AGRICULTURAL HINTS FROM EUROPE.
Southern Europe is in many respects a field of constant interest for California farmers, fruit growers and viticulturists. If due allowance be made for the fact that wages are lower there than here, and competition of every kind is closer, the methods used in France, Spain and Italy cannot but be suggestive to our own people. Of especial value at the present time are the experiments in the use of machinery now being made in Europe. Americans do not have a monopoly of inventive skill, and few farmers realize how rapidly labor-saving machinery is being adopted in regions where hitherto manual labor was mainly Coast as equal to the carrot and beet, and in some respects better. In sections where the turnip thrives as a field crop, as in Washington Territory, it occupies a place that no other root can; but for most parts of California the parsnip and beet will succeed where the turnip fails entirely.
COLD COMFORT.
It is too early in the season to entertain serious misgivings in relation to the supply of rain. There is no way to calculate the future but from the past. We have thirty-two years of a recorded meteorological past behind us. We have had five years of drought since 1849. They occurred in the seasons of 1850-51, 1862-63, 1863-64, 1870-71, and 1876-77. Two of these droughts came in succession—that is to say, those of 1862-63 and 1863-64. But they followed the year known as that of the "flood," in which the unprecedented amount of 49.27 inches fell in the central portion of the State. Of these 24.36 inches, more than the average of a whole season, fell in the month of January.
All these droughts, with this exception, are separated by wide intervals. Eleven years elapsed between the drought of 1850-51 and that of 1862-63. Six years elapsed between the drought of 1863-64 (10.08 inches) and the partial drought of 1870-71 (14.10 inches). But it was twelve years to the next real drought or that of 1876-77 (10 inches). We are only in the fifth year since the last drought. If we assume that no season is a drought except that in which the rainfall is 10
than here, and competition of every kind is closer, the methods used in France, Spain and Italy cannot but be suggestive to our own people. Of especial value at the present time are the experiments in the use of machinery now being made in Europe. Americans do not have a monopoly of inventive skill, and few farmers realize how rapidly labor-saving machinery is being adopted in regions where hitherto manual labor was mainly used.
In France, for instance, capital is being invested and many experiments are now in progress with a view of plowing by electricity. Plowing by steam is gaining in popularity, the soil being tilled deeper and more thoroughly by this than by any other system. The electric motion power as applied to plows, can be sent along wires for a distance of several miles.
France has scientists of world-wide reputation, who are devoting their best efforts to chemical investigations for the direct and indirect benefit of the farmers and horticulturists. Some of their recent discoveries are of a marvelous nature and ought to attract wide notice. For example, allusion has frequently been made to the researches of M. Louis Pasteur who studies microscopic fungi, and has discovered methods of preventing certain virulent disorders and diseases of animals and plants by inoculation with the germs of other fungi, which destroy the original cause of the trouble. His earlier discoveries were of vital importance to the silk culturers, brewers and farmers. He has recently turned his attention to the prevention of diseases in domestic animals. By his system of inoculation he protects sheep and cattle against the malignant "Anthrax" or "Splenic fever." He also prevents the spread of chicken cholera among poultry. The Anthrax disease has ravaged the pastures of Auvergne, and M. Pasteur has established a laboratory for preparing the vaccinating matter. The cost is about three cents per animal, and over 50,000 have been inoculated this season.
Salicylic acid, whose preservative powers on fruit ought to be better known, is being used in Germany for various diseases of domestic animals. Veterinary surgeons find it very useful, are separated by wide intervals. Eleven years elapsed between the drouth of 1850-51 and that of 1862-63. Six years elapsed between the drouth of 1863-64 (10.08 inches) and the partial drouth of 1870-71 (14.10 inches). But it was twelve years to the next real drouth or that of 1876-77 (10 inches). We are only in the fifth year since the last drouth. If we assume that no season is a drouth except that in which the rainfall is 10 inches and below, there have been only three drouths since 1849. As we have no record preceding that year, we find that these drouths are separated by an average of eleven and a half years. If there is any diminution this season, according to the doctrine of probabilities, the supply will not be less than 13 or 14 inches. It will be the intermediate or partial drouth.
But so far, that must be regarded as the extreme or desperate chance. The apprehension of a drouth this time is based on the fact that up to January 1st only 6.58 inches had fallen. Less than that amount fell before the new year in ten seasons, but they were all fully up to the average and one of them—that of 1877-78—went to 31.12 inches. Another view of the case is presented in the fact that the rainfall to January 1st is largely in excess of that in the drouth years. In 1850-51 the rainfall to January 1st was only 2.30 inches; in 1863-64, 4.38 inches, and in 1876-77, 3.21 inches, against 6.51 this season. It is also in advance of the two years of partial drouth, viz., 1862-63, 2.90 inches, and 1870-71, 3.84 inches. From these facts it would appear that the chance for a drouth is a very remote one. On the contrary, the indications are of a downpour of from 18 to 26 inches.—Bulletin, Jan. 6.
Free of Cost.
Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colitis, Asthma, Bronchitis, etc., is given away in trial bottles free of cost to the afflicted. If you have a severe cough, cold, difficulty of breathing, hoarseness or any affection of the throat or lungs by all means give this wonderful remedy a trial. As you value your existence you cannot afford to let this opportunity pass. We could not afford, and would not give this remedy away unless we knew it: would accomplish what we claim for it. Thousands of hopeless cases have already been completely cured by it. There is no medicine in the world that will cure one-half the cases that Dr. King's New Discovery will cure. Salicylic acid, whose preservative powers on fruit ought to be better known, is being used in Germany for various diseases of domestic animals. Veterinary surgeons find it very useful for curing sore mouths. Eruptions about the eyes and head of poultry are cured by touching the affected parts with weak salicylic acid. But this acid is now used as a preventive of disease, being given to horses and cattle at the rate of one-thirtieth of an ounce daily (costing about one cent) to each full-grown animal. The acid is dissolved in warm water.
In Southern France, the industry of making cheese from sheep's milk is rapidly increasing, and is found profitable. (This is the noted Roquefort cheese.) The sheep used are a peculiar breed reared for milking qualities mainly. The ewes have four or six teats, udder large, wool rare, little yolk, ears large. A ewe nets about forty-eight francs yearly. Six quarts of milk make one pound of cheese.
In Vienna a preparation of arsenic is given to carriage horses to make them sleep, and arsenic is used to combat typhoid fever in horses, the stable being also sprinkled with carbolic acid, two ounces to a quart of water. In France the parsnip (a root which thrives wonderfully in California) is being used to feed horses with, taking the place, in a large measure, of oats. This root is in many particulars the most nutritious known, and is recommended for trial to all stock-raisers on the Pacific

"Colden's Liebig's Liquid Extract of Beef and Tonic Invigorator is a most excellent preparation. It is, par excellence, superior to cod-liver oil or anything I have ever used in wasted or impaired constitutions, and extremely beneficial as a preventive of malarial diseases." (Remember the name, Colden's—take no other.) Of druggists generally.
"I am the Last of Six."
One rainy forepoon, something less than a year ago, a pale, cadaverous youth walked into the store of C. N. CRITTENTON, New York, and in weak, husky tones, interrupted frequently by a dry, hacking cough, stated that he wanted a couple bottles of Hale's Honey of Horehound and Tar. "I am the last of six," he said; "the others all died of consumption, and I am going fast. I will try this new remedy, but I have no hope." He did try it, and to some purpose. He took in all twelve bottles, and is to-day in perfect health—lungs sound, cough gone, not a sign of pulmonary disease remaining. Sold by druggists.
