ODD ACCIDENTS.
At Canton, O., James Little drank some cold beer which paralyzed his stomach and, forming carbonic acid gas, his whole system, causing nearly instantaneous death.
At Indianapolis, the weight of a cask of water smashed the teeth of a "Man with the Iron Jaw," and falling on his breast it crushed him to death.
At Dovercourt, England, a boy named Boast swallowed the sting of a wasp while eating some preserves, and died while running to the doctor's.
At Boston, Simeon Long, while playing with the cat in his hallway, made a misstep and fell against the wall and broke his neck.
At Green Ridge, Pa., John Thompson and his brother tried to stop a dog fight, and the latter threw a stone at the animals, missing them and smashing his brother's scull.
At St. Louis, Thomas J. Wharton, Jr. took up a large oyster, said: "This was the sort of oyster Walter Brooks choked to death."
The peculiar dietetic system of the Anaheim Societas Fraternia is imitated by a family in Kern county, the head of which writes the following letter to the Bulletin: I am surprised that it should be considered "cheap living" for a man to be able to provide himself with a supply of starch for a year by twenty days' labor, when here, on Kern Island, five days' ordinary labor would furnish him with enough of an almost perfect food, in the form of ground wheat, to supply him for a year; and five or ten days more would give him a full supply of variety, in the way of vegetables and fruit, to keep him in active bodily and mental condition; and if one is willing to adopt the "grain and fruit diet," which some of us have been experimenting for some two months past, to physical and mental advantage, it need not cost even that much; for I find that three of us, a growing boy of seventeen years, my wife and self, do not together use on an average more than one and one-half pounds of wheat or other grains per day, and though supplied with Sickle, Winter Nellis and other pears, peaches, apples, Muscat grapes and other fruit — not more than eight pounds of fruit per day — thus making a total expense of 2½ cents for grain and 16 cents for fruit per day. So we have a total of 18½ cents per day, or $66 60 per year, or $22 20 for each person; and as wages here for ordinary work are $1 50 per day, if you board yourself, it would take less than fifteen days' labor to provision each one a year on a full supply of the best grain and choice fruits, giving the best health and gustatory pleasure, and as in the experiment we used them all uncooked, the only work of preparation necessary to be performed was a few minutes' time each day preparing the grain in a steel hand mill, not equal to more than five minutes for each person.
Instead of getting the very unfavorable results that you give as coming from depending upon the sago diet, we have all gained in health. I was, in two weeks, completely cured of dyspepsia, that has troubled me from boyhood until nearly fifty years of age, and my spectacles, which had become constant companions, were nearly put aside, and with all them an increase of

Wharton, Jr. took up a large oyster, said: "This was the sort of oyster Walter Brooks choked to death on!" tried to swallow it, and choked to death.
At Creedmoor, a friend snapped a cherry pit at Lieutenant W. A. Moore, and hit him in the eye. It struck the optic nerve, causing paralysis and congestion of the brain, and he had a narrow escape from death.
At Nontioke, Pa., John Lafschuski broke a bottle of whiskey in his pocket, saturating his clothes; when he subsequently lit a match they took fire, and he was fatally burned.
In Adair County, Mo., two young men agreed to be photographed with pistols drawn on each other. The artist, while arranging its position, discharged one of the pistols, shooting the opposite sitter through the lungs.
At Eastport, Me., a sailor, wanting a drink of water, finding the cask pump frozen, poured hot water into it, and while attempting to suck a drink inhaled the steam and was scalded to death almost instantaneously.
At Pittsburg, Mike Maloney entered a core oven to warm himself, and another workman placed a core on the truck, run it in, and he was roasted alive.
The Use of Disinfectants.
In the use of a disinfectant a double object must be secured. First, the removal of objectionable odors; second, the chemical change of the fetid mass from a state of decomposition and production of noxious gases, rendering it harmless. Probably the least useful disinfectants are those which have powerful odors of their own, as carbonic acid in its various forms, chloride of lime, camphor, etc. For, while these really possess disinfecting qualities they are apt to deceive by covering up what they ought to remove. Carbolate of lime used upon a putrescent mass will disinfect only where it touches, and unless it is thoroughly mixed with the whole, it will effect only the surface, while, by its wholesome odor, it appears to do far more. Chloride of lime does better, for while there remains in it any chlorine it will absorb and destroy all foul emanations, but it is soon delinquent and inert. Earth is the best disinfectant. When thrown upon a substance to be disinfected, the salts which it contains slowly percolate through it, and it is chemically changed and only work of preparation necessary to be performed was a few minutes' time each day preparing the grain in a steel hand mill, not equal to more than five minutes for each person.
Instead of getting the very unfavorable results that you give as coming from depending upon the sago diet, we have all gained in health. I was, in two weeks, completely cured of dyspepsia, that has troubled me from boyhood until nearly fifty years of age, and my spectacles, which had become constant companions, were nearly put aside, and with all them an increase of mental if not of physical ability. Now, I believe on this fertile land, any one, from one acre well cultivated in fruits and grain, with one hour's work each day, can be supplied with a most wholesome and delightful diet of the finest fruits and continue in good health; and one hour more, well applied, will furnish good comfortable clothing. Why need it longer be said man is subject to the curse of earning his bread by the sweat of his brow?
Paddy Ryan, who is in training for a fight with J. L. Sullivan, described to a reporter the methods adopted to put himself in fighting trim. "I am up in the morning by daylight," said he, "and after being sponged and dressed, I play for an hour before breakfast with a football or with a cane to make my wrists supple. Then I go to breakfast, which consists of a couple of mutton chops and plenty of dry toast and the yolk of an egg in a breakfast cup of tea with no milk. Wet or dry, I give my trainers a training in the way of fourteen or fifteen miles before dinner, getting back by 1½ o'clock to the baths, where I get another thorough rubbing down. After being rubbed dry I take a rest of half an hour, and then go down to dinner, which is always ready promptly at 1½ o'clock. The meal consists of either a prime piece of roast beef or a boiled leg of mutton and sometimes a boiled broiled chicken, and I generally drink a half pint of ale or a glass of port wine, with vegetables and pudding, with a half pint tumbler of jelly."
WASHINGTON, December 31.—South Carolina politicians now here are considerably disturbed over information from Charleston that the exodus fever has broken out among the colored plantation hands, and that already several thousand have made arrangements to go to Arkansas. So general has the movement become that it is feared that there will be an almost total loss of the crops in three or four counties next year.

A Wonderful Discovery.
For the speedy cure of Consumption and all diseases that lead to it, such as stubborn Coughs, neglected Colds, Bronchitis, Hay Fever, Asthma, pain in the side and chest, dry hacking cough, tickling in the throat, Hoarseness, Sore Throat, and all chronic or lingering diseases of the throat and lungs, Dr. King's New Discovery has no equal and has established for itself a world-wide reputation. Many leading physicians recommend and use it in their practice. The formula from which it is prepared is highly recommended by all medical journals. The clergy and the press have complimented it in the most glowing terms. Go to your druggist and get a trial bottle free of cost, or a regular size for $1. For sale by all druggists.
Preventive of Malarial Disease.
OFFICE OF EMINENT DR. H. B. WALTON OF ANNAPOLIS, MD.
"COLDEN'S LIEBIG'S LIQUID EXTRACT OF BEEF AND TONIC INVIGORATOR is a most excellent preparation. It is, par excellence, superior to cod-liver oil or anything I have ever used in wasted or impaired constitutions, and extremely beneficial as a preventive of malarial diseases." (Remember the name, Colden's—take no other.) Of druggists generally.
"I am the Last of Six."
One rainy forenoon, something less than a year ago, a pale, cadaverous youth walked into the store of C. N. CRITTENTON, New York, and in weak, husky tones, interrupted frequently by a dry, hacking cough, stated that he wanted a couple bottles of HALE'S HONEY OF HOREHOUND AND TAR. "I am the last of six," he said; "the others all died of consumption, and I am going fast. I will try this new remedy, but I have no hope." He did try it, and to some purpose. He took in all twelve bottles, and is to-day in perfect health—lungs sound, cough gone, not a sign of pulmonary disease remaining. Sold by druggists.
