Brief communications on current topics are respectfully solicited from all parts of the county. An Emperor's Joke. In the published memoirs of Karatygin, the famous Russian actor, will be found the following characteristic anecdote of the late Emperor Nicholas. His Majesty happened one day to be engagd in inspecting a state penitentiary in one of the provincial seats of government, and took it into his head to question some of the convicts respecting the nature of the offenses for which they were suffering punishment. "What are you here for?" he asked of one. "I am innocent, Imperial Majesty," replied the prisoner, falling on his knees, "a victim of false witnesses! A church was robbed—a beadle knocked on the head—the peasants caught hold of me and I knew nothing about it." Turning to another, the Czar asked, "And you?" "False witness again, Imperial Majesty. A peddler was done for close to my house. I never even dreamed of such a thing." "And you?" said Nicholas to a third. "Sheer malice, Sire. One of my neighbors conveyed a lot of forged notes into my pockets, and hid away a lithographic stone in my bedroom. I am as innocent as an unborn babe." The Emperor In London recently large quantities of imitation honey-comb, filled with glucose instead of honey, were found exposed for sale. The boxes bore the stamp of the New York Custom House, and were labeled "Sweet Clover Honey." The honey-comb had been made by machinery out of paraffin wax, and, after the cells were filled with glucose, a hot iron had been passed over the wax tops, thus closing them. The glucose had been made to resemble honey in both its taste and appearance. It is said that from a bushel of corn, costing thirty cents, a dollar's worth of glucose may be made. Mr. Justice Cave of the English High Court of Justice recently committed a lady to prison for marrying, in disobedience to an order of the court, a young gentleman who was a ward of court, the lady herself being an adult. Enterprising Druggists. Mr. A. Langenberger, the live storekeeper of the town, is always up to the times and ready to meet the demands of his many customers. They have just received a supply of that wonderful remedy that is astonishing the world by its marvelous cures, Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs, Colds, Asthma, Bronchitis, Hay Fever, Phthisic, Croup, Whooping Cough, Tickling in the Throat, Loss of Voice, Hoarseness, or any affection of the Throat and Lungs. This remedy positively cures, as thousands can testify. If you do not believe it, call at Langenberger's store, Anaheim, and get a Sample Bottle free of cost or a regular size bottle for one dollar. As you value your life, give it a trial and be convinced, as thousands already have been. Wholesale by Redington & Co., San Francisco. Oh. What a Cough? Will you heed the warning? Dyspepsia & Liver Complaint. Is it not worth the small price of 75 cents to free yourself of every symptom of these How to Hang Thermometers. There seem to be so many erroneous notions among the many amateur meteorologists of the city about the minimum temperature of the twenty-four hours, and how to obtain it corr city, says a correspondent of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, that a few lines from an "old weathercock," I trust, will not be altogether lost. In the first place, then, the temperature of the wall of any building at any hour of the night or day is not the true temperature of the circulating air, and is of no use to science. A wood wall will radiate its heat more rapidly than a brick or stone, and the amateur scientist who hangs his thermometer on a wood wall can force his mercury down below the amateur who selects a brick wall. The proper way to expose your thermometer is to surround it with a light wood frame, covered with slats, like shutter work, and roofed over. This will protect it from the direct rays of the sun and reflected heat. Run a light wood bar across the center of your shelter, to which you can attach the thermometer, which should be, when properly exposed, on the north side of the building, and at least one foot from all surrounding objects. If these directions are followed, erroneous reports of extreme cold weather will not find their way into print so often. It is not a very funny thing for the press to report 25 deg. below zero, when 15 deg. represented the true temperature of the circulating air. It gives persons abroad wrong impressions of your climate. What Saved His Life. The way to stop the flow of blood from a bad wound has been so often pointed out that it is best illustrated by an actual example. Opinion of Eminent Dr. R S. Steuart, PRESIDENT MARYLAND HOSPITAL, BALTIMORE MD. I have used COLDEN'S LIQUID EXTRACT OF BEEF AND TONIC INVIGORATOR for more than a year, and recommend it as one of the most efficient preparations I have ever met with. It combines the virtues of food and tonic in a remarkable way, and I am satisfied has saved life when no other medicine could do it. (Remember the name, COLDEN's - take no other.) Of druggists generally. The Culture of Beauty. Although Nature alone can produce perfect beauty, Art may in a great measure supply Nature's deficiencies. We see this instanced in the clearness and luster imparted to even a sallow skin by "GLENN'S SULPHUR SOAP." The lady of forty, who uses this beautifier, drops at least ten years of her age. Unlike the dangerous cosmetics which obstruct the pores, it is entirely harmless. See that "C. N. CRITTENTON, Proprietor," is printed on each packet, without which none is genuine. Sold by druggists and fancy goods dealers. HILL'S HAIR AND WHISKER DYE, Black What Saved His Life. The way to stop the flow of blood from a bad wound has been so often pointed out that it is best illustrated by an actual example. When people injured and bleeding are able to help themselves by so simple a process, they should certainly love their lives well enough to do so. That Gen. Sickles is alive to-day is due only to his great presence of mind. When he fell on the field of Gettysburg, he fainted. Recovering consciousness, but half-dazed, he found he was completely away from the hope of immediate help, and that blood was gushing from his leg in jets, showing that an artery was severed. Painfully raising himself until he found his handkerchief, he tied it around the wound in such a way as to stop the flow, and, in order to secure additional tightness, ran his sword-handle under the handkerchief, and with all his power twisted it around and held it so until the surgeon came on the battlefield. Like most persons, he had read directions of what was necessary to be done in such emergencies, but, unlike many persons, he was cool and collected enough to put his reading into practice when the emergency came. A woman hunted two hours for a needle she dropped on the floor, and couldn’t find it, and then her husband came in, and had hardly taken his boots off before he could tell where it was. Queer how men can do things that women. Kokoma, Ind., Sept. 22.—Dr. Henry C. Cole, Mayor of this city, was shot dead by the Sheriff’s posse while, it is alleged, stealing sacks of flour in the night time from the Spring Mills. His friends claim that he was decoyed into the mill by conspirators, as the posse was composed of bitter enemies. The owner of a large cranberry farm at Berlin, Wis., employs a hundred girls, and he promises to marry the one who picks the most berries this season, providing she wants him. The Culture of Beauty.
