1 lb of brown sugar, 1 oz. hops, 1 oz. of ginger (brushed) 1 gall of water, boil the hopes and ginger for twenty five minutes, add the sugar and boil ten minutes longer, then strain and bottle while hot; it will be ready for drinking when cold. It should be kept in a cool place. Dried horshound may be used instead of hopes.
1 lb of lump sugar, 1 oz. citric acid powder, one lemon cut in slices, 1 quart of boiling water, stir altogether and bottle when cold. The addition of a little essence of cochineal will impart to it a nice rose color. One or two teaspoonsful, according to taste, to be put into a tumblerful of water. This will keep longer than a fortnight.
The following makes a very refreshing drink, and is almost identical with the THE LION AND THE JACKDAW.
In the summer of 1519 there was an intellectual tournament at Leipzig, before Duke George of Saxony. Luther was the champion on one side, John Eck, of Ingelstadt, on the other. We have a description of Luther by a friend who saw him on this occasion; he was of middle height, so lean from stitty and anxiety that his bones could be counted. He had vast knowledge, command of scripture, fair acquaintance with Greek and Hebrew; his manner was good, his speech pregnant with matter, in a way he was lovely, pleasant and smiling. On his feet he stood remarkably firm, body bent rather back than forward, the face thrown up, and the eyes flashing like a horse. Eck was less favorably drawn, with a face like a butcher's and a voice like a town offerer; a hesitation in speech which prooked a play upon his name, as being like the cock, eck, eck of a jacklaw. Eck called Luther a disciple of John Hues, and Luther defended Hues. Hues has appealed to a general connexion. Eck reminded him that he could not Covenant but plunder Hues, and so forced him to say that meaning might make mistakes. Prayal supremacy was most fought over. Del Castro found it: Could it be proved from the New Testament? Duke George thought Eck had the best of the encounter. Leipzig Catholic gossip had a story that Luther's mother had confessed that Martin's father had been the devil. But Luther remained the favorite of Germany. His teeth circulated in hundreds of thousands. Ulrich von Hatten and Franz von Sicking offered him an asylum if he had to leave the electrate. He published an address to the German nation, denouncing the papacy as an insurrection, which rang like the blast of a trumpet. He sent a copy to the elector who replied with a basket of game. Eck meanwhile, who thought the victory had been his, was dispatched by Duke George to Rome to urge the Pope to action. Charles had signified his own tendered attitude by ordering Luther's writings to be burned in the Low countries. Beneath encouragement on the 16th of
for drinking when cold. It should be kept in a cool place. Dried horehound may be used instead of hope.
1 lb. of lump sugar, 1 oz. citric acid powder, one lemon cut in slices, 1 quart of boiling water, star altogether and bottle when cold. The addition of a little essence of cochineal will impart to it a nice rose color. One or two tablespoonsful, according to taste, to be put into a tumblerful of water. This will keep longer than a fortnight.
The following makes a very refreshing drink, and is almost identical with the above, but cheaper. 2 lbs. of light brown sugar, or more, according to taste, 1 oz. of citric acid, powdered, three gallons of cold water, mix altogether, melt a little common cochineal in hot water and add sufficient to color it.
But here is the most refreshing and strengthening drink. Drink old perilla and is made as follows. Put into a large pan 1 lb. of fine oatmeal, from 6 to 7 ozs. of white sugar, half a lemon cut in small pieces. Mix with a little warm water; then pour a gallon of boiling water into it; stir and boil altogether thoroughly, and use when cold. The lemon may be omitted, or raspberry vinegar, or any other flavoring may be used instead. More oatmeal may be used if preferred and meals are scanty.
1 oz. of collar and an oz. of sugar boiled in two quarts of water and cooled, is a very thirst-quenching drink; so is it tea, but neither of these is supporting as the oatmeal drunk.
Boiling water poured on a few classes of lemon with a little sugar, makes a refreshing drink. Battermilk should be used far more than it is by the batter making farmers. It is wholesome, cooling and nutritious.
CHIPS.
"Is that dog mad?" he asked the boy, as the animal dashed by. "I reckon he is," replied the boy. "I just see a butcher take a piece o meat away from him and kick him six feet into the air."
Hartford insurance clerks took to guessing how many dollar bells were required to weigh as much as a $20 good pie. The low guess was 350 and the highest 1,000, while the real number was thirty-four.
The man who missed the train on account of being detained at home by some needed repairs on his pantaloons, mournfully suggests that it is all folly to say: "It is never too late to mend."
A millionaire banker in Paris once invited Chopin to dinner. It was barely over when the host showed him the piano and urged him to play something. "Mais, Moustieur le filaron," replied Chopin, "I have eaten so little."
In a discussion between two German physicians on the difference between the effects of whisky and beer, one of the contestants thus summed up the case: "Whisky makes the drinker kill others; beer makes the drinker kill himself."

A millionaire banker in Paris once invited Chopin to dinner. It was barely over when the host showed him the piano and urged him to play something. "Mais, Monsieur le baron," replied Chopin, "I have eaten so little."
In a discussion between two German physicians on the difference between the effects of whisky and beer, one of the contestants thus summoned up the case: "Whisky makes the drinker kill others; beer makes the drinker kill himself."
Charles G. Leland says that one of the bitterest curses which he heard in Egypt was: "May God make you wear a chimney pot hat." The Mohammedan sees in the birth of this article a hindrance to touching the forehead to the ground in prayer.
A street car conductor carelessly carried his bell punch home and allowed his children to play with it. The next day the company informed him that he was 9,900,929 farces short. He has offered to leave the children in pawn until he makes up the money.
Thirty-seven thousand one hundred and thirty-five women of the United Kingdom signed a petition to Parliament against the bill legalizing marriage with a deceased wife's sister. Now we know how many marriageable ladies there are in the United Kingdom who do not happen to be the sisters of deceased wives.
Love Sick.
A love sick swain in describing a kiss, says it is a draught that passes through the system like a bucket of water through a basket of eggs—but when you feel drowsy, stupid, lazy and your head aches and your liver don't seem to do its duty and you are costive and occasionally you have biliousness, you need a dose or two of Swayne's Pills—and remember they will put your system in apple pie order before you are aware of it. All druggists keep them at 25 cents per box or 5 boxes for $1.00. Try them.
A General Stampede.

It Seems to Satisfy
A family want, and I wonder how we ever got along without Parker's Ginger Tonic. It cured me of nervous prostration, and I have used it since for all sorts of complaints in our family.

Allcock's Porous Plaster
CURE WHERE OTHER PLASTERS FAIL EVEN TO RELIEVE.
Take no other or you will be disappointed. Insist on having ALL COCK'S.
PHILA., 30S NORTH THIRD ST., February 1, 1883.
I have been using Allcock's Porous Plasters for a number of years and always with marked benefit. I have been much troubled with Muscular Rheumatism; have been treated by five of our best physicians without receiving any relief whatever. I then used Allcock's Plaster on the parts affected and I can assure you the pain has almost entirely left me. I can recommend them to every one as the best plaster made. I have tried other kinds but found them worthless.
Weak Kidneys Cured.
CONTOCOOK, N. H., March 3, 1880.
I have been greatly troubled with Rheumatism and Weak Kidneys. I was advised to try Allcock's Porous Plasters (had used two other kinds of so called Porous Plasters, which did me no good), but one of yours has worked like a charm, giving me complete relief, and I have not been troubled with Rheumatism and Kidney Complaint since using them, and I consider myself cured.

ABRAMS, N. Y., Jan 30, 1882.
Dr. B. J. KENDALL A Co., Gulsa. Having used a great deal of your Kendall's Spain Cure with great success I thought I would let you know what it has done for me. Five years ago I had as speedy a coat as we ever raised in Jefferson County. When I was breaking things he asked me to cross bar and got fast and turbulent so his legs all threw a splash. I complained the best farmers but they all said he was swollen. He had a very large through pin, and I went to bottles of your Kendall's Spain Cure, and it took the branch entirely off, and he sold afterwards for $100 dollars. I have seen it for bone spining and swelling and it has always cured com, letely and hit me so smooth.
It is splendid medicine for rheumatism. I have recommended it to a good many, and then all say it does the work. I was in Witherington & Kneeland's drug store in Adams, the other day and saw a very fit restraint you sent them. I tried to buy it, but could not; they said if I would write to you that you would send me one. I wish you would, and I will do you all the good I win.
Very respectfully,
E. S. Lyman.
