The following report by Mr. W. Malcolm, M. P., dated Gawler, July 10, on the new industry of ostrich farming, is included in the annual report of the Adelaide South Australia Chamber of Manufactures: "Two years ago last May, I began this industry at Gawler. Last year, when your committee did me the pleasure of visiting the farm, our stock, of all ages, consisted of thirty-three birds. We then had five hens about laying, and quite expected to rear 80 to 100 chicks during the year. Unfortunately, one fine hen, after laying six eggs, got killed by the wretched curs called greyhounds, kept in such numbers all over the colony (and mostly unregistered). Another got disabled, so that we only had the eggs of three hens, and from these we have reared some sixty three birds. This season, at the Gawler farm, we expect to have twenty-five hens laying, and expect to rear at least 400 birds during the season. During the year we have imported one shipment of ostriches, and out of 100 put on board at Cape Town, we landed 94. Some few died after landing; the others are doing splendidly. After the passing of the of the Ostrich Bill we selected some 3,800 acres near Port Augusta (saltbush country.) Upon this land we have now some forty-six THE GAZETTE'S PICTURE GALLERY. HENRY VILLARD. AN ARIZONA CLOUD-BURST Wool Growers. On Sunday afternoon one of those curious phenomena of nature occurred about thirty miles southwest of Tucson, and from the description given by eye witnesses it was the largest cloud-burst ever known in this country. From Judge R. D. Ferguson the following account was gathered. On Sunday he was returning from a trip to the southern part of the county. At 10 o'clock he put up Brown's station to await dinner and spend the neat of the day. The sky all day was cloudless, except a thunder storm that was observed traveling the summits of the Santa Catalinas and disappearing over the Rimous in the northeast. Otherwise, not a cloud or vapor of any kind was to be seen. The sun was shining in all its vigor, and as he passed to the west his strength and glory seemed undiminished. At three o'clock Judge Ferguson resumed his journey towards Tucson. He had come about five miles when his attention was attracted by a roaring and crackling toward the west and looking up he saw a river of water, as big as the Santa Cruz when it runs through Warner mill tail race, coming to ward him. Telling his driver to halt, they stepped on top of a little snail, and watched Many of the gentlemen present expressed themselves as being earnestly HENRY VILLARD. OF THE NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY. It is the property in a county has been, for example, assessed at the rate of 60 cents on the dollar of a actual cash value, the action of the Board increases the rate enough to make it 100 cents. It will be seen that the increase is therefore not a per cent on the values fixed by the assessors, but a much larger amount. Alameda, 29; Contra Costa, 29; Kurn, 10. The phylloxera has done damage to French viticulture which will not be repaired in the present generation, but a soil has now been found which has the double merit of raising good wine and of defying the ravages of this insect. The wet sandy ground around the months of the Rhone has for some years been cultivated by vine growers, and excellent results have been obtained. A. M. Fanceon was the first to call attention to the fact that the phylloxera thrives best in a dry, rocky soil, and he advised the irrigation of infected vineyards by small canals. A. M. Bayle then thought of trying some wet, sandy ground at Angus Mortes, which he planted with French vines in 1873, and the experiment succeeded so well that he extended his operations, buying more land, until in 1878, he owned several large and The Girl with the Miraculous Wounds. The women in the harems are not permitted either to see or to touch a strange man,and when they are ill there is nobody of skill to minister to their wants. Hence the necessity for a woman physician. Mrs. Joshee says that contrary to conjecture, she does not become unclean and lose her high caste by crossing the sea. Arrangements are to be made to enable her to cook her own food, and thus escape the penalty of losing caste by eating from dishes that have been touched by persons who are not of her caste. She is 18 years of age. SALT LAKE September 14. The Mormon Church is in receipt of information from one of their settlements in Mariopa county,A.T., stating that smallpox has broken out in a malignant form among the settlers. "The best advice may come too late." Said a sufferer from Kidney troubles,"when asked to try Kidney.Wort,"I'll try it but it will be my last dose." The man got well and is now recommending the remedy to all sufflagers. In this case good advice came just in time to save the man. The Germans of Iowa are starting a movement to oppose the woman's suffrage agitation. They say that if women obtained the right to vote they would be under the influence of the clergy, and would take an extreme position in relation to beer and wine drinking and the observance of Sunday. It would be impossible to reason with them in favor of moderate and reasonable temperance and Sunday laws, and their votes would establish total prohibition and blue laws as bad as those formerly enforced in Connecticut.Various German journals affect to regard this threatened evil as of a serious and imminent character, and call upon the Germans as a body to take a pronounced position in opposition to it.
