The History of Coke. The history of the discovery of coke and the development of the traffic has never been written. Authentic information of the first use of coke in this country places it in 1817, when it was employed by Col. Isaac Meason, one of the earliest founders of Western Pennsylvania, in refining iron at the Pau-rock, or Upper Middletown mill, in this county, a few miles from the Youghiogheny river. In 1818 the use of coke was attempted by blast furnaces, but it had to be a andoned because the blast was too light, being only five pounds to the square inch. Even then the value of coke as a furnace fuel was fully appreciated, but the enjoyment of its advantages was prevented by inability to increase the blast. In 1835 William Firnestone manufactured good gray-forge iron at the Mary Ann furnace, in Fulton County, with coke produced from Broad Top coal. In the same year F. H. Oliphant, of Fairchance furnace, near Uniontown, exhibited at the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, samples of iron made from blue lump ore. MUSEUM OF INFORMATION. The Maid of Orleans was burned at the stake at Roxen, France, May 30, 1431. There are 22 counties in Indiana, 88 in Ohio, 102 in Illinois, 99 in Iowa, and 161 in Texas. The population of the world is 1,438,145,300 divided among the continents; Europe, 312,398,480; Asia, 31,000,000; Africa, 205,219,500; Australia and Polynesia, 4,411,300; America, 86,116,000. The most talented, daring, independent and savage chief in this country was Red Eagle of the Muscogee or Creek tribe, who planned the awful massacre of Fort Nimma, and fought Gen. Jackson until his Indian warriors were reduced to a mere handful. This extraordinary man known among the whites as Wetherford, was a half-breed of the Se ten race of Macgiveray. The mingling of the white and Indian blood made him superior to his race, and one of the most formidable men of his times. The reports for the past ten year show the following to have been the annual crops in bishels since 1870, so far as regards wheat, corn and oats: The first road in England sighted up by lamps is that which runs parallel with Hyde Park. William III lived at Kennington, then a pretty village far away in the fields, and large numbers of the artocracy lived there, too. Many people were constantly going and coming across the park, which lay between the Kingly residence and the metropolis, and robberies became so frequent in the dark that the King ordered the road to be lighted with 300 lamps, and the effect was described in a paper of the day as very grand and inconceivably magnificent. Odd derivations: The word "pamphlet" is derived from the name of a Greek authoress, Pamphylia, who compiled a history of the world into thirty-five little books. "Punch and Judy" is a contraction from Pontius and Judas. It is a relic of an old "miracle play," in which the actors were Pontius Pilate. gheny river. In 1835 William Firstone manufactured good grayforge iron at the Mary Ann furnace, in Huntington county, with coke produced from Broad Top coal. In the same year F. H. Oliphant, of Fairchance furnace, near Uniontown, exhibited at the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, samples of iron made from blue lump ore melted with coke. In 1840 the Great Western Iron Works, at Brady's Head, built four coke furnaces. In 1841 coke was made on the banks of the Youghiogheny river and shipped in boats to Cincinnati. A gentleman who is well informed in all the details of the coke business says that Lind Dudley, an English iron manufacturer of the sixteenth century, is entitled to the discovery of coke. He used it for the same purpose to which it is applied now, smelting. The manufacture of coke in the Connellsville region did not rise to the dignity of a business until toward the close of the decade of 1850, when it was carried on principally at Davison's station, on the Youghiogheny river, six miles below Conneffisville, by the Cochrane, who are still in the business, and most of whom it has brought great riches.—Philadelphia Press. Skilled engineers are said to be wanted on the railroads; but there’s skilled brakemen enough on all of them. A “NATURALIST” is defined as one whose business it is to catch gutters included. It is proposed to introduce the growing of tobacco in Ireland. Whittler’s First Published Poem. The possession of the manuscript of the first poem when Mr. Whittler ever published leads the Portland (Mr.) Transcript to recall the young poet’s sensation when he first saw his production in print. He was working one day with his uncle repairing a stone fence when the postman in passing passed him a copy of the journal to which many weeks before he had sent his poem. Trennblyng young Whittier opened the paper to find the verses at the top of the first column. He was so delighted and bewildered that he stood looking at it for a long time, and is sure he did not read a word. At length his uncle called him back to his senses by bidding him keep at work. A Hot Climate. A British officer’s wife in Burmah describes the climate by this incident: “A friend gave my husband some owl’s eggs, which he left in a plate in the drawing room, the coolest place in the house, being in the center and surrounded by other rooms. The eggs were on a table in the corner, and were forgotten. Some days after I saw one of the eggs moving, and slightly chipped, suddenly out came a little owlet. The owl eggs followed suit, till they were bitched. This may seem impossible any one who has not lived where the Odd derivations: The word "pamphlet" is derived from the name of a Greek authores, Pamphylia, who compiled a history of the world into thirty-five little books. "Punch and Judy" is a construction from Pontus and Judas. It is a relic of an old "miracle play." in which the actors were Pontius Palate and Judas Iscariot. "Bugot" is from Visigotha, in which the fierce and infidel Arianism of Visigoth, conqueror of Spain, has been handed down to imamy. "Humbug" is from Hamburg; "a piece of Hamburg news" was in Germany a proverbial expression for false political rumors. "Ganze" rivens its name from Gaza, where it was first made. "Tabby cat" is all unconscious that her name is derived from Abab, a famous street in Baghdad, inhabited by the manufacturers of silken suits called atoi, or safety, the wavy markings of the water sinks resembling pussy's coat. "Old Sarach" is the demon swartti, who still survives in superstitions of Northern Europe. "Old Nick" is none other than Nikr, the dangerous water demon of Scandinavian legend. The lemon takes its name from the city of Lima. The term "Dark Agos" has been and is somewhat vaguely applied to the period between the fall of the Roman empire and the revival of letters in nineteenth to the fifteenth century, given a very wide sense, but most authors agree in saying that probably no darkest period for Europe was about the seventh century. In various countries there was a difference in the time of decline and revival of letters; as, or example, in the tenth century there was deplorable state of affairs in Italy and England. There was a gleam of light in the eleventh and twelfth centuries on the continent, followed by a collapse which lasted the fourteenth century. Value of Ammonia. Ammonia will remove finger marks from paint, where there would otherwise have to be a good deal of scrubbing with soap, which takes the paint off too. Ammonia is useful to wash all the brushes that are used in a household. Nothing will cleanse greasy sinks, pans or scrubbing brushes so well. A teaspoonful in a basin of warm water will make hair brushes beautifully white. Take care not to let back of brush tips below the surface; rinse them with clear, warm water, and put them in a sunny window to dry. A small bottle of ammonia is also useful for the wardrobe. Keep a little sponge with it, and when woolen dresses are stained or soiled they are easily cleaned by passing a little diluted ammonia over the spots. Fold a towel, and place under the spotted or soiled portion while you are cleaning the dress. "STARVATION" is a recent word and an Americanism. It is not found in English dictionaries of 1826-38. A Hot Climate. A British officer's wife in Burma describes the climate by this incident: "A friend gave my husband some owl eggs, which he left in a plate in the drawing room, the coolest place in the house, being in the center and surrounded by other rooms. The eggs were on a table in the corner, and were forgotten. Some days after I saw one of the eggs moving, and slightly chipped, suddenly came a little owlet. The owl eggs followed suit, till they were hatched. This may seem impossible to any one who has not lived where the thermometer is generally 105 degrees!" Medical Virtues of the Watermelon. Watermelon contains about ninety-five percent of the purest of water, and a space of the purest sugar, and nothing has yet been discovered that furnishes perfect and speedy a "cure" for summer complaint as watermelon, and nothing else. Even when diarrhoea has been kept up by continued eating of ordinary food, until the disease has become chronic, this delicious beverage for it is little more—watermelon, taken freely two or three times a day, again and again been known to work wonders, and to "cure" when all the usual remedies had failed. Food and Health. Insect Trap. A suggestion to employ artificial lights for the capture and destruction of noxious insects has found considerable favor. A medal was awarded at the last exhibition of agriculture and insectology at Paris for a lamp especially adapted for catching insects. The electric light has been found to be a very effective insect trap, and its eventual coming into use for this purpose in bug-infested gardens and orchards may be regarded as among the things that are possible. Overwork. An English scientist considers worry and overwork to be the most important causes of debility. The men, he says, who first enticed women and children into an industrial career, and they who have in later times devised the scheme of competitive examination, have done more to enfeeble the British than can be counterbalanced by the most perfect systems of drainage and ventilation, with the highest personal cleanliness superadded. "STARVATION" is a recent word and an Americanism. It is not found in English dictionaries of 1826-34. During Dorsey's examination in the Star Route trial, his very frequent reply to searching questions was "I don't remember." Alluding to this, one of the counsel for the prosecution in his speech to the jury was guilty of this sally: He would bury Dorsey alongside of Rerdell, and his fellow conspirators should be mourners. Over them he would erect an arch, one end resting on the grave of Dorsey and the other end on that of Rerdell—and on the keystone of the arch should be written the epitaph: "They were delightful and lovely in their lives, and in death they were not separated," and notwithstanding the counsel's prayers, Gabriel, when he passes over these graves, should blow his trumpet, and the corrupt and buried Dorsey should arise an immortal spirit and come into that last grand Court before the Great Searcher of hearts, before whom we must all appear—the Great Searcher, the All-Knower, should ask him, "Were you not in the flesh known as Stephen W. Dorsey?" the spirit would answer, "I don't remember." There is no Denying it. When the youthful composers, Gilbert and Sullivan, launched Pinafore out upon the uncertain sea of public favor they had but little idea of the revolution they would create in the line of comic opera. Thus it was with Dr. Swayne when he introduced his ointment for skin diseases. Its appearance has been characterized by the curtailment of expense and the total annihilation of scores of worthless nostrums. "Truth is mighty and will prevail." The wonders of modern chemistry are apparent in the beautiful Diamond Dyes. All kinds and colors of Ink can be made from them. The following letters tell their own story. "VALTHAM, GEORGIA, July 20, 1882 "I sold out of your Parent Dust Proof Cases about ten months ago, and the other day it came back to me with the request to make it wind easier. On examination I found that the stem was rusty, and I required into the cause of it. The gentleman stated to me that he was starting some sawlogs that had lodged in the head of the river, when his chain caught in a bush and threw his watch into about twelve feet of water, and he was about two hours finding it. When he got it out it was running and he thought all right. In about three months he found that the stem was hard to turn and sent it to me. I can say that the watch is all that the Company claims for it and recommend it to all railroad and mill men. B. W. BENTLY" "CLINTON, IOWA, April 29, 1881 "I wish you would send me a spring for the Winnie Watch." By the way this Ellery is a watch I sold in your Screw Bezel Case to a farmer last fall. The first of January he lost the watch in the cools and found it this week in al out one foot of water. It had rain three months and over in snow and water, with but slight injury to the watch only a hair spring. C.S. RAYMOND The above were very severe tests, and demonstrate beyond a doubt, that for any reasonable length of time during which a watch might be under water it would receive no injury whatever.
