Tellens of exaggerated stories are known in business circles as yarn merchants. "When sorrow has left its traces what has become of the rest of the harbours? Mother wives formerly took "a stitch in time," now with the aid of a sewing machine, they can take one in less than no time. A bearing house mistress, like the rest of us, has her weak and her strong points; the weak point being her tea and her strong point the butter. "Nothing broke in." It was wear deep upon the best shelf. "I perhaps the kitty cut knows." With his say as it is! As the heart of a vanilla rose. Lessons for young housekeepers: "How can you tell a young fowl from an old one?" "By the teeth!" "By the teeth? But fowls have no teeth!" Finger Nails. Our finger nails grow out about three times a year. They should be trimmed with the scissors once a week, not so close as to leave no room for the dirt to gather, for then they do not protect the ends of the fingers, as was designed by nature; besides, if trimmed too close at the corners, there is danger of their growing into the flesh, causing inconvenience and sometimes great pain. The collections under the ends of the nails should not be removed by anything harder than a brush or a soft piece of wood, nor should the nails be scraped with a penknife or other metallic substance, as it destroys the delicacy of their structure, and will at length give them an unnatural thickness. We are not favorably impressed as to the cleanliness of a person who keeps his nails trimmed to the quick, as it is often done to prevent dirt gathering there; whereas, if a margin were allowed it would be an index to the cleanliness of the hands, from which the collections under the finger nails are made. Leave a margin, then, and the moment you observe that these collections need removal you may know that the hands need washing, when they and the nails are both cleaned together. Most persons are familiar with those troublesome bits of skin which loosen at the root of the finger nails; it is caused by the skin adhering to the nail, which, growing outward, drags the skin along with it, stretching at until one end gives way. To prevent this the skin should be loosened from the nail once a week not with a knife or a scissors, but with something blunt, such as the end of an ivory paper-entertter; this is best done after soaking the fingers in warm water, then pushing the skin back gently and slowly; the white speaks on the nails are made by scraping the nail with a knit at a point where it emerges from the skin. Biting off the finger nails is an uneasily practice, for thus the unsightly collections at the ends are kept beatiful! Children may be broken of such a filthy habit by causing them to pull the ends of their fingers several times day in wormwood bitters, without letting them know the object; if this is not sufficient, cause them to wear cap on each finger until the practice is continued. Hall's Journal of Health. Soul Burying. Whenever an Abchasian is drowned in search carefully for thieves' treasures... A new cure has been discovered for balking and cribbing horses by the application of Soul Burying. Whenever an Abbasian is drowned his friends search carefully for the body, but if this is not found, they proceed to capture the soul of the deceased in a measure which then has become matter of importance. A goatskin bag sprinkled with water and placed with its mouth, which is stretched open over a loop, looking toward the river, near the place where the man is supposed to have been drowned. Two corns are stretched from the spot across the river, as a bridge on which the soul can come over. Vegetation containing food and drink are set around the skin, and the friends of the deceased come an eat quietly, while a song is sung with instrumental accompaniments. The soul, it is believed, is attracted by the core-mones, comes over on the bridge that is laid for it, and goes into the trap. As soon as it has entered—that is, when the bag is inflated by the breeze—the opening is quietly closed, and the bag is taken up to the burial place, where a grave has already been prepared. The bag is held with the opening to the grave, the strings are untied, and the bag is squeezed into the grave, and the burial is afterward completed. This rite is considered of equivalent value with the burial of the body, and the grave is treated with the same honour if the body were really within it. — Popular Science Monthly. Expectancy of Life. Insurance companies are aware of the erudulous weakness of those whose lives they assure, and have, therefore, compiled numerous tables of expectancy of life for their own guidance, which are carefully referred to before a policy is granted. These tables have been the result of careful calculation, and solid proof misleading. Of course, sudden and premature deaths, as well as unusually extended, occasionally occur; but the average expectancy of life of an ordinary man or woman is as follows: A person 1 year old may expect to live 39 years longer; of 10 years, 31; of 20 years, 41; of 30 years, 34; of 40 years, 28; of 50 years, 21; of 60 years, 14; of 70 years, 9; of 80 year, 4. — Scientific American. In a case where the heart's action had been suspended by the administration of chloroform, the application of a large cloth wet with boiling water restored its action. Hot water would probably be similarly useful in cases of irregular heart action from other causes. A new cure has been discovered for balking and cribbing horses by the application of NARRH P., Thorp Springs: "Where so much I wear an engagement ring?" wear it on the second finger of the left hand, if everything is open and above the head; but if you do not want the old two be to know of the engagement we would advise you to wear it in the right-hand corner of an old striped stocking at the bottom of the bureau drawer. "Yes," whispered the boy to Mr. Barnum; "I'm ready to pay for my ticket, but I want the privilege of going in by crawling under the tent." And air. Barnum agreed, and ordered the guards not to interfere with the lad; and after the boy had performed the feat Mr. Barnum went inside and asked his reasons for it, and the lad explained that he had got over $7 bet with the boys who had tried the crawl and failed that he would succeed in it. "We'll, sir; I suppose you'll go back to school rested by your holiday," said a New Haven father to his "cubbiest" boy. "Yes, sir," replied the boy, with a softened expression, "and I'm going to sing the bell." "Is that so? I thought Sammy Goodboy rang the bell." "Well, he used to; but I'm ranging it in his place, now, don't you see?" "And what does Sammy do?" "Sammy? Why, he's nothing but a scholar." Dialourn between customer and Paris wine merchant: Customer—"Yees, I dare say it is a good wine, but I have some in my cellar that I think is more desirable, both as to quality and price. Here, let me give you some of it." Wine merchant (tasting)—"Let me see!" (putting it out). "Pah, why that's dye stuff. It's a nameless mixture, with everything in it but wine! My dear sir, you've been atrociously swindled! What Borgia did you buy that from?" Customer (displaying label on bottle)—"From you!" Beauty in a Paragraph. Beauty, though it be only skin deep, is a tremendous lever in its effect upon humanity. The monarch and the peasant bow down alike in homage to it. Every man admires beauty and it is the duty of every wife to make herself look as beautiful as possible, especially before her husband. Pimples and blotches often disfigure what would otherwise be a beautiful face, but in such cases Swayne's Ointment for skin diseases will alleviate the evil. In a case where the heart's action had been suspended by the administration of chloroform, the application of a large cloth wet with boiling water restored its action. Hot water would probably be similarly useful in cases of irregular heart action from other causes. A new cure has been discovered for balking and cribbing horses by the application of electricity. A gentleman of Baltimore county, Maryland, who has a horse subject to balking, placed an electric battery, with an induction coil, in his buggy, and ran the wires to the horse's bit and crutcher, and as soon as the horse came to a standstill the current was turned on, and after the horse was relieved of his shock he proceeded without showing any disposition whatever to balk. The same application was successfully made to a horse which indulged in cribbing, whereof he was soon cured through the unpleasantness of the electric shock. "Are there any more jurymen who have a prejudice against you?" whispered the young lawyer. "No, boss, de jury am all right; but now I wants you to challenge de Jedge. I has been convicted under him several times already, and maybe he is beginnin' to hab prejudice agin me." The young lawyer, this being his first case, took the advice of his client, and addressing the court, told the Judge he could step aside. The gentleman asked me that he was sorting some sawlogs that had fallen in the bond of the river, when his chain caught in a bush and threw his watch into about two feet of water, and he was about two hours holding it. When he got it out it was runaway, and he thought it all right. In about three months he found that the stem was hard to turn and sent it to me. "I wish you would send me a spring for the Wm Ellery Watch. By the way this Ellery is a watch I sold in your Sewer Bowl Case to a farmer last fall. The first of January he lost the watch in the woods, and found it this week in about one foot of water. It had just three months and over in snow and water with but slight injury to the watch—only a hair spring." C.S. RAYMOND.
