from which comparisons are drawn that every seventh wave is larger than the rest. This is true sometimes, but not always. Waves are vibrations of the water caused by storms of greater or less magnitude. These storms are constantly occurring all over the vast ocean, and each one sends out an overwidening circle of waves, just as a stone dropped into a mill pond will send out its ripples. If there were but one agitating cause there would be a regular succession of waves on the beach, of equal height, and coming at regular intervals, gradually subsiding after the storm had passed. But at different points on the ocean, storms of varying magnitude are constantly raging and ON THE who has visited vines the Rarol the Rhannish now to come follows: Horticulture side method of buds. One storm may send out waves ten seconds apart, and another fifteen, and it is plain that every thirty seconds the waves of each storm will strike the shore together. Then, perhaps another with a wave interval of twenty-five seconds will be added, and every two and one-half minutes the three will come together and make a large breaker. This is the explanation of the "seventh wave" theory. He that is discontented in one place will seldom be happy in another." People are constantly changing their homes from East to West and from North to South or vice versa, in search of a healthy State. If they would learn to be contented, and to use the celebrated Kidney-Wort when sick, they would be much better off. The whole system can be kept in a healthy state by this simple but effectual remedy. SWAYNES UNFATALING REMEDY SUCH AS DISEASES TESTER, ITCH SORES, PIMPLES, CRYMPELAS, MOTORIZERS. "No, it never amounted to an acute pain, but continued to be a dull, weary ache in the small of my back," writes Mr. James Thomas, of No. 39 Madison street, Memphis, Tennessee. "This was an old experience, and life became dull music. I was tired all over, with pain in the lower limbs, and a habit of lying awake of nights. Recently I tried one of BENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLASTERS and was decidedly relieved within twenty-four hours. It may have been Providence that did the work, but I give the credit to Benson's porous plaster." Mr. Thomas reverential idea does him credit, but Providence works a plaster and among them Benson's plaster ranks first as an external remedy. It acts quickly in relief and healing, and renders life better worth living. Price 25 cents. Look in the middle of the plaster for the word CAPCINE. Ask your physician about it.
