Profit of Orange Culture.
An article in a recent number of the London Times gives some interesting statistics on the profits of orange culture in those parts of Syria where that fruit is as much a staple as the grape in France or the apple in Oregon. The article is founded on the latest consular report from the British Consulate at Beyrout, and the figures are therefore official and reliable. At present there are 340 orange orchards at and around Jaffa (the ancient Joppa). They average from 2000 to 2500 trees each, and their aggregate crop is 36,000,000 oranges. An orchard of 2500 bearing trees cost $8000, and brings a yearly income of $800 to $1000. The irrigation has to be supplied from wells forty to fifty feet deep, and is pumped by mule power. Unplanted land near Jaffa, suitable for the orange, sells at $400 to $600 for an area large enough to contain 2000 trees. An acre of orange land-near Sidon is worth from $1200 to $1400, and brings an income of $100 to $120 a year when the trees have passed their tenth year. The market is found in Southern Russia during the open season on
The Villainous Acacia.
It is thought by some of our orchardists that the insect pests now ravaging our orchards are due to the acacia trees upon which the scale-bug first appeared; and not only the scale-bug but a variety of other parasites, in many instances literally covering the leaves and branches, and dropping down an oily substance which emits a most villainous odor. We doubt if there is an acacia tree in this city that is not more or less affected with vermin. They should be removed from our public parks and from all private grounds at once, for the pests spread rapidly to other trees, taking in many varieties of house plants and shrubs, invading, on the grounds of the writer, the orange and birch trees. The handsomest of all our evergreens, the pepper tree, has been found thus far to be absolutely free from all manner of insect pests. For a clean, beautiful and healthful shade there is no other tree that can compare with it. Let the pepper be substituted in our parks for the acacia, and the sooner the better for the health of the other trees. —San Jose Mercury.
Brother Gardner on Music.
"I has received a letter from Boston," slowly remarked Brother Gardner of the Lime-Kiln Clnb, as he squinted from Samuel Shin to Waydown Bebee — "I has received a letter from Boston axin' me fur my observashuns on de inflooence of music on mankind. I reply dat mankind widout music would be chawin' each odder up in half a day. Music am de stone wall dat surrounds marcy, peace, charity and humanity. Only las' week I war' writin' down my observashuns fur de las' forty-seven y'ars, an' I will gib dem to de public as follows:
"De soun' of a hoss fiddle brings up old reekoleckshuns an' starts de tear of regret. If played long 'nuff, an' de wind am in de right direckshun, it will cause de listener to shell out a subscripshun of $3 to'rds a new cull'd Baptist Church. Try it once and be convinced.
"De soun' of a harp hits a man below de belt. He begins to fink of all de mean fings he ever did, an' to wish he hadn't, an' at de end of fifteen minutes he am all ready to step ober an' pay his naybur a dollar apiece fur de heus he shot in his garden las' spring."

George Atwood, in his "Practical Blowpipe Assaying," gives the following list of the principal minerals containing silver:

Chilentic, containing 85.2 per cent silver, 13.8 per cent bismuth.
Bromyrite, containing 57.4 per cent silver, with bromide 42.6 per cent.
Cerarygrite (horn of chloride), containing 76.3 per cent silver.
Embolite, containing 60.72 per cent silver, with bromide and chlorine.
Sternbergate, containing 62.2 per cent silver, with iron 36 per cent, silver with sulphur and arsenic.
Iodvrite, containing 46 per cent silver, with iodine 56 per cent.

The author of "Once a Week Talks" in the Syracuse Herald tells the following story of Ex-Secretary Belknap:
"Chancing to look one day into a tailor's shop show-window, he discovered there one of those ingenious fashion-plates representing the late President and his Cabinet in the most gorgeous attire shears, needle and goose can concoct. He studied it attentively a minute or two, and then stepped inside and inquired the address of the publisher. A few days later he was seen at his office desk with a small pile of these plates before him, folding one at a time in a newspaper wrapper and preparing it for mailing. 'I'm laying out Kirkwood,' said he. 'Do you see the style he's got up in there in that picture? Well, sir, I'm sending a copy to every prominent Granger in the State of Iowa. They all knew him when he used to sit around in his shirt-sleeves on a dry goods box at a corner store, with cow-skin boots on, an old straw hat with no ribbon but a shoe-string, a cob pipe in his mouth, and a generally 'How-de-do,' devil-may-care air about him. When they look at that picture, they'll drop all of a heap. 'If that's the sort a man it makes of Sam Kirkwood to live in Wash'n'ton,' they'll say, 'the quicker he comes back to Iowey the better.'"
De soun' of a hoss fiddle brings up old reekoleckshuns an' starts de tear of regret. If played long 'nuff, an' de wind am in de right direckshun, it will cause de listener to shell out a subscripshun of $3 to'rds a new cull'd Baptist Church. Try it once and be convinced.
De soun' of a harp hits a man below de belt. He begins to fink of all de mean fings he ever did, an' to wish he hadn't, an' at de end of fifteen minits he am all ready to step ober an' pay his naybur a dollar apiece fur de he shot in his garden las' spring.
De soun' of de fiddle grabs on to seben different h'art strings to once, an' a man am knocked so flat dat he will esteem it a privilege to len' you ten dollars.
Pianer music sometimes hits and sometimes mises.
De guitar allus brings sadness an' a resolushun to begin on de lst of Jinuary to quit runnin' out nights an' playing policy.
De melodeon used to produce a desire on de part of de listener to be buried under a yew-yew tree, but I'har dery have improved it so dat a pusson had as lief be buried under a basswood.
De organ fills de soul wid awe an' strikes de heroic chord. If you am layin' fur a man doan tackle him jist arter he has bin takin' in de notes of an organ.
De banjo—yum! If you want my dog—my house an' lot, play me de banjo an' keep time wid yer fo'. I spect de music of angelic harps am sweet an' soft an' dreamy; but if dey want to keep us cull'd folks satisfied up dar'a little mo' banjo an' a leetle less harp am de fust prescription. Let us now attack de bizness of de meetin'" —[Detroit Free Press.]

All fruit men agree that the early Moorpark apricot is the most profitable for cultivation in the San Joaquin Valley. It ripens early, when other fruits cannot be obtained, is large in size and of superior quality, making it very desirable. For canning purposes it is superior to all others, and brings a better price in the market. We would suggest that our farmers who contemplate planting apricots the coming season, recollect this variety, and at least plant a number of the trees. The time for putting out fruit trees, as well as other kinds, will soon be upon us, and from what we can learn more orchards will be planted in this one season than altogether heretofore. Our farmers should post themselves on the best varieties of fruit to grow for profit, and obtain those which have been tested here and proved successful, if possible. By this manner of proceeding a great deal of annoyance will be evaded. The Winter Nelis and Seekle pears will, it is stated, do well here.—Kern Gazette.

I have made sufficient experiments of COLDEN'S LIERIG'S LIQUID EXTRACT OF FEEP AND TOXIC INVIGORATOR to enable me to say it is by far the best of all the preparations of the kind (food and tonic) that I have ever used. A Tilt with Time.
Ladies in their attempts to baffle old Time are bound to receive some wounds in the encounter. These, however, they can conceal, as far as the complexion, is concerned by a timely and regular resort to the use of "GLENN'S SULPHUR SOAP." Without obstructing the pores, or in any way injuring the health of the skin, it removes from the surface pimples, redness and the various disfigurements caused by increasing age or exposure to the sun. See that "C. N. CHRIENTON, Proprietor," is printed on each packet, without which none is genuine. Sold by druggists and fancy goods dealers.
