THE HEADSMAN OF PARIS.
M. Deibler, the Paris executioner, enjoys a stricture. Since M. Grevy was called to the Presidency of the Republic, the idea of Victor Hugo have been allowed to prevail, and no executions have taken place.
The actual guilt time differs considerably from that which is seen at Madame Tussaud's and is supposed to have rendered such sanctuary service to the first Republicans. As Monceau de Paris remarks, it is perfection itself, and none but a charl would refuse to place his neck in the loosette on a line with the bright, sharp knotless which are kept locked in a leather case at the private residence of the dead political close to La Requette. M. Deibler is acquitted man, impressed with the functions attested to him. He is of a retiring disposition, as if aware that the office he holds plans on beyond the pale of ordinary men; and causes him to be looked down on by the rest of his fellow creatures. No one would think while visiting him at his quiet home, that he has been the means of nursing hundreds into eternity, or would remember now Troppmann, the murderer of the Knock family, had hitten him to the bone when he was assisting at the execution of one of the most cold-blooded assassins of modern times. The apartment he occupies is over the stable where the gallitine is kept, parked away until it is wanted for use, and those who describe their visits to the executioner, and relate how he cut a truss of straw in two to show the working of his instrument, have every reason to be thankful for a well-developed imagination. M. Deibler is a tailor by trade, and more than one workingman in the quarter of La Riquette has had his clothes repaired by him. He is not a commutative man, and the idea that his name will appear in print makes him nervous, for in one or two occasions he has been taken to talk by the Parisian journalists, who have accused him of unnecessary rongeness. His books hardly bear out such a charge, for there is nothing of the bully about him, and those who meet him of a Sunday afternoon when he takes his wife out for a walk with him along the boulevards, would take him to begin ordinary working man bent on employment.

The Friendship of Fish.
Bertram, in the British quarterly Review
An average herring contains about 25,000 ova, so that 1,000 females of that fish would yield if all the eggs were to come to life, 25,000,000; but hundreds of thousands of the egg altogether escape the fertilizing milk of the male fish, and other hundreds of thousands are devoured by enemies that seem to think the ova of the herring has been created solely to serve as food to them. All our sea fishes are endowed with enormous powers of reproduction. A female collish has been known to contain 2,000,000 or 3,000,000 ova; as has been stated of the herring, the waste of eggs from the want of being functional, and from other causes, is really enormous. The flat fishes are also all of them, very productive; but in the case of all sea fishes the waste of life is really calculable, otherwise we would be incapable of dealing with these minor monsters of
The Electric Street Car.
[Philadelphia Gazette]
An electric street car was tried in London some weeks ago, and report by cable represented that it was entirely successful. The London papers that report the experiment, while they are entirely favorable to the new motor in their comments, present facts which scarcely justify the unqualified approval it has received. The driving belt got out of order on the return trip, for instance, and the car had to be drawn by horses had to be used on ascending grades. The opinion is expressed that the mechanical faults exposed in the trial trip can easily be remedied, but it is manifest that the motors will have to be secured against such accidents before they can be of practical use. The motor is a Siemens dynamo machine,
Yield, if all the eggs were to come to life,
23,000,000; but hundreds of thousands of the egg altogether escape the fertilizing milk of the male fish, and other hundreds of thousands are devoured by sometimes that seem to think the ova of the herring has been created solely to serve as food to them. All our sea fishes are enclosed with enormous powers of reproduction. A female codfish has been known to contain 2,000,000 or 3,000,000 ovies as has been stated of the herring, the waste of eggs from the want of being functional, and from other causes, is really enormous. The first fishes are also, all of them, very productive; but in the case of all sea fishes the waste of life is really calculable, otherwise man would be incapable of dealing with these minor monsters of the great deep. As has been shown in the case of the herring, there are animals preying on the shoals, the demands of which are far more deadly than those of mankind; the same may doubtless be said of most of our other sea fishes. But the total stock of fish of all ages must indeed be prodigious. There are, however, many difficulties in the way of fixing upon a figure. It is not yet known, for instance, with anything like certainty, at what age herring or codfish arrive at the majority of their lives; but it may be hazarded as a conclusion, which has not been arrived at without the most careful consideration, that the sea in all probability contains a supply of fish which, in the event of production ceasing, would last the community for a period of five or six years. The fish, of course, must be of all ages; but no man can tell the exact age of any of the fish which he may from day to day find on his table. Nor can we tell the average age which any of our sea fish may attain. Many of the codfish we capture "look" to be very old demizens of the deep—10 years old at least. And as some of the fish which are captured are occasionally of an enormous size, that fact seems to indicate a long period of life. We think, however, taking the majority of fishes into account, that if the creation were at once to stop, and the fish of the sea were sadly to cease to multiply and replenish, the present stock, at the rate of capture now going on, might last us for a period of four to five years.
"You wouldn't take me for a married man, would you?" asked a student of a Cortland girl last Sunday night. "I rather think I would if you should ask me," was the response. He bought a ring next day.
A Scotch parson said, somewhat sarcastically, of a hard drinker, that "the put an enemy in his mouth to steal away his brains, but that the enemy, after a thorough and protracted search, returned without anything."
Fort Collins indulged in a broom drill last week. A squad of charming young ladies, led by an old army officer, filed out on the stage, and the performance began. The old veteran who was drilling the girls, forgetting that he was commanding ladies instead of men, in the course of the drill gave this singular order: "Heads up, body erect, hands at the side, with the middle finger resting upon the seam of the pants leg." The yells of the audience knocked off nine cubic yards of plaster from the ceiling. The broom brigade stood fire for a moment, then wavered, executed a flank movement and beat a hasty retreat.

Interesting Facts Concerning our own Country.
California furnishes the most gold, Nevada the most silver, Georgia the most cotton, Cincinnati the most pork, Pennsylvania the most coal, Virginia the largest number of Presidents. Texas the most cattle. We might continue thus and enumerate every State and Territory, giving to each a distinctive prominence, but the brevity of space presents it. We will therefore only add that Dr. Swayne furnishes more Pills for Bulbousness, Headache, Constipation, Loss of Appetite and other similar ills than any other physician in the world.
