A very wealthy lady living on Fifth avenue, New York, raises potatoes and tomatoes in her back yard, which she plants herself. A colored woman in Washington is so fond of President Arthur that every time she sees him she gets down on her knees to him. A recently converted Sandwich Island woman has drowned herself because a missionary would not give her his bright blue necktie. A Mexican lady of rank now visiting New York, has hair two and a half yards long. She wears it in two braids, and has a page to carry the owl as he would a train. HOUSEHOLD HINTS. Rich Pudding Sauce.—A large coffee cupful of sugar, one fourth pound of butter; beat till very light; break in one egg; beat very little; after the egg is in add one glassful of brandy or wine. Steam or use cold. Eve's Pudding.—Grate three-fourths of a pound of bread, three-fourths of a pound of suet, three-fourths of a pound of apples, three-fourths of a pound of currants, four eggs, and the peel of a lemon grated. Put into shape and boil three hours. Serve with sauce. Baked Almond Pudding.—Beat fine one-fourth pound of blanched almond with a little rosewater, the yolks of nine eggs, a lemon grated and the juice squeezed on it, six ounces of butter, a quart of thick cream. When well mixed, bake half an hour with a paste around the dish. Tomato Toast.—Run a quart of stewed ripe tomatoes through a colander, place in a porcelain stew-pan, season with butter, pepper and salt, and sugar to taste; cut slices of bread thin, brown on both sides, butter and lay on a platter, and just before serving add a pint of good sweet cream to the stewed tomatoes, and pour them over the toast. Potato Strips.—Pare, cut in long strips, lay in cold water for an hour, dry by spreading them on a towel and pressing another upon them; fry to a light brown in salted lard; shake off the fat in a hot colander; line a deep dish with a napkin and put in the strips. They should not be crowded in frying, but each should A recently converted Sandwich Island woman has drowned herself because a missionary would not give her his bright blue necktie. A Mexican lady of rank now visiting New York, has hair two and a half yards long. She wears it in two braids, and has a page to carry the ends as he would a train. One hundred young ladies of Youngstown, Ohio, with 100 spades, recently broke the ground for the new Methodist church, which is to cost $75,000 and is to be the finest in the State. A young lady well known in New York fashionable circles has hand-painted satin blankets matching in color every dress she owns, which her pug dog wears on the street. The dog's harness is crocheted with macrime cord. Mrs. S. W. Dorsey and her sister, Mrs. Peck, widow of the ex-Senator's partner, are in daily attendance at the Star route trials, and are much admired for their beauty. Mrs. Richard Frothingham, Jr., has presented to the Massachusetts Historical Society $3,000, together with the stereotype plates of her late husband's "Siege of Boston," "Life and Times of Joseph Warren," and "Rise of the Republic." A young miss of 14, named Lillie Pomeroy, jumped into a boat at Saginaw, Mich., and rowed out into the river, rescued a boy of 11 years who had been upset in the stream and would have been drowned but for her courageous action. Meanwhile fifty stalwart men looked on and did nothing. The power of love is emphatically shown in the case of a Bostonian, a zealous Protestant, who, within four months of the death of his wife, has married his Catholic servant girl, joined the Catholic church, and taken his children to a Catholic Sunday school. A beautiful woman of Troy, New York, works in the iron foundry. She has been crossed in love, and says the din of the iron shops is the only thing that keeps her from thinking and insanity. She has to make herself as physically miserable as possible to Potato Strips.—Pare, cut in long strips, lay in cold water for an hour, dry by spreading them on a towel and pressing another upon them; fry to a light brown in salted lard; shake off the fat in a hot colander; line a deep dish with a napkin and put in the strips. They should not be crowded in frying, but each should be distinct and free from the rest. Maccaroni WITH Eggs.—Break half a pound of maccaroni into short bits, cook tender in boiling salted water, drain well, put into a deep dish and pour over it a cupful of drawn butter in which have been stirred two beaten eggs and two table-spoonfuls of grated cheese, with salt and pepper; loosen the maccaroni to allow the sauce to penetrate the mass, and pass more grated cheese with it. Hunting Pudding.—Two pounds of suet chopped fine, three-fourths of a pound of flour, one pound of stoned raisins, two pounds of currants, half a pound of sugar, six eggs, six spoonfuls of rich cream, a wineglassful of brandy, four glassfuls of white wine, a good teaspoonful each of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon, mix over night and boil six hours. When turned out of the bag sift white sugar over it. Use rich sauce. Cream Cake.—A delicious cream cake to be eaten while fresh, is made of half a pound of flour, three ounces of butter, one teaspoonful of baking powder, two heaping tablespoonfuls of sugar, or a small teacupful, a pinch of salt, a teaspoonful of grated lemon peel, a cupful of cream that is not entirely sweet, and one egg. Beat the butter to a cream and mix the flour with it, then add the other ingredients; mix thoroughly and bake in a moderate oven. This is especially nice with fresh fruit. Scotch Pudding.—This is a plain but very wholesome pudding, and is given for the nursery dinner table: In a quarter of a pint of cold milk stir in two ounces of finely-ground oatmeal; mix thoroughly, then add this a pint of boiled milk. Sweeten with lump sugar while on the fire, but do not let the mixture boil. In order to thicken it stir in about two ounces of zealous Protestant, who, within four months of the death of his wife, has married his Catholic servant girl, joined the Catholic church, and taken his children to a Catholic Sunday school. A beautiful woman of Troy, New York, works in the iron foundry. She has been crossed in love, and says the din of the iron shops is the only thing that keeps her from thinking and insanity. She has to make herself as physically miserable as possible to keep her brain alert. A lady living near Windsor asked one of the keepers of the royal forest to obtain for her a young squirrel, which she intended keeping as a pet. The keeper replied that he could not, as he had received orders to kill 300 squirrels, the skins of which were wanted as cloak trimming for a certain illustrious lady resident in the neighborhood. The domestic arrangements of Wagner and Bulow, the pianist, have always been regarded as very curious. Divorce in Meiningen seems to be easier than in even Indiana, and Herr Von Bulow now desires to marry his former wife, Wagner's widow, who is understood to be as willin' as Barkis, and the present Frau von Bulow is quite as ready to be divorced and so free both her husband and herself from existing ties. Got Mad. A Texas man got mad because a waiter handed him a napkin, the other day. He said he 'reckoned he know'd when to use a hankercher without havin' no hints tnrow'd out.' But I feel confident that the man suffering with Itching Piles will not get his back up when he learns that Swayne's Ointment will cure him effectually. It has cured thousands of cases, and what it has done, it will do again. Ask you druggist for a box, and take no other. Swayne's Ointment, remember. Scotch Pudding.-This is a plain but very wholesome pudding, and is given for the nursery dinner table: In a quarter of a pint of cold milk stir in two ounces of finely-ground oatmeal; mix thoroughly, then add to this a pint of boiled milk. Sweeten with lump sugar while on the fire, but do not let the mixture boil. In order to thicken it stir in about two ounces of fine bread crumbs. As the milk and oatmeal cools it ought to be thick. Beat up two eggs and mix it with the oatmeal; flavor with cinnamon or nutmeg; pour in a buttered baking-dish and bake slowly one hour. A few seeded raisins are a nice addition to this pudding. Allcock's Porous Plaster CURE WHERE OTHER PLASTERS FAIL EVEN TO RELIEVE. Take no other or you will be disappointed. Insist on having ALLCOCK'S. PHILA., 308 NORTH THIRD ST., February 1, 1883. I have been using Allcock's Porous Plasters for a number of years and always with marked benefit. I have been much troubled with Muscular Rheumatism; have been treated by five of our best physicians without receiving any relief whatever. I then used Allcock's Plaster on the parts affected and I can assure you the pain has almost entirely left me. I can recommend them to every one as the best plaster made. I have tried other kinds but found them worthless. Weak Kidneys Cured. CONTOCOOK, N. H., March 3, 1880. I have been greatly troubled with Rheumatism and Weak Kidneys. I was advised to try Allcock's Porous Plasters (had used two other kinds of so-called Porous Plasters, which did me no good), but one of yours has worked like a charm, giving me complete relief, and I have not been troubled with Rheumatism and Kidney Complaint since using them, and I consider myself cured. To railroad men, travelers, miners, lumbermen and others who are not commonly exposed and who have to make frequent reference to the watch, these qualities are of the utmost importance. The following letters tell their own story. "VALDESTA, GROUND, July 20, 1832 "I sold one of your Panels just Proof Cases ah. ten months ago, and the other day came back to me with the request to make it good greiser. On examination I found that the stem was rusty, and I inquired into the cause of it. The gentle man stated to me that he was starting some sawlogs that had lodged in the bend of the river, since his chain caught in a bush and threw his watch into about twelve feet of water, and he was about two hours finding it. When he got it out it was running and he thought all right. In almost three months he found that the sten was hard to turn and sent it to me. I can say that the watch would that the Company claims for it and recommend it to all railroad and mill men." "CISTON, LOCK, April 19, 1831 "I wish you would send me a spring for the Win Ellery Watch." By the way this Ellery is a watch I sold in your Sewer Broker Case to a farmer last fall. The first of January he lost the watch in the woods, and found it this week in about one foot of water. It had lash three months and over in snow and water with but slight injury to the watch only a hair spring. C.S. BAYMOND" The above were very secure tests, and demonstrate beyond a doubt, that for any traumatic length of time during which a watch might be under water it would receive no injury whatsoever. After Long and Wary Waiting Relief is Brought to those who Need it. "Well, Pat," said an Orange county Physician to a complaining Irish patient some years ago. "For that pain in your chest you had better go home and put on a muskard plaster. I can't think of the minute of anything better. And by the way, arrived the doctor, turning to a friend," with somebody would invent a real good plaster something actually helpful for such cases as Pat's. Maybe they will sometime, when it's too late for me to use it. When BESSON'S CAPINE FORUS PLASTER was placed on the market at ten years ago the doctor's hope became a fact.
