Brief communication on current topics are respectfully solicited from all parts of the country. THE TOWERS OF SILENCE The Parses will not, like the Hindos, burn their dead, for fire is too pure to be polluted by the touch of death. They will not, like the rest of mankind, bury in the ground, for earth is the mother of mankind, and they will not detile it by placing a corpse in its bosom. So, with neither cremation nor burial, what are they to do with the remains of their dead? On Malabar hill, the highest ground in the suburbs of Borday, surrounded by a lofty wall, and carefully guarded, is the Parsee cemetery or mortuary. Leaving the city we climbed the hill by a winding road leading through a charming grove of palms, and past beautiful bungees and villas, with an enchanting view of the city, island and sea behind us. At length we reached the abode of death. Over the great gateway in large letters we read, "None but Parses can enter here." For 200 years no Europeans had ever set foot within that enclosure. But a few years since the Prince of Wales unsealed the entrance, and now by proper influence travelers can obtain a pass. Thus we were privileged to enter the strange place. Entering the mysterious enclosure, on our right were the temples where the dead are brought to be discharged. THE SPOOPENDYKES. They Retire to the Country and Experiment with a Sailboat. "My dear, exclaimed Mr. Spoopendyke, bouncing into his wine room and interrupting that he lay in the parsey feminine enjoyment of unpacking for the summer. 'My dear there is no use trying to get along in the country without a sailboat, and I have bought a nice one.' Come along, and I show you how it works." "Ain't that nice?" giggled Mrs. Spoopendyke, who stood in mortal terror of the water, and was afraid of anything shaped like a boat. "Are you going to sail it on the pond? "At first I thought I'd sail it down cellar, growled Mr. Spoopendyke, 'but the landlord was afraid I might upset the milk; then I thought I'd try the garret, but there was too much wind up there; so I believe I'll stick to the river. Hurry up, now, and I'll show you the biggest boat not thirteen counties. "It it is as big as that it must have cost a good deal," murmured Mrs. Spoopendyke, somewhat reassured by the size of the boat. "I am very glad you got a large boat, though of course, the expense." "What if ye think I've been buying?" demanded Mr. Spoopendyke, with a flushed face; "got some kind of a notion that I've invested my wealth in a salt marsh with telegraph poles for masts, haven tye? Think I've been laying out money in a town site, don't ye? Weil, I haven't and I haven't been buying a rural district with a roader in it. It's a boat, I tell ye—a sail boat—and it won't come up here to make a formal call; so if you're going to see it, you want to go where it is. Coming? and Mr. Spoopendyke pegged off with his hat pulled down over his ears and the expression of a veteran tar on his visage. "Yes, dear," replied Mrs. Spoopendyke, fluttering after him. "Say, dear, I'll stand on the shore and watch you sail the thing." "You won't do anything of the kind," retorted Mr. Spoopendyke. "I bought the boat for your pleasure as much as mine, and you're going to sail in it. When I want you to stand on the shore and watch anything, I'll hire a man to drown himself. Now look at that boat. Isn't she a daisy? See how she sets on the water." "What are all these clothes lines hanging down from that stick for?" asked Mrs. Spoopendyke, surveying the yacht critically. "To play Copenhagen with," roared Mr. Spoopendyke, who was not at all anxious to be examined on the technical points of his new acquisition. "You take hold of those ropes, and I slap your hands, and then we kiss. See into now! Does the art of navigation begin to appeal to your understanding? Now, you got in and I'll make sail, and Mr. Spoopendyke handed his wife into the cockpit and began to tug away at his halfboards." "Why didn't you have a sail made when the boat was built?" inquired Mrs. Spoopendyke, by way of encouraging her husband's pleasant conversation. "The man was sick," snarled Mr. grove of palms, and past beautiful bungalows and villas, with an enchanting view of the city, island and sea behind us. Entering the mysterious enclosure, on our right were the temples where the dead are brought to be disposed and amounted with oil. Passing there we followed our guide up a grand pathway until we were stopped by another sign on which we read the warning notice "Stop here." We were within fifty yards of the tower now in use. Looking around we counted five great, round, stone towers known as "Towers of Silence." These circular structures are built of large white stones, and are perfectly plain on the outside. They vary in diameter from thirty to sixty feet, and are from twenty-five to thirty feet high. The oblast is 200 years old, and is an good repair. They cost about $100,000 apiece. Each tower has an iron door in the side, from which a flight of steps on the inside leads to the top. On the top are three circles of grooves or open stone receptacles for the dead, the outer one for men, the middle one for women and the inner one for children. In the center of the tower is a deep well reaching from the top to below the bottom. Around the outer edge of the top is a stone parapet, which gives greater seclusion to the dead. At the gate of the cemetery the funeral processions are met by the priests, who take the remains first to the temple then to the tower. The bodies of the dead are placed in the stone grooves on the top of the tower and left, without a particle of clothing, to be devoured by the great flocks of hungry vultures and other carnivorous birds, which sit perched on the towers and trees waiting for a feast. The moment the priests leave the remains the gluttonous birds swoop down upon their victim, screaming and quarreling as they tear it to pieces. Within an hour every particle of flesh is torn from the skeleton, and the Parsee inferment is complete. The naked bones are left to dry and bleach in the sun and wind for a few days, then they are carefully gathered up and thrown into the deep well in the center of the tower. We entered the cemetery about nine o'clock in the morning. Already three bodies had been placed in the tower, and half a hundred greedy cultures had gorged themselves with human flesh, and were sitting stupid and satiated, hazily waiting for another ghastly meal. The Parses defend this mode of disposing of the dead on sanitary grounds, especially in large cities, and look with disgust on other customs. But give us the Bible method of burial, and the grave for our departed, with the dear old formula, "Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust." Following our Savior into the tomb we have the glad hope of a resurge down from that stick for? asked Mrs. Spoopendyke, surveying the yacht critically. "To play Copenhagen with," roared Mr. Spoopendyke, who was not at all anxious to be examined on the technical points of his new acquisition. "You take hold of those ropes, and I slap your hands, and then kiss. See into now! Does the art of navigation begin to appeal to your understanding? Now, you get in and I'll make sail, and Mr. Spoopendyke handed his wife into the cookpit and began to tug away at his hallards." "Why didn't you have a sail made when the boat was built?" insured Mrs. Spoopendyke, by way of encouraging her husband's lateness with pleasant conversation. "Because the man was sick," snarled Mr. Spoopendyke, glancing at the head of the must to see what was wrong. "Come up here, will ye?" he grunted, as he grabbed the halbaris again. "There, did gast ye!" I knew I'd fetch ye!" and he walked att to examine the trim of his mainsail. "How does that set? "It seems to be a little full in the back breadth," commented Mrs. Spoopendyke, holding on to the combing with both hands. "If you cut a gore near that top stick it would be straighter." "I suppose so," muttered Mr. Spoopendyke, giving another hail at his peak hallards. "If I put a bustle on it, I imagine it would take the wrinkles out. Now I'll get up that job, and mind, don't you touch anything." Mr. Spoopendyke set his jib and pushed off. As his sail filled, the boat heeled over, to the manifest consternation of Mrs. Spoopendyke. "What makes the thing tip so?" she asked, scrambling up to windward, and grasping Mr. Spoopendyke by the collar. "Let down the centre board!" yelled Mr. Spoopendyke, suddenly remembering the instructions he had received when he bought the boat. "Let go that centre-board, quick." "I haven't got it!" squirmed Mrs. Spoopendyke. "I haven’t seen it! We must have left it ashore! Oh my!" she last exclamation was addressed to a half hunts trot weight of water stopping over the lee combing. "Haul away on that job sheet!" roared Mr. Spoopendyke, who found he was going ashore on the other bank of the river. "Pull her in as quick as ye can! Let go of that!" he continued, as he saw his wife enticing convulsively at the peak hallard cleat. "Let go the measly thing, will ye, and haul the jib sheet." "Is this it?" gasped Mrs. Spoopendyke, casting the threat hallard loose; "for this?" and she let go the peak hallard, dropping the boom on Mr. Spoopendyke's head and burying him under the mantail. "Perhaps this is what he means," she solidified and let it go by the run. "Now we are sailing better, clear. It hadn't been too me we would have tipped over." "That's it," yelled Mr. Spoopendyke, struggling out from under the canvas. "That's navigation! You struck it from the shoulder first clip! All you want now is a quick of tobacco and a hatch to your breeches to be a Cunard steamer! Got through? Anything else you want to do to this measly boat? If you had a compass in your ear and a deckload of units you'd only need a Custom-House inspector and a Hell Gate pilot to be a floating lunatic asylum!" And Mr. Spoopendyke hailed a passing row-boat and was towed ashore ignominiously. "I don't care," muttered Mrs. Spoopendyke, as she scrambled up the dock, and followed her lord to the hotel. "I don't care. I may not know as much about a boat as he does, but if it hadn't been forgive we would have been drowned like the dogs in August. Another time we go sailing we'll bring the boat to our room and wrap the jib sheet I have always thought well of the cooking schools, but I saw recently the notes taken down by a young lady of fashion, who had just come from a cooking lesson, and I don't know now what to think. The young lady saw a friend at the school who had just appeared in an elegant new Spring costume, and her notes ran about like this; "A fine cake—one pound and a half of flour, four ruffles across the front, one cupful of milk cut bias, whites of two eggs with kilt plaiting, butter the dish with bugle trimming, bake in a moderate waist until the oven is finished with the overskirt." Silver Spoons. It is not to be expected that every man was born with a "silver spoon in his mouth," but it is expected that every sensible man this side of kingdom come will purchase a box of Swayne's Pills—composed of valuable concentrated juices of plants, warranted to cure the great variety of diseases which begin in derangement of the stomach, liver and bowels. Try them once and you will always use them. Purely vegetable. A physiognomist says it's the mouth that tells. "Fools take to themselves the respect given to their office." But Kidney-Wort commands respect for its own solid merits, tested, tried and found not wanting in any essential principle required for the cure of dyspepsia, piles, malaria and all diseases of the kidneys, bowels and liver. Prepared in dry and liquid form. Colonel John H. George, the big New Hampshire barrister, tells a good story on himself, according to Judge Johnson. Meeting an old farmer recently whom he had known in his youth, the old fellow congratulated the Colonel on his youthful appearance and the surprising way in which he held his own. "How is it you've managed to keep so fresh and good-looking all these years?" quoth he. "Well," said George. "I'll tell you. I've always drank new rum and voted the Democratic ticket." "Oh, yes," said the old man, "I see how it is; one pizen neutralizes the other." Free of Charge.
