A recent trial of the new Clyde built steamer Stirling Castle gave results upon which her owners claim her to be the fastest ocean going steamer in the world. Six consecutive runs at the measured mile gave a mean speed, on the Admiralty method, of 18.418 knots, or 21.3-10 miles per hour. The actual time taken in running each mile respectively was 3 minutes 13 seconds; 3 minutes 23 seconds; 3 minutes 12 seconds; 3 minutes 18 seconds; 3 minutes 13 seconds; and 3 minutes 18 seconds. On the trial there was a cargo of 3,000 tons dead weight on board. Her length is 430 feet, breadth 50 feet, and depth 33 feet, and she registers 4,300 tons. Her engines are of the three cylinder type, and have developed 8,237 horse power. The diameter of the high pressure cylinder is ORIGIN of NAMES of FABRICE. Many kinds of dry goods possess old English names which are used, more or less corrupted, throughout the world. The origin of these old names are given by Sir George Birdwood as follows: Damask is from the city of Damascus; satin from Zaytown, in China; calico from Calcutta; and muslin from Mosul. Buckram derived its name from Bochara; fustian comes from Fostat, a city of the Middle Ages, from which the modern Cairo is descended. Tafeta and tabby from a street in Bagdad. Cambric is from Cambrai. Gauze has its name from Gaza; baize from Bajae; dunity from Damietta, and jeans from Jaen. Druget is derived from a city in Ireland, Drogheda. Duck, from which Tucker street in Bristol is named, comes from Torque, in Normandy. Diaper is not from D'Ypres, but from the Greek diaspron, figured. Velvet is from the Italian vellute, woolly (Latin, vellus—a hide or pelt). Shawl is the Sanscrit sala, floor, for shawls were first used as carpets and tapestry. Bandanna is from an Indian word, meaning to bind or tie, because they are tied in knots before dyeing. Chintz comes from the Hindoo word chett. Delaine is the French "of wool." Alaska, or at least the southeastern portion thereof, is not so bad a country after all. One can live here very comfortably, eat well, drink well, sleep well and be contented, far more so than in many mining camps in lower latitudes, and this is the universal experience of all those with whom I have been thrown in contact. The sea is prolific in the best of food fish, which are easily caught, and clams and mussels can be minutes 13 seconds; 3 minutes 23 seconds; 3 minutes 12 seconds; 3 minutes 18 seconds; and 3 minutes 18 seconds. On the trial there was a cargo of 3,000 tons dead weight on board. Her length is 430 feet, breadth 50 feet, and depth 33 feet, and she registers 4,300 tons. Her engines are of the three cylinder type, and have developed 8,237 horse power. The diameter of the high pressure cylinder is 62 inches, and the two low pressure 90 inches, with a 6 foot 6 inch stroke. Surface condensers are used with Gwynne's "Invincible" circulating pumps. The boilers are of steel, and present a total heating surface of 21,-161 feet; the grate surface is 787 square feet; and the working pressure 100 pounds to the square inch. The propeller is made of manganese bronze, is 32 feet 4 inches in diameter, with a pitch of 31 feet. The maximum number of revolutions at the trial was 66¼ per minute, accompanied by the Engineer says, by absolutely no vibration, except in the immediate vicinity of the screw shaft. The hull is built of steel, on plans approved by the Admiralty, with a view to national requirements, and is capable of carrying coal for a twenty days' cruise. The Stirling Castle is intended for the tea trade. In view of her performance the recommendation of our board of naval advisers to build "fast" cruisers having a maximum speed of 15 knots would seem to be a trifle out of season. Twenty-five knots should be the figure aimed at. CONSUMPTION. Professor Tyndall announces that a German scientist, Dr. Koch, has at length succeeded in tracing the cause of consumption to a parasitic insect, and in proving that the disease is communicated by infection. Tyndall at the same time intimates that with this important discovery a cure for the disease has been found, and certainly it would be difficult to exaggerate the consequence of this intelligence. Professor Tyndall occupies so high a position in the scientific world that he cannot be supposed capable of making a premature or ill-considered representation upon a question of such chett. The sea is prolific in the best of food fish, which are easily caught, and clams and mussels can be had twice a day, when the tide is out, in tons. No finer venison exists in the world, and the supply is more than ample. Grouse and ducks in abundance. Wood until you cannot rest, and although the climate is cold—at times very disagreeable and quite rigorous—the thermometer has not been, this whole winter, lower than 4° above zero, about the coldest weather ever experienced at Sitka in forty years. Persons of good frame and health thrive here. Of course, a strong constitution is required to overcome the hardship necessarily attendant upon fron tier civilization, but if this cannot be produced upon the part of those here, they had better depart, and none who are not so blessed had better come here. This is a land of vigorous people—a hardy and bold race. One has only to look at the natives to become convinced of that. They are the pictures of health—round, fat, greasy, of sinewy and elastic frames, and able to do a harder day's work than most white men. A siwash will travel up a mountain trail at an angle of 35° almost at a dog trot, and pack 100 pounds on his back. Where you find instances of premature decay, disease and death, you can directly attribute it to intemperance and other resultant vices. —W. Gomeerneur Morris. A Wonderful Discovery. For the speedy cure of Consumption and all diseases that lead to it, such as stubborn Coughs, neglected Colds, Bronchitis, Hay Fever, Asthma, pain in the side and chest, dry hacking cough, tickling in the throat, Hoarseness, Sore Throat, and all chronic or lingering diseases of the throat and lungs. Dr. King's New Discovery has no equal and has established for itself a world-wide reputation. Many leading physicians recommend and use it in their practice. The formula from which it is prepared is highly recommended by all medical journals. The clergy and the press have complimented it in the most glowing terms. Go to your druggist and get a trial bottle free of cost, or a regular size for $1. For sale by all druggists. Prof. James A. Sewell, A.M., M.D. Of Medical Faculty, Laval University, Quebec, states: "I have found COLDEN'S LIQUID EXTRACT OF BEER AND TONIC INVIGORATOR particularly useful in advanced stages of Consumption, Weakness, Dyspepsia, and all Nervous Afflictions. In pregnant women it has been retained while every other article of food was rejected. I can recommend it as convenient, palatable and easy of digestion." (Remember the name, COLDEN's—take no other.) Of druggists. and in proving that the disease is communicated by infection. Tyndall at the same time intimates that with this important discovery a cure for the disease has been found, and certainly it would be difficult to exaggerate the consequence of this intelligence. Professor Tyndall occupies so high a position in the scientific world that he cannot be supposed capable of making a premature or ill-considered representation upon a question of such universal interest and importance, and therefore his statement may be accepted as a guarantee for the genuineness of the discovery, though it does not seem as clear that he in any way pledges himself to the efficiency of the remedial measures devised by Dr. Koch. The possibility that consumption may be cured, however, is a thought which contains greater hope and comfort for hundreds of thousands of human beings than perhaps any other announcement that could be made. For no disease has made such awful ravages, or has resisted the efforts of science so successfully, nor is there any part of the world in which the victims of consumption do not constitute a very large percentage in the regular bills of mortality. The man who has conferred such a boon upon the human race will be remembered even before Jenner, and if, as Professor Tyndall claims, this great discovery has been made possible only through vivisection, the opponents of that practice are likely to be overwhelmed by the tremendous argument thus suddenly brought against them. "I love my wife," gushed Fenderson. "Next to your wife's husband," added Fogg. BANK OF ANAHEIM. CAPITAL STOCK, $100,000.00. S. H. MOTT...PRESIDENT G. B.
