POSTAGE STAMPS.
How they are Prepared, Printed and Perforated.
Scientific American.
The number of ordinary postage stamps issued in 1881 was 954,128,440, and the value $24,040,648. The method of printing postage stamps is as follows: The printing is done from steel plates, on which 200 stamps are engraved, and the paper used is of a peculiar texture, somewhat resembling that employed for bank notes. Two men cover the plates with the colored inks and pass them to a man and girl, who print them with large rolling hand-presses. Three of these little squads are employed all the time, although ten can be put in operation if necessary. The colors used in the inks are ultramarine blue, Prussian blue, chrome yellow and Benjamin brown (gross) percillium and When everything was settled to her satisfaction she derived so much contentment from contemplating the future of her little ones that she rapidly convalesced.
Josh Billings says that "a good doctor is a gentleman to whom we pay three dollars a visit for advising us to eat less and exercise more."
To call an elevator an "alleviator," as a lady is said to have done recently, may be murdering English—but with extenuating circumstances.
Something is due to courtesy at all times, and in all places, but the obligation of civility is doubly binding where it has been taught as a part of good breeding.
A writer who lately declared that the temperance party was going to rise like "a giant refreshed with wine," was rather unfortunate in his choice of a simile.
The King of Portugal can sympathize with the Czar. The enemies of Royalty have been after him with poison. It is not as loud as dynamite, but it is equally effective.
Douglas Jerrold said—"The ugliest of trades have their moments of pleasure. Now, if I were a grave digger, or even a hangman, there are some people I could work for with a good deal of enjoyment."
At a young ladies' seminary recently, during an examination in history, one of the pupils was interrogated thus: "Mary, did Martin Luther die a natural death?" "No," was the reply; "he was excommunicated by a bull."

After the sheets of paper on which the 200 stamps are engraved have been dried, they are sent into another room and gummed. The gum is made of the powder of dried potatoes and other vegetables, mixed with water. Gum arabic is not desirable because it cracks the paper badly. The sheets are gummed separately. They are placed back upward upon a flat wooden support, the edges being protected by a metallic frame, and the gum is applied by a wide brush. After having been again dried, this time on little racks, which are fanned by steam power for about an hour, they are put in-between sheets of pasteboard and pressed between hydraulic presses capable of applying a weight of 2,000 tons.
The sheets are next cut in halves, each sheet, of course, containing 100 stamps. This is done by a girl with a large pair of shears, cutting by hand being preferred to that of machinery, which method would destroy too many stamps. They are then passed to the perforating machine. The perforations between the stamps are effected by passing the sheets between two cylinders provided with a series of raised bands, which are adjusted to a distance apart equal to that required between the rows of perforations. Each ring on the upper cylinder has a series of cylindrical projections which fit corresponding depressions in the bands of the lower cylinder; by these the perforations are punched out, and by a simple contrivance the sheet is detached from the cylinders, in which it has been conducted by an endless band. The rows running longitudinally of the paper are first made and then by a similar machine the transverse ones. This perforating machine was invented and patented by a Mr. Arthur in 1852, and was purchased of a peculiar texture, somewhat resembling that employed for bank notes. Two men cover the plates with the colored inks and pass them to a man and girl, who print them with large rolling hand-presses. Three of these little squads are employed all the time, although ten can be put in operation if necessary. The colors used in the inks are ultramarine blue, Prussian blue, chrome yellow and Prussian blue (green), vermillion and carmine.
At a young ladies' seminary recently, during an examination in history, one of the pupils was interrogated thus: "Mary, did Martin Luther die a natural death?" "No," was the reply; "he was excommunicated by a bull."
Under certain circumstances men change even their physical natures instantaneously. Go up to the tallest man in the community, ask him in a sweet, necromantic voice to lend you $5, and you will suddenly find him very short indeed.
Little Alice was crying bitterly, and on being questioned, confessed to having received a slap from one of her playfellows. "You should have returned it," unwisely said the questioner. "Oh, I returned it before," said the little girl.
In Virginia, when a man is convicted of burglary for the third time, the law considers him confirmed in the bad habit and relieves the community of its fears by sending him to the penitentiary for life. It is a good law that might well be copied elsewhere.
St. Louis, January 21.—Robert Bailey, teacher of a public school near the town of Redbud, Monroe county, Ill., was killed yesterday afternoon by one of his pupils named Emmet McBride. The teacher undertook to chastise McBride for disobedience of rules, McBride resisted and a struggle ensued, during which Bailey was stabbed to the heart and killed.

which fit corresponding depressions in the bands of the lower cylinder; by these the perforations are punched out, and by a simple contrivance the sheet is detached from the cylinders, in which it has been conducted by an endless band. The rows running longitudinally of the paper are first made and then by a similar machine the transverse ones. This perforating machine was invented and patented by a Mr. Arthur in 1852, and was purchased by the Government for $20,000. The sheets are next dressed once more, and then packed and labeled and stored in another rocm, preparatory to being put up in mail bags for dispatching to fulfill orders. If a single stamp is in any way mutilated the whole sheet of 100 is burned. Five thousand are burned every week from this cause. The sheets are counted no less than eleven times during the process of manufacturing, and so great is the care taken in counting that not a single sheet has been lost during the past twenty years.
The vagaries of the invalid are not always to be encouraged. A Long Island woman, being convinced that her end was near and being unduly solicitous about the fate of her six children, implored her husband to marry her youngest sister. He promised to do so after the funeral, and the sick woman was afraid that they might not be as good as their word. She entreated them to give a dying woman the consolation of knowing that her children would certainly be cherished after her departure. Worn out with her importunity, they finally consented to be married at once.

"I am the Last of Six."
One rainy forenoon, something less than a year ago, a pale, cadaverous youth walked into the store of C. N. CRITTENTON, New York, and in weak, husky tones, interrupted frequently by a dry, hacking cough, stated that he wanted a couple bottles of HALE'S HONEY OF HOREHOUND AND TAR. "I am the last of six," he said; "the others all died of consumption, and I am going fast. I will try this new remedy, but I have no hope." He did try it, and to some purpose. He took in all twelve bottles, and is to-day in perfect health—lungs sound, cough gone, not a sign of pulmonary disease remaining. Sold by druggists.
