PACIFIC COAST NEWS.
The village of Macville, San Joaquin county, was destroyed by fire, only one building being left standing. Loss $20,000.
Henry Nierling was shot and killed by his divorced wife, Mary J. Nierling, on Saturday last on Willow Creek.
The Northern Pacific Railroad has been malleted in $20,000 damages in an action brought by an employee named Marvin who had both legs cut off.
Archie McMillan was killed in Sacramento by the falling of the pavilion which was being erected. The jury found that he himself was to blame, because he loosened a guy rope without orders.
John Ahern, a San Francisco hackman, was killed by a flagstaff which fell upon him from the roof of a building. It was being taken down by some carpenters, who lost control of it.
The jury in the case of Miller, for the murder of Dr. Glenn, the big Coinsa county rancher, were discharged, having failed to agree. They stood 9 for conviction of murder in the first court and 2 for conviction of murder in the second court.
Captain Burton tells us how the Arabs dislike to hear a person whistle, called by them el sifr. Some maintain that the whistler's mouth is not to be purified for forty days, while according to the explanations of others, Satan touching a man's body cause him to produce what they consider an offensive sound. The natives of the Tonga Islands, Polynesia, hold it to be wrong to whistle, as this act is thought to be disrespectful to God. In Ireland, the villagers have the same objection to whistling, and so far do they carry their superstitious dread of it that "if one swings about him a stick, whip, wand, or aught that makes a whistling sound, he ares from him the Holy Ghost;" while other Icelanders who consider themselves free from superstitions cautiously give the advice: "Do it not; for who knoweth what is in the air?" However eccentric these phases of superstition may appear to us, yet it must not be forgotten that very similar notions prevail as the present day in this country. A correspondent of "Notes and Queries," for instance relates how one day, after attempting vain to get his dog to obey orders to come into the house, his wife tried to coax it by whistling when she was suddenly interrupted by a servant, a Roman Catholic, who exclaimed in the most irritous accents: "If you please, ma'am, don't whistle—every time a woman whistles the heart of the Blessed Virgin blesser!" In some districts of North Germany the villagers say that if one whistles in the evening it makes the angels weep. Popular Science.
How it was Done.
The late Admiral Bailey, who was dined at the Astor House after the battle of New Orleans, explained that battle as follows: "Mr. President and Gesslemen! Hem—thank ye. And then, after a long pause, 'Well, I suppose you want to hear about that New Orleans affair?' 'Yes! yes!' exposed through the hall. 'Well, did ye see this was the way of it,' resumed the orator, hitching up his trousers. 'We were laying down the river below the forts, and Farragut he signaled us to go in' and take lien. Being as we were already have short, it didn't take much time to get under way, so that wasn't as much of a job as you seem to think; and then the engineers they run...
John Ahern, a San Francisco hackman, was killed by a flagstaff which fell upon him from the roof of a building. It was being taken down by some carpenters, who lost control of it.
The jury in the case of Miller, for the murder of Dr. Glenn, the big Cousin county rancher, were discharged, having failed to agree. They stood 9 for conviction of murder in the first degree and 3 for murder in the second degree.
Theresa Cramer, aged 7 years, was burned to death at Nicolaus Sutter county, by the explosion of a can of werosine. It is supposed that she was in the act of poisoning the oil on the fire in the kitchen store when the explosion occurred. She was alone in the house at the time, and her father, who was outside, heart the explosion and ran towards the house, meeting his child running towards him, a mass of flames. She died soon after the accident occurred.
A Napa officer who served divorce papers on the wrong woman as she was trying doughnuts in the kitchen received a lot of the red hot cakes full in the face, which gave his nose and cheeks a "burning Moscow" complication. It proved that the complaint, which was for "cruelty, aggravated scolding and being a common vixen," was intended for her brother's wife. So she apologized for her excitement but intimated that the other woman was really a holy terror and that he had better get a bomb proof suit before he called on her. The frightened official needed the caution by placing the summons in a sealed envelope, handling it to the women with a temper and departing before she was able to grasp either the contents of the legal document or any available kitchen utensils.
In a sketch of the Home of the Inheritance in San Francisco, the Chronicle says: In the years from 1860 to 1882 inclusive, the patients treated were respectively 402, 343, 211, 169, 174, 155, 235, 241, 279, 142, 230, 264, 363, 396, 401, 449, 715, 840, 661, 922, 909, 1012 and 987. From August, 1859 to December, 1882 inclusive, there were 10,896 patients treated. In 1882 the San Francisco Home, out of the appalling total of 987 patients, lost only two, and one of them was in articulos mortis when admitted. The question has often been asked as to how many of the discharged patients refrain from drink. Of those under 40 years of age fully 60 per cent.; of those over 50 years not more than 20 per cent.; of females a very small percent — this being partly because of the emotional feminine nature urging compliance with the impulse of the moment, and partly because of less resolve will power. The fact remains, however, that there is nothing that will absolutely destroy the appetite for liquor. One can restore the patient to health, treatment can take all the alcohol out of his Orleans, explained that battle as follows: "Mr. President and Gentlemen. Hem thank ye. And then, after a long pause: 'Well, I suppose you want to hear about that New Orleans affair.' 'Vest yes' opened through the hall. 'Well, dye see,' this was the way of it; resumed the orator, hitching up his trousers. 'We were laying down the river below the forts, and Farra-gut he he signaled us to go in and take ten. Being as we were already have short, it didn't take much time to get under way so that wasn't much of a pilgrim you seem to think; and then the engineers they run the ships so all we had to do was to blaze away when we got up to the forts, and take ten, according to orders. That's just all there was about it,' and the concise narrator, feeling that he had accomplished everything demanded of him, sat down in the midst of thunders of applause.
Sanctification is a genuine and gracious process and it never reaches completeness in this life. This should make us tolerant and charitable toward the infirmities of our Master. Yet it should never excuse our own wilful adherence to words or practices, or traits of character which disgrace our religion and mar our influence. In building a character for eternity, we should regard its impression on our fellow-men; we are as much bound to driment it as we are to make the structure solid and enduring. An attractive Christian is the one that hits the most nearly that golden mean between plant laxities on the one hand, and severe or sanctimonious harshness on the other hand. He is strict, but not censorous. He is sound, and yet sweet and mellow as one who dwells much in the sunshine of Christ's countenance. He never incurs contempt by compromising with wrong; nor does he provoke others to dislike him by his doing right in a very harsh, or hateful, or bigoted fashion. Rex T. L. Coyler.
SCRANEON, PA., July 2 — Among the convicts taken to Philadelphia today was a lad named Charles Wescott, convicted at Lackawanna of larceny. He is one of two sons of D.E.Wescott, who with his wife, created a sensation by cruelty towards their sons. Charles and Willie. The boys seemed to have a mamma for stealing. To break them of the habit Mrs. Wescott took Willie, knelt by a red hot stove and placing his bare hands upon it prayed for him, asking him to unite with her in prayer. The boy begged pitiously for mercy, yelling so loud from the pain of the burns that the neighbors were startled. Charles was tortured the same way by both father and mother. Still the boys continued to steal. On another occasion Charles was compelled to stand upon the head of a barrel three hours. The jury acquitted the Wescott's of cruelty to their children.

in articulo mortis when admitted. The question has often been asked as to how many of the discharged patients refrain from drink. Of those under 40 years of age fully 60 per cent.; of those over 50 years not more than 20 per cent; of females a very small per cent.—this being partly because of the emotional nature urging compliance with the impulse of the moment, and partly because of less resolute will power. The fact remains, however, that there is nothing that will absolutely destroy the appetite for liquor. One can restore the patient to health, treatment can take all the alcohol out of his system and make of him almost a new person, and, as has been said, in the great majority of the cases of patients under 40 years of age, the cure is permanent. But then that cure is predicated in a great measure upon the strength of the will power of the convalescents themselves to resist temptation.
The worry which the postal carriers of Chicago had over the possibility that they and all the others of their kind in the large cities of the Union would have to don knee-breeches, appears to have been premature, and a Washington special says that Acting Postmaster-General Hatton declares there is no foundation for the story, that such a step could not be taken by any postmaster without first consulting the Postmaster-General, and that so far no such request has been made.

Professor Fisher, of Yale College, thinks that athletic sports has done more good than harm to college students. Dr. McCosh, of Princeton College, takes the opposite view of the question.

Yes, it will do very well to talk about such things, but you cannot learn an Englishman to say "horse" without discarding the letter "h"—but you can learn by experience that Swayne's Pills beat everything for the cure of Liver Complaint, Biliousness, Dyspepsia, Fever, Sick Headache, Jaundice, Dropy, Constipation, Epilepsy, and Female Irregularities. "Neglect old friends for the sake of new, and lose both." But remember that Kidney-Wort is a friend you cannot afford to neglect. Plasters may relieve, but they can't cure that lame back, for the kidneys are the trouble and you want a remedy to act directly on their secretions, to purify and restore their healthy condition. Kidney-Wort has that specific action.

THE NEW PATENT DUST-PROOF
Stem Winding Open Face Case
MANUFACTURED BY THE American Watch Co. WALTHAM, MASS.
This case is formed in one solid piece without plant or water opening in front of it, thus avoiding the twisting and loosening greater strength and durability.
These Watches are all operative. The bezel, into which an extra strong crystal is fitted with an especially prepared waterproof cement, is attached to the case by winding the room and thus forms an air tight position with the case, which is proof against fire and moisture.
The real solution is steamship carriers, lumbermen and others who travel poorly exposed and who have to make frequent trips to the watch, these quantities are of the utmost importance.
