Dr. Franklin Staples, of Winona, Minn., after an extended correspondence with physicians in most of the counties of his State, has published a report on diphtheria, in which he classes the disease as contagious and infectious, and demonstrates that it is on the increase, a fact due, in his opinion, to failure on the part of physicians in recognizing its self-propagating properties; to want of systematic nursing of patients suffering from the disease; to incomplete disinfection of premises attacked; and last but not least, to the frequent intercourse of convalescents with healthy persons. He maintains that strict regulations, rigidly enforced, are the only means adequate to cut short its career, and since individual power is unable to cope with it, urges that anathemas of the Church. Here, for instance, is an extract from the comprehensive malediction which the Bishop of Santander has launched at the Liberal editors of his diocese: "May Almighty God curse these journalists with the perpetual malediction launched against the devil and his angels! May they perish with Nero, Julian the Apostate, and Judas the traitor! May the Lord Judge them as he judged Dathan and Abiram! May the earth swallow them up alive! Let them be cursed day and night, sleeping and waking, in eating, in drinking, and in playing, when they sleep and when they keep silence! May their eyes be blinded, their ears deaf, their tongue dumb! Cursed be every member of their body! Let them be cursed from to-day and forever! May their sepulchre be that of dogs and of asses! May famished wolves prey upon their corpses, and may their eternal company be that of the devil and his angels!" FRENCH FIELD MICE. Darwin's now familiar paradox, that the fertilization of certain flowers may depend upon the number of cats in their neighborhood, has an illustration now in France, where it may even be carried a step further. Any observer who knows the French rural districts well must be struck by the immense number of mouse holes which may be seen in some places. The surface of the ground at times has quite the appearance of a network of little burrows, where it would be impossible for one of the field-bees required for the fertilization of Mr. Darwin's flowers to find a secure spot for its nest. In the department of the Aisne alone it has just been calculated by a special commission that these field mice have Development in Foot Racing. The winner of the six day "go-as-you-please" contest, which began in New York February 27, made the unparalleled record of 600 miles. The second in the race covered 577 miles, beating every previous score save his own of 582 miles made in that city a year ago. The winner, Hazael, was on the track a few minutes short of 106 hours. The scores made by the winners of well must be struck by the immense number of mouse holes which may be seen in some places. The surface of the ground at times has quite the appearance of a network of little burrows, where it would be impossible for one of the field-bees required for the fertilization of Mr. Darwin's flowers to find a secure spot for its nest. In the department of the Aisne alone it has just been calculated by a special commission that these field mice have cost the farmers no less than thirteen million francs. The climate seems to be especially favorable to these creatures; and, the population being sparse, the number of cats is few, and the mice increase and multiply beyond belief. Arsenic has been tried in the open; but the hares and rabbits get killed first; and now the plan adopted is to construct heaps or small stacks of straw, to which the mice resort in myriads. These heaps are placed partly below the level of the ground, and securely packed and covered in; being first stored with poisoned beet root, turnips, and carrots. This plan is said to be succeeding well, and without harm to the hares and rabbits.—[Pall Mall Gazette. Stop that Cough. In a letter from Mrs. Charlotte Lisle of Chicago, a lady well known as a contributor to the Western press, she ascribes the cure of a dangerous cough, accompanied by bleeding at the lungs, to HALE'S HONEY OF HOREHOUND AND TAR. "My cough," she says, "threatened to suffocate me but the HONEY OF HOREHOUND AND TAR has removed every trace of it." The letter was to a lady friend in this city, who has placed it at the disposal of C. N. CRITTENTON, 115 Fulton street, N.Y. High Authority. Dr. W. E. Scott, President of the College of Physicians, Montreal, writes: "I have recommended COLDEN'S LIQUID EXTRACT OF BEEF AND TONIC INVIGORATOR as the best preparation used for Debility, Indigestion, Dyspepsia, Fever, Ague, and Loss of Appetite."
