We have no knowledge of the efficacy of the remedies below, found floating through the press, but give them for what they are worth: Try popcorn for nausea. Try cranberries for malaria. Try a sun-bath for rheumatism. Try clam broth for a weak stomach. Try cranberry poultice for erysipelas. Try gargling lager beer for cure of sore throat. Try a wet towel to the back of the neck when sleepless. Try eating fresh radishes and yellow turnips for gravel. Try eating onions and horseradishes to relieve dropsical swelling. Try buttermilk for removal of freckles, tan and butternut stains. Try to cultivate an equable temper, and don't borrow trouble ahead. SHEEP IN CALIFORNIA. According to the last census report California leads all the other States in the number of sheep owned within her borders. The number of sheep credited to our State is 4,152,349, while the whole number of sheep in the United States is 35,191,656, giving to California a little less than one-ninth of all the sheep in the whole country. Considering that but very few farmers have introduced the sheep on to their farms as a part of the stock on the same, we make a very good showing in numbers. If there is any defect in the California system of general farming this lack of sheep on the farm is one of them. The number of sheep in the State could be increased 50 percent without increasing the number in the present flocks, and without curtailing the feed on the ranges occupied by these flocks. We have no doubt that the grain farmers burn straw enough every year to winter in good condition half as many sheep as are now owned in the State. The summer-fallows that now go without being fed off during the summer months would go a long way towards keeping this number of sheep in condition during the summer, and thus the California farmers annually waste in straw and feed an amount representing nearly half the annual profits on sheep in the State. In other words, if the general grain farmers would introduce sheep on their farms, as the farmers of New York, Ohio, Illinois and other farming States of the Mississippi valley and Atlantic slope have done, the number of sheep in the State could be increased 50 per cent. with but a very little additional cost for keeping, and the net income from this class of stock would be considerably higher. Of all classes of free of charge livestock, cattle and horses are bound to receive an encounter. These, however, can be timely and regular "GLENN'S SULPHUR SYSTEM" constructing the pores, or on the health of the skin, surface pimples, redness figures caused by exposure to the sun. Seventy percent, Proprietor," packet, without which Sold by druggists and. Prof. James A. Scott Of the Medical Faculty, Quebec, states: "I LIQUID BEER TONIC advanced stages of Colony Dyspepsia and all Nervous pregnant women it has every other article of it can recommend it as one and easy of digestion name, COLDEN'S—take digsia. Heartily Rozen Don't condemn a goose have been deceived by Parker's Ginger Tonics this section of nervous recommendation it heartily Neices. Bucklen's Acre THE BEST SALVE I BRUSES, SORES, ULCERSORES, TETTER, CHAPPED CORNS and all kinds of Salve is guaranteed to tion in every case or not 25 cents per box. The Highland Made from harmless ed to the needs of faeces. Try the croup tippet when a child is likely to be troubled that way. Try a cloth wrung out of cold water put about the neck at night for sore throat. Try snuffing powdered borax up the nostrils for catarrahal "cold in the head." Try an extra pair of stockings outside of your shoes when traveling in cold weather. Try walking with your hands behind you if you find yourself becoming bent forward. Try a silk handkerchief over the face when obliged to go against a cold, piercing wind. Try a hot dry flannel over the seat of neuralgic pain and renew frequently. Try taking your codliver oil in tomato catsup, if you want to make it palatable. Try hard eider—a wineglass three times a day—for ague and rheumatism. Try breathing the fumes of turpentine or carbolic acid to relieve whooping-cough. Try taking a nap in the afternoon if you are going to be out late in the evening. Try planting sunflowers in your garden if compelled to live in a malarial neighborhood. Try a saturated solution of bicarbonate of soda—baking soda—in diarrhoeal troubles. Give freely. Try a newspaper over the chest, beneath your coat, as a chest protector in extremely cold weather. A Chicago Romance. "Pull up your pants, papa." Aristides McGuire heard those words as they came from the ruby-red lips of Gwendolen Mahaffy and floated to his ears on the softly sighing and sentimentally harted sheep in the State. In other words, if the general grain farmers would introduce sheep on their farms, as the farmers of New York, Ohio, Illinois and other farming States of the Mississippi valley and Atlantic slope have done, the number of sheep in the State could be increased 50 per cent. with but a very little additional cost for keeping, and the net income from this class of stock would be nearly doubled. Of all classes of stock, sheep are the easiest fed from the waste-growth of the farm. No other domestic animal is so emphatically a weed-destroyer as the sheep, and no other can be so easily worked in with grain raising. None comes so handy in the way of supplying the table of the farmer at all seasons of the year with fresh meat. The straw that is burned annually in the State, if turned into wool and mutton, would add no inconsiderable sum to the aggregate of our agricultural incomes. For general farm use it may be that the long and medium wooled sheep would be preferable to the pure merinos. The pure Southdowns and their crosses are preferred on the farms in the Atlantic States and England on account of the earlier maturity and natural fatting qualities of the lambs. Under the present system of sheep keeping in the State, exclusively in large bands on extensive ranges, we have annually a time in the spring of the year when mutton is poor and high priced. In fact, we have no early lambs, or comparatively none, in our markets; but at the time when the English people and the people of the Eastern States are enjoying their fresh, fat lamb and mint sauce, we are eating poor and tough mutton. There is money in sheep on the old farm plan for the farmers that will introduce this plan and follow it up systematically. Good fat lambs in April, May and June would sell for more than old mutton sheep bring now at that time of the year. LAREDO, July 29.—Advices from Matamoras, Mexico, says that yellow fever is rapidly spreading and black vomit accompanies it. There have been a number of deaths in the past four days, and the disease is regarded as epidemic. A Colonel, late of the A Chicago Romance. "Pull up your pants, papa." Aristides McGuire heard those words as they came from the ruby-red lips of Gwendolen Mahaffy and floated to his ears on the softly sighing and sepsuous breezes of a June evening. He looked, and saw the pretty and shapely ankles of Gwendolen as she picked her way carefully along the muddy sidewalk. He noted the tenderly solicitous tones in which she addressed her father, and that tone thrilled his very blood. Weis beer would have done it, but Aristides was not so fly as he might have been. Scarcely knowing why he did so, the young man followed the girl and her father until finally they turned up Ogden avenue, and, as Gwendolen headed southwest and stood for an instant with her polonaise fluttering in the wind, she turned to her companion and said: "Ours' is next to the last house on the street, isn't it, papa?" "Yes, my darling," replied the old man. "How long is this street?" asked Aristodes of a policeman. "Five miles." The young man entered a neighboring saloon and sat down with a dull thud. "I love her madly," he said, "but heaven help me, I am not Charles Rowell." —[Chicago Tribune] He who would eat the kernel must crack the nut. LAREDO, July 29.—Advices from Matamoras, Mexico, says that yellow fever is rapidly spreading and black vomit accompanies it. There have been a number of deaths in the past four days, and the disease is regarded as epidemic. A Colonel, late of the Mexican regular army, lost his wife and daughter, and now is dying himself. Brownsville and Matamoras have been quarantined against the lower Rio Grande towns, and consternation exists throughout the States of Tamaulipas and Nueva Leon, Mexico. The news received here yesterday was disbelieved, but the coast cities will be quarantined against the epidemic at once. Ships have been freely plying between Matamoras and other gulf towns. A dispatch from Austin confirms the news above given, and says the State health officer there has notified New Orleans of his action, and will picket the Rio Grande with Rangers if necessary. NEW YORK, July 29.—The appalling mortality of the past week, 1,217, is the largest in ten years. To-day the deaths were 218. One-third of the victims were infants, dying of cholera infantum. There were eight sunstrokes and eleven deaths from heat to-day. There were five sunstrokes in Brooklyn. It is raining now. The thermometer is 84. Free of Cost. Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds, Asthma, Bronchitis, etc., is given away in trial bottles free of cost to the affected. If you have a severe cough, cold, difficulty of breathing, hoarseness or any affection of the throat or lungs by all means give this wonderful remedy a trial. As you value your existence you cannot afford to let this opportunity pass. We could not afford, and would not give this remedy away unless we knew it would accomplish what we claim for it. Thousands of hopeless cases have already been completely cured by it. There is no medicine in the world that will cure one-half the cases that Dr. King's New Discovery will cure. For sale by all druggists. A Tilt with Time. Ladies in their attempts to baffle old Time are bound to receive some wonders in the encounter. These, however, they can conceal, as far as the complexion is concerned, by a timely and regular resort to the use of "Glenn's Sulphur Soap." Without obstructing the pores, or in any way injuring the health of the skin, it removes from the surface pimples, redness and the various disfigurements caused by increasing age or exposure to the sun. See that "C. N. Crittenton," Proprietor," is printed on each packet, without which none is gennine. Sold by druggists and fancy goods dealers. Prof. James A. Sewell, A. M., M.D. Of the Medical Faculty, Laval University, Quebec, states: "I have found Colden's Liquid Beer Tonic particularly useful in advanced stages of Consumption, Weakness, Dyspepsia and all Nervous Affections. In pregnant women it has been retained while every other article of food was rejected. I can recommend it as convenient, palatable, and easy of digestion." (Remember the name, Colden's—take no other.) Of druggists. Heartily Recommended. Don't condemn a good thing because you have been deceived by worthless nostrums. Parker's Ginger Tonic has cured many in this section of nervous disorders, and we recommend it heartily to such sufferers. Bucklen's Arnica Salve.
