WEEKLY GAZETTE SATURDAY APRIL 7, 1853 Kleinigkeiten. The April schedule of the Pacific Coast Steamship Company is published today. The rainfall for the season is only 4 inches, and yet farmers anticipate very fair crops. We call attention to the reduced list of clothing and dry goods of which Mr. M. Dobner, proprietor of the Cash Store, has a fine assortment. Mr. Plez James, President of the Bank of Anaheim, has been conned to the house by sickness during the week. He is recovering, however, and will be at his post in a day or two. The pupils of the public schools through out the county will have a vacation all next week, as the Toller's institution will be in session in Los Angeles, and the attendance of teachers is compulsory. The Orange Base Ball Club will play a match game at Riverdale today with the club of that town. This is the third and deciding game, two having been played each club winning one. We observe that the rate of interest is steadily declining in Los Angeles. Among the loans recorded yesterday was one for $5000, three years at 8 per cent, and another of $6000, one year at 6 per cent, per annum. The card of Dr. C. Bardill is in our columns today. The doctor had an extensive and profitable practice in Colorado, but was forced to come here for reasons of health. The Mosquerade Ball. It is held by many that the true test of the success of any entertainment is to be gauged by the amount of surplus coin remaining in the treasury after the expenses have been paid. By this test, the masquerade ball of Friday week was an overwhelming success, as the surplus funds amounted to quite a respectable sum. Indeed, in every aspect the affair was creditable to the Order under whose auspices it was conducted, and it was evident that the participants enjoyed themselves for the first straggling hours of morning light found the dance still going on. Some of the costumes were extremely rich; many of them strikingly and familiarly original, and all of them showing great taste and invention. Following is a list of participants handed in for publication: Miss Mary Moosman, Swiss Shepherdess Miss Clara Moosman, Frost Miss Dora Zayn, Spanish lady Miss Kate Ward, Winter Miss G. B. Any who like to see the Bank's rose in its beauty may have a good opportunity by going through the drive in front of Mr. E. S. Saxton's residence, north of town, where, in heavy festoons, it hangs in snowy whiteness from the porch. Dr. James Ellis has received from the manufacturers at Detroit, Michigan, a very large assortment of drugs, and 25 which is a full supply of medicated lezenges. Medicine is robbed of half its ferrous when taken in the manner which Dr. Ellis is wont to prescribe. Mr. J. T. The Board of Town Trustees met in regular session on Wednesday. The resignation of George B. Snaffer, as Treasurer, in account of removal to Los Angeles was accepted, and Mr. Blez James of the Bank of Anaheim was appointed Treasurer pro tem. The Clerk was instructed to convey to Mr. Snaffer his appreciation of his services and their regret at the necessity which compelled a severance of their official relations. The communication of P. Davis & Broor an extension of the water main was referred to the committee on Public Improvements with instructions to extend the main with not less than two-inch pipe, provided the cost does not exceed $20. The Clerk was instructed to publish the election proclamation, and the following officers were appointed: John Hanna, Inspector; Frank Ky and J.W.Hartman, Judges. The salary of the engineer of the water works was fixed at $50 per month from April 1st to October 1st. The country is now passing through the period when a visitation of frost is to be dreaded. The most severe frosts experienced here occurred between the 6th and 13th county roads near Milton Haven Parkway. In the halls of Milton Haven Parkway there are at least six churches. He desires to say to the public that as he will keep the very best of meat, he expects to secure a share of the public patronage. While boring a well on McKelvey's place last week, Mr. James Stewart received a very severe hurt. By some means one of the handles of the windlass slipped, and the other revolving with fearful rapidity struck Stewart on the face. Part of the nose was almost torn away, and his face was otherwise severely bruised. He was confined to the house for ten days, but is now fairly over the hurt. April 26th is the sixty-fourth anniversary of the introduction of Odd Fellowship into the United States, and Anaheena Lodge contemplates a celebration of the event somewhat similar to the entertainment given last year. In this connection we may note that this Lodge, by the advice of the Grand Master, given during his recent visit, has reduced the initiation fee from $15 to $10, and the degree fees from $25 to $15. Misfortune came to the second egg manufactured by the ostriches. It was dropped in the night time and in the morning it was found broken, having been trampled on by the birds. As each egg is valued at $100, the loss is far from being a bagatelle. The ostrich farm is now permanently located on what is known as the Ellis place on Los Coyotes. If you want first-class photographs or tintypes wait for the McMillan Brothers of San Francisco. The Clerk was instructed to publish the election proclamation, and the following officers were appointed: John Hanna, Inspector; Frank Ey and J. W. Hartman, Judges. The salary of the engineer of the water works was fixed at $50 per month from April 1st to October 1st. The country is now passing through the period when a visitation of frost is to be dreaded. The most severe frosts experienced here have occurred between the 6th and 13th of April. We find, however, that the very general impression prevails that the fruit will escape damage from this cause this season. It is argued that frost has never occurred in April except during the full moon, and only during the dates mentioned, and as the moon will not be full until the 22d, the probabilities are that the weather will then be comparatively warm. We hope their faith is well founded, for we observe that the vineyardists have omitted the usual precaution of having ready piles of cuttings, etc., with which to make smoke upon the thermometer reaching freezing point. In the family of Jonathan Watson of Upper Santa Ana are three cases of malignant disphtheria, the afflicted ones being his children. Two of them were yesterday very low. Dr. Hardin, who is attending the sufferers, advises as a matter of precaution the cleaning and disinfection of onhouses, sinks, etc., and the removal of all decomposing matter, more especially potatoes, which are said to give off the germs of this terrible disease. The best disinfectant is copperas dissolved in warm water and scattered about the premises. Heavy rains in the mountains in San Bernardino have increased the volume of water in the river to an extent unknown for years. Notwithstanding that all the ditches are drawing water from the river to their utmost capacity, the water was yesterday morning flowing past Burruel Point, something which happens only during the height of the rainy season.
