BRATHER MOIST.
The New York papers of Sept. 25th have elaborate descriptions of the heavy rainfall which deluged that city during the previous days. One of the papers says:
Between 11 o'clock Friday night and 7 o'clock Saturday morning 29-100 of an inch of rain fell in this city; between 7 A.M. and 3 P.M. on Saturday, 1 72-100 inches, and between 3 P.M. and 11 P.M., 4 16-100 inches.
For the twenty-four hours ending at 11 o'clock Saturday night 6 17-100 inches of rain descended upon the city. Between 11 o'clock on Wednesday night and 7 o'clock yesterday morning there was a rainfall of 9 46-100 inches.
Central Park was bright and green yesterday. The lakes were yellow with the freshet. Gangs of men were at work carting away earth and stones that had been washed down on the paths and under the bridges by the floods. The menagerie, which is in a hollow back of the arsenal, had served as a reservoir for the waters from all around it, the four-inch drain pipes being ridiculously insufficient. There was from 5½ to 6 feet of water in parts of the menagerie. It rose to the roof of the bear cages, pouring into the buildings in which the carnivorous and herbivorous animals are kept, and getting under and breaking up the asphalt flooring. Shortly after 6 P.M. on Saturday it was found necessary to remove all the animals in the herbivora building to save them from drowning. A bag with an iron ring in the neck of it was used. The bag was thrown over the head of the animal and twisted. Then the creature could be led or carried away. The operation requires some skill. The wolf, who is not herbivorous, got his head out of the bag and bit the operator, Thomas Donohoe, suddenly in the hand.
The vintage.
St. Helena (Napa Co.) Nov. 20.
The vintage, which has been progressing in this vicinity for the last three weeks, is satisfactory as to quantity, but to some extent unsatisfactory as to the saccharine strength of the grapes. Owing to the general cold weather which has prevailed for some time past, the grapes are ripening slowly, and in some of the valley vineyards, where the crop is very heavy, the amount of sugar is hardly sufficient at the present time to produce a good wine, either in strength or color. Indeed, the manufacturers have been compelled to stop picking in many of the vineyards for the reasons above stated. It is yet early, and a change may, and is confidently expected to take place before long. A few days of warm weather will improve in a wonderful degree the quality of the grapes. Growers are naturally impatient, but should be willing to wait a reasonable time and

A few days of warm weather will improve in a wonderful degree the quality of the grapes. Growers are naturally impatient, but should be willing to wait a reasonable time and give the manufacturers a chance to make a good marketable wine; thus, indirectly, insuring to themselves a certainty of good prices the coming year—remembering that their success is entirely dependent upon that of the manufacturer.
Those who know Macaulay by his writings only would not think of him as "a children's man." And yet he was essentially so. A child any time could entice him from his manuscript, and get him to show the pictures, or go and feed the sows. It is said that for hours at a time, he would live in a newspaper den personating a bear; or, transformed into an elephant, would go about on all fours, carrying as many children as could stick upon his back. Often, too, he would wander about the streets of London with some youthful companions, visiting museums and art galleries, ready to answer the many questions with which they plied him, and always sorry when the half holiday was over. For his little friends he wrote many nursery rhymes, and printed them in large capitals himself, so they might be able to read them, and in many other ways showed his devotion to them. In the heart of every good man there is a place for the children. Perhaps the continued freshness and vigor of Macaulay's writings is accounted for by his constant intercourse with those in the morning of life.

The Mississippi steamer R. E. Lee, while en route to Vicksburg, on Saturday, was burned and twenty-one lives were lost. At the time the alarm of fire was given the boat was under way. She was immediately headed for shore, and struck the bank in three or four minutes. William S. Perkins, who was in charge of the engines at the time of the disaster, stood nobly at his post until the boat necessary to remove all the animals in the herbivora building to save them from drowning. A bag with an iron ring in the neck of it was used. The bag was thrown over the head of the animal and twisted. Then the creature could be led or carried away. The operation requires some skill. The wolf, who is not herbivorous, got his head out of the bag and bit the operator, Thomas Donchoe, severely in the hand. There was two feet of water in the carnivora building, and the lions, tigers, jaguars, panthers and leopards became wildly excited, dashing about their cages and creating a mighty uproar. Shelves were fixed in the lower cages, on which the tasse, the crabbing raccoons, the shotten eavy, the continuum, the Albino racecons and the porcupinos found best. The kangaroos sat on their launches with just their heads above water, and looked the picture of misery. The water in the giraffe house reached the animals' knees, and threatened to carry away the building. The camels (five of which belong to Barram) the antelopes, the peccaries, the foxes, the rams, the deer, and the donkey had to be moved to higher ground. The donkey behaved in a manner unbecoming any respectable quadruped, and was finally carried off bodily by eight men, struggling and kicking like an angry child. Boards were put into the cages of the polar and black bears, but the water washed them out again, and the unfortunate brutes had to swim about all night. So did the African buffaloes and the seals. One of the seals, little more than a baby, became exhausted and was drowned. Two of the hawks, whose cage is uncovered, were killed by the violence of the rain.
Poultry on the Farm.
At the annual meeting of the American Agricultural Association, President Sprague, in his address, said the annual production of butter and eggs reached the enormous sum of 8500,000,000, or more than the wheat crop of the country. This result is almost entirely due to individual effort, so widely scattered that but little notice is taken of it, and it is only when the figures are given as a grand total that it attracts our attention. It is the small economies on the average farms that bring the best returns, and it has much thought and care were given to poultry breeding as to some of the large industries, so called, we can scarcely imagine the possibilities.
The introduction of coal oil into Eastern Asia has had one curious result. From time immemorial the Asiatic has economized the use of artificial light by going to bed early; but, the example of Europeans, and the introduction of biosensors have made a social revolution in the cities and towns along the coasts of China and Japan. The latter and higher illumination of the cities is advertising that Oriental private homes, such as special gardens in the evening.
Fresh meat, after beginning to sour, will sweepen if placed out of doors in the cool air over night.
The Mississippi steamer R. E. Lee, while en route to Vicksburg, on Saturday, was burned and twenty-one lives were lost. At the time the alarm of fire was given the boat was under way. She was immediately headed for shore, and struck the bank in three or four minutes. William S. Perkins, who was in charge of the engines at the time of the disaster, stood nobly at his post until the boat landed and Pilot Stout told him he could go. That more lives were not lost is due to the admirable courage of the pilot, John Stout. He stood at the wheel and gave hope to all by his firmness. As the steamer grounded at Yucatan Landing the flames were fast enveloping the brave man in the pilot-house, who, despite the fire around him, with almost the last hope of escape gone, remained at his post until he gave the word to the engineer at the boat had made the shore. Not until this was done did he for one minute take his hand from the wheel. He made his escape by the hurricane roof down the hog chain to the lower deck and from there ashore.
A white owl of Japan who is willing to rush of machinery wears four hair tied and twisted around its long shell back of the beak. Were this custom in this country we would throw down the pen and at once engage in the manufacture of shell hairpins.
