Considerable has been lately said in medical journals concerning the value of warm milk as a remedial agent in certain diseases. The Christian at Work, referring to an interesting article on this subject which later appeared in the London Milk Journal, states, on the authority of Dr. Benjamin Clarke, that in the East Indies warm milk is used to a great extent as a specific for diarrhoea. A pint every four hours will check the INDIAN STATISTICS. WASHINGTON, Oct. 21.—Commissioner Price of the Indian Bureau has transmitted to the Secretary of the Interior his report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1882. The Commissioner says that land has been opened to cultivation, houses for Indian residences built, schools opened and operated, and in many cases and in various ways the cause of Indian civilization has generally been advanced. The difficulty of procuring agents of the right stamp is regarded as one of the most important causes which operate to retard the improvement of the Indians. The co-operation of religious societies is regarded by the Commissioner as a very important auxiliary in the civilization of the Indian, and he points to the benefits derived from their work during the past few years. The present appropriations are regarded as entirely too small to compass the ends desired to be obtained within a reasonable time. The Commissioner says that if $1,000,000 for educational purposes is given now, it will save several millions in the future; that it would be wise economy to give a million at once, and not dole it out in such small sums, that they do but little good. The evils of cash annuities are commented upon, and an instance given where, after a cash payment to the Utes, $2,000 was spent for firearms, ammunition and whisky in Salt Lake Free c Considerable has been lately said in medical journals concerning the value of warm milk as a remedial agent in certain diseases. The Christian at Work, referring to an interesting article on this subject which laterly appeared in the London Milk Journal, states, on the authority of Dr. Benjamin Clarke, that in the East Indies warm milk is used to a great extent as a specific for diarrhoea. A pint every four hours will check the most violent diarrhoea, stomach-ache, incipient cholera, and dysentery. The milk should never be boiled, but only heated sufficiently to be agreeably warm, not too hot to drink. Milk which has been boiled is unfit for use. This writer gives several instances in arresting the disease, among which is the following: The writer says: "It has never failed in curing in six or twelve hours, and I have tried it, I should think, fifty times. I have also given it to a dying man who had been subject to dysentery eight months, latterly accompanied by one continued diarrhoea, and it acted on him like a charm. In two days his diarrhoea was gone; in three weeks he became a hale, hearty man; and now nothing that may hereafter occur will shake his faith in hot milk. A writer has also communicated to the Medical Times and Gazette a statement of the value of milk in twenty-six cases of typhoid fever, in every one of which its great value was apparent. It checks diarrhoea, and nourishes and cools the body. People suffering from diseases need food quite as much as those in health, and much more so in certain diseases where there is a rapid waste of the system. Frequently all ordinary food, in certain diseases, is rejected by the stomach, and even loathed by the patient; but nature, ever beneficent, has furnished food that in all diseases is beneficial—some directly curative. Such food is milk." The writer in the Journal just quoted Dr. Alexander Yale, after giving particular observations upon the point above mentioned, its action in checking diarrhoea, its nourishing properties, and its action in soothing the body, says: "We believe that milk nourishes in fever, promotes sleep, wards off delirium, soothes the intestines, and, in fine, is the sine qua non in treatment." The Commissioner says that if $1,000,000 for educational purposes is given now, it will save several millions in the future; that it would be wise economy to give a million at once, and not dole it out in such small sums, that they do but little good. The evils of cash annuities are commented upon, and an instance given where, after a cash payment to the Utes, $2,000 was spent for firearms, ammunition and whisky in Salt Lake City, and in a short time nine-tenths of the payment went in the same direction. The funds appropriated by Congress in the regular appropriation bill for the support of Indians proved entirely insufficient, mainly owing to the high price of beef and flour. The total number of Indians in the United States, exclusive of Alaska, is 262,366. The Commissioner comments in severe terms upon the iniquity of the liquor traffic among Indians, and quotes many instances of trouble arising from it. He recommends greater stringency in the laws on the subject and says that these sections in the statutes which allow armed forces to introduce drugs into the Indian country should be repealed. The report declares that there is an urgent necessity for additional legislation to prevent intrusion upon Indian lands. Exclusive of the five civilized tribes, the whole number of Indian pupils attending schools during the past year was 8,508. Of these 468 were in attendance at the Carlisle, Hampton and Forest Grove training schools. Of the remainder, 4,510 attended the reservation boarding schools, and 3,928 the reservation day schools. Industrial training for boys is carried on at the agency boarding schools, and is receiving more and more attention each year. In connection with the fifty-seven schools, 1,428 acres of land are under cultivation. Blacksmithing, tailoring and harness-making are taught at four schools, and seven teach shoe-making, ten carpentering, and fifteen the raising and care of stock. The training in these branches is greatly stimulated by the success of the experiments at Carlisle, Hampton and Forest Grove. An appropriation of not less than $50,000 should be made by Congress, at its next session, to properly equip the existing agency schools for industrial The writer in the Journal just quoted, Dr. Alexander Yale, after giving particular observations upon the point above mentioned, its action in checking diarrhoea, its nourishing properties, and its action in soothing the body, says: "We believe that milk nourishes in fever, promotes sleep, wards off delirium, soothes the intestines, and, in fine, is the sine qua non in typhoid fever." We have lately tested the value of milk in scarlet fever, and learn that it is now recommended by the medical faculty in all cases of this often very distressing children's disease. Give all the milk the patient will take, even during the period of greatest fever. It keeps up the strength of the patient, acts well upon the stomach, and is in this way a blessed thing in this sickness.—[Lancet. An Incubator for Infants. M. Tarnier, the surgeon of the Maternity Hospital in Paris, struck by the great mortality among infants prematurely born, and those which are very sickly after birth, has conceived the ingenious idea of constructing a box which is almost exactly similar to the incubators used for poultry. This box is divided into two compartments—the lower one being used as a reservoir for hot water, while the infant is placed in the upper one, which is well stuffed at the sides and fitted with a sliding glass cover. The temperature is maintained at 86° Fahren., and M. Tarnier has found that by keeping infants in the incubator for a period varying from two days to six weeks, their vitality is enormously improved. He has made experiments upon five six-months children, six seven-months, and thirteen eight-months children, and he has only lost two of them, whereas, according to his statement, three-fourths of them would have died but for this adventitious aid to vitality.—[Lancet.] A Gloomy Outlook. New York, Oct. 21.—A World's London cable special says: Although there has been a very fair harvest in this country generally, trade continues very stagnant in all the chief branches. Accounts from the iron and cotton districts are especially bad, and two rather heavy failures in Staffordshire are reported to-day. As is usually the case when trouble of this sort is going on several strikes are said to be in process of preparation among the coal miners. The strikes promise to make coal very dear throughout the winter. It was confidently supposed that the good crops, which have at last rewarded our long-suffering farmers, would restore activity to the manufacturing districts, but the people are beginning to see that there are other causes at work to England's disadvantage besides agricultural depression. The absence of encouraging signs in any direction will naturally increase Gladstone's difficulties in raising money that will be needed to defray the expenses incurred in the Egyptian war. It is now thought probable that he will increase the duty on tea, the consumption of which is growing so rapidly as to indicate that a large number of workingmen are giving up the use of gin. I employed the best carriers, but I never said he was swolled. He had a very large thorough-bin, and it used two boxes of your Kennedy's Spavin Cure, and it took the bus entirely off, and he sold afterwards for $1,800 (dollars). I have used it for home spa treatments and gills, and it has always curved completely like a smooth oil. Is a splendid medicine for rheumatism. I have recommended it to a good many, and they all say it does the work. I was in Washington & Kenedy's dorsalone in Adams, the other day and saw a very nice use you sent them.
