A LIVE QUESTION DISCUSSED.
San Jose, Oct. 5, 1882.
Editor Semi-Tropic:—I assume that you wish, in treating upon any subject which is important enough to be written up by you, to state facts; that you would not knowingly create a positively false impression and mislead your readers by assumptions which are totally without foundation. Believing this, I want to say a word in relation to the article in your October issue entitled "More Canneries Needed," which, by the way, is only one of numerous expressions of the same character. You actually advise the building of eleven new canneries in the two counties of Los Angeles and San Bernardino.
Now, sir, I happen to know that up to this time not one of those already built has ever made a dollar, and further, that only two in the entire State were able last year to keep even. "Build more canneries," "Plant more fruit," "No danger of over production," "We have the world for a market," this is the cry, and he who hints that over-production is possible, and that part of the canneries already in operation will inevitably go to the wall, is a croaker and a clog upon the development of our industries and resources. Please publish with your claims of the "world for a market" the fact that every country in Europe, except England, levies a duty upon imported canned fruits which is absolutely prohibitory; that Sydney is the only Colony in all Australia which receives them; that Hong Kong is the only city in China which takes them at all, and that South America, Central America and Mexico all rule them out by the high duties they exact.
Mr. Rose, I notice, tells your people frankly that the demand for California wines is fully supplied, and I beg to say to them just as positively, that the demand for California canned fruits is also fully met and more both will be gradually extend-
Therefore, fruit; be willing that will enclose dustry, and sifted. Impress now.

KENDALL'S SPAVIN CURE
The most successful Remedy ever discovered as it is certain in its effects and does not blister. READ PROOF BELOW.
Saved him 1,800 Dollars.
ADAMS, N. Y., Jan 30, 1882.
Dr. B. J. KENDALL & Co., Gents - Having used a good deal of your Kendall's Spavin Cure with great success, I thought I would let you know what it has done for me. Two years ago I had as speedy a colt as was ever raised in Jefferson County. When I was breaking him, he kicked over the cross bar and got fast and tore one of his hind legs all to pieces. I employed the best carriers, but they all said he was spoiled. He had a very large thorough-pin, and I used two bottles of your Kendall's Spavin Cure, and it took the bunch entirely off, and he sold afterwards for $1,800 (dollars). I have used it for some spavins and wind galls, and it has always cured completely and left the leg smooth.
It is a splendid medicine for rheumatism. I have recommended it to a good many, and they all say it does the work. I was in Witherington & Knockland's drag store, in Adams, the other day and saw a very fine picture you sent them. I tried to buy it, but could not; they said if I would write to you that you would send me one. I wish you would, and I will do you all the good I can.
Very respectfully, E. S. Lyman.
KENDALL'S SPAVIN CURE.
Mr. J. H. Barbour, Secretary and Superintendent of the San Jose Fruit Packing Co., takes occasion in this issue to review our article entitled "More Canneries Needed," published in our October number. With the greatest deference to Mr. Barbour's opinions and argument, we still hold that the only salvation of our fruit-growers will be found in the building of more canneries and in a generous introduction of family and community dryers. We speak from the standpoint of Southern California only, and although we have not had access to the books of the different canneries, from what we have learned directly and indirectly, we know that the canneries of Southern California are making money. If it were not so, why would they already take steps to build branch canneries in our different fruit settlements?
We understand that the Los Angeles cannery contracted its entire pack for this season some weeks ago. Would it contract so early in the season unless at satisfactory prices? It may be that the up-country canneries, owing to lively competition, have been paying prices for fruit which their profits would not justify. In some instances they have paid as high as four cents for some varieties of fruit. Suppose they obtained that fruit for two cents per pound instead of four, there would be a saving of three or four cents per can on the unpeeled and unpitted fruit and four to six cents on the peeled and pitted.
KENDALL'S SPAVIN CURE.
Price $1 per bottle, or 6 bottles for $5. All druggists have it or can get it for you, or it will be sent to any address on receipt of price by the proprietors, Dr. R.J. Kendall & Co., Knosburgh Falls, Vt. Send for illustrated circular.

Would it contract so early in the season unless at satisfactory prices? It may be that the up-country canneries, owing to lively competition, have been paying prices tor fruit which their profits would not justify. In some instances they have paid as high as four cents for some varieties of fruit. Suppose they obtained that fruit for two cents per pound instead of four, there would be a saving of three or four cents per can on the unpeeled and unpitted fruit and four to six cents on the peeled and pitted. Would not this item alone give a profit that would return a good investment on the capital?
Now, then, we think we see the grower frown; but hold your judgment, my friend, until we are through. Suppose a man has one hundred trees, judging from what we know of orchards generally throughout Southern California, he will have twenty varieties, five trees of each variety; probably two varieties, or ten trees, bear fruit suitable for canning; the other ninety trees are worthless. Of course, unless a large price is paid for the crop of those ten trees, the orchard will not be considered profitable.
Now, then, for the remedy: Dig up the ninety worthless trees and replace them with proper varieties, or attain that end by grafting. Then you have one hundred good bearing trees. We will put it low—one hundred pounds per tree, and at one cent per pound and a hundred trees to the acre, you have an income of one hundred dollars per acre.
Certainly there is not a fortune in this, but is there not a first-class living, and for an economical family something to lay by each year?
Again: Allow us to say that our estimates, if anything, are below the average. Many orchards in full bearing will yield two hundred pounds to the tree, and at one-and-a-half cents per pound—a price which the canneries can well afford to 'pay—you have an income of three hundred dollars per acre instead of one hundred.
Therefore, raise nothing but good fruit; be willing to sell it at a price that will encourage the canning industry, and all will be mutually benefited. Improve your fruit; do it now.
From "The Times"
Editor of Times:—In reading the last number of your paper, I noticed you asked all who had been benefited by the letter published in your valuable paper about a year ago, to write you the facts for publication. The letter from Dr. Bates created a great amount of excitement in this vicinity, as he is well and favorably known by everybody here. His reputation as a man and as a physician gave everybody the utmost confidence in all his statements, and this of course soon made the name "Kendall's Spavin Cure" not only familiar but very popular. In reply to your request, I will say: About nine years ago I shipped on the ice and sprained my right limb at the knee joint. I was very lame and suffered excruciating pain much of the time since, and some of the time thought I should be a cripple for life. Dr. Bates' letter printed in your paper gave me so much confidence in the virtues of Kendall's Spavin Cure that I tried it for my knee and less than one bottle completely cured me so that I have had no return of pain or lameness, for which, of course, I cannot feel too thankful. Since my recovery I have visited friends in the West and found that the following parties have used it with the grandest results in that part of the country: The Rev. John Rice, Hematite, Mo., used it on his own person for an injury of 25 years standing and performed one of the most wonderful cures I ever heard of. J. L. McClure of Strong City, Kansas, cured a badly lacerated and poisoned hand, from a hog bite and also removed an enlargement near the hip joint which had become large and troublesome. He also used it for pleurisy and found that bathing his chest with it relieved him at once. To my surprise I found that this wonderful remedy was better known in the West than it was in the East, and I found that they were using it there for animals as well as on human flesh with the very best of results, and I find so many cases wherever I go to confirm the favorable opinion I had already formed of it that I am glad of an opportunity of telling the readers of your valuable paper what I have learned in regard to it. Hoping to hear from others upon this very important subject, especially important to those who have suffered for years like myself, I remain,
Yours &c.,
J. A. Boyce.
