THE GARDEN IN JULY.
The time is at hand for starting cuttings (soft wood) of most of the flowering plants, and some few of the shrubs. July, August and September are months in which success with cuttings is most easily attained by the amateur. It is so important an aid to gardening to be able to propagate plants easily and rapidly, that all should make the experiment. For many plants increase in this way is much better than from seeds. The cutting is taken from a shoot of new wood, selecting a large, thrifty and rather firm one. It is to be cut close below a joint, or through it, and it may be placed in a saucer of sand and water, kept in a warm window, or in moist sand in a pot, or rooted in water in a bottle, hung in the sunlight. When rooted, growth starts, and the young plant can soon be placed in a separate box or pot of earth, or planted out in the garden. All sorts of soft wooded plants can be rooted in WHERE THE HOUSE FLY BREEDS.
As "fly time" approaches every housekeeper wonders where and how the increasing swarms of pests multiply so rapidly.
The eggs, mere whitish specks to the unaided eye, are laid in little agglutinated piles in warm manure or in decomposing vegetation, especially that about our stables and barn yards. From 80 to 100 are laid at a time, and probably at three to four different intervals by the same fly, though on this point we have no exact data. Within twenty-four hours in summer, they hatch into footless maggots, which, after rioting in filth till their tender skins seem ready to burst from repletion, become full-fed in less than a week, and descending into the earth, or sheltering under some old boards contract to brown, shining objects rounded at both ends, and technically known as puparia. Within the darkness of this hardened skin profound changes rapidly take place, and the insect passes through the pupa to the perfect state, and finally, in about five days, the anterior end of the puparium is pushed off, and the fly quickly crawls out. At first its parts are pale and soft, and its wings are crumpled and useless, but these soon expand, and suddenly, without practice or teaching, the new fledged fly wings its way to your table to mock your displeasure—to share your repast. The length of time required from hatching to maturity varies with the season and temperature, but will not exceed ten days in midsummer, while the life of the perfect fly lasts about three weeks at the same season. As cold weather approaches propagation ceases, and the older flies perish. A few of the more vigorous females, however, retreat to some nook or cranny, where, in a state of torpor, they survive until the ensuing season.

When rooted, growth starts, and the young plant can soon be placed in a separate box or pot of earth, or planted out in the garden. All sorts of soft wooded plants can be rooted in water. The heliotropes, salvias, verbenas, thunbergias, begonias, oleanders, cape jasmine, wax plant (Boga), succulents of all sorts, the balsam, and many other plants root well in this way, and so do, among shrubs, the clerodendrous, the bignonias, the crape myrtle, hibiscus and abutilons.
In July the beds of China asters, and of lilies ought to be kept mulched unless conditions otherwise are unusually favorable. Large and abundant flowers are best obtained by this method. It need hardly be urged upon garden-lovers that careful staking up of all plants which are of brittle growth, is advisable. This is for the Coast region a time of sudden gusts of wind, which deface and spoil the appearance of many flowers. Dahlia's particularly need some care in this regard, and so do hollyhocks, the double varieties of which are so deservedly popular for decoration. It is said that sunflowers were abundantly planted last spring, but it is doubtful whether many persons know how stately and unique the large double-quilled sunflower is. The florets are tubular, fringed at the edge, and very fine, large and full. It is not a flower to ridicule, and planted in shrubbery, produces a grand effect.
The roses will not continue their superb gifts of flowers as lavishly as they did last month, but a good many blossoms may be had all through the summer, if only the bushes be kept free from insects, the full blown roses plucked, and sufficient water supplied. Roses, carnations and lilies count for a good deal at this season, and nothing else will quite compensate for lack of these.

As cold weather approaches propagation ceases, and the older flies perish. A few of the more vigorous females, however, retreat to some nook or cranny, where, in a state of torpor, they survive until the ensuing season—links 'twixit the summer gone by and to come. The insect may also hibernate in the pupa state in the ground. In rooms kept continuously warm, or in more southern latitudes, the fly remains active all winter, and our palace sleeping cars bring them daily to us from Florida during the coldest months of the year.
HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
Soda is a simple and speedy remedy for a burn.
In changing the table-cloths during the week, contrive to let the fresh one be for the dinner table.
Keep a box of powdered borax on your stand; it will do wonders in the way of softening the skin. If you have been working in the garden or doing things about the house which have tended to make your hands rough, when you wash them dip your fingers in the borax and rub your hands well with it.
It is sometimes necessary to take a little distasteful medicine. To do this without tasting it, put the required number of drops on a teaspoonful of sugar, and hold the head back a little, when the sugar will be dropped far down on the tongue; then take a little water, and the loathsome mixture will pass down the throat.
If onions which are to be boiled are put in salted water after they are peeled, and are allowed to remain in it for an hour before they are cooked, they will lose so much of their distinctive flavor that they will rarely remind one an hour after what he had for dinner. Onions that are to be eaten raw may be treated in the same way.
A very convenient and pretty bag is made like the old-fashioned long purse, and can be used for sewing, knitting, or even for a scrap-bag in the sitting-room. It is made of cashmere,
OROVILLE, July 6.—The Chico wife murderer, Schmidt, was to-day sentenced by Judge Hudley to be hanged. The promptness of action displayed in this case is in remarkable contrast to the usual procedure of our Courts in the disposition of criminals. The murder was committed on Saturday night, June 24th. He was examined on Wednesday following, and on Tuesday an information was filed in the Superior Court and the defendant was arraigned. He had able counsel assigned him by the Court, pleaded not guilty, and on Saturday, July 1st, he was tried and found guilty of murder in the first degree, in less than a week from the commission of the deed. To-day he has received the sentence of death. He displayed but little feeling or emotion when the sentence was pronounced.
NEW YORK, July 7.—The Princess Soulonque, of Hayti, arrived to-day. She will soon visit Cleveland, Cincinnati and Chicago, on her journey to San Francisco.
Gen. Skobeloff, the celebrated Russian General, died suddenly on Saturday at St. Petersburg.
USE FLY
Stop that Cough.
If you are suffering with a Cough, Cold, Asthma, Bronchitis, Hay Fever, Consumption, loss of voice, tickling in the throat, or any affection of the Throat or Lungs, use Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption. This is the great remedy that is causing so much excitement by its wonderful cures, curing thousands of hopeless cases. Over one million bottles of Dr. King's New Discovery have been used within the last year, and have given perfect satisfaction in every instance. We can unhesitatingly say that this is really the only sure cure for throat and lung affections, and can cheerfully recommend it to all. Call and get a trial bottle free of cost, or a regular size for $1 00. For sale by all druggists.
The Culture of Beauty.
Although nature alone can produce perfect beauty, art may, in a great measure supply nature's deficiencies. We see this instanced in the clearness and luster imparted to even a sallow skin by GLEEN'S SULPHUR SOAP. The lady of forty, who uses this beautifier, drops at least ten years of her age. Unlike the dangerous cosmetics which obstruct the pores, it is entirely harmless. See that "C. N. CRITTENTON, Proprietor," is printed on each packet, without which none is genuine. Sold by druggists and fancy goods dealers.
From Dr. C. C. Clark, Oswego, N.Y.
I have made sufficient experiments of COLDEN'S LIQUID BEEF Toxic to enable me to say it is by far the best of all the preparations of the kind (food and tonic) that have ever used. To the sufferer from chronic diseases, or the convalescent, it is invaluable, being both nourishing and strengthening." (Remember the name, COLDEN's—take no other.) Of druggists.
