An English lady, Miss Leigh, has for several years devoted herself to the welfare of what is known as "The Mission home and Christian Association for English and American Young Women in Paris." Her estimable character and indefatigable exertions have secured for her honorable recognition in her peculiar field of labor. She is a lady of intelligence, and is also a lady of the greatest humanity. An address delivered by her recently in London, at the residence of the Countess Somers, which was listened to by an audience composed chiefly of those of her own sex, has attracted some attention. The principal object of her discourse was to call attention to the hardships endured by English women—and American women, too—who had been lawfully married in the land of their nativity to French- Accidental Discoveries. Valuable discoveries have been made and valuable inventions suggested by the veriest accident. An alchemist, while seeking to discover a mixture of earths that would make the most durable crucibles, one day found that he had made porcelain. The power of lenses, as applied to the telescope, was discovered by a watchmaker's apprentice. While holding spectacle glasses between his thumb and finger he was startled at the suddenly enlarged appearance of a neighboring church spire. The art of etching upon glass was discovered by a Nuremburg glasscutter. By accident a few drops of aqua fortis fell upon his spectacles. He noticed that the glass corroded and softened where the acid touches it. That was hint enough. He drew figures upon the glass with varnish, applied the corroding fluid, then cut away the glass around the drawing. When the varnish was removed the figure appeared raised upon a dark ground. Mezzotinto owed his invention to the simple accident of the gun-barrel of a sentry becoming rusty with dew. The swaying of a chandelier in a cathedral suggested to Galileo the application of a pendulum. The art of lithographing was perfected through a suggestion made by accident. A poor musician was curious to know whether music could not be etched upon stone as well as upon copper. After he had prepared his slab his mother asked him to make a memorandum of such clothes as he proposed to send away to be washed. Not having pen, ink and paper convenient, he wrote the list on a stone, intending to make a copy at his leisure. A few days later, when about to clean the stone, he wondered what effect aqua fortis greatest humanity. An address delivered by her recently in London, at the residence of the Countess Somers, which was listened to by an audience composed chiefly of those of her own sex, has attracted some attention. The principal object of her discourse was to call attention to the hardships endured by English women—and American women, too—who had been lawfully married in the land of their nativity to Frenchmen, and who, on subsequently proceeding to France with their children, found themselves deserted and without redress. Miss Leigh declared that great numbers of such fortunates had come to the Mission Home, some in good circumstances, but many more in a deplorable condition after their desertion. They had no redress in France, inasmuch as foreign marriage laws, which apply to French subjects, have no validity in that country. Two members of Parliament, who were present at the lecture, suggested a petition to Parliament on the subject, although what influence such a petition would have on French legislation is not seen. The laws of France—even of Republican France—on the matrimonial question, are laid down explicitly and with great elaboration in the Code Napoleon. So high is that Code of jurisprudence held in France, that no Frenchman, however ardent a Republican, would justify a serious interference with it. Article One Hundred and Seventy of it declares that a marriage contracted in a foreign country between French subjects, or between a French subject on the one hand and a foreigner on the other, shall be valid, providing that it shall have been celebrated in accordance with the forms in use in the foreign country in question, and provided, also, that it has been preceded by the publications prescribed in Article Sixty-three, etc. Now, Article Sixty-three directs that, prior to the celebration of any marriage in France, the Mayor of the arrondissement, or commune, where the celebration is to take place, shall make two publications of the intended event, and that the domicile of at least one of the parties to the marriage shall be in such arrondissement or commune. curious to know whether music could not be etched upon stone as well as upon copper. After he had prepared his slab his mother asked him to make a memorandum of such clothes as he proposed to send away to be washed. Not having pen, ink and paper convenient, he wrote the list on a stone, intending to make a copy at his leisure. A few days later, when about to clean the stone, he wondered what effect aqua fortis would have upon it. He applied the acid, and in a few minutes saw the writing standing out in full relief. The next step was simply to ink the stone and take off an impression. The composition of which printing rollers are made was discovered by a Salopian printer.—[Age of Steel. Cured by Faith. Troy, N. Y., August 4th—Mrs. C. M. Dutcher, a widow, living on Ida Hill, in this city, announces that she has been entirely cured of a disease of nineteen years' standing by means of prayers offered in her behalf. Mrs. Dutcher came to this city from Glen's Falls about six months ago, at which time she was a confirmed invalid, and a physician pronounced her disease incurable. A short time ago she read an account of a Vermont woman having been cured by prayer, and at once determined to try the experiment. She says she had the most implicit faith in the result. The pastor of her own church being absent, she consulted the pastor of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, and he, while not encouraging her expectations, consented to offer prayers for her recovery. At her request the congregation of the church prayed for the object desired. The next day Mrs. Dutcher says she experienced the first relief in years, and in three days her cure was complete. Her disease was a complicated affection of the spine, and particularly painful just prior to her recovery. Mrs. Dutcher is an attendant at Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church and her belief in the cure by faith and prayer is unquestioned.—[N. Y. World. While the great mass of the Austrian people, including nearly all who provided, also, that it has been preceded by the publications prescribed in Article Sixty-three, etc. Now, Article Sixty-three directs that, prior to the celebration of any marriage in France, the Mayor of the arrondissement or commune, where the celebration is to take place, shall make two publications of the intended event, and that the domicile of at least one of the parties to the marriage shall be in such arrondissement or commune. The marriage under the Code is simply a civil contract with no reference to a religious sacrament. There must be four witnesses to it, but no nuptial benediction is required. But when a young American or English lady, in her own country, marries a Frenchman, it behooves her to look to it that her marriage will be recognized as valid in the country of her husband; and Miss Leigh is doing good service in calling attention to the subject. Marriages such as she alludes to can be legalized through the intervention of a French Embassadorial or Consular stamp. With that the bridegroom may lawfully marry the lady of his choice in a foreign land. Without it, the lady should be on her guard. On Saturday Mrs. Mary Petch, while driving along the highway with her son, in Yamhill county, Oregon, was shot in the back and instantly killed. Deceased had a difficulty some time ago with a neighbor named Smith, who is accused of the deed. A few weeks since Mrs. Petch was shot at by a concealed party, but missed. While the great mass of the Austrian people, including nearly all who are in authority, view with aversion any attempt to arouse an agitation against the Jews similar to that which disgraced Germany for a time, there are individuals, some inspired by personal animosities, some by motives of interest, with whom the creation of such a movement is a constant object of desire and effort. They figure and labor in different cities and provinces in Austria proper, in Hungary, Bohemia and Galicia. The Emperor has often expressed his determination to prevent any such agitation, and the Crown Prince has often spoken very warmly in favor of the Jewish subjects of the empire. Now the assembled Bishops of the empire have decided to take action, and an official message has been issued by them to all the clergy in their respective dioceses, prohibiting in stringent terms and under severe penalties from lending their aid in any way in stirring up anti-Semitic feeling and prejudice. This step is likely to have a decisive effect. Tucson, August 21.—The stage going into Globe yesterday was jumped by road agents, and Andy Hall, the messenger, was killed. The treasure box, with over five thousand dollars, was taken. FIRE Insurance Agency.
