THE WOMAN MARKET AT TUNIS.
A most impressive journey is to the palace of the Bey, the Bardo. Passing through the marine gate we enter the quarters of the town which lie between the ancient wall and the outer ramparts; we glide past a confused multitude of huts and houses and shops (which are a joke) filled with charming rubbish kept by wax-work figures; rows of sable women sitting against whitewashed walls with piles of bread; youths with savage faces; bent old men leaning on their staffs; mangy children with scald heads—shirted, hooded, naked, with features black and yellow in all indesirable shades, in costume for the parish stocks; and there was but one escape—the flight to Gretna Green, a sanctuary known now only to history. The coolness with which it was sometimes resorted to may be exemplified by a quotation (given to me by a grandson of the parties) from a letter written not, however, to the parents of the lady (for she was an orphan), but to her guardians, beginning thus: "Gentlemen: Your unnatural behavior to your ward, Miss — induced her, however reluctantly, to take a journey to Scotland, in which she allowed me the honor of accompanying her." The slackening of restraints in this century may have better results on the whole than the "unnatural behavior" of the last, but it sometimes leads to impromptu arrangements by young people which may seem not to have been made with a sufficient sense of their seriousness. I have known of a proposal in this century by a young gentleman to a still younger lady, who gave the ready reply: "O yes, let us be married; it will be such awful fun!" I trust that her somewhat sudden and sanguine expectations were fulfilled. I have no reason to think that they were not. But there is something to be said for taking time on such occasions, and looking before and after.—English Paper.

Michael Lycet waited until he was 37 before seeking a wife, and then found the job less easy and more costly than he had expected, though he had the advantage of a considerable bank account. He lives at Nice-town, a suburb of Philadelphia. He gave a fiddler, whose occupation put him in the way of knowing a great many girls, $10 as a fee for introducing him to an eligible party; but the girl with whom the agent put him into relations favorable to courtship was crosseyed, and therefore unsatisfactory. A second payment of $10 to the fiddler resulted in an acquaintance with Miss Nolan, who jilted him after receiving two dresses and a cloak; and subsequently with Miss Casey, to whom he gave a bonnet, shoes, gloves, and hosiery before finding out that she would not marry him. Then Michael discarded the fiddler and struck out for himself with Miss Moran, the daughter of his landlady. He gave to a Police Justice, a few days ago, the following account of his experience with this girl: "First she axed for a silk dhress. Do you mind that? Sez I, 'Will ye marry me?' It's hasty ye are,' sez she. 'Margaret,' sez I it's no silk dhress you'll have from me till ye promise.' 'Very well,' sez she, 'I'll be Mrs. Lycet on Christmas Day.' 'The day before Christmas,' sez I, it's married in the mornin' we'll be.' 'Phwat mormin'?' sez she, openin' her eyes, and starin' in me face. 'Christmas mormin', sez I. 'It's New Year's I said,' sez she, as bould as brass.' I wur bilin' mad, but she stud like a cow in the mud, ad' cud nayther be druv nor blarney-ed. So I waited, an' to put her intil shpirits I gev her a twenty-seven-dollar goold ring. On New Year's Day she sint me a litter sayin' she'd not marry me if I wuz made of goold." It was to recover the ring that Michael resorted to the Police Court, and, meeting with success, he has sued all three deceivers to make them give up all his presents.

MARRIAGE IN TWO CENTURIES.
A London writer says: How were young ladies dealt with and how were marriages managed in the fifteenth century? If this generation of young ladies have any notion of it, they will rejoice that they were not born to be married 400 years ago. They know very well that if they have attended to their duty and trained up their parents in the way they should go, they may choose for themselves, with or without discrimination, as the case may be. Neither they nor their parents may have taken the view which I recollect to have heard from Mr. Rogers, that it does not much signify whom one marries, as one is sure to find next morning that it was somebody else; but though they may not be prepared to go quite this length, yet, from one cause or another, the young in their willfulness and strength will not seldom act, and the old in their impotence concede, in such sort that they might seem not to stop far short of it. It was otherwise in the last century. Parental rigor in those days could hold its own as firmly as

I have used Colden's Liquid Extract of Beef and Tonic Invigorator for more than a year, and recommend it as one of the most efficient preparations I have ever met with. It combines the virtues of food and tonic in a remarkable way, and I am satisfied has saved life when no other medicine could do so. (Remember the name, Colden's — take no other.) An Aufful Responsibility.
Everybody has something to say about Consumption. We all deplore its terrible ravages, but only a few of us seem to have common sense enough to take the proper means of preventing it. It is a fact as easy of proof as that two and two are four, that Hale's Honey of Horehound and Tar, taken as a remedy for Coughs, Colds, Difficult Breathing, Hoarseness or any other of the symptoms which, as it were, pave the way for that terrible destroyer, will effect a radical and rapid cure of the ailment and avert all danger. Whoever, knowing this, neglects to resort to the true specific under such circumstances, assumes a fearful responsibility. Sold by druggists.

HOSTETTER'S
CELEBRATED
STOMACH
BITTERS
A remedy with such a reputation as Hostetter's Stomach Bitters deserves a fair trial. If you are dyspeptic, your malady will eventually yield to it; if you are feeble, lack flesh and feel dependent, it will both build and cheer you up; if you are constipated, it will release, and if billions, healthfully stimulate your liver. Don't despond, but make this effort in the right direction.
For sale by all Druggists and Dealers generally.
The real property will be sold subject to redemption within twelve months from the date of the sale; but, if not redeemed, conveyances absolute in form, of the property sold will be executed to the purchasers thereof, as provided by law.
