Baggs of Napa Inspector of Fruit Pests, not understanding his candid admiration that he knew nothing about fruit pests. He promised, however, to study up the subject and qualify himself for a crusade against the bugs. As there are in this State numerous skilled entomologists who would have readily accepted the office, it is apparent that the position (salary $150 a month) was created more as a reward for party service than from any yearning desire to benefit horticulturists. The question of permitting Chinese children to receive tuition in the public schools in this State having been brought to the attention of State Superintendent Wecker, that official has decided against their admission, and claims that his decision is upheld by the Constitution. But as an offset to this, and as a balm to the Mongolians, it is asserted that there is no law preventing the marriage of whites and Chinese. Section 5909 of the Code says: "All marriages of white persons with negroes or mulattoes are illegal and void." But there is no prohibition of marriages between whites and Mongolians, though this is the miscegenation which California might be expected to be most serious to suppress. This government is to introduce a severe bill in the English Parliament, intended to check dynamic work. It makes the penalty for causing explosions by which life or property is imperiled, penal service for life. An attempt to cause an explosion; for the making or keeping of explosives, is to be punished by twenty years of imprisonment, and the number of offenses at the hearing. ANAHEIM'S OSTRICHES. A Visit to the Ostrich Farm—Some Facts Regarding an Industry which Will Rapidly Develop Following the example of the five thousand other people who had preceded him, the editor visited the ostrich farm on Wednesday to look upon the strange birds there congregated. The farm, as heretofore stated, is now permanently located seven miles from Anaheim in a north-westerly direction. A section of land 640 acres has been set apart for this initial farm. The land is moist, slightly alkaline, and a fine artesian well furnishes water for irrigation. It is situated but a few miles from the coast, and is swept by a not unpleasant sea breeze in the afternoon. In short, the location is one that would naturally suggest to the birds thoughts (if they could think) of home, sweet home. The climatic difference between their Anaheim and African home is but slight, and were it not for the embarrassing fact that the seasons are the very antipodes of each other, there would not have been the slightest hitch in the operations of the birds. As it is, however, their laying season is quite well advanced, and only two eggs have so far been produced. Six of the female birds show "signs" of laying, and Superintendent Sketchley expects to begin the incubating process next week. In about two months from now visitors to the farm will see a large number of curious young chicks strutting around. The female lays an egg on alternate days to the number of fifteen when, if permitted to set, she considers her work done. If, however, the eggs are taken from her, she will lay thirty before she discovers the deception. And such eggs! The one shown us weighs three and one half pounds, and contains food sufficient to furnish a plentiful breakfast for four men. Dean, a mining man of wealth, Moses Hopkins, also a millionaire, is the Vice President, Mr. Bates is Secretary and the Bank of California is Treasurer. Among the Board of Directors are Mr. Waterhouse, Mr. Babcock, Dr. Protheroe, Dawnt Whiting, Capt. K. F. Northam and C. B. Polhemus; while among the stockholders are the owners of the Stearns Ranchs, to which circumstance Anaheim is indebted for the location of the farm here. The experiment will not be a failure from any lack of money, for the stockholders are men of wealth; it will not be a failure from any lack of experience in the management of the farm, for Mr. C. J. Sketchley, the Superintendent, is probably the most expert breeder of ostriches who could be found. Added to long practical experience in ostrich farming, he has made an intelligent study of the bird and understands to the minuteest detail everything required for their successful raising. It is to his progressive ideas that we are indebted for this new industry. He saw the business in South Africa grow into huge proportions, giving great profits under adverse circumstances. He saw that the producer was not shoot every dog found about the premises. It is to be hoped that hereafter visitors to the farm will remember that they are there upon sufferance, and will behave as guests ought to behave. A common offense has been that of plucking feathers from the birds. This is a serious loss, for not only is the feather itself lost to the Company, but the feather which grows in the place of the one surreptitiously plucked comes so twisted and distorted as to be valueless. Care and experience is necessary in plucking so as not to injure the second growth. The ostrich industry is of comparative recent origin. It only began to assume large proportions about sixteen years ago, and since then it has steadily developed. But the increasing production of feathers has no influence on the price. The feathers bring the same price in the London market now that they did sixteen years ago. No lady and we might add, no husband; need be told that genuine ostrich feathers are very high priced, and that even a good imitation is costly. The danger of over-production is so remote that this generation need not hesitate about embarking in the business on that account. Mr. Sketchley will pluck the birds next week, sending the feathers to San Francisco to be cleaned and curled. This is a separate branch of the business, and in San Francisco it is carried on mostly by French people. When the feathers are prepared, they will be offered for sale to visitors to the farm. Ostriches are very long lived. There are many breeding birds on the African farms that are thirty-six years old; and some of the finest breeding birds in the colony are owned by a Kafir chief, and are known to be over eighty years old. The farm and its occupants are objects of public interest just now. Over five hundred people visited it a few Sundays ago, and scores of visitors are watching the strange birds every day. It would seem as if the hospitality and good nature which permits them to visit the farm at all hours without hindrance, should be sufficiently respected to avoid unnecessary annoyance to the Superintendent. But the number of rude and boorish visitors are so great that it will probably result in the exclusion of everybody. They drive over the plowed ground, hitch their horses to the corrals, pull the feathers from the birds, tease and anger them, penetrate innumerable petty but annoying offenses, and consider themselves aggrieved when remonstrated with. In utter disregard of the oft-repeated injunction against bringing dogs on the farm, almost every other visitor has a cur at his heels. The ostriches are in mortal terror of dogs. They know instinctively when one is within a mile of them, and are in great distress as long as it is visible. Moral sanction having proved powerless, the Superintendent will hereafter, in sheer self-defense, New York, April 10th. — A Chinese baseball club has been organized by Manager Ford. The Celestials have been practicing for two days and an account of their agility have readily acquired the stopping of hot grounders, making double plays and finding fault with decisions made by the umpire. The club will play its first game next Thursday, in Philadelphia, after which it will give exhibition games in Newark, Trenton and this city. The manager is inclined to believe his club of foreigners will do better than giving burlesque exhibitions of the game, and says they are rapidly improving. New York, April 10th. — Sunday night Annie Metcalfness, a comely young girl, was arrested at the instance of her father just as she was about to marry a Chinaman named Hong Lee. She said she had been compelled to leave her home on account of ill treatment, but consented to go back with her father. He demurred, asserting she was beyond his control, as she had already been in the House of the Good Shepherd and in the Snake Hill Penitentiary, though not yet 16 years of age. Bedford, Ind., April 9. — In an adjoining county last week, relatives disinterred the body of John Bryant, buried two years ago, with the view of removing it to another cemetery, and found the body petrifying.
