The latter are made to suffer by wearing as fashion or fond mammas may decree, their little legs bare in winter, hair falling over their eyes in a straight bang, and I know of one mother who kept the eyelashes of her baby cut short until he was able to walk. Another mother tied her child's ears close down for years, so that they would grow not only small, but nestle snugly to the head. Other bandage the ankles and tie up the fingers, so that they will taper, while of the moving from the tree, or from the premises where grown, by washing or thoroughly spraying said fruit with a solution composed of one (1 lb.) pound of whale-oil soap and one-fourth of one pound of flowers of sulphur to each and every one and one-quarter (1¼) gallons of water used as such disinfectant, or in any manner satisfactory to the Chief Executive Horticultural and Health Officer. It is necessary to do something, because there is no way that an insect can be carried hither and thither more easily than on a fruit which one can put in his pocket, and some of the oranges and lemons from some localities are well covered with the tiny pests. But it is true that the treatment of ripe fruit with whale-oil soap, etc., will destroy its market value, for the wretched perfume of whale-oil soap will not do as a substitute for the aroma of an orange. The spraying of the fruit when small and growing will no doubt prevent the lodgment of insects upon it, and smut as well, and by another year the fruit will be cleaned in this way beforehand. But now there is the infested fruit, and something must be done with it. We understand that Mr. Cooke is looking into the subject, and will no doubt give such an easement of the difficulty as he can without permitting the dissemination of the insects. THE NIHILIST WOMEN. The remarkable types of Nihilist women are well known. Vera Sas- fashion or long mammas may decree, their little legs bare in winter, hair falling over their eyes in a straight bang, and I know of one mother who kept the eyelashes of her baby cut short until he was able to walk. Another mother tied her child's ears close down for years, so that they would grow not only small, but nestle snugly to the head. Other bandage the ankles and tie up the fingers, so that they will taper, while of the Chinese children it is almost too dreadful to speak. They undergo various stages of torture, commencing at the age of 2 years. First, the four toes are forced under the ball of the foot and bound in that position until they lose their articulation and identity as limbs, and become amalgamated with the sole of the foot. The second part of the operation is a torture so terrible that sickly children frequently die under it. The sole of the foot is curved into the shape of a bow, bringing the great toe and heel together as near as possible. The natives of the Western Pacific, who have naturally dark hair, wear it as light as they can make it by the aid of the caustic ash obtained from burned coal. The Venetian ladies used to spread their locks in the sun to bleach them. As to shaving, savages are about as peculiar as the General who shaved every morning during the retreat from Moscow. We have often read of the discomfort they were obliged to undergo by shaving the head with a shell or hard piece of flint, or how it was necessary for a friend to sit on the head of a savage when he is being shaved, and how the favor is reciprocated when the accommodating party's turn comes. The growing of finger nails has been carried to the extreme limit of possibility, some having been seen in China nine and ten inches long. We will not discuss the tattooing, except to say that its only real use was the marking of all members of the same family so that they could never deny their identity, nor of the old barbaric custom of wearing large bones in their noses, so huge, in fact, that they were forced to keep their mouths open in order to breathe, nor of how in Peru the lobes of the ears were trained to hang down to the shoulder nor of how many cavities infested fruit, and something must be done with it. We understand that Mr. Cooke is looking into the subject, and will no doubt give such an easement of the difficulty as he can without permitting the dissemination of the insects. THE NIHILIST WOMEN. The remarkable types of Nihilist women are well known. Vera Sassulitch, whose shot inaugurated terrorism, was the most modest of her sex. In the court room she blushed when she perceived any one staring at her. Lyda Figner, an accomplished lady and a charming singer, got eight years in the Siberian mines for sitting in a parlor playing the piano for weary hours, trying to drown the noise made by the secret printing presses in the adjoining room. Anna Lebedeff, a priest's daughter, in the disguise of a wife of a switchman, lived in a watch house on the railroad, and was found on a box filled with dynamite, chatting with a switchman. Sophy Perovsky, the daughter of a General and a Senator, who declined the dignity of maid of honor to the Empress, entered the Nihilist fraternity, dug the Moscow mine and directed the late Czar's assassination. Sophy Hardin, who was welcomed as a shining star in the literary horizon, wrote a few poems which, though gems of Russian literature, were treasonable, and the singing of them is a State crime. In the Utah contested election case, the House Committee on Elections have adopted resolutions declaring that neither Campbell nor Cannon was entitled to the seat as delegate from Utah, and declaring the seat vacant. Free of Cost. DR. KING'S NEW DISCOVERY FOR CONSUMPTION, COUGHS AND COLDS, ASThma, Bronchitis, etc., is given away in trial bottles free of cost to the afflicted. If you have a severe cough, cold, difficulty of breathing, hoarseness or any affection of the throat or lungs by all means give this wonderful remedy a trial. As you value your existence you cannot afford to let this opportunity pass. We could not afford, and would not give this remedy away unless we knew it would accomplish what we claim for it. Thousands of hopeless cases have already been completely cured by it. There is no medicine in the world that will cure one-half the cases that Dr. King's New Discovery will cure. For sale by all druggists. We will not discuss the tattooing, except to say that its only real use was the marking of all members of the same family so that they could never deny their identity, nor of the old barbaric custom of wearing large bones in their noses, so huge, in fact, that they were forced to keep their mouths open in order to breathe, nor of how in Peru the lobes of the ears were trained to hang down to the shoulders, nor of how many savages cut their noses, ears, lips and other parts of the frame into various conventional designs. It is sad enough to know that we, as civilized people, suffer the tortures we do, without tracing the follies of past ages. Do we not cut holes in our ears instead of our noses, press our feet into stiff, tight, high-heeled shoes, and our waists into the vilest kind of instruments of torture? DISINFECTION OF FRUIT. The great problem in the present fight against scale insects is, how to handle the oranges and lemons upon which the pests have fastened themselves. The regulations formed by the Chief Horticultural Office, Mr. Cooke, are as follows: 3. Fruit of any kind infested by any species of scale insect or scale insects, or the germs thereof, namely, their eggs, larvae or pupae, known to be injurious to fruit and fruit trees, and liable to spread contagion, is hereby required to be disinfected, as hereinafter provided, before removal off the premises where grown, for the purpose of sale, gift, distribution or transportation. 10. Fruit on deciduous and citrus trees infested by any species of scale insect, or scale insects, or the germs thereof, namely, their eggs, larvae or pupae, may be disinfected before re- X. H. MITCHELL.
