The Scope of the Sewing Machine.
There are few conquests left for the sewing machine of the future to make in the line of variety. So various have been the uses to which our present machines have been adapted that little is left the hand needle to do. There are machines to sew the heaviest leather, and others to stitch the finest gauze or lace. Machines make button holes and eyelet holes superior to the best hand work, and at a speed that would exhilarate an ordinary seamstress; while buttons are sewed on by modern attachments much faster, in both senses, than with the "eye in the other end." There are over-seam machines that sew carpets, others for glove work, and similar ones for far sewing, and these leave a seam that flattens out neatly, and the stitching is as smooth and regular as can be desired by the most exacting. Other machines sew books and pamphlets, while still others, with wire for thread, sew brooms and brushes. Sewing machines with the shuttle concealed in the end of a long and slender arm sew the soles on shoes and boots with a speed and rapidity that make two pairs cost less than one pair would otherwise cost, while outlasting four pairs of the old fashioned ready-made foot.

Dash machines will sew around the clash of a carriage almost in the twinkling of an eye, and such is their capacity that they will switch to the center of an eight foot circle. Writing and embroidery of various kinds may be done on almost any of hair modern machines without any attachment, and some of them will darn and patch in a manner to delight the tired mother of a houseful of pumping boys. Two or more parallel rows of sewing may be done on the twin—there may be a triplet needle machine; and one of the latest achievements of this machine is to sew the flat seam in four bolt cloth, a feat until recently considered impossible. Cordage is sewed by machine and so is straw braid for hats and bonnets. The scope of the sewing machine seems limited only by the variety the needs of mankind—and womankind may demand. The sewing machine inventor, as a class, may soon have to sit down, as did Alexander, and cry because there are no more worlds for him to conquer. He will do less regret that he was not born a little earlier in the sewing machine age, before all the great inventions had been studied out and perfected. There is little but to him to do except in the direction of perfecting the present machines and cheering their production. But even here he will find ample and profitable work for his ample genius and mechanical skill—Sewing Machine Journal.
Simple Care for Cold Feet.
The following remedy for cold feet is recommended by the Pleasant's Journal for sedentary sufferers, as well as policemen, car drivers, and others who are exposed to the cold. All that is necessary is to stand erect and very gradually to lift one's self up upon the tips of the toes, so as to put all the tenbous of the foot at full strain. This is not to hop or jump up and down, but simply to rise—the slower the better—upon tiptoe, and to remain standing on the point of the toes as long as possible, then gradually coming to the natural position. Repeat this several times, and, by the amount of work the tips of the toes are made to do in sustaining the body's weight, a sufficient and lively circulation is set up. A heavy pair of wooden stockings drawn over thin cotton ones is also a recommendation for keeping the feet warm, and at the same time tracing their hoop tenderness and firmness.
Our friend, W.C. Greenleaf, of Jamul, is a much congratulated man. On Tuesday a son was born to him—a fine twelve pound boy; his cow had twin calves; a sow littered eight pigs; a turkey hatched fifteen eggs, and a hen brought ten chicks off the nest. Greenleaf is running a paying ranch—San Diego Vernon.
A Carson clergyman, preaching on gambling and intemperance, startled his hearers by stating that, one night during the recent session of the Nevada Legislature, there were congregated around a faro game twelve Assemblymen, seven Senators, two women and a miscellaneous crowd of rounders, capers and check giverillas.
An electrical apparatus for detecting and locating minerals has been inserted by a Denver man. It is a small electric machine with small points at the ends of the positive and negative wires. These points being held near together and over a piece of mineralized rock, gave a constant succession of sparks when passed over mineral of any kind, but a barren rock does not affect them. It the ore extends through the rock continuously, the machine will show it by holding the points on opposite sides of the rock. It will show whether the rock carries mineral or not, and also shows the comparative quality of ore. If one pole is placed in contact with ore in any mine, and the other pole applied to a supposed extension of the vein, it will show at once whether it is the extension or not.
His Distress Signal.
Texas Suffragists.
A colored man was basically engaged in sawing wood for Col. Powys, when the latter observed that the bosom of the man and brother, so to speak, was adorned by an Old Fellows' breastpin.
"Do the white Odd Fellows and the colored Odd Fellows in Austin affiliate?" asked Col. Powis.
"Don't millyate wuf a cuze, but dey helps each other out."
"Well that's the same thing isn't it?"
"No, sah! hit not de same ding."
"What's too difference?
The colored man stopped sawing wood and made the following explanations:
"Last week when dat norther was a freezing de marrow in yer bones, I went inter de saloon of a white man what totes des very same emblem. I was in distress, rare distress, as I hadn't had a dram dat mornin', so I grab him de signal ob distress."
"Did he respond?"
"He didn't gib de proper response. De proper response would haben to had rubbed to ter ear with his right hand, and to nab sort out de bottle."
"Then he did not respond correctly?"
"No sah! he made a motion at the doah wid one hand, and reached under the bar wid de other. I mailed de Odd Fellows' signal of distress once moah, and den sumhn hard hit me on de head and knocked me clean out inter de street. Hit was the bung starter what dat white 'brudder Odd Feller had frowed at me in response to the distress signal."
"Then the colored Odd Fellows and the white Odd Fellows do not affiliate?"
"Just what I tole yer. Dey don't filiyate but dey helps each older out. I was helped out inter de street wid de hung starter, but
A propos of the recent death of Heine's wife, whose temper was said to be not of the sweetest, the following words of the famous poet are recalled: "I mean to leave all my money to my wife, on condition that she shall marry again. I long to be regretted after I am dead, and I am certain that whoever marries her will regret as long as he lives that I ever died." But all Heine's money was only a thousand dollars a year, and this his widow had without changing her name.
2 lovers sat beneath the shade,
And 1 un2 the other said:
"How 14-8 that you b9.
Have smiled upon this suit of mine;
It 5 a heart, it palps 4 you—
Thy voice is music melody—
Tis 7 to be thy loved 1, 2—
Say Oy nymph, wilt marry me!"
Then lisped she soft, "Why 13ly."
The Mugby Junction tea party is a device, of Massachusetts invention, for yielding fun and money for churches. Baskets containing suppers for two persons are sold by auction. Each bears the card of the woman who prepared the meals enclosed, and the purchaser has her for a companion at table,
proper response would have been to rubbish his ten earwid his right hand, and to hold out de bottle.
"Then he did not respond correctly?"
"No, sah; he made a motion at the doah wid one hand, and reacted under the bar wid de other. I made de Old Fellows' signal of distress once moah, and den summin hard hit me on de head and knocked me clean out interde street. Hit was the bung starter what dat white bruider Odd Feller had frowed at me in response to the distress signal."
"Then the colored Odd, Fellows and the white Odd Fellows do not affiliate?"
"Just what I told yer. Dey don't filiayate but dey helps each older out. I was helped out inter de street wid de hung starter, but filiayate means to set out de whiskey."
A Wonderful Wine-Taster.
A correspondent of the Boston Herald recently visited the great wine vaults in London and tells of the old wine-grader's skill at tasting wine. He blindfolds himself and there is poured into a glass four different kinds of sugar. He takes a moutiful on his tongue and at once declares a mixture of four cheap bar room sherries, two of which have been sweetened with brown sugar and called by the abominable title of brown sherry. He is right, and his next experiment is with port, which he correctly tests on each trial. But when a bottle of Cook's imperial champagne from St. Louis is opened he hesitates and declares it is a new one for him, but it is a good wine, with more brandy in it than it ought to have, and he thinks it is from some northern grown grape. He was entirely nonplussed over some apple whisky; but, when bottle after bottle of champagne of the standard brands was opened, he named every one with great accuracy, giving the year in each case—Pomery '74, G. H. Mumm's '77, Veuve Cliquot '80, Heidsieck '78, King, and so on through the list without an error. In each case he simply brought a taste to his lips and spat it out again almost directly, and then inhaled a breath from some ammonia flavored water. I am told he has an income of nearly £3,000 a year from this branch of business alone, but that he is so inordinate vain of his faculty that he will neglect everything to show it off, and even buy the wine himself to do it with, if he can secure a crowd of admirers.
A High-Tempered Lawyer
Milwaukee (Wis.) April 20 — Kate Kane, Milwaukee's only female lawyer, created a decided sensation in the municipal courtroom this morning. Sitting beside the clerk while the Judge's attention was directed toward the jury, Miss Kane grasped a glass of water, which she held poised in her hand till the Judge looked around, when, with a rapid, vicious jerk, she threw the water squarely in his face, with thus: "Take that, you dirty dog." Judge Mallorey fairly sputtering with rage and indictment, anger ordered Kate arrested. She was ordered to the prisoner's dock and fined £50 and costs for contempt. Then Kate broke out into a perfect torrent of abuse, calling the Judge names, and telling him she would rather go to jail than pay a fine that the county jail was a far more respectable place than the Municipal Courtroom with his Honor in it; that his recent election was accomplished through battery and fraud, and much else, to which Judge Mallorey simply replied: "Jakk the creature out of this Court."
"You have insulted me, you dirty dog!" screamed Kate. She struggled to free herself from the grasp of the Deputy Sheriff and fought and struggled all the way down into the gerrick's office below. When there and was asked whether she wished to pay her fine, and replied venomously, "No; I will not in jail first." Application for her release under a writ of habeas corpus was made, but the Sheriff chose to exercise his privilege of withholding service till, to morrow. So she will occupy a cell in jail tonight. The trouble grew out of the fact that the Judge appointed a misonline attorney to defend a barglar, after the State's attorney had informed the Court that Kate had consulted with the prisoner about the case.
An "angry tree," a species of acacia, is growing on a farm in Virginia, Nev. It was brought from Australia and is now eight feet high and growing rapidly. It shows all the characteristics of the sensitive plant. When the sun sets its leaves fold together and the ends of the tender twigs curl up like a pogtail. If the twigs are handled the leaves move uneasily for a minute or more.

A Sure Cure for Piles and Skin Diseases.
A person who suffered horribly from Piles and Skin Diseases, hearing of a noted physician in Germany who invariably cured these diseases, exposed the ocean for treatment. He was permanently cured after a short journey. He found something that the salve used to perform the cure was the same article that is sold in this country under the name of Swayne's Treatment. His anger, when he discovered his great blemish, can easily be imagined. Times and Gazette.
It is related, to the great credit of Major Henry D. McDaniel, the newly elected Governor of Georgia, that having been the guardian of some orphan and minor children during the war, and having invested a portion of their estate in Confederate bonds, he redeemed every dollar of them at the close of the war as soon as he had earned money enough to do so.
