Fifty years ago tomatoes were called love apples and were considered poisonous. It is calculated that sixty tons of steel are annually consumed in the manufacture of steel pens. One of the wonder of the Cathedral of Cologne is the chapel of the three Magi, which contains the skulls of the "three wise men of the East," set in precious stones. There is no tide perceptible in the Mississippi river after you have passed up about thirty miles from its mouth, and the tide only rises from one and a-half to two feet at Balize. The number of tributaries (the Ohio, Missouri, and so on) which help to flood the Mississippi and swell its volume of water, gives it that downward current which overcomes every resisting influence, even the tidal. Catout, it is stated, was used in the earlier watches in place of chains, the latter, it would seem, being first attached to such mechanisms in the golden egg or acorn-shaped watches of Hans Johns, of Konigsberg. Some of this maker's timekeepers had small wheel-lock pistols to serve as an alarm, an addition that would go far to upset the equable temperament and delicate susceptibilities of a modern chronometer. Col. Ironsides, who lived in India early in this century, relates that he met in his travels an old white-haired man, who with one leap sprung over the back of an enormous elephant flanked by six camels of the largest breed. A curious French work, published in Paris in 1745, entitled "The Tracts Toward the History of Wonders Performed at Fairs," mentioned an Englishman who, at the fair of St. Germain in 1724, leaped over forty people without touching one of them. In 1855 Sir Henry Rawlinson carried with him to England many relics of ancient Babylon, all of which are now in the British Museum. The town of Zitlab, with 7,000 inhabitants, is now considered the modern representative of ancient Babylon. As for Thebes, the ruins comprise nine townships. Recent excavations have brought to light these constructions of the eleventh dynasty. Names of Shareholders. F L Floyd J B Pierce C F Bassett S Litfield T P Hinde We will do what is right, but we cannot work. The Indian cannot hunt the potato-bug when the deer and antelope are ripe. He cannot dig post-holes in the sun when the chase calls upon him to go forth into the forest. Here, where we have roamed through the tall grass and hunted the buffalo, the pale face asks us to dig irrigation ditches and plow the earth with a rebellious mule. Here, where our war cry has been answered back by the giant hills, we are told to whack bulls and join the church. They come to us and tell us to go to school and wear pants. They ask us to learn the language and go to Congress. They send men to us who want us to learn to spell and wear suspenders. We cannot do this. We are used to the ways of our people. Our customs are as old as the universe. We scratch our backs against the mountain pines as my people did a thousand years ago. We cannot change. We can leave our land, but we cannot change our socks every spring and do as the white man does. We can go away from our homes and live in a strange land, but we cannot wear open-backed shirts and lead in prayer. Warriors, we will go to the land our white father has given us. We will take our squaws and our yellow dogs, our wigwams and our fleas. We will go to our new home beyond the river now, and when the autumn comes we will take a bridal tour back to this country. We will construct a holocaust, whatever that is, and spatter the intellectual faculties of the ranchos all over the country. This is all. I am done. I have made my remarks. I have twittered my twit."—Laramie City Boomerang. Sneezing. "God bless you!" is the common expression of Europeans when you sneeze in their presence; sneezing having been considered in ancient times the result of a demoniac possession, to avert the evil influence they invoke a blessing. But the true philosophy of a sneeze is set forth in an article in the Popular Science Monthly for April under the heading "What is a Cold?" The whole of it is worth reading, but we have only room to transcribe what relates to sneezing; "Sneezing in catarrh is a method nature adopts to stimulate the prostrate nervous center, and thus enable it to reassert its proper control over the blood supply to the part; indeed, it will be found that the effects of being exposed to a draft of cold air are often completely destroyed by a succession of sneezes. Of course, nature does not always immediately succeed in these efforts; but, when she does not, the shock from which the nervous center suffers gradually passes away, and the blood-vessels again come under the control of the hittle nerves which regulate their caliber, and so the catarrh disappears in a few hours, or at most in a few days. It sometimes happens that the shock from the cold air acting upon the nervous center is of such severity that the consequent inflammation is intense In 1855 Sir Henry Rawlinson carried with him to England many relics of ancient Babylon, all of which are now in the British Museum. The town of Zitlah, with 7,000 inhabitants, is now considered the modern representative of ancient Babylon. As for Thebes, the ruins comprise nine townships. Recent excavations have brought to light these constructions of the eleventh dynasty. The Nile flows through the midst of the ancient city. It is now inhabited by a few Arab families. Tyre existed, amid all its destructive experiences, until A.D. 1516, when the conquest of Selim, together with the newly discovered route to Asia by the Cape of Good Hope, put an end to its wealth and commerce. Among its ruins from 3,000 to 4,000 inhabitants now dwell and earn a livelihood by exporting tobacco, cotton, wool and wood. Nineveh was destroyed by fire about 605 B.C., and the slabs and statues found there show the effect of intense heat. The excavations exhibit many bas-reliefs representing war and hunting. The discoveries of Layard and others in the neighborhood of Mosul, the supposed site of Ninevah, since 1839, have in a manner disinterred and re-peopleled a city which, for centuries, had seemed to be blotted from the map of the earth. Pete's Icicles. Pete was a Kansas immigrant on the South, in which climate he has never seen weather sufficiently cold to form an icicle. The farmer he hired out to gave Pete instructions one day to go to the wood-shed and tell Jake, a Northern "nig," to remove the icicles from the barn. The word icicles staggered betta. However, he kept muttering the sentence, "De eye sycles in de barn," until when he reached the woodshed, the sentence was so inextricably mixed that he stood for a few moments looking at Jake, expecting he might anticipate the message and relieve the old man of his difficulty. Finding no relief in Jake's stare of inquiry he launched out with, "Look a hyar, you Jake, de mass'r tole me to tale you, dat you wor to—to—to remove de barnacles in de ice; you hyar?" Jake dropped his ax, and, scratching his woolly pate, queried, "De whaticles in de whar?" "Didn't I tole yer as plain as your underlip, de bicycles from the yarn?" "You said nuffin o' de kine; you said de 'obstacles in de ice house." "I tell you, nigger, wet I tole you was de 'housicals from de barnacles.'" "Look a hyar, you Southern galoot, you is a whimsical and nonsensical fool, an' you is gittin' too quizzical to suit dis chile. I know wot you're a drivin' at; de mass'r tole you to tole me to chop de wood darned quick, an' dat's wot I'm a doin' an' don't you forget it." "Well, Jake, I knew it wor somefin like dat, but bress my soul if I could jist git de exac' vocabulary." If you happen to print a kiss, you need not publish it. The East Indian Clerk and Bad English. W M McPhail Anaheim August 16th 185 An Indignant Tree. From the Virginia Enterprise. A gentleman of this place has a species of acacia tree grown from a seed brought from Australia. The tree is now a sapling some eight feet in height. It is leguminous and shows the characteristics of the sensitive plant. Regularly every evening, about the time the chickens go to roost, the leaves fold together, and the ends of the tender twigs coil themselves up like the tail of a pig. After one of the twigs has been stroked or handled, the leaves move uneasily and are in a sort of mild commotion for a minute or more. Recently the tree was transplanted into a larger pot. Hardly had it been placed in its new quarters before the leaves began to stand up in all directions, like the hair on the tail of an angry cat, and soon the whole plant was in a quiver. This could have been endured, but at the same time it gave out an odor most pungent and sickening, just such a smell as is given out by rattle snakes and many other kinds of snakes in summer when teased. This odor so filled the house and was so sickening that it was found necessary to open the doors and windows. It was fully an hour before the plant calmed down and folded its leaves in peace. It would probably not have given up the fight even then had it not been that its time for going to sleep had arrived. People should avoid, as far as possible, being run over by railroad cars. An empty platform car weighs 18,000 pounds; an empty box car, 20,000 pounds; a passenger car, 36,000 pounds, and sometimes more; and an average locomotive, 80,000 pounds. A single pair of car wheels weighs 500 pounds. The East Indian Clerk and Bad English. One of the members of the local bar having on behalf of a client obtained a decree against a certain individual, set about attaching his property, as that appeared to be the only way of getting the claim satisfied. Among the defendant's belongings were three crab winches, and the lawyer, in drafting the application for an attachment, entered "three winches." His clerk, in filling out the draft, not knowing what a winch was, and being under the impression that his master had made a mistake, innocently entered "three winches." This got into the hands of one of the Small Cause Court clerks, who, thinking the word "wenchies" too slangy, altered it to "three women," when it was passed on to another clerk, who, priding himself on his just appreciation of the general fitness of things, altered the "women" to "wives." The feelings of that advocate, when the Judge sweetly asked him why he wished to attach the defendant's three "wives," expressing at the same time his doubt to issue such an attachment, may be better imagined than described. The advocate has bought a rhinoceros-hide whip, and is trying to discover which clerk played such a trick upon him.—Moulmein Advertiser. Advice to the Rising Generation. Boys, do you wish to make your mark in the world? Do you wish to be men? Then observe the following rules: Hold integrity sacred. Observe good manners. Endure trials patiently. Be prompt in all things. Make few acquaintances. Yield not to discouragements. Dare to do right; fear to do wrong. Watch carefully over your passions. Fight life's battle bravely, manfully. Consider well, then decide positively. Sacrifice money rather than principle. Use all your leisure time for improvement. Attend carefully to the details of your business. Not born to blush unseen—The mansles. WASHINGTON Meat Market! CENTRE STREET, ANAHEIM, C. E. LEONARD, Proprietor. THE PATRONAGE OF THE PEOPLE OF ANAHEIM and vicinity is respectfully solicited.
