Occasionally we see a person afflicted with that peculiar twitching known as St. Vitus' dance; but, while we pity the victim, few of us are aware that this troublesome, though surely formidable disease, is the meagre remnant of an epidemic which once attacked thousands and spread terror and confusion over large districts. This singular change, this mitigation of the malady from a rabid dance to a mere convulsion or distortion of a few muscles, shows that diseases wear out not only in individuals but in nations. The dancing mania appeared in Europe as early as 1027, but did not assume dreaded proportions until 1374, when vast assemblages of men and women were seen in Aix-la Chapelle, yielding to the uneasiness which
HABITS OF ORINOCO NATIVES.
A French naval doctor, M. Crevaux, has lately made important explorations in the northern parts of South America, more especially in the valley of the Orinoco and its affluents. Among other facts of observation, he states that the Guaraunos, at the delta of that river, take refuge in the trees when the delta is inundated. There they make a sort of dwelling with branches and clay. The women light, on a small piece of floor, the fire needed for cooking, and the traveler on the river by night often sees with surprise long rows of flames at a considerable height in the air. The Guaraunos dispose of their dead by hanging them in hammocks in the tops of trees. Dr. Crevaux, in the course of his travels, met with geophagous, or earth-eating, tribes. The clay, which often serves for their food whole months, seems to be a mixture of oxide of iron and some organic substances. They have recourse to it more especially in times of scarcity; but, strange to say, there are eager gourmands for the substance, individuals in whom the depraved taste becomes so pronounced that they may be seen tearing pieces of ferruginous clay from huts made of it and putting them in their mouths.
Everywhere, except in Turkey, the dog is regarded as the faithful friend of man. There, and in fact in every country where Islamism prevails, he is a complete outcast, and everything he touches becomes impure. The word dog in the mouth of a follower of Mahomet signifies all that is
and confusion over large districts.
This singular change, this mitigation of the malady from a rabid dance to a mere convulsion or distortion of a few muscles, shows that diseases wear out not only in individuals but in nations. The dancing mania appeared in Europe as early as 1027, but did not assume dreaded proportions until 1374, when vast assemblages of men and women were seen in Aix-la Chapelle, yielding to the uneasiness which oppressed them. They formed circles, hand in hand, and danced in the streets for hours together, in a wild delirium, until they fell from sheer exhaustion. They were relieved by having cloths bound tightly about their waists, or more simply, by thumping and tramping on the parts affected. While dancing, they neither saw nor heard, being entirely insensible to external impressions; but they, were haunted by fearful visions, and shrieked out their wild fancies as they leaped and twisted in agony. In the worst cases the attack began with epileptic convulsions; yet, though the patients fell to the ground senseless and foamed at the mouth, they were soon able to jump up again and renew the delirious dance amid strange contortions. In a few months the epidemic spread from Aix-la-Chapelle over all the Netherlands. In many towns the dancers wore garlands in their hair, and had cloths about their waists ready for tightening as soon as the fit passed. The sufferers were at first called St. John's Dancers, because that apostle's name was constantly upon their lips, and it is not improbable that the revels of St. John's day, 1374, gave rise to the disease. The people were suffering from wretchedness and want, and the frantic celebration of the festival, then observed with great form, was sufficient to kindle the malady in constitutions already prepared for it. In 1418 Strasburg was visited by the dancing plague, and there the aid of St. Vitus was invoked for the cure of the patients. Hence the name of the disease, which has descended to the present day. St. Vitus was a Sicilian youth, who suffered martyrdom under Dioclesian in 303, and early in the fifteenth century it was asserted that he would protect from the dancing mania all who observed his day and fasted upon tearing pieces of ferruginous clay from huts made of it and putting them in their mouths.
Everywhere, except in Turkey, the dog is regarded as the faithful friend of man. There, and in fact in every country where Islamism prevails, he is a complete outcast, and everything he touches becomes impure. The word dog in the mouth of a follower of Mahomet signifies all that is wretched and vile, and is applied as a term of the utmost contempt. On the contrary, the cat, the most ungrateful and least susceptible of attachment of all the domestic animals, is the daily companion alike of the bearded warrior and the fair inmate of the harem. The reason of this is found in the fact that a cat was the favorite pet of Mahomet, who often carried kittens in the bosom of his ample robe.
Among the fast runs made by trains running out of London are the following: Great Western (Swindon 77%), 87 minutes, no stoppage; Great Northern (Peterboro 76%), 90 minutes, no stoppage; Northwestern (Rugby 82%), 110 minutes, 1 min. stoppage; Midland (Kettering 72), 81 minutes, no stoppage; Southwestern (Salisbury 83%), 121 minutes, 3 min. stoppage; Great Eastern (Stowmarket 80%), 124 minutes, 5 min. stoppage.
Put it to Proof.
At a time when the community is flooded with so many unworthy devices and concoctions, it is refreshing to find one that is beneficial and pure. So conscious are the proprietors of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, of the worth of their remedy, that they offer all who desire a trial bottle free of charge. This certainly would be disastrous to them did not the remedy possess the remarkable curative qualities claimed. Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption will positively cure Asthma, Bronchitis, Stubborn Coughs, Colds, Phthysic, Quinsy, Hoarseness, Croup, or any affection of the throat and lungs. As you value your existence give this wonderful remedy a trial by calling on any Druggist and obtaining a trial bottle free of cost, or a regular size bottle for $1.00.
A Suffocating Cough.
In a letter from Mrs. Charlotte Lisle of Chicago, a lady well known as a contributor to the Western press, she ascribes the cure of a dangerous cough accompanied by bleeding at the lungs, to HALE'S HONEY OF HOREHOUND AND TAR. "My cough," she says, "threatened to suffocate me **** but the HONEY OF HOREHOUND AND TAR has removed every trace of it." The letter was to a lady friend in this city, who has placed it at the disposal of C. N. CRITTENTON, 115 Fulton street, N.Y.

St. Vitus was a Sicilian youth, who suffered martyrdom under Dioclesian in 303, and early in the fifteenth century it was asserted that he would protect from the dancing mania all who observed his day and fasted upon its eve. It was not until the beginning of the sixteenth century that St. Vitus' dance was under the subject of medical inquiry. Then it began to decline, and in modern times its severer forms have totally disappeared.
Very few men ever give a thought to the aggregate amount of food consumed by an individual in a lifetime, and hence when a calculation is made the result appears astounding if not incredible. A man eats on an average eight and a half ounces of meat per diem. Now, take a life of sixty-five years as an example. Allow eight and a half ounces a day for fifty years, two-thirds of that quantity for ten years, and three ounces a day for three years of childhood, and the total animal food devoured by a single person will be found to equalin bulk 350 dressed sheep. In addition, a man consumes in the course of his existence five tons of potatoes, about five tons of turnips and other vegetables, nine tons weight of water, and six tons weight of wine and other beverages, this calculation being made on the basis of moderation and sobriety. Thus for dinner alone about thirty tons weight of solids and liquids will pass through an individual's stomach in the period of sixty-five years.
