This question is being constantly discussed among farmers and agricultural journals, without coming to any agreement, the majority, however, believing that they are more or less damaging. The operations of this industrious little animal in lawns and gardens, sometimes, are very considerable, giving the appearance of injury being done. We have our doubts, when all the facts are known, that any damage is committed. In their wanderings they are always in pursuit of the earthworms or other worms, on which they feed exclusively. If a mole should go through a hill of corn and injure it by loosening the rootlets it is still in pursuit of the earthworm, above the bolt that holds the door open is a weight supported by a wire connected with the wire holding the fusible link. This weight moves in guides and is wedge-shaped below. The threshold of the door should be of brick or stone to resist fire, and high enough to keep out water in case the room is flooded. From the reports and experiments it appears that such a door is thoroughly reliable, the soft metal link parting even in the heat of a fire in a building on the opposite side of the street, and allowing the weight to fall, pushing the bolt one side and permitting the door to close. Such wooden tin-covered doors and window shutters are reported to stand unharmed through severe trials when iron doors have failed, melted or warped under less exposure to fire. The door and automatic device for closing it are officially recommended by some of the leading fire insurance companies of this country. —Fireman's Journal. A Wonderful Discovery. For the speedy cure of Consumption and all diseases that lead to it, such as stubborn Coughs, neglected Colds, Bronchitis, Hay Fever, Asthma, pain in the side and chest, dry hacking cough, tickling in the throat, Hoarseness, Sore Throat, and all chronic or lingering diseases of the throat and lungs, Dr. King's New Discovery has no equal and has established for itself a world-wide reputation. Many leading physicians recommend it and use it in their practice. The formula from which it is prepared is highly recommended by all medical journals. The clergy and the press have complimented it in the most glowing terms. Go to your druggist and get a trial bottle free of cost, or a regular size for $1. For sale by all druggists. Bucklen's Arnica Salve. THE BEST SALVE in the world for Cuts Bruises, Sores, Ulcers, Salt Rheum, Fever Sores, Tetter, Chapped Hands, Chilblains, industrious little animal in lawns and gardens, sometimes, are very considerable, giving the appearance of injury being done. We have our doubts, when all the facts are known, that any damage is committed. In their wanderings they are always in pursuit of the earthworms or other worms, on which they feed exclusively. If a mole should go through a bill of corn and injure it by loosening the rootlets it is still in pursuit of the earthworm, which is in dry times found about the roots of corn and other vegetables, grass, etc., more abundantly than elsewhere. So far as our observations extend, we have never known the mole to eat vegetable matter. It would seem to be strictly a carnivorous animal. And on this head here is something to the point of a very practical character that cannot well be disposed of even against its usefulness: M. Weber, one of the savans of Zurich, Switzerland, recently examined the stomachs of a number of moles caught in different localities, but failed to discover therein the slightest vestige of plants or roots; but on the contrary, they were filled with the remains of earthworms. He shut up several of these animals in a box containing earth and sod with growing grass, and a small case of grubs and earthworms. In nine days two moles devoured 341 white-worms, 193 earthworms, 25 caterpillars and a dead mouse. Fed with a mixed diet of raw meat and vegetables, the moles ate the meat, but did not touch the plants; and when vegetables exclusively were dealt out to them, in twenty-four hours both died of starvation. We cannot conceive what better evidence is needed of the character and habits of the mole. When lawns show the presence of many moles, we may be sure that the injurious white-worm, which is very damaging to the sod, greatly abounds there, and the mole is the best agent to exterminate it. The Best Door to Stop Fire. A number of experiments have been made in this country to test the value of different materials for doors that may be exposed to fire, from which it appears that perhaps the best door yet devised is one made of wood Bucklen's Arnica Salve. More people have read The Sun during the year just now passing than ever before since it was first printed. No other newspaper published on this side of the earth has been bought and read in any year by so many men and women. We are credibly informed that people buy, read and like The Sun for the following reasons, among others. Because its news columns present in attractive form and with the greatest possible accuracy whatever has interest for humankind; the events, the deeds and misdeeds, the wisdom, the philosophy, the notable folly; the solid sense, the improving nonsense all the news of the busiest world at present resolving in space. Because people have learned that in its remarks concerning persons and affairs The Sun makes a practice of telling them the exact truth to the best of its ability three hundred and sixty-five days in the year; before election as well as after, about the whales as well as about the small fish, in the face of dissent as plainly and fearlessly as when supported by general approval. The Sun has absolutely no purposes to serve, save the information of its readers and the furtherance of the common good. Because it is everybody's newspaper. No man is so humble that The Sun is indifferent to his welfare and his rights. No man is so rich that it can allow injustice to be done him. No man, no association of men, is powerful enough to be exempt from the strict application of its principles of right and wrong. Because in politics it has fought for a dozen years without intermission and sometimes almost alone among newspapers; the fight that has resulted in the recent overwhelming popular verdict against Robe-somism and for honest government. No matter what party is in power, The Sun stands and will continue to stand like a rock for the interests of the people against the ambition of bosses, the encroachments of monopolists, and the dishonest schemes of public rebels. All this is what we are told almost daily by our friends. One man holds that The Sun is the best religious newspaper ever published, because its Christianity is undiluted with cant. Another holds that it is the best Republican newspaper printed, because it has already whipped half of the rascals out of that party, and is proceeding against the other half with undiminished vigor. A third believes it to be the best magazine of general literature in existence, because its readers miss nothing worthy of notice that is current in the world of thought. So every friend of The Sun discovers one of its many sides that appeals with particular force to the individual liking. If you already know The Sun, you will observe that in 1883 it is a little better than ever before. If you do not already know The Sun, you will find it to be a mirror of all human activity, a storehouse of the choicest products of common sense and imagination, a mainstay for the cause of honest government, a sentinel for genuine Jeffersonian Democracy, a source for wickedness of every species, and an uncommonly good investment for the ensuing year. Terms to Mail Subscribers. The several editions of The Sun are sent by mail postpaid, as follows: DAILY—55 cents a month, $6.50 a year; with Sunday edition, $7.70. SUNDAY—Eight pages, $1.20 a year. WEEKLY—$1 a year. Eight pages of the best matter of daily issues; an Agricultural Department of unequalled merit; market reports; and literary scientific; and domestic intelligence make The Weekly Sun the newspaper for the farmer's household. To clubs of ten with $10, an extra copy free. Address I.W. ENGLAND. Publisher, The Sun, N.Y.C. The Best Door to Stop Fire. A number of experiments have been made in this country to test the value of different materials for doors that may be exposed to fire, from which it appears that perhaps the best door yet devised is one made of wood and covered with tin. The door is formed of solid planks, or boards matched and fastened together and crossing at a right angle, or at forty-five degrees. There should not be less than two thicknesses in any door, and as many more should be used as the size of the opening to be closed demands. This solid wooden door is then to be completely covered on every side with tinned sheet-iron, all the joints being soldered as in making tin roofs. The tinned door is supported by hangers moving on an inclined rail or truck over the doorway, so that when free to move it will close by its own weight. At the door-jamb opposite the door, when it is open, should be a wooden casing covered on every side with tin, and into which the door will fit tightly when it closes, by moving on its track, the inside of the casing being wedge-shaped. The casing on the opposite side must fit the door closely so as to leave no cracks at the sides of the door. To keep the door open a small bolt is placed on the inside of the door-jamb, the pressure of the door keeping the bolt in position. On the under side of the arch or top of the door is a wire having a joint or link in the center, this link being soldered with fusible metal that will melt at one hundred and sixty degrees Fahrenheit.
