Butter.
Mr. Robert Hall, butter inspector in Ohio, says: "When butter is properly churned, both as to time and temperature, it becomes firm with very little working, and it is tenacious; but its most desirable state is waxy, when it is easily moulded into any shape, and may be drawn out a considerable length without breaking. It is then styled gilt-edged. It is only in this state that butter possesses that rich, nutty flavor and smell, and shows up a rich, golden-yellow color, which imparts so high a degree of pleasure in eating it, and which increases its value manifold. It is not always when it smells sweet."
OILING WAGON WHEELS.
Allan E. Smith reports to the Farmers' Review an experience in oiling wagon wheels and other woodwork:
"I have a wagon of which, six years ago, the felloes shrunk so the tires became loose. I gave it a good coat of hot oil, and every year since it has had a coat of oil or paint, sometimes both. The tires are tight yet, and they have not been set for eight or nine years. Many farmers think that as soon as wagon fellows begin to shrink they must go at once to a blacksmith shop and get the tires set. Instead of doing that, which is often a damage to the wheels, causing them to dish, if they will get some linseed oil and heat it boiling hot, and give the fellows all the oil they can take, it will fill them up to their usual size and tighten the tire. After the oil a coat of paint is a good thing to keep them from shrinking, and also to keep out the water. If you do not wish to go to the trouble of mixing paint, you can heat the oil and tie a rag to a stick and swab them over as long as they will take oil. A brush is more convenient to use, but a swab will answer if you do not wish to buy a brush. It is quite a saving of time and money to look after the woodwork of farm machinery. Alternate wetting and drying injures and causes the best wood soon to decay and lose its strength unless kept well painted. It pays to keep a little oil on hand, to oil fork handles, rakes, neckyokes, whiffle-trees, and any of the small tools on the farm that are more or less exposed."

It is only in this state that butter possesses that rich, nutty flavor and smell, and shows up a rich, golden-yellow color, which imparts so high a degree of pleasure in eating it, and which increases its value manifold. It is not always necessary, when it smells sweet, to taste butter in judging it. The smooth, unctious feeling, in rubbing a little between the finger and thumb, expresses at once its rich quality; the nutty smell and rich aroma indicate a similar taste, and the bright golden, glistening, cream colored surface shows its height of cleanliness. It may be necessary at times to use the tier, or even use it until you become an expert in testing by taste, smell and rubbing."
Plant Figs.
Let us urge the planting of figs in variety and plentifully in all homesteads in California where the fig will mature. Children seven years old can plant cuttings of fig trees that will bless them and the older members of their families bountifully when 10 and 12 years of age. It pains us to ride over one of God's most fruitful countries in the dry and thirsty season and find only one place in many where people have blessed themselves with tree of any kind. Thousands are shadeless and without fruit in our great valleys who can in three or five years have plenty of bearing fig trees by sticking a few cuttings in the ground this fall and taking a little pains only with these sources of healthy food. Plant fig trees!—[Rural Press.
The Congress that has been sitting in Saragossa, Spain, to discuss the best means of combating the phylloxera has been most interesting. The insect has caused extensive ravages in the north of Portugal and the provinces of Estramadura, Malaga and Catalona, in Spain, despite the severe legislation which enforces the isolation of infested vineyards, the destruction of tainted plants, and other precautions. A man was carrying a coon he had caught when he met three little boys in the road. All of them said excitingly and at once, "Mister, give me that coon, give me that coon, Mister?"
"Well, boys, I'll tell you what I will do. If you will tell me the party you belong to and why, I'll give it to the boy who gives the best reason for his faith." "I'm a Republican, because that party saved the Union," said one. "I'm a Greenbacker, because that party is in favor of plenty of money." When the time of the third boy came, he said: "I'm a Democrat, 'cause I want the coon."
So little is heard about the industries of Tennessee nowadays that most people will be surprised to learn that, while two years ago hardly a pound of dried fruit was shipped from Chattanooga, the dealers in that city alone have handled so far this year over 750,000 pounds. Knoxville and Nashville are going into the business extensively, and lesser places more modestly.
WHITE MOUNTAIN CAKE.—One cup of sugar, one-half cup of butter, one-half cup of sweet milk, one-half cup of corn starch, one cup of flour, the whites of six eggs, a little vanilla, two teaspoonsful of baking powder. Bake in layers. Frosting for above: Take the whites of five eggs, twenty tablespoons sifted sugar beaten very light; a little vanilla. Spread between layers and outside of cake.
TOMATO CATSUP.—Skin one peck of ripe tomatoes; put into a kettle and boil them, then strain through a sieve. Return to the kettle, take off the scum that rises, then add one teacup of brown sugar, one-third of a teacupful of salt, a dessertspoonful of
The Congress that has been sitting in Saragossa, Spain, to discuss the best means of combating the phylloxera has been most interesting. The insect has caused extensive ravages in the north of Portugal and the provinces of Estramadura, Malaga and Catalona, in Spain, despite the severe legislation which enforces the isolation of infested vineyards, the destruction of tainted plants, and other precautions. The opinion of the wine growers was divided on the question of American vines and on the remedies for the phylloxera. France, since the phylloxera has ravaged half of her vineyards, has imported since 1877 from 87,000,000 to 100,000,000 gallons of Spanish wines, chiefly for her own home consumption. She only exports to England a little over 7,000,000 gallons, and to the rest of Europe and America hardly three times that quantity.
Sure Cure for Corns.
A. C., who has tried it, is authority for the following: Take one-fourth cup of strong vinegar, crumb finely into it some bread. Let stand half an hour, or until it softens into a good poultice. Then apply, on retiring at night. In the morning the soreness will be gone, and the corn can be picked out. If the corn is a very obstinate one, it may require two or more applications to effect a cure.
Some graceless thief entered the Congregational Church at Santa Cruz the other night and carried off a green worsted table cover, a handsome vase, and an ebony flowerstand. He had made a comfortable bed on the floor by piling up pew-cushions, and left behind him a lot of cigarettes, part of a bottle of whiskey and a pile of colblastones the size of a man's hat.
Tomato Catsup.—Skin one peck of ripe tomatoes; put into a kettle and boil them, then strain through a sieve. Return to the kettle, take off the scum that rises, then add one tea-cup of brown sugar, one-third of a teacupful of salt, a dessertspoonful of cloves, the same of cayenne pepper, and cook till quite thick, then add one and a half pints of vinegar. Keep well stirred toward the last.
Tomato Toast.—Run a quart of stewed ripe tomatoes through a colander, place in a porcelain stew-pan, season with butter, pepper and salt and sugar to taste; cut slices of bread thin, brown on both sides, butter and lay on a platter, and just as the bell rings for tea on Sunday add a pint of good sweet cream to the stewed tomatoes, and pour them over the toast.

KENDALL'S SPAVIN CURE
The most successful accident ever discovered as it is certain in its effects and does not blister. READ PROOF BELOW.
Savad him 1,800 Dollars.
ADAMS, N.Y., Jan 30, 1882.
Dr. B. J KENDALL & Co., Center—Havinger used a good deal of your Kendall's Spavin Cure with great success. I thought I would let you know what it had done for me. Two years ago I had spelled a colt as was ever raised in Jefferson County. When I was breaking him, he kicked over the cross bar and got fast and tore one of his bindors all to pluck a. I employed the best farmer, but they all said he was spoiled. He had a very large thoroughpin, and used two bottles of your Kendall's Spavin Cure, and it took the bunch entirely off, and he sold afterwards for $1,800 (dollars). I have used it for bone splints and wind gels, and it has always cared empletely and left the leg smooth.
It is a splendid medicinal for gallstones. I have recommended it to go for many, and then all say it does the work. I was with Washington & Kendall's drag store in Adams, the other day and saw a very fine picture you sent them. I tried to buy it but could not; they said if I would write to you that you would send me one. I wish you would, and I will do you all the good lean.
