Woman is an idol that man worships, until he throws it down. Women love always; when earth slips from them they take refuge in heaven. The whisper of a beautiful woman can be heard further than the loudest call of duty. There is no torture a woman would not suffer to enhance her beauty. Of all things that man possesses, women alone take pleasure in being possessed. Before promising a woman to love only her, one should have seen them all, or should see only her. We meet in society many beautiful and attractive women whom we think The Yellow Fever. WASHINGTON, Sep. 2. Additional particulars from Brownsville to Dr. Hamilton, Supervising Surgeon-General of the Marine Hospital Service, show that about 50 per cent. of the population of the town are down with yellow fever. The precautions taken by Dr. Hamilton against the spread of the disease from Brownsville are almost perfect in character, and there is little fear of the progress of the epidemic beyond the limits of the four counties included in the outer cordon of the guards. The affected district includes the counties of Sesacia, with 3600 population, Starr, with 8300, Hidalgo, with 4300, and Cameron, in which Brownsville is situated, with 15,000. The cordon of guards protecting the outer world against immigrants from these counties is composed of 125 Texas rangers, stretched along the 124 miles of railway running between Corpus Christi and Laredo. The inner cordon is composed of a like guard, smaller in number, thrown around the northern and western sections of the city. Persons desiring to leave can go out into the district above spoken of and by having their baggage fumigated and their more contagious effects destroyed, can go beyond the cordon on the Corpus Christi and Laredo Railway. However, no person is allowed to go on this road, and to all intents and purposes it is a "dead line," and any persons attempting to cross the limits is liable to be shot down. On the innumerable wagon roads running from the railway into the district for distances of seven or eight miles is a well-armed relay of guards, whose duty it is to notify the outer cordon of the approach of per- A Worries. Pike's Toothbrute. HILL'S Hair or Brown, 50c. There is no torture a woman would not suffer to enhance her beauty. Of all things that man possesses, women alone take pleasure in being possessed. Before promising a woman to love only her, one should have seen them all, or should see only her. We meet in society many beautiful and attractive women whom we think would make excellent wives—for our friends. We censure the inconsistency of women when we are the victims; we find it charming when we are the objects. The highest mark of esteem a woman can give a man is to ask his friendship; and the most signal proof of her indifference is to offer him hers. At twenty, a man is less a lover of woman than of women; he is more in love with the sex than the individual, however charming she may be. Men are so fearful of wounding a woman's vanity that they rarely remember that she may by some possibility possess a grain of common sense. Woman among savages is a beast of burden; in Asia she is a piece of furniture; in Europe she is a spoiled child. It is not easy to be a widow; one must resume all the modesty of girlhood, without being allowed to reign its ignorance. Women of the world never use harsh expressions when condemning their rivals. Like the savage, they hurl elegant arrows, ornamented with feathers of purple and azure, but with poisoned points. The irrepressible Yankee is everywhere. For instance, at Bellegarde on the Valserine, near Nantua, France, the Rhone disappears under the calcareous rocks in a manner highly interesting to geologists. The Porte du Rhone has been not less interesting to artists by reason of the wild and picturesque beauty of the surrounding scenery. Now we learn that an American has been buying up all the land in the neighborhood of Bellegarde through which the cordon on the Corpus Christi and Laredo Railway. However, no person is allowed to go on this road, and to all intents and purposes it is a "dead line," and any persons attempting to cross the limits is liable to be shot down. On the innumerable wagon roads running from the railway into the district for distances of seven or eight miles is a well-armed relay of guards, whose duty it is to notify the outer cordon of the approach of persons from the infected district throughout the counties. An effort is being made to remove Collector Haynes because he fled from Brownsville at the approach of the yellow fever. Dried Fruit for Market. Kansas Farmer. All dried fruits sell principally by color, which should be bright, and to obtain the same in apples and peaches they should be prepared for drying before fully ripe. Sliced apples, if not bright, do not pay the trouble of slicing, and the finest qualities should be packed in new barrels, top and bottom lined with paper. Bright quartered apples, well colored, uniform in cut, are always more or less in fair demand, and more attention should be given to them. Peeled peaches should be sliced or cut in eighths, and invariably of a bright color. Dark qualities rule low, and are slow of sale. Unpeeled peaches should be selected for halves, size being a consideration in them, while the smaller fruit is fully as desirable to be cut for quarters. They should be kept entirely separate, as when mixed they will not generally sell at over the price of quarters. Blackberries should be particularly well dried, or they are liable to sweat or sour, and pack only in new barrels. Recently Capt. Burton, the traveller, reported that almost illimitable gold-can be obtained on the Gold Coast, Africa, a district which has been auriferously prolific for centuries. He says the region is equal to half a dozen Californias. In this he is supported by the English Commander Cameron, who investigated the Gold Coast in his company. Gold is found in the sea sand, in the dust where. Now we learn that an American has been buying up all the land in the neighborhood of Bellegarde through which the Rhone runs subterraneously, and that the river, by his ingenuity being diverted from its underground passage, is by means of a channel turned off into a new direction, where its power can be used for working any amount of machinery. A pious gentleman in Cincinnati, who devotes his time to searching the scriptures and predicting the end of the world, discovers some signs of very fearful import in the Egyptian war. According to this observer, we are at the threshold of the most stupendous and awful event of the world's history—"the closing of the gospel age by the descent of Christ into our air, and the ushering in of the dreadful judgment period on the nations of their sins. We just remember that at every great conflict of arms there have arisen prophets who were just as lugubrious, and even more so—in fact we are "getting used" to this Mother Shipton business. An English clergyman preached a sermon from the text: "We remember the garlic." It is spoken of as having been a strong sermon. Recently Capt. Barton, the traveller, reported that almost illimitable gold-can be obtained on the Gold Coast, Africa, a district which has been auriferously prolific for centuries. He says the region is equal to half a dozen Californias. In this he is supported by the English Commander Cameron, who investigated the Gold Coast in his company. Gold is found in the sea sand, in the dust of the roads, and in the mud walls of native huts. A subject of such importance has of course been widely discussed by experts in England, and by this time large numbers of prospectors are doubtless verifying matters on the spot. Notwithstanding all the difficulties that would confront gold miners in Africa—the insalubrious climate, the savage inhabitants, the hostility of the native rulers, and other obstacles equally as great—there is no doubt that when proof positive is obtained that a great gold deposit exists there all these difficulties will be overcome, and that white men and the capital and energy of civilization will flow thither to confront those of nature and barbarism. A gentleman, whose custom was to entertain very often a circle of friends, observing that one of them was in the habit of eating something before grace was asked, determined to cure him. Upon a repetition of the offense, he said: "For what we are about to receive, and for what James Taylor has already received, the Lord make us truly thankful." Solomon was the first man who proposed to divide the heir in the middle. A Wonderful Discovery. For the speedy cure of Consumption and all diseases that lead to it, such as stubborn Coughs, neglected Colds, Bronchitis, Hay Fever, Asthma, pain in the side and chest, dry hacking cough, tickling in the throat, Hoarseness, Sore Throat, and all chronic or lingering diseases of the throat and lungs. Dr. King's New Discovery has no equal and has established for itself a world-wide reputation. Many leading physicians recommend and use it in their practice. The formula from which it is prepared is highly recommended by all medical journals. The clergy and the press have complimented it in the most glowing terms. "My dear Rose," said Miss Mae Iver, where did you acquire that brilliant complexion? It seems to me that you are still a beautiful girl of eighteen whom I knew 20 years ago." There is nothing impossible to its powers as a beautifier." Beware of counterfeits. See that 'C. N. Crittenton, Proprietor,' is printed on each packet, without which none is genuine. Southall, M.D. Little Rock, Ark.: "I willingly bear testimony to the excellent food tonic effect of Colden's Liquid Beef Tonic, regarding it as a mild, unirritating and easily digested tonic well adapted to cases of chlorosis, nervousness and vascular debility, consequent upon the climateric period of women."
