EFFICIENCY OF NEW YORK FIREMEN.
New York Sun.
Engine 33 of the Fire Department, Capt. Golden, lies in Mercer street, a few doors north of West Third street. Its house is old-fashioned and inconvenient, but Capt. Golden and his men are alert and spry, and their work as firemen has made the company one that the Commissioners are proud to show to distinguished visitors from other cities and from Europe. Commissioner Van Cott and Chief of Battalion Bresnan, who was promoted from the Captaincy of the company, take an especial interest in it, and the men, being under the constant supervision of their superiors, have been put on their mettle. Commissioner Van Cott and Chief of Battalion Bresnan, who was promoted from the Captaincy of the company, take an especial interest in it, and the men, being under the constant supervision of their superiors, have been put on their mettle. Until Saturday evening last they fancied they had got the work of hitching up and dashing off to a fire down to about the finest point. Twice, successively, for the benefit of a Sun reporter, they got to their stations on engine and tender within three and a quarter seconds. Quick as they were, though, they were no quicker than Jack and Jim, the engine horses, and Bill, the jet-black motive power of the tender. At the first note of the gong the big animals, as swift-footed and sure-footed as cats, sprang from their stalls, and thundered among the flying men to their places under their harness. Indeed, Jack, a noble roan and the pet of the company, could be induced only by a stern command to wait for the stroke of the gong, but as he saw the Captain approach it danced and plunged in his stall, his eyes blazing with excitement.
After the trials, Chief Bresnan, who, with ex-Alderman Morris, was on a visit to the house, directed the men to return to their sitting room. Workmen had been setting up a novel appliance for saving time in getting ready to start for a fire. It was a highly polished brass pole, about three inches in diameter, set in a socket in the main floor, and extending through circular holes cut in the two upper floors, to another socket in the roof. Capt. Golden ordered four men to go to the bunk room on the second floor and lie down on their cots. The two men nearest the pole were to slide down at a stroke upon the gong, and the other two to run down the stairway. The men chosen to run down the stairs were the youngest and most active in the company.
Capt. Golden stepped to the gong and gave one resounding clang. Overhead, for an instant, there was a clatter of feet. Then two objects, clad in dark blue, flashed down the pole, and within three seconds the driver was in his seat, and the man whose detritus it was snapped the spring heave a huge round stone"—in short anything that will start the perspiration, and you will soon cease to have your brains lined with black, as Burton expressed it, or to rise in the morning, as Cowper did,"like an infernal frog out of Acherone, crowned with the ooze and mud of melancholy."
The Salt Lake Tribune is indignant at the course pursued by the New York Times in regard to the Mormon question. Says the Tribune: The New York Times is a very beautiful specimen of a jack-Mormon. It is edited by a burly English bruise, and he never puts his pen to paper to discuss the situation here without revealing the fact that, in his secret soul, he wishes that every double-necked scoundrel in America could have a private harenn. We suspect that he is proud, after a fashion, of this English kingdom here in the West, and that if appealed to for his personal opinion, he would own that this kingdom, while not nearly so perfect as Her Majesty's is still a vast improvement over the Republic of the United States. He insists that it is impossible to wipe out polygamy by law; but when a proposition is made to strike directly at it by putting things under a commission here, then he squirms and cries out that it must not be; that "the resources of the law-making power have not been exhausted against the polygamists." He talks about the efforts being made for the suppression of Mormonism. He knows a great deal better. He knows that no one cares what god his neighbor worships, but the complaint here is that under the name of a creed men are committing outrageous crimes against decency, and are bringing to shame the sovereignty of the Republic, and that it is against these features alone which the people are making war.
John W. Berry was hanged at Prescott, A.T., on the 3d instant for a murder committed last April.
Enterprising Druggists.
The live Druggists of the town are always up to the times and ready to meet the demands of their many customers. They have just received a supply of that wonderful remedy that is astonishing the world by its marvelous cures. Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs, Colds, Asthma, Bronchitis, Hay Fever, Phthisis, Croup, Whooping Cough, Tickling in the Throat, Loss of Voice, Hoarseness or any affection of the Throat and Lungs. This remedy positively cures, as thousands can testify. If you do not believe it call at any drug store and get a Trial Bottle free of cost or a regular size bottle for one dollar. As you value your life, give it a trial and be convinced, as thousands already have.
Opinion of Eminent Dr. R. S. Steuart.
President Maryland Hospital, Baltimore.
I have used Colden's Liebig's LIQUID EXTRACT OF BEER AND TONIC INVIGORATOR for more than a year, and recommend it as one of the most efficien
down the stairway. The men chosen to run down the stairs were the youngest and most active in the company.
Capt. Golden stepped to the gong and gave one resounding clang. Overhead, for an instant, there was a clatter of feet. Then two objects, clad in dark blue, flashed down the pole, and within three seconds the driver was in his seat, and the man whose duty it was to snap the spring buckle on the off horse stood, with uplifted hand, at his post. The other men had got only half way down the stairway, and had twenty-five feet of flooring to traverse before they could reach the engine.
“This is the first trial of a device that, I think,” said Chief Bresnan, “will cut down the average time for hitching up wonderfully. I don’t like to say what the average time will be if this appliance is generally adopted. It is the result of one of Commissioner Van Cott’s ideas, worked out with some practical suggestions from Chief McCabe of the department repair shops and myself. With three more poles, two at the back, and one at the right side of the engine, all the men can land close to their stations. The probability is that the poles will be used in the new house of the company in Great Jones street, and many thereafter come into general use in the department.”
INSURE AGAINST FIRE
By taking out a policy in one of the companies of which Richard Melrose is Agent. Prompt payment of losses, and liberal rates to insurers are the characteristics of the companies he represents.
Opinion of Eminent Dr. R. S. Steuart.
PRESIDENT MARYLAND HOSPITAL, BALTIMORE.
I have used Colden's Liebig's LIQUID EXTRACT OF BEER AND TONIC INVIGORATOR for more than a year, and recommend it as one of the most efficient preparations I have ever met with. It combines the virtues of food and tonic in a remarkable way, and I am satisfied has saved life when no other medicine could do so. (Remember the name, Colden's — take no other.) Of druggists generally.
An Aufful Responsibility.
Everybody has something to say about Consumption. We all deplore its terrible ravages, but only a few of us seem to have common sense enough to take the proper means of preventing it. It is a fact as easy of proof as that two and two are four, that HALE'S HONEY OF HORKHOUND AND TAR, taken as a remedy for Conghs, Colds, Difficult Breathing, Hoarseness or any other of the symptoms which, as it were, pave the way for that terrible destroyer, will effect a radical and rapid cure of the ailment and avert all danger. Whoever knowing this neglects to resort to the true specific under such circumstances, assumes a fearful responsibility. Sold by druggists.
PIKE'S TOOTHACHE DROPS cure in one minute.

BITTERS
A remedy with such a reputation as Hostetter's Stomach Bitters deserves a fair trial. If you are dyspeptic, your malady will eventually yield to it; if you are feeble, lack flesh and feel despondent, it will both build and cheer you up; if you are constipated, it will release, and if bilious, heartfully stimulate your liver. Don't despend, but make this effort in the right direction.
For sale by all Druggists and Dealers generally.
The real property will be sold subject to redemption within twelve months from the date of the sale; but, if not redeemed, conveyances absolute in form, of the property sold will be executed to the purchasers thereof, as provided by law.
