Advertisements must reach this office not later than Friday morning in order to insure their appearance on the day following. Brief communications on current topics are respectfully solicited from all parts of the county. A FEW GOOD RECIPES. Onion Sauce.—Peel four white onions, boil them soft, drain and chop them up fine, mix them with a cupful of milk, two teaspoonsful of butter, a teaspoon of flour, salt and pepper, then boil all together. Serve hot. Tapioca Cup Pudding.—This is light and delicate for invalids. An even tablespoonful of tapioca soaked for two hours in nearly a cup of new milk, stir into this the yolk of a fresh egg, a little sugar, salt. Bake in a cup fifteen minutes. Tapioca Cream.—Soak three large tablespoonsfuls of tapioca over night in one pint of water; the next morning add one quart of milk and boil; a little salt, yolks of four eggs, one cup of sugar, flavor with lemon or vanilla, beat whites of eggs to a stiff froth and brown in shape of eggs. Put on top of pudding when it is cool. Business Letters. All business letters, as a rule, demand some kind of an answer, especially those containing money. To neglect the reply to a letter is an insult, unless the letter failed to contain a stamp. In your reply first acknowledge the receipt of the letter, then the receipt of the money, whatever it is. Letters asking for money or the payment of a bill, may be postponed from time to time if necessary. No man should reply to such a letter while angry. If the amount is small and you are moderately hot, wait two days. If the sum is quite large and you are tempted to write an insulting letter, wait two weeks or until you have thoroughly cooled down. Business letters should be written on plain, neat paper, with your name and business neatly printed at the top. Letters from railroad companies referring to important improvements, etc., should contain a pass, not for publication, but as a guarantee for good faith. Neat and beautiful penmanship is very desirable in business correspondence, but it is most important that you should not spell God with a little g or codfish with a k. Ornamental penmanship is good, but it will not take the cuss off if you don't know how to spell. Read your letter over carefully after you have written it, if you can; if not, send it with an apology about the rush of business. In ordering goods state whether you will remit soon, or whether the account should be placed in the refrigerator.—[Bill Nye. The Word of a Khan. milk, stir into this the yolk of a fresh egg, a little sugar, salt. Boston Corn Bread.—Two cupfuls Indian meal, one of flour, three eggs, one tablespoonful of butter, two tablespoons of sugar, one tablespoonful of salt. Beat thoroughly, melt the butter and put in the milk. Two teaspoons of baking powder sifted with the Indian meal and flout. Beat the whole thoroughly. Bake in a hot oven. Veal Omelet.—Take two pounds of veal chopped fine, three eggs well beaten, three or four butter crackers rolled fine, two tablespoons of milk, one teaspoon of salt, a little cayenne pepper, one tablespoonful of powdered sage; mix all well together, add bits of butter, form into a loaf, cover with beaten egg and bake one and a half hours, basting often. Scalloped Lobster.—Pick out the meat from two middling-sized lobsters and cut fine in a chopping tray with a little salt, cayenne and mustard; pour over sufficient melted butter to moisten it; split the empty shells of the tails and the bodies and fill each of them neatly with the lobster; cover them with grated bread crumbs and put them into an oven fifteen minutes. Macaroni and Tomatoes.—Peel and slice some fresh tomatoes. Stew them with butter, salt and pepper, and a few spoonfuls of strong gravy or stock; add one rolled milk cracker. Pass the whole through a seive and mix with the boiled macaroni. Cover the top with grated cheese and a sprinkling of fine bread crumbs. Place the dish in the oven just long enough to nicely brown. Waffles.—Sift one pound of flour into a pan; beat well six eggs, separating the whites from the yolks; warm one quart of new milk; cut into it half a pound of butter and a little salt; stir the milk into the flour, will not take the cuss off if you don't know how to spell. Read your letter over carefully after you have written it, if you can; if not, send it with an apology about the rush of business. In ordering goods state whether you will remit soon, or whether the account should be placed in the refrigerator.—[Bill Nye. The Word of a Khan. Hulaku, the grandson of the great Genghis Khan, exceeded even the first Caliphs in religious respect for the sanctity of his word, and it is said that he invariably refused to make a promise "till the possibility of fulfilling it became absolutely indubitable." In the winter of 1257 he laid siege to the city of Bagdad, and, after planting his battering-rains, demanded an unconditional surrender, with the threat that both the Caliph and his subjects would be made to repent it if the gates were not opened before night. The defenders hesitated, but on the following day the Tartars erected a lofty gallows-tree, and the frightened Caliph preferred to come to terms. The magnificence of his gifts seemed to soften the heart of the conqueror, for the ominous scaffold was removed; but, after a private consultation with his captains, Hulaku concluded that, after all, something or other must be done to redeem his word. So, after enjoying the hospitality of the Caliph for a day or two, they marched him to headquarters, and, instead of hanging him, sewed him up in a leathern bag and dragged him across-lots till "every joint and bone in his body was pounded as in a mortar;" and, instead of burning the inhabitants with their city, they brained eight hundred thousand of them, and flung them into the Tigris, till the river was actually choked with corpses. Andrew Crichton (History of Arabia. vol. II., p. 45) adds that the number of the slain did not even include the victims of the neighboring villages. An Anti-Debris Party. SACRAMENTO, July 15.—To-day the Executive Committee of the Anti-Debris Association met at this site. Pass the whole through a serve and mix with the boiled macaroni. Cover the top with grated cheese and a sprinkling of fine bread crumbs. Place the dish in the oven just long enough to nicely brown. Waffles.—Sift one pound of flour into a pan; beat well six eggs, separating the whites from the yolks; warm one quart of new milk; cut into it half a pound of butter and a little salt; stir the milk into the flour, mix well, add the yolks and the whites, beat well together; then add half a cup of good yeast, set it to rise, and when risen bake in waffle irons a nice brown. Sift over them sugar and cinnamon. Parker-House Rolls. — At noon scald one pint of milk, let it cool, sift two quarts of flour, into which rub two tablespoonfuls of butter, and then make a hole in the center of the flour, let it stand several hours till it foams, then mix in all the flour, cover and set it away over night to rise. In the morning stir down, turn out on the breadboard, knead a very little, roll out not very thin, spread over with butter, cut in rounds, lapping one edge; set to rise in the pans one or two hours. Do not place the rolls near together. Bake in a quick oven twenty minutes. There has lately been exhibited in the Botanical Garden of Berlin the biggest flower in the world—the great flower of Sumatra known in science as the Rafflesia Arnoldf, and peculiar to Java and Sumatra. It measures nearly ten feet in circumference, and more than three in diameter. Sir Stamford Raffles and Dr. Joseph Arnold were exploring in company when they discovered this champion plant. the river was actually choked with corpses. Andrew Crichton (History of Arabia. vol. II., p. 45) adds that the number of the slain did not even include the victims of the neighboring villages. An Anti-Debris Party. SACRAMENTO, July 15.—To-day the Executive Committee of the Anti-Debris Association met at this city. The reports of J. C. Pierson and L. F. Bassett, surveyors, were received, read and ordered filed. The reports were relative to the hydraulic mines that dumped into the North Fork of the American river; also, that mines in other sections that had been operated during the past season had been largely suspended all along the line, and that the general inclination was to turn their hydraulic into drift mines. It was moved and carried that a call be issued for a convention of 205 delegates, to be held in Sacramento on the 26th of September, the delegates to be apportioned as follows: Sacramento, 25; San Joaquin, 25; Yuba, 25; Yolo, 25; Butte, 25; Sutter, 25; Colusa, 25; Solano, 10; Tehama, 10; certain districts in Placer, 10. The Supervisors of the several counties are to be ex-officio members of the Convention. Delegates to this Convention are to be appointed by the Boards of Supervisors of the several counties. The object of the Convention is to make a ticket from the other tickets in the field that will be friendly to the anti-debris movement. The committee adjourned till tomorrow. Enterprising Druggists. Although nature alone can produce perfect beauty, art may, in a great measure supply nature's deficiencies. We see this instanced in the clearness and luster imparted to even a sallow skin by GLEEN'S SULPHUR SOAP. The lady of forty, who uses this beautifier, drops at least ten years of her age. Unlike the dangerous cosmetics which obstruct the pores, it is entirely harmless. See that "C. N. CRITTENTON, Proprietor," is printed on each packet, without which none is genuine.
