"I was delighted this morning to see offered as a premium a reproduction of a very beautiful picture, 'In The Meadow,' by Dupre. This picture is an illustrator." This superb engraving, 174 by 12 inches, exquisite of wide borders in worth more than the cost of both journals. A Washington editor I was present upon the opening of the United States Supreme Court at noon today. The Court never meets until moon, and always adjourns at first moon. PLAGUES AND PESTILENCES. At a recent meeting of the members of the Statistical Society, London, Mr. Cornelius Walford read a paper on the "Chronology of Plagues and Pestilences, as affecting Human, Animal and Vegetable Late." The facts collected by Mr. Walford are interesting, as showing the superstition of the people in an ages of the world's history. The view that plagues and pestilence are judgments dated from the earliest Pagan times, and students of the classics will remember the plague supposed to have been caused in Attica by the glos as a punishment for the swagger of a sacred bear; that in Inessay by Apollo on account of disrespect shown, a plague at Suyon caused by Apollo and Arctima for the same reason; and the plague in Samaria given in Josephus as the punishment of monarchy. In the Iranian, Humer describes the plague which prostrated the Greek camp troops of Wash of Apollo at anointed offered to chrysos, as high priest. A similar plague was introduced by Apollo at Corinth, on account of his prophesies killing his prophet, Delhi, we are told, suffered a plague and famine as punishment for the treatment of Esop. In Rome a diretin plague raged, when the city nine books proceed to have been canned by the inconvenience of a vexor virgin, who strangled herself to avoid being tormented after. Scripture reports are frequent five instances of plagues inflicted by God as direct punishment for discontent and murmurings among His chosen people. Coming to profane matter, we learn, A.D. 655, over population caused a heart of food in Ireland, which prepared the people for a severe allusion of plague, which had broken out in England the year before. Ruth tells us that the pity of the kingess at the victory of Creasy, in 1617, and the surrender of Calais the year after, induced such unfortunate excess and debility that God, not permitting these disorders to go unpunished, inflicted the plague, which after traversing Asia and Europe, raked with such fury in London that 50,000 persons were burned in the churchyard of the Charterhouse another. The belief in these direct purgations remained down to very modern times. That earthquakes are the more potent of the German pogues and pestilences had the support of Scripture authority; notably in the fourteenth chapter of Zacharias and the seventeenth of St Luke, verse 2. Tumidles mutations a plague associated with serious earthquake, presenting the annual invasion of Africa, and the famous Black Death of India was preceded by fear for earnest peaks and fiery meteors of portents aspect. A violent earthquake in Central territory marked the third appearance of the devastating illness and epidemic. THE HIGHEST-BENCH The only Court in the Land Where the Judges Wear Gowns. A Washington letter says I was present upon the opening of the United States Supreme Court at noon today. The Court never meets until moon and always arrives at four o'clock. Scott is in no sense a hard-worked Court. There is a great deal of unpleasant ceremony about the opening of all Courts, but the Supreme Court carries off the cake. It is the only Court in the land where the Judges wear gowns. As the Judges show up on the Court room, the Marshal of the Court announces in a loud voice the presence of the Chief Justice and Associate Justices. Everyone tries to their feet. They take a look at the members of the law make a kind of a low and outdown. Then everybody else sits down, the Marshal going on with his song about "Oh yes, Oh yes, the Supreme Court is now in session, and all persons having less before it will draw near and give their attention." He winds up with a prayer requesting "God to bless the country and this particular Court," and then sits down not to be heard again until tour outback when he pursued the Court with a similar ceremony. For doing this and preparing a book of some kind during the day on his "Recollections" A woman himself, the Marshal is Mr. Sanday, who was Private Secretary under Linden he describes a salary of $6,000 per year. The fact is however that the Court is not so much three months in the year, so the Marshal receives 90,000 for the three months. It is generally ceased that Judge Miller or the best lawyer of the Court Judg. Feld on the tail side of every case that comes up before the Court. Judge Bradley gives more attention to the question of drafts, currents of air, and ventilation than anything else. He says that there is a draft of cold air striking him right on top of the head, or she and he of the back when there is no such draft. Judge Gray wears a white rackknife on the front. This is the sum of his funding, except that he laughs too much while on the bench. There is no particular reason why he should not laugh if he wants to but then it is not the custom, and custom raises the Court with an iron hand. Judge Hatfield is the richest judge. But he is not happy. He lives under the constant threat that his house is to be robbed. Several attempts have been made to enter his house, but he has so many bikes and locks that the owner prising burglar gave up the job each time without getting anything. Judge Woods has the smallest cost and fraud. Judge Field is the elocutionist of the bench. He can make the dullest document or decision interesting. Judge Harlan is the youngest judge. He is hot city. The Chief Justice That earthquakes are the more potent of the German plegasus and pestilence had the support of Sapphire authority; notably in the fourteenth chapter of Zachariah and seventeenth of St. Luke, verse 2. The didles mention a plague associated with serious earthquake, presenting the annual invasion of Africa, and the famous Black Death of India was preceded by fear for earth peaks and fiery meteors of portentous impact. A violent earthquake in Central Asia may be ahead of the third appearance of the devastating illness and epidemic pneumonia in 1847, and of that epidemic in Thailand a fire scale time, which pays now believe to have been diphtheria. The greatest form of Mount Hecla, in 1783, when a wave of twelve miles wide flowed in six waters a distance of sixty miles into thunder was followed by diseases of a most pervasive and moderate kind. In the same year there were most deserves in plegasus in Italy and Messenia, and writing pestilences presented in central Europe due to its supposed mainly to the vaporous exhalations. Great destruction of life has been attributable different times to mpatients not due to earthquakes. In the year 140 B.C., the Roman army in Algeria are said to have fallen victims to vapors generated by themselves for the election tomorrow to abandontants, and in A.D. 165 a plague at Rome, provided by a still more destructive plague in Asia, was suppressed to have laid down its origin in itself from a small box within a Roman solider had opened at the escape of Salem. Our own animals tell of a marvelous visitation of calm and tranquility in 3223 by which they get out of the Council of Farmers in years Cambridge were solely tried. Such shades of light entered the church that both man thought it had been set on fire, and saw a glittering smoke with that outside of the company fell sick thereof and lively respired death. The plague of 1340, which is said to have begun in China, from the vapors proceeding from a certain heavy whirlwind from the atmosphere, or was emitted from the earth, caused awful mentality. In France 100,000 people died in London 20,000 are said to have died in a single week; while 163,000 persons in Venice 90,000 in Lisbon, and 290,000 in Spain. One of the modern theories ascribes pestilence to cosmic dust composed of iron, cobait, and other substances. This receives some support from the Jewish writer Pinhot who in A.D. 92 describes a "bound pestilence arising from clouds of dust", which proliferates severely and intracellular formation of skin, both men and animals. In A.D. 523 during a pestilence in Rome, the air was charged with a mix of osmine dust which infused violent sneezing, which gave rise to the expression "Dusty breath" to a sneezer, a poison not yet extinct. A haze or "Sky fog" has been frequently noted as accompanying childe visitations. Such a haze, when worn at a pale shade shade, and possessed of peculiar drying properties, and of a marked and indeterminate odor, was very prevalent in the year of convulsions just a couple days after its dispersion in E750 was attached with violent trembling stones. It is evident that this haze may be associated with this powerful Agate when seen to pervade the atmosphere after volcanic and earthquake eruptions, and on scientific grounds it seems clear that some diseases may be occasioned. During plagues and pestilences popular superstition has frequently suggested poisoning the waters as the cause. Different seeds were thus used to cause each other of this and other malpractices, and these PHILADELPHIA, April 14th. — The Chinese engaged to play baseball struck for salaries of $20 a week and expenses, which was allowed, and the practice for a tour resumed. J. D. Culp & Co., cigar manufacturers of San Francisco, have made an assignment to E. B. Pond, with liabilities at $30,000 or $40,000. The Company has tried to develop tobacco culture in this State, owning a plantation at San Felipe. The crops have decreased in amount and deteriorated in quality for some years, and the business has had to struggle against great odds. Contributions are being raised at Tueson for a fund to secure the release of little Charlie McComas from the Apaches. He was carried away by the Apaches after they had murdered his father and mother at Thompson's Canyon, N. M., on March 28th. Subscriptions are solicited elsewhere. Tybo Frank, an Indian who was feared by his people, the Piutes, and who had killed a member of his tribe and boasted of immunity from death, was enticed by the braves of his tribe on a hunting expedition, and while seated around the camp fire, was caught by the hair by one of the braves, while another cut his head off. During plagues and pestilences popular superstition has frequently suggested poisoning the waters as the cause. Different sects were thus led to accuse each other of this and other malpractices, and the mortality arising from disease was swelled by slaughter. At Mentz 12,000 Jews fell victims to the population on suspicion of having poisoned the wells of the city. In Milan, in 1630, when a severe visitation of plague occurred, there was a popular belief that the disease was propagated by people who animated the walls of the houses with a poison fatal to all who touched it; and many unfortunate who were suspected lost their lives; while the house of a barber named Mora, who was accused of preparing the poison, was pulled down, and a column known as the "Column of Infamy," was erected on the site, where it remained until 1778. Drought, both in ancient and modern times has been too intimately connected with diseases of intestinal severity, to leave much doubt of their being in some way connected. Pestilence has been caused not unfrequently by the decaying bodies of locusts and animals perishing during an epizootic visitation, as well as by decaying vegetable substances. Under all other heads some very curious and interesting facts were collected and stated, and a complete enumeration was given of all the authenticated cases of plagues that have afflicted humanity, and of the legislative means taken for mitigating their effect; the author suggesting, at the conclusion of his paper, that there still remained to be treated the "Periodicity of Plague Visits," the "Spontaneous Origin of Disease," and Pestilential Cyclones." — English Mechanic.
