"I've heard your affecting speech, Jack,' the detective went on, 'and it was really prime! Only one fault it had—the whole thing was one of your ingenious works of artful dodging.'
"Who are you?' now asked the amazed prisoner sharply scrutinizing the man behind him.
"Simply Edmund Darke, of Scotland Yard."
Rapine started and turned red and pale by turns, and finally broke out into a laugh and observed:
"Yes, Darke; I flatter myself I have 'done' the crowd, Judge, detective and all. So you admired it, eh?"
Immensely,' was the response; and then thief and thief-taker joined in a quiet laugh at the humbugged assemblage, who had heard every word between the two men, and gave vent to their vexation and chagrin by declaring that hanging was too good for such a blarated humbug.
Rapine, or Jack Romaine, his proper name, only laughed in the faces of his dupes, and good naturely kissed his hand to his Lordship on receiving his return."

Garfield on the Insanity Plea.
WASHINGTON, D. C., Feb. 6, 1871.
DEAR JUDGE: Allow me to congratulate you on your splendid charge to the jury at the close of the Galentine case. The whole country owes you a debt of gratitude for braving away the wicked absurdity which has lately been palmed off on the country as law on the subject of insanity. If the thing had gone much farther all that a man would need to secure immunity from murder would be to tear his hair and rave a little and then kill his man. I hope you will print your opinion in pamphlet form and send it broadcast to all the Judges in the land. Very truly yours,
J. A. GARFIELD.
Judge R. F. Payne, Cleveland, O.
A Chicago woman having ordered her servant to say that she was not at home, was so anxious to hear the voice of an old lover of hers who was talkin' with the servant in the hall that she leaned too far over the banister, lost her balance, fell to the bottom with a broken arm and leg. The gentleman and the servant picked her up, carried her to her room and the former lover had to go for the doctor. The next time she nos over her lover, she will do it more tenderly and carefully.
Alexander Creek of Demopolis, Ala., fell from a train and got up and walked 200 yards before he discovered that his neck was broken. Then he died. His strange display of vitality is supposed to be owing to the fact that somebody at the depot who saw him fall yelled, "Come here and I'll give you a drink."
Plain woman: How shall you be able to increase the attractiveness of your face and person without the use of cosmetics or other artificial means? Easy enough. Get invited on to Washington, and appear at one of the receptions there. The papers of the entire country will next day gloat over your ravishing beauty.

KENDALL'S SPAVIN CURE
The most successful Remedy ever discovered as it is certain in its effects and does not blister. READ PROOF BELOW.
Saved him 1,800 Dollars.
ADAMS, N.Y., Jan 30, 1882.
DR. R.J.KENDALL & Co., Gents Having used a good deal of your Kendall's Spavin Cure with great success, I thought I would let you know what it has done for me. Two years ago I had as speedy a colt as was ever raised in Jefferson County. When I was breaking him, he kicked over the cross bar and got fast and torpedo one of his hind legs all to pieces. I improved the best farriers, but they all said he was spoiled. He had a very large thorough pin, and I used two bottles of your Kendall's Spavin Cure, and it took the bunch entirely off, and he sold afterwards for $1,800 (dollars). I have used it for bone spavins and wood galls, and it has always cured completely and left the leg smooth.
It is a splendid medicine for rheumatism. I have recommended it to a good many, and they all say it does the work. I was in Witherington and Kneleland's drug store in Adams, the other day and saw a very fine picture you sent them. I tried to buy it, but couldn't; they said if I would write to you that you would send me one. I wish you would, and I will do you all the good lean.
Very respectfully,
R. S. Lyman
