MILLET.
8. B. Smith in Semi-Tropic California.
In the May number of the Semi-Tropic you printed an article from the pen and catalogue of W. A. Sanders, Sanders, Cal., relating to a new variety of Millet called by him "Evergreen Millet." I mailed a copy of your paper containing the article to the owner of Costa Ranch [near Anaheim]—Mr. Kenyon Cox, of New York City—and he became much interested in this description of Mr. Sanders' Millet, and ordered me to procure ten pounds of the seed and sow it upon the ranch. But, like many others who ordered seed of Mr. Sanders at that time, I was disappointed in not getting it, as there was such a demand for it that Mr. Sanders' supply was soon exhausted. He, however, promised to fill my order this month with seed from the first cutting of this year's to try on the ranch, only you must have a lot of stock ready to put on when you sow it, and a fresh lot ready to take the places of the first when they get tired out with chewing, for you see they will have to chew for dear life, for if they stop, they will be lifted up with the dense growth. There, I think that will beat your California story about Evergreen Millet. Yet the statements are every one true—vouched for by a man of well-known reliability."
Now, Mr. Editor, I have written this to you for publication, because I have reason to believe that these two Millets have done all that is claimed for them, but it is a question, in my mind, if they would continue that way for a term of years, although they are called "Evergreen."
We all know that alfalfa is a most valuable forage plant here, yet it needs a great deal of water, and it does often kill stock by causing them to bloat. Now, the growers of these Millets claim that it will never bloat stock, that no drouth effects it after it is once rooted, and that it is a much superior forage plant to alfalfa.
Now, I may be a little dull of comprehension, but I am free to confess that I cannot see how so many tons of green feed can be grown per acre on ordinary land, unless it is irrigated with all the water the plant can take up. But we, here in Southern California, want a forage plant that will grow without any irrigation. Right here upon Costa Ranch, and upon hundreds, if not thousands of acres all about it, lie some of the most fertile of soils on which the "Fox-tail Grass" has crowded out nearly everything else. On these lands the water is from five to twelve feet from the surface of the ground. These Millet growers claim that the roots of their Millet will invariably run down to the surface water, and that they will also crowd out every other kind of vegetation. If their statements are correct, these Millets are what we want, and we do not ask for ninety-five tons of feed to the acre each year. We will be satisfied with one-tenth of that amount. I know that I am not alone in desiring to know more particularly about these Millets.
Put it to Dr. King's Nest Consumption will position Bronchitis, Stubborn Colicie, Quinsy, Hoarseness, tion of the throat and lute your existence give this trial by calling on any Denton, Proprietor," said Prof. James A. Sewall.
Of the Medical Faculty, Quebec, states: "I have LIQUID BEER TONIC paired advanced stages of Constipation Dyspepsia and all Nervous pregnant women it has been every other article of food can recommend it as coarse and easy of digestion." The name, Colden's—take no gists.

Commission
interested in this description of Mr. He, however, promised to fill my order this month with seed from the first cutting of this year's crop.
This delay in purchasing seed caused Mr. Cox to investigate more extensively the subject of Millets, and I will give you an extract from one of his letters to me on the subject. He says:
"In my perambulations and enquiries among the seedsmen here, I found a Millet that surpasses the Evergreen variety all out of sight. The seedsman who has it (one of the most reliable in New York), experimented with it himself, and tells me that here in New Jersey soil and climate he obtained the following results: He sowed the seed on the 10th of May, in drills 18 inches apart, at the rate of four pounds to the acre. In twelve days the plants were up so that he ran a cultivator between the rows, after which no cultivation was necessary or possible, for the growth was astonishing, and crowded down every weed and other vegetation. The first cutting was made on the first of July, just 45 days after sowing; it was then seven feet high, covering the whole ground, having filled up the spaces between the drill rows, and the crop, cut three inches above the ground, weighed in the green state thirty tons to the acre. This, when dried, gave six and one-half tons of hay to the acre. After this cutting the second growth started, and was cut again on the 15th of August—just 45 days after the first cutting. Its height was then nine feet, and weighed in the green state fifty-five tons to the acre, and when dried, eight tons of hay to the acre. The third crop started as rapidly as the second, but the cool nights of September lessened its tropical luxuriance, so that this crop, which was cut on the first of October, only weighed ten tons to the acre in the green state, and one and one-half tons when dried into hay—making it thicker."
Information for Young Ladies.
The latest craze is the hat flirtation. The following is the code: Wearing the hat squarely on the head, I love you madly; tipping it over the right ear, my little brother has the measles; pulling it over the eyes, you must not recognize me; wearing it on the back of the head, ta! taking it off and brushing it the wrong way, my heart is busted; holding it out in the right hand, lend me a quarter; leaving it with your uncle; I have been to a church fair; throwing it at a police man; I love your sister; using it as a fan, come and see my aunt; carrying a brick in it, your cruelty is killing me; kicking it up stairs, is the old man around; kicking it down stairs, where is your mother; kicking it across the street, I am engaged; hanging it on the right elbow, will call to-night; hanging it on the left elbow, am badly left; putting it on the ground and sitting on it, farewell forever.
Columbus, Ohio, August 4th.—Corning, Perry county, was overwhelmed by a waterspout yesterday. Business and dwelling houses were swept away, and the people rescued with great difficulty. Miles of railroad track was washed away, loaded coal cars carried off in the flood, and the telegraph wires prostrated. The loss to citizens is estimated at $100,-000. Much damage is reported from
ter the first cutting. Its height was then nine feet, and weighed in the green state fifty-five tons to the acre, and when dried, eight tons of hay to the acre. The third crop started as rapidly as the second, but the cool nights of September lessened its tropical luxuriance, so that this crop, which was cut on the first of October, only weighed ten tons to the acre in the green state, and one and one-half tons when dried into hay—making in 135 days an aggregate weight of 95 tons of green fodder, or 16 tons of dried hay to the acre. He further says that all his horses and cattle ate it greedily in both the green and dried state, and it seemed in every way an excellent feed for them."
Mr. Cox then goes on to make a few humorous comments as follows:
"Just think of this rapid growth, between the first of July and fifteenth of August, nine feet—nearly two and one-half inches every 24 hours. If this made such a wonderful growth in this climate, what would it do in Southern California? The only thing that would bother us, if we should plant a ten or twenty acre plot would be to dispose of it. It could not be allowed to lie where it was cut till dried, for it would kill the growth below, and it would be too laborious to pay to cart off that amount of green fodder and spread it out for drying. The only way I can think of, is to stock your fields so thickly with cattle that they can keep it eaten down; but how many cattle would it require to the acre to eat off two and one-half inches all over it every 24 hours?
Why, the cattle might lie down at night, and on rising in the morning find that just where they had been eating the night before there was an inch of fresh, new-grown feed. I think I will send you a lot of the seed Columbus, Ohio, August 4th. Corning, Perry county, was overwhelmed by a waterspout yesterday. Business and dwelling houses were swept away, and the people rescued with great difficulty. Miles of railroad track was washed away, loaded coal cars carried off in the flood, and the telegraph wires prostrated. The loss to citizens is estimated at $100,-000. Much damage is reported from other points.
In Placerville, recently, the practice of hazing has been indulged in by members of the Olympic Club, and the other day some of them held a boy under a faucet and turned a stream of cold water upon the back of his neck until he was thrown into convulsions. Medical assistance was called, but before an hour or two his life was despaired of.
The number of signatures to a Shasta petition to remove the county seat to Redding is more than two-thirds of the vote polled at the last election.
Alfred Parsons of Woodbridge, aged ten, fell twenty feet from a windmill top, the other day, and was terribly hurt, though he may perhaps recover.
A five-year-old boy named Squires was run over by a grain-loaded team, in Modesto, and killed.
Armand Colman (colored) was hanged Friday at West Point, Miss., for the murder of George Bright, May 14, 1890."
Put it to Proof.
At a time when the community is flooded with so many unworthy devices and concoctions, it is refreshing to find one that is beneficial and pure. So conscious are the proprietors of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, of the worth of their remedy, that they offer all who desire a trial bottle free of charge. This certainly would be disastrous to them did not the remedy possess the remarkable curative qualities claimed. Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption will positively cure Asthma, Bronchitis, Stubborn Congha, Colda, Phthisie, Quinsy, Hoarseness, Croup, or any affection of the throat and lungs. As you value your existence give this wonderful remedy a trial by calling on any Druggist and obtaining a trial bottle free of cost, or a regular size bottle for $1.00.
A Tilt with Time.
Ladies in their attempts to baffle old Time are bound to receive some wounds in the encounter. These, however, they can conceal, as far as the complexion is concerned, by a timely and regular resort to the use of "GLENN'S SULPHUR SOAP." Without obstructing the pores, or in any way injuring the health of the skin, it removes from the surface pimples, redness and the various disfigurements caused by increasing age or exposure to the sun. See that "C. N. CRITTENTON, Proprietor," is printed on each packet, without which none is genuine. Sold by druggists and fancy goods dealers.
Prof. James A. Sewell, A.M., M.D.
Of the Medical Faculty, Laval University, Quebec, states: "I have found Colden's Liquid Beef Tonic particularly useful in advanced stages of Consumption, Weakness, Dyspepsia and all Nervous Affections. In pregnant women it has been retained while every other article of food was rejected. I can recommend it as convenient, palatable, and easy of digestion." (Remember the name, Colden's; take no other.) Of druggists.
