(Detroit Free Press) They were working right in front of the hotel at a little hamlet in Alabama the chain gang. There were nine villainous looking men, each wearing shackles and having no shame as they looked into the faces of the strangers on the veranda. A chain gang is an everyday sight in the South, and few people waste sympathy upon the justly punished wretches, but all of a saddliness happened in this gang never to be forgotten. A boy not yet 14 years old came up with a pathol water, and we saw that he belonged to the chain gang. Larseny had sent him to associate with those villains for three long years. He looked A Passion for Caricature. The woman started back at the words, dragging the child with her, but in an instant he broke away, wheeled and clasped her hand and kissed it, and then what? Not a hand could have been lifted to prevent. The express was thundering up at forty miles an hour, not attending to make a stop here, and the lad turned from the woman whose kind words had opened the well-springs of his heart, and at the same tone horrified him at his situation, and with one spring he alighted in front of the locomotive. Next instant his crushed and mangled body was flung into the roadside ditch, and he had served his sentence. We picked him up tenderly, and the women wept over him as they washed the pale face and foiled the boy-hands over the crushed and broken breast, but the lad was beyond the need of earthly friends. Setting Hens. This is the season when hens run mad and will not be comforted unless they can hide away somewhere and sit day and night on a wooden nest egg or on an old door-knob. Several men were discussing this question in a grocery store one evening recently. A man who owns a large flock of Dorkins re-taken off she was astonished. Although the room was dark she could see objects several feet distant, but quite indistinctly, or "all mixed up," as she afterward declared. Dr. Fox was delighted at the success of the operation, which consisted in the removal of a cataract from the left eye by what is known as "Granth's method," and awaited with great interest the arrival of the time when his subject could be taken into the light. At last she was removed to one of the wards of the hospital which looked upon the street and the bandage was removed. The patient started suddenly, and cried out as it with tear, and for a moment was quite nervous from the effects of the shock. For the first time in her life she looked upon the earth. The first thing she noticed was a little flock of sparrows. In relating her experience to a reporter last night she said that she thought they were teacups, although, strange to say, a few moments afterward she readily distinguished a watch which was shown her. It is supposed that this recognition was owing to the fact that she heard its ticking and at once associated the two together. "It seemed kinder queer," she said to the reporter, "but I knew things putty quick." It appears that she was soon able to distinguish those objects which she had been accustomed to handle, such as a chair, a door or a table. She said that everything seemed pretty; and although at first all objects appeared to her bright and shining like gold, she soon became accustomed to colors, and can now distinguish them very well. For a long time distant objects appeared so near that she thought that she could touch them. She begins to distinguish distances, if not too great. Owing to her first impression of distance she was for some time afraid to walk with her eyes open, the ground or floor appearing a "fru way off," in strange contrast with her impression of distant objects. The popular impression that a person born blind who is restored to sight imagines that men and women are walking on their heads and trees look like elephants was not verified in her case, although she even now makes mistakes quite ludicrous as in the case of the birds for teacups. The blaze from a lamp excited the most lively surprise in her mind. She had no idea what it was, and when it was brought near her wanted to pick it up. When night approached upon the day when she first used her eyes she was in a fright, gearing that she was losing the sight which she had so wonderfully found after sixty years of darkness. Stem Winding MANCHESTER AMERICAN WALTHEN This case is formed or sewn opening in fusual cap, and according bility. These Watches are which an extra strong specially prepared watch. The case by screwing air tight function with is proof against dust. To railroad men, traitors who are afraid have to make frequent qualities are of the type following. "I sold one of your ten months ago, and me with the request examination I found inspired into the court to me that he was still lodged in the bed caught in a bush and twelve feet of water, finding it." When he thought all right that the stem was bad I can say that the three claims for it and five mill men. "I wish you would Ellory Watch I sold in your last fall. The next of the woods, and form of water. It had no snow and water, with only a hair spring." The above were beyond a doubt, this time during which would receive freezing. We make these calls as Perfectly Biting Watch Can to Produce its For Sale by a FORM. A Perfect Comfort Advantage There is no mistletoe FLOWERS OF CAPIINE INDUSTRIAL COAST PILLS PLANTATION SEABURY & JOHNSON A Passion for Caricature. (The Century) I knew one American student who had the curse of caricature upon him. When ever he saw a new face it worked on him like a spell. He had caricatured all the men in his set; not that he wanted to do it, but because he couldn't help it. He worshipped Holbine; and if he could have helped it he would never have drawn a line to raise a laugh. He was really a strong man; but now and then he had to yield to what he considered his infirmity, like a reforming tippler returning to his old habits under stress of temptation. There is a story of his calling on a new man, with the air of a visitor who is half ashamed of his errand. "Sit still," he said sadly,—"it won't take me long;" and without another word he drew out his pocket-book and fell to work on what proved to be a wonderful caricature of the freshman's face. It was the thing to take the conceit of a sitter for half his life time, and the soreness and ill-nature for the whole of it—it was so genial with intention and alive with fun. "You see, I knew I would have to do it sometime or other," he said, "and I thought I might get over it at once, if you didn't mind. Please keep it," he added—meekly handing his victim the sketch—"it is of no use to me now," and they parted the best friends in the world. A Perfect Remedy in 20 Diseases. ASHFIELD, MASS. I am verging on eighty years, and deem it my duty to suffering humanity to say that my long life is due to BRANDRETH'S PILLS which have been my sole medicine for half a century. I know the last forty-three years of my life are owing solely to their use. Your PILLS saved me many times after the best medical skill in several States had given me up as hopeless. I have had many converts to purgation with BRANDRETH'S PILLS and have seen them perform almost miracles of cure. For children, a few doses have cured measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough. In all female troubles and weakness I have never known them to fail. In adult males I have known them to cure the worst cases of dyspepsia, rheumatism kidney diseases, dysentery and diarrhea; even dropy, paralysis, and appoplexy have yielded to a persistent course of BRANDRETH'S PILLS. In fact I have found them the true Life Elixir. They act as continual preventives against the effects of time, disease and labor. John H. Mann. Setting Hens. This is the season when hens run mad and will not be comforted unless they can hide away somewhere and sit day and night on a wooden nest egg or on an old door-knob. Several men were discussing this question in a grocery store one evening recently. A man who owns a large flock of Dorkins remarked, "Not even an Act of Congress can break up a setting hen." "Ever tried jambin' em under a barrel an' pourin' water on 'em," demanded the man on the sugar barrel: "Yes," said the Dorking man, "I've poured water on 'em till they grew web-footed, like a blamed duck, and afterwards found them in an old coal hod settin' away on lumps of coal." "Tie a red rag round one wing," said a man who was eating cheese and crackers. "That'll fix 'em." Might's well offer 'em a chromo," said the Dorking man: "I tied a whole red woolled shirt on one last spring, and dog gon my cats if she didn't make a nest of it and set three weeks on the buttons." Then the grocer said it was time to close and each man girded up his loins and slowly filed out. Free of Charge. To railroad men, tractors, miners, lumbermen and others who are involved in its expansion and who have to make frequent reference to the watch, these qualities are of the utmost importance. The following letters tell their own story. "VANCOURT, GENOVA, July 26, 1852. "I sold one of your Patent Dust Proof Cases about ten months ago, and the other day it came back to me with the request to make it wind easier. On examination I found that the stem was rusty, and I impaired it. The gentleman stated to me that he was starting some sawdust that had lodged in the bead of the river, when his chain caught in a bush and threw his watch into about twelve feet of water, and he was about two hours finding it. When he got it out it was running and he thought it right. In about three months he found that the stem was hard to turn and sent it to me. I can say that the watch is so that the Company claims for it and for amend it to all railroad and mill men." B.W.BENTLY" "CILSTON, IOWA, April 29, 1881. "I wish you would send me a string for the Winchester Watch. By the way this Ellery is a watch sold in your Sewal Burel Gate to a Farmer last fall. The next of January he lost the watch in the woods, and found it this week in about one foot of water. It had him three months and over in snow and water, with but slight injury to the watch only a hair spring." C.S.RAYMOND" The above were very severe tests and demonstrate beyond a night that for any reasonable length of time during which a watch might be harder water it would receive no injury whatever.
